    Objective: This paper intended to review and analyse relevant published articles which have studied or applied multimedia as the educational medium for patients or their caregivers. The benefits were also recorded.

    Method: The search was performed across the databases EBSCO Host, Springer Link, Science Direct and PubMed for relevant studies. Only full-text articles using English as a language of publication were included. Eligible articles included any usage of multimedia intervention as health information delivery for patients or caregivers. No restriction for publication date was set to permit a wider capture.

    Result: Twenty articles met the inclusion criteria involving a total of 1,797 respondents. The studies have been conducted in various countries mostly in North American region followed by Europe. The focused disease for each study varied from asthma to cognitive impairment but most were on cancer. Problems in caregiving and depression were also reported. The overall data suggested that the multimedia-based education had generated modest improvement in self-efficacy, patient satisfaction, coping skills, and perceptions of social support. Cost benefits were also recorded. Additionally, patients’ behavioural changes were well maintained in parallel with the intervention programme.

    Conclusion: The evolution of multimedia as an educational medium is growing and its incorporation has benefited health education management especially in improving patients’ and their family’s psychosocial outcomes. However, due to still limited scientific evidence to support its value, further multimedia-based interventions should be developed out of the need to share information and knowledge among patients as well as caregivers.

    ntroduction: In the marking of objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), checklist scoring and global rating are two commonly used scoring systems. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between checklist scores and global ratings for four OSCE stations of different station type. Method: Data for this study was obtained from the Final Year OSCE (n=185). Each station’s score sheet consisted of a detailed checklist of items examined. A global rating scale was also included for the examiner to indicate the global assessment for the station. Spearman’s rho correlation coefficients between checklist scores and global ratings were computed for four stations of different station type. For each station, correlations between checklist scores and global ratings were also checked across the three parallel circuits running concurrently and throughout the four rounds.     Situated learning characterises the learning that takes place in the clinical environment. Learning in the workplace is characterised by transferring classroom knowledge into performing tasks and this may take various forms. In the medical education field, the cognitive apprenticeship instructional model developed by Collins (2016) supported this learning in the workplace setting due to its common characteristics of apprenticeship. This paper analysed two concrete learning situations in a Malaysian undergraduate and an Omani postgraduate learning environment. Both learning situations occurred in the primary healthcare outpatient setting. The cognitive apprenticeship model was used to identify characteristics of the individual learning environments and discusses factors that stimulate learning. Attention was paid to the role of reflection in stimulating learning in the described settings. The paper provided the context in both institutes, described the learning situation and provided an analysis based on the theoretical framework. Based on the analysis of the situations, solutions to problems in the two settings were suggested.

    Teaching stress management skills for medical students has been echoed as an important educational component in medical education. Discussions about approaches to teaching stress management in medical education context are largely unexplored despite of a large number of articles have emphasized on its importance. This paper describes four elements in a framework as an approach to teaching stress management skills in medical education. As one moves through the framework, it provides a greater degree of insight on stress management ability as is acquired through one's awareness, experience and conscious effort that allow stressful situations to be handled effectively and efficiently. It may provide a useful educational framework for medical teachers to teach and assess stress management skills of medical students. It also may be used as an aid in planning, implementing and evaluating stress management programs in medical schools. The authors discuss about the implications of this framework for future research in medical education.

    Introduction: USMaP-i is an English, 66-item self-administered inventory, consisting of personality
    (60 items, 5 factors) and faking (one factor) components, which was mainly developed to measure
    personality traits among Malaysian students based on local cultures and values. The personality
    component was based on the Big Five dimensions as suggested by numerous personality researchers.
    Previous exploratory studies showed promising validity, reliability and stability of USMaP-i.
    Objective: To provide further validity evidence of USMaP-i for use among medical degree program
    applicants by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Methods: Data were collected as a part of screening
    of medical degree program applicants for year 2010–2013 intakes in Universiti Sains Malaysia
    (USM), of which 657 cases were suitable for analyses following a data screening measures. CFA was
    performed by bootstrap maximum likelihood estimation due to non-normality of items at multivariate
    level. Results: Although the revised five-factor model of personality showed good model fit (X2(df) =
    144.36(55), P-value < 0.001; CFI = .944, TLI = .921; RMSEA = .050; SRMR = .032, Bollen-Stine
    bootstrap P-value = 0.004), the reliability of the factors is very poor (composite reliabilities (CR) =
    .483 to .650). In contrast, the unidimensional faking component exhibited good model fit (X2(df)
    = 14.15(5), P-value = 0.015; CFI = .984, TLI = .968; RMSEA = .053; SRMR = .011, BollenStine
    bootstrap P-value = 0.068) and factor reliability (CR = 0.731). Conclusion: The personality
    component should be revised and revalidated due to poor reliability, despite showing good model fit.
    In contrast, the faking component showed good model fit and reliability. Further validation studies are
    recommended before its use among medical degree program applicants.

