This work explores the thermoluminescence (TL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties of Ag/Y co-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanophosphor. The proposed dosimeter was prepared by the coprecipitation method and sintered at temperatures from 400°C to 1000°C in an air atmosphere. Raman spectroscopy was studied to investigate the structural features of this composition. The new proposed dosimeter revealed two peaks at 150°C and 175°C with a small shoulder at high temperature (225°C). The PL spectrum showed strong green emissions between 500 to 550 nm. The Raman spectrum showed many bands related to the interaction between ZnO, silver (Ag), and yttrium oxide (Y2 O3 ). The rising sintering temperature enhanced the TL glow curve intensity. The Ag/Y co-doped ZnO nanophosphor showed an excellent linearity index within a dose from 1 to 4 Gy. The minimum detectable dose (MDD) of the Ag/Y co-doped ZnO nanopowder (pellets) equaled 0.518 mGy. The main TL properties were achieved in this work as follows: thermal fading (37% after 45 days at 1 and 4 Gy), optical fading (53% after 1 h and 68% after 6 h by exposure to sunlight), effective atomic number (27.6), and energy response (flat behavior from 0.1 to 1.3 MeV). Finally, the proposed material shows promising results nominated to be used for radiation measurements.

The scarcity of water leads to research nowadays to focus on techniques for treating wastewater. Photocatalysis emerged as a technique of interest due to its nature of friendliness. It utilizes light and catalyst to degrade the pollutants. One of the popular catalysts to be used is zinc oxide (ZnO), but its usage is limited due to the high recombination rate of electron-hole pair. Herein, in this study, ZnO is modified with graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), and the GCN loading amount was varied to study the impact on photocatalytic degradation of mixed dye solution. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that reports on the degradation of mixed dye solution using modified ZnO with GCN. Structural analysis showed that GCN is present in the composites which proves the success of the modification. Photocatalytic activity revealed that the composite with 5 wt% loading of GCN showed the best activity at a catalyst dosage of 1 g/L with degradation rates of 0.0285, 0.0365, 0.0869, and 0.1758 min-1 for methyl red, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and methylene blue dyes, respectively. This observation is expected due to the formation of heterojunction between ZnO and GCN which creates a synergistic effect and thus led to an improvement in the photocatalytic activity. Based on these results, ZnO modified with GCN has a good potential to be used in the treatment of textile wastewater which consists of various dye mixtures.

Xenobiotic Organic Compounds (XOCs) have been widely considered to be pollutant compounds due to their harmful impacts on aquatic life. However, there have been few rigorous studies of cutting-edge technology used to eradicate XOCs and their presence in bathroom greywater. The present review provides a comprehensive examination of current methodologies used for removing XOCs by photocatalysis of green nanoparticles. It was appeared that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have high efficiency (99%) in photocatalysis process. Green synthesis provides proven processes that do not require dangerous chemicals or expensive equipment, making photocatalysis a potential solution for the status quo. XOCs residue was decomposed, and pollutants were eliminated with varied degrees of efficiency using green synthesis ZnO nanoparticles. It is hypothesized that the utilization of photocatalysis can create a greywater treatment system capable of degrading the toxic XOCs in greywater while increasing the pace of production. Hence, this review will be beneficial in improving greywater quality and photocatalysis using green nanoparticles can be an immediate platform in solving the issue regarding the existence of XOCs in greywater in Malaysia. Researchers in the future may benefit from focusing on optimizing photocatalytic degradation using green-synthesis ZnO. It might also help with the creativity and productivity of the next generation of authoritative concerns, notably water conservation.