    Objective: To determine the construct validity, convergent validity, construct reliability and internal consistency of the Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) among first-year medical students in Malaysia. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was done on 375 medical students of four medical schools in Malaysia. The confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis were applied to measure construct validity, construct reliability and internal consistency of the MSSQ. These analyses were done using Predictive Analytics SoftWare (PASW) version 18 and Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS) version 19. The Composite Reliability and Average Variance Extracted of the final constructs were calculated manually to determine construct reliability and convergent validity. Results: A total of 359 (95.7%) medical students responded to this study. The confirmatory factor analysis showed the six factor model with 20 items had a good fit with the latent constructs (X2 (df) = 258.02 (155), p < 0.001, RMR = 0.055, GFI = 0.933, AGFI = 0.910, NFI = 0.931, RFI = 0.916, IFI = 0.971, TLI = 0.965, CFI = 0.971, RMSEA = 0.043). The Cronbach’s alpha value of the MSSQ was 0.92. The Cronbach’s alpha values of the six constructs were more than 0.7. Composite Reliability and Average Variance Extracted values of the six constructs were more than 0.6 and 0.5 respectively indicating good construct reliability and adequate convergent validity. Conclusion: This study suggested that the six factor model with 20 items of the MSSQ had a good fit and shown good psychometric values. It is a valid and reliability measurement to identify stressors among medical students across institutions in Malaysia.

    Objective: The study aimed to obtain the perspective and teaching practice of novice lecturers serving at the training institutions, Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH).

    Method: A qualitative research was conducted on 4 novice lecturers at the Medical Assistant College, Seremban. Data were obtained from interview and observation on their teaching in the lecture rooms. The data analysis was performed by using NVivo 9 software.

    Result: In the aspect of the teaching perspective, the finding showed that there were two main themes; teaching concept and the teaching method. As far as the teaching concept is concerned, respondents perceived that lecturers were the source of knowledge and those who transfered the knowledge to the students. Meanwhile, the second perspective related to the teaching approach in which lecturers need to use their experiences, they need to be knowledgeable and creative in their teaching. The integration of the themes has formed the main perspective, which was the lecturer-centered teaching. In turn, in the teaching practice, it was consistent with their perspective whereby the approach of teaching is lecturer-centered.

    Conclusion: This study showed that new lecturers would employ the lecturer-centered approach. Apart from that, they were also lacking of the skills in terms of class control and value inculcation. The deficiency in both these aspects needs to be overcome as it can affect the effectiveness of the teaching, also the quality of the graduates produced.

    Introduction: Detecting sources of stress of medical students is important for planning wellness
    program to improve their psychological wellbeing. One of instruments to detect the sources of stress
    is the Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ). A systematic review was performed to find
    out evidence to support its validity in term of content, response process, internal structure, relation
    to other variables, and consequences. Method: The author planned, conducted and reported this
    study according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses)
    standard of quality for reporting meta-analyses. Systematic search was performed on EBSCOhost,
    Scopus, Proquest, PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. Result: The author
    yielded 613 relevant articles based on search terms, 44 articles had used MSSQ, and after critical
    appraisal, only 18 articles provided evidence to support validity MSSQ and thus were included in
    the systematic review. Conclusion: This systematic review supports the validity of MSSQ in relation
    to content, response process, internal structure, relations to other variables, and consequences of
    its scores. MSSQ is a valid tool to detect sources of stress in medical students and its results can be
    utilised as a guide to plan wellness program or intervention to improve medical students’ wellbeing.

    Introduction: Crime is an immoral act capable of tearing the well-being of society and the nation. Various factors have been accredited as potential factors for crime engagement for example natural inclination, nurture or a combination of these factors. Within the domain of natural inclination, lack of self-control is often viewed as the primary cause of crime and delinquency. However, there are no valid and reliable Malay language psychometric instruments to measure the level of self-control among Malaysians.
    Objective: The aim of this study was to validate the Self Control Scale (SCS) for use among Malay speaking populations. Henceforth the Malay language version is identified as SCS-M.
    Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 150 inmates incarcerated within two prisons in Peninsular Malaysia in June 2012. Forward and Backward translations of the original SCS were carried out followed by content and face validation processes. Exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's Alpha reliability analysis were performed.
    Result: Both content and face validation processes showed promising and good outcomes. Preliminary analysis for factor analysis supported factorability of the items. The factor loadings of SCS-M items did not correspond to the original six SCS dimensions. Since SCS is often administered as a unidimensional scale, a forced one factor analysis was performed and items with factor loadings exceeding 0.3 were retained. The result of internal consistency reliability of SCS-M demonstrated a good Cronbach's alpha value of 0.80.
    Conclusion: The findings supported that SCS-M is a valid and reliable unidimensional scale to measure the level of self-control among Malay speaking populations. It is anticipated that the emergence of SCS-M is vital for self-control assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation purposes.

    Planning a validation study of a questionnaire or measurement tool requires consideration for testing
    the validity and reliability aspects of the measurement tool. When it comes to the reliability aspect,
    a number of commonly used statistical coefficients such as Cronbach’s alpha, intraclass correlation,
    kappa and Pearson’s correlation coefficients would be considered to provide empirical evidence of the
    reliability of the tool during the validation process. To ensure that the reliability is accurately assessed,
    a researcher must consider the sample size requirement for the statistical analyses. In this article, I will
    introduce a newly developed web-based sample size calculator, which includes the ability to calculate
    the sample sizes of these four important coefficients. I will also show how to use the calculator for each
    of the coefficients.

    This paper describes a systematic and practical guide on manuscript writing. A step-by-step approach
    as easy as learning ABC to facilitate authors to plan their manuscript writing. Research has shown that
    experienced writers plan extensively, in which a writing plan is a road map, without it we will probably
    lose our way in circles. Generally, authors start writing a manuscript by introduction, methods, results,
    discussion and conclusion. However, this paper proposes a different approach to start writing a
    manuscript based on the ABC of manuscript writing worksheet.

    There are five sources of validity evidence that are content, response process, internal structure, relation to other variables, and consequences. Content validity is the extent of a measurement tool represents the measured construct and it is considered as an essential evidence to support the validity of a measurement tool such as a questionnaire for research. Since content validity is vital to ensure the overall validity, therefore content validation should be performed systematically based on the evidence and best practice. This paper describes a systematic approach to quantify content validity in the form of content validity index based on the evidence and best practice.

    Validity evidence can be supported by five sources that are content, response process, internal structure, relation to other variables, and consequences. Response process validity measures the thought processes of users of the tested inventory as they respond to the assessment tool. These are commonly evaluated in the form of clarity of instructions and language used in the assessment tool, as well as the comprehension of instruction after training or an observation session. Response process validity contributes to the overall validity of an assessment tool; therefore, it should be quantified systematically based on the evidence and best practice. This paper describes a systematic approach to quantify response process validity in the form of face validity index based on the evidence.

    Introduction: Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) is a novel method of teaching-learning used in various disciplines of science and humanities. It is a technique that scaffolds the students learning process by reducing the cognitive load which is the load related to the executive control of working memory. Just in time teaching underpins the concept that expertise in learning originates from the knowledge already stored in long term memory and with subsequent interaction between the learner and teacher motivates enhanced active learning and optimizes the intellectual performance.
    Objective: The objective of the study is to assess the acceptability of JiTT over traditional lecture teaching among the medical students.
    Method: In a cross sectional pilot study, three hundred thirty five students participated in a questionnaire based study that grades the various aspects of the traditional lecture series. After the implementation of JiTT method for a period of four months, three hundred two students completed the questionnaire, grading the same variables for JiTT. The analysis was done by using SPSS version 11 applying Paired t test and McNemar's Test.
    Result: The results of our study highlighted that JiTT technique was perceived superior to traditional teaching with statistically significant outcomes in the clarity of the topic (p=0.003,) duration of the session (p=0.002), knowledge gained and orientation for exams (p=0.044). The students perceived JiTT method as less monotonous (p=0.005) increasing their alertness during these sessions (p=0.002).
    Conclusion: We therefore propose that Just-in-Time Teaching method is a more interactive and acceptable teaching-learning tool shifting the nature of teaching to a more student-centric approach as perceived by the medical students. This is the first pioneer study on JiTT to be performed on undergraduate medical students so far.