This study aims to synthesize and characterize lignin-decorated zinc oxide nanoparticles before incorporating them into resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to improve their anticariogenic potential and mechanical properties (shear bond strength and microhardness). Probe sonication was used to synthesize lignin-decorated zinc oxide nanoparticles which were then characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Following characterization, these were incorporated in RMGIC (Gold label, Fuji II LC). Three major groups, experimental group A (EGA), experimental group B (EGB), and control group (CG), were outlined. EGA and EGB were divided into numbered subgroups based on the ascending concentrations of nanoparticles (5, 10, and 15%) of lignin-coated zinc oxide and zinc-oxide, respectively. CG served as a control and comprised cured RMGIC samples without any incorporation. Anticariogenic analysis was conducted on experimental RMGIC samples via disk-diffusion (n = 3) and direct contact test (n = 3) against Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175). Optical density values for days 1, 3, and 5 were recorded via a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. A shear bond strength test was performed using 35 premolars. The adhesive remnant index was used to estimate the site of bond failure. For the Vickers microhardness test (n = 3), 100 g of load at 10 s dwell time was set. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was performed over 28 days to determine the release of zinc from the samples. All tests were analyzed statistically. The anticariogenic potential of EGA and EGB was significantly greater (p ≤ 0.05) than that of the control. The shear bond strength test reported the highest value for EGA15 with all groups exhibiting failure at the bracket/RMGIC interface. The microhardness of EGA15 yielded the highest value (p ≤ 0.05). Release kinetics displayed a steady release with EGB15 exhibiting the highest value. The EGA and EGB samples displayed good anticariogenic potential, which was sustained for 28 days without any deleterious effect on the shear bond strength and microhardness.

This study reports on the synthesis of bi-metal compound (BMC) adsorbents based on commercial coconut activated carbon (CAC), surface-modified with metal acetate (ZnAc2), metal oxide (ZnO), and the basic compounds potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The adsorbents were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis, microporosity analysis through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and thermal stability via thermogravimetric analysis. Adsorption-desorption test was conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of H2S via 1 L adsorber and 1000 ppm H2S balanced 49.95% for N2 and CO2. Characterization results revealed that the impregnated solution homogeneously covered the adsorbent surface, morphology, and properties. The adsorption test result reveals that the ZnAc2/ZnO/CAC_B had a higher H2S breakthrough adsorption capacity and performed at larger than 90% capability compared with a single modified adsorbent (ZnAc2/CAC). Therefore, the synthesized BMC adsorbents have a high H2S loading, and the abundance and low cost of CAC may lead to favorable adsorbents in H2S captured.

A "Janus particle" refers to the production of two materials in a single system and shows a difference in physical characteristics, and two surfaces participate in the formation with different chemistries. This research generated the Janus using a hybrid of zinc oxide (ZnO) and gold (Au) on the sensor surface toward making high-performance DNA sensors. The Janus ZnO/Au-textured film was synthesized via the one-step sol-gel method, which involves a suitable ratio of a mixture of ZnO sol seed solution. The synthesized Janus ZnO/Au-textured film undergoes a low-temperature aqueous hydrothermal route to synthesize quasi-one-dimensional nanowires. The average grain size in the Janus ZnO/Au nanotextured wire was 41.60 nm. The fabricated nanotextured wire was further optimized by tuning the thickness and characterized by XRD and high-resolution microscopy. Electrical characterization was conducted on the Janus ZnO/Au nanotextured wire coupled with an interdigitated electrode sensor to detect the specific leptospirosis DNA strand. The generated device is capable of detecting lower DNA concentration at 1 × 10-13 M with a sensitivity of 8.54 MΩ M-1 cm-2 . The high performance is attained on linear concentrations of 10-6 -10-13 M with the determination coefficient, "I = 135437.63C-3609.07" R2 = 0.9551. A potential strategy is proposed as a base for developing different high-performance sensors.

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) and its reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide nanocomposite (rGO-ZnO) was used for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous medium. By employing a variety of characterization techniques, morphological and structural properties of the adsorbents were determined. The adsorption study was done by varying concentration, temperature, pH, time, and amount of adsorbent. The results obtained confirmed that rGO-ZnO is a more economical and promising adsorbent for removing Cr (VI) as compared to GO. Kinetic study was also performed, which suggested that sorption of Cr (VI) follows the pseudo-first-order model. For equilibrium study, non-linear Langmuir was found a better fitted model than its linearized form. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated for GO and rGO-ZnO nanocomposite were 19.49 mg/g and 25.45 mg/g, respectively. Endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption was detected with positive values of ΔS (change in entropy), which reflects the structural changes happening at the liquid/solid interface.

Recently, hetero junction materials (p-n-p and n-p-n) have been developed for uplifting the visible light activity to destroy the harmful pollutants in wastewater. This manuscript presents a vivid description of novel n-p-n junction materials namely CeO2-PPy-ZnO. This novel n-p-n junction was applied as the photocatalyst in drifting the mobility of charge carriers and hence obtaining the better photocatalytic activity when compared with p-n and pure system. Such catalyst's syntheses were successful via the copolymerization method. The structural, morphological and optical characterization techniques were applied to identify the physio-chemical properties of the prepared materials. Additionally, the superior performance of this n-p-n nanostructured material was demonstrated in the destruction of micro organic (chlorophenol) toxic wastes under visible light. The accomplished ability of the prepared catalysts (up to 92% degradation of chlorophenol after 180 min of irradiation) and their profound degradation mechanism was explained in detail.

BiFeO3 nanoparticle decorated on flower-like ZnO (BiFeO3/ZnO) was fabricated through a facile hydrothermal-reflux combined method. This material was utilized as a composite photocathode for the first time in microbial fuel cell (MFC) to reduce the copper ion (Cu2+) and power generation concomitantly. The resultant BiFeO3/ZnO-based MFC displayed distinct photoelectrocatalytic activities when different weight percentages (wt%) BiFeO3 were used. The 3 wt% BiFeO3/ZnO MFC achieved the maximum power density of 1.301 W m-2 in the catholyte contained 200 mg L-1 of Cu2+ and the power density was greatly higher than those pure ZnO and pure BiFeO3 photocathodes. Meanwhile, the MFC exhibited 90.7% removal of Cu2+ within 6 h under sunlight exposure at catholyte pH 4. The addition of BiFeO3 nanoparticles not only manifested outstanding capability in harvesting visible light, but also facilitated the formation of Z-scheme BiFeO3/ZnO heterojunction structure to induce the charge carrier transfer along with enhanced redox abilities for the cathodic reduction. The pronounced electrical output and Cu2+ reduction efficiencies can be realized through the synergistic cooperation between the bioanode and BiFeO3/ZnO photocathode in the MFC. Furthermore, the developed BiFeO3/ZnO composite presented a good stability and reusability of photoelectrocatalytic activity up to five cyclic runs.

The current novel work presents the optimization of factors affecting defluoridation by Al doped ZnO nanoparticles using response surface methodology (RSM). Al doped ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel method and validated by FTIR, XRD, TEM/EDS, TGA, BET, and particle size analysis. Moreover, a central composite design (CCD) was developed for the experimental study to know the interaction between Al doped ZnO adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of fluoride, and contact time on fluoride removal efficiency (response) and optimization of the process. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was achieved to discover the importance of the individual and the effect of variables on the response. The model predicted that the response significantly correlated with the experimental response (R2 = 0.97). Among the factors, the effect of adsorbent dose and contact time was considered to have more influence on the response than the concentration. The optimized process parameters by RSM presented the adsorbent dosage: 0.005 g, initial concentration of fluoride: 1.5 g/L, and contact time: 5 min, respectively. Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies were also investigated. The co-existing ions were also studied. These results demonstrated that Al doped ZnO could be a promising adsorbent for effective defluoridation for water.