    Several studies reveal high rates of alcohol use among college students affecting their health and performances. This cross-sectional survey was done to study medical students' drinking pattern, its predictors and to develop any possible link between their academic performance and alcohol consumption. Data was collected using newly designed, validated questionnaire from students (n= 348) who consumed and not consumed alcohol. The response rate was 60% (209/348). 94% of drinkers started consuming alcohol before entering into the medical school. Most of them (85%) drank with parents' awareness. Among drinkers, 63% were of Chinese race and 35% of Indian race. None of the Malay respondents reported of drinking. 63% of drinkers and 23% of non-drinkers reported that most of their friends consumed alcohol. Drinking was not associated with smoking or drug abuse. There were no statistically significant differences in exam scores between drinkers and nondrinkers. Non-drinkers considered religious and moral obligations for not consuming alcohol. In conclusion, at our Institute, students did not allow their alcohol use to interfere with their academic performance. The drinking habit developed during school time is more likely to continue during college years. Those who have non-drinking friends are more likely not to consume alcohol themselves. Moral and religious obligations have positive impact on alcohol intake.

    Background: The weekly held clinical pathologic case conference popularly known as CPC provides an effective and regular educational media of collaborative learning for inter-disciplinary exchange of knowledge among the faculty members of an institution. CPC has been routinely practiced for the last two decades in School of medical Sciences (SMS) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). An hour session primarily involves a case presentation hiding the diagnosis followed by discussion on differential diagnosis and floor interaction on interesting clinical cases. It also gives an opportunity to new teaching staff in the institution to experience an in-house practice of presenting the clinical cases; witch can readily be reproduced as a case report for publication. An effort to follow the original format of CPC is comprehended as an essential outcome of this study to keep up the sanctity of CPC as a case method of learning medicine in future. Methodology: A questionnaire-based survey was recently conducted to evaluate the weekly held CPC in SMS. It was a cross sectional survey in which a questionnaire comprising of 23 items was administered to a targeted population of faculty members of School of Medical Sciences. The items in questionnaire were grouped into 5 clusters. All respondents were adequately briefed through a letter addressing the objectives and importance of survey and its appraisal aiming to revamp the CPC guided by the out-come of study. Questionnaires were administered to 240 academic staff, covering > 80% of the target population of 294 faculty members. 159 (66.2%) members of sample population completed the questionnaires. Total non-responses were 81 (33.7%) and item non-responses were 320 (8.7%) Result: All the items in questionnaire were found significant (p 0.016) except those two items related to, observing a difference in preparing for a case presentation verses a formal CPC presentation and its promotion (p 0.556 and 0.197 respectively). It was also established that the major respondents were unaware of the original format of CPC (p 0.003) in which a presenter select and prepares a case, which is discussed with participating faculty members for its differential diagnoses. 51.6% faculty members did not follow the formal CPC format (p 0.016) in their presentations. A lack of awareness about the format of CPC was shown by (61.0%) faculty members (p 0.003). Conclusion : It was concluded that emphasis to discuss the differential diagnosis by a competent discussant was lacking, as presenters did not follow the formal CPC format. It was critically observed that a number of presentations made in this weekly program deviate from the original format adapted by SMS in USM. However, the out-come appraisal of this survey was the pledge shown by the majority faculty members to adapt the guidelines as a reverence to the formal CPC format.