Textile industry is one of the most environmental unfriendly industrial processes due to the massive generation of colored wastewater contaminated with dyes and other chemical auxiliaries. These contaminants are known to have undesirable consequences to ecosystem. The present study investigated the best operating parameters for the removal of congo red (CR, as the model for dye wastewater) by orange peels extract biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) via photocatalysis in an aqueous solution. The response surface methodology (RSM) with ZnO NPs loadings (0.05-0.20 g), pH (3.00-11.00), and initial CR concentration (5-20 ppm) were used for the optimization process. The applicability of ZnO NPs in the dye wastewater treatment was evaluated based on the techno-economic analysis (TEA). ZnO NPs exhibited hexagonal wurtzite structure with = C-H, C-O, -C-O-C, CC, O-H as the main functional groups. The maximum degradation of CR was more than 96% with 0.171 g of ZnO NPs, at pH 6.43 and 5 ppm of CR and 90% of the R2 coefficient. The specific cost of ZnO NPs production is USD 20.25 per kg. These findings indicated that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs with orange peels extract provides alternative method for treating dye wastewater.

An innovative nano-base polymer that scavenges radicals and reactive oxygen species exhibits potential antibacterial properties, which are crucial in the biomedical field, particularly in reducing nosocomial infections. However, the safety of this nano-based polymer, which has direct contact with the human system, has not been fully understood. The present study investigated the cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility responses of linear low-density polyethylene polymer (LLDPE) embedded with difference ratios of heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites. Exposure of the blood and fibroblast cells to LLDPE/100Z and LLDPE/25T75Z/10% nanocomposite films for 48 and 72 h decreased their viability by less than 40%, compared with LLDPE, LLDPE/100T and LLDPE/25T75Z/5% nanocomposite films. It also presented possible cellular damage and cytotoxicity, which was supported by the findings from the significant release of extracellular lactate dehydrogenase profiles and cell survival assay Further observation using an electron microscope revealed that LLDPE films with heterogeneous 25T75Z/5% promoted cell adhesion. Moreover, no hemolysis was detected in all ratios of heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO nanocomposite in LLDPE film as it was less than 0.2%, suggesting that these materials were hemocompatible. This study on LLDPE film with heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated favorable biocompatible properties that were significant for advanced biomedical polymer application in a hospital setting.

This study examines the effect of nanoparticles with zinc oxides (ZnONPs) on diabetic nephropathy, which is the primary cause of mortality for diabetic patients with end-stage renal disease. Diabetes in adult male rats was induced via intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. ZnONPs were intraperitoneally administered to diabetic rats daily for 7 weeks. Diabetes was associated with increases in blood glucose level, 24-h urinary albumin excretion rate, glomerular basement membrane thickness, renal oxidative stress markers, and renal mRNA or protein expression of transforming growth factor-β1, fibronectin, collagen-IV, tumour necrosis factor-α and vascular endothelial growth factor-A. Moreover, the expression of nephrin and podocin, and the mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 were decreased in the diabetic group. These changes were not detected in the control group and were significantly prevented by ZnONP treatment. These results provide evidence that ZnONPs ameliorate the renal damage induced in a diabetic rat model of nephropathy through improving renal functionality; inhibiting renal fibrosis, oxidative stress, inflammation and abnormal angiogenesis; and delaying the development of podocyte injury. The present findings may help design the clinical application of ZnONPs for protection against the development of diabetic nephropathy.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) isolated from plant biomass have attracted considerable interests in polymer engineering. The limitations associated with CNF-based nanocomposites are often linked to the time-consuming preparation methods and lack of desired surface functionalities. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of preparing a multifunctional CNF-zinc oxide (CNF-ZnO) nanocomposite with dual antibacterial and reinforcing properties via a facile and efficient ultrasound route. We characterized and examined the antibacterial and mechanical reinforcement performances of our ultrasonically induced nanocomposite. Based on our electron microscopy analyses, the ZnO deposited onto the nanofibrous network had a flake-like morphology with particle sizes ranging between 21 to 34 nm. pH levels between 8-10 led to the formation of ultrafine ZnO particles with a uniform size distribution. The resultant CNF-ZnO composite showed improved thermal stability compared to pure CNF. The composite showed potent inhibitory activities against Gram-positive (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and Gram-negative Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) bacteria. A CNF-ZnO-reinforced natural rubber (NR/CNF-ZnO) composite film, which was produced via latex mixing and casting methods, exhibited up to 42% improvement in tensile strength compared with the neat NR. The findings of this study suggest that ultrasonically-synthesized palm CNF-ZnO nanocomposites could find potential applications in the biomedical field and in the development of high strength rubber composites.