    Introduction: Metacognition is the awareness of knowledge how one learns in addition to what
    one learns and to understand how a task will be performed. Metacognitive skill as self-assessment
    is recognised as an important contributor to the development of critical capacity, reflective attitude
    and autonomous life-long learning. Accurate, self-assessment of knowledge and skills is essential for
    students to maintain and improve through self-directed learning. Objective: The objective of this
    study was to explore, how well students’ evaluate their own level of understanding for lectures to
    reflect their metacognitive skill that can be used in educational strategy to promote students’ personal
    and professional growth. Methods: To assess the metacognition of the students, a questionnaire based
    on three items was designed. All 60 (17 male and 43 female) preclinical, first-year medical students
    were included in this study. The metacognition as planning, monitoring and evaluating the lecture was
    judged through students’ response on 33 lectures in terms of understanding of knowledge, clearing
    of misconceptions and presenting of a well prepared material respectively in the field of haematology
    and parasitology. Metacognition as reflected in the lecture understanding level (LUL) score, lectures
    preparation level (LPL) score and students question level (SQL) score was estimated for its correlation
    with student’ achievement score in pre-clinical phase of MBBS program. Results: The data was
    analysed for correlation between metacognition and overall students’ achievement scores and a
    statistically significant correlation between LUL and multiple true false (MTF) of 268 (p = .039),
    LPL and MTF of .282 (p = .029) as well as between SQL and MTF of .360 (p = .005) was compared
    to poor correlation between LUL, LPL and SQL and the other three assessment tools (short essay
    questions [SEQ], problem-based questions [PBQ] and objectively structured practical examination
    [OSPE]) was found. Conclusion: The significant correlation of students’ metacognition and their
    achievement score in classroom setting with MTF and poor correlation with SEQ, PBQ and OSPE is
    attributed to multiple factors discussed in this study, imperative to students’ personal and professional
    growth.

    Objective: To determine association between academic performance and absenteeism in classroom among first year medical students.

    Methods: A one-year prospective study was conducted on 196 first year medical students. Academic performance was measured by examination scores at four examinations. Absenteeism score was measured by the cumulative number of absence in an academic session of each student recorded by academic office at the end of the first year of medical training. The academic performance was categorized into pass and fail for analysis purpose. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 20.

    Results: The independent-t analysis showed that, in all examinations, students who passed the examinations had significantly lower absenteeism scores than those who failed (p < 0.001).

    Conclusion: This study found significant associations between academic performances and absenteeism scores among first year medical students. Medical schools should pay more attention on this matter since it may result in poor academic performances.

    Introduction: Attitudes towards animal welfare are important in influencing how animals are treated. Studies of attitudes towards animal welfare in veterinary students are scarce. It is hope that the findings will enhace a diverse research in the future in order to explore variety of factors in relation to animal welfare since such study is currently limited.

    Objective: The study is to determine the associations of gender,year of study and empathy level of undergraduate DVM students in UPM into their attitude towards animal welfare.

    Method: Questionnaires were given to 440 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine undergraduate students in UPM to study the associations between gender,year of study and empathy level with attitudes towards animal welfare. Data were collected from respondents through two sets of self guided questionnaires. Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) which assessed empathy level where only two sub-scales from the IRI were used. Empathic Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT). Animal Attitude Scales (AAS) were used to assess attitudes towards animal welfare. Data collected were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.

    Result: 367 (83.4%) out of 440 students participated in this study. Antu-animal welfare attitude (74.9%) was the highest compared to the pro-animal welfare attitude (25.1%). Analysis showed a significant difference (p0.005) between gender and attitudes towards animal welfare (p=0.057) as well as between empathy level and attitudes towards animal welfarefor empathic concern sub-scale (p=0.194) and perspective taking sub-scale (p=0.320).

    Conclusion: Majority of sudents were categorized as anti-animal welfareand the attitudes were significantly different among years of study. Female and malestudents have nomsignificant differences in their attitudes towards animal welfare. Students with ggod and poor empathy level also have no significant difference in their attitudes towards animal welfare.

    Autonomy is widely accepted to be the third pillar of medical ethics. However, if it comes to refusal of life saving treatments, some extra considerations are necessary, especially if decisions are made by surrogate decision makers. Four cases of problematic decision making are presented here, followed by a discussion about the cultural and religious misconceptions about the rights of surrogate decision makers.