Powdered-photocatalysis of organic wastewater is widely investigated, unfortunately not industrially implemented due to its high energy requirement. Interestingly, such issue may be alleviated via the elimination of mechanical stirring required. Core-shell ZnO-based photocatalysts were developed herein, subsequently demonstrated efficient photocatalytic activities in the absence of mechanical stirring. Results show that the developed SiO2-cored ZnO photocatalyst are highly crystalline, while significantly smaller than coreless, pure ZnO due to the multi-point crystallization prompted. Additionally, it is also inherited with considerable buoyancy ability from SiO2-core in the absence of mechanical stirring, concurrently rendered with UV-active properties due to its ZnO-shell. Experimentally, 55% of particles of ZnO_0.0025 (0.0025 mol of ZnO-deposition) were found stably suspended for 60 min in liquid substrate, as opposed to the instant-settling of pure ZnO particles. In term of photocatalytic activity, ZnO_0.01 manifested the best methylene blue (MB) degradation with 150 mL/min of O2-bubbling. 67.63% of MB was degraded with photocatalyst loading of 0.2 g/L after 120 min UV-irradiation, simultaneously recorded the highest pseudo-first order reaction constant of 9.636 × 10-3 min-1. As summary, the auto-suspending photocatalysis conceptualized in current study offers a high possibility in reducing energy requirement for photo-treatment of wastewater, hence advocating its industrialization potential in near future.

In this work, mesoporous TiO2-modified ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were immobilised on a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymer using a solution casting method for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics under fluorescent light irradiation. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the floating hybrid polymer film catalyst (8%-ZT@LLDPE). The highest removal (89.5%) of TC (40 mg/L) was achieved within 90 min at pH 9 due to enhanced water uptake by the LDDPE film and the surface roughness of the hybrid film. The formation of heterojunctions increased the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The QDs size-dependent quantum confinement effect leads to the displacement of the conduction band potential of ZnO QDs to more negative energy values than TiO2. The displacement generates more reactive species with higher oxidation ability. The highly stable film photocatalyst can be separated easily and can be repeatedly used up to 8 cycles without significant loss in the photocatalytic ability. The scavenging test indicates that the main species responsible for the photodegradation was O2●-. The proposed photodegradation mechanism of TC was demonstrated in further detail based on the intermediates detected by LC-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (LC/TOF-MS).

Magnesium has been recognized as a groundbreaking biodegradable biomaterial for implant applications, but its use is limited because it degrades too quickly in physiological solutions. This paper describes the research on the influence of polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS)/zinc oxide (ZnO) composite coating (PCL/CS/ZnO) on the corrosion resistance and antibacterial activity of magnesium. The PCL/CS film presented a porous structure with thickness of about 40-50 μm, while after incorporation of ZnO into the PCL/CS, a homogenous film without pores and defects was attained. The ZnO embedded in PCL/CS enhanced corrosion resistance by preventing corrosive ions diffusion in the magnesium substrate. The corrosion, antibacterial, and cell interaction mechanism of the PCL/CS/ZnO composite coating is discussed in this study. In vitro cell culture revealed that the PCL/CS coating with low loaded ZnO significantly improved cytocompatibility, but coatings with high loaded ZnO were able to induce some cytotoxicity osteoblastic cells. It was also found that enhanced antibacterial activity of the PCL/CS/ZnO coating against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria, while less significant antibacterial activity was detected for uncoated Mg and PCL/CS coating. Based on the results, the PCL/CS coatings loaded with low ZnO content may be recommended as a candidate material for biodegradable Mg-based orthopedic implant applications.

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry fragment analysis remains a challenging task. The fragment appearance regularity (FAR) rule is particularly useful for two-element compounds such as ZnO. Ion fragments appearing in the form of ZnxOy obey the rule [Formula: see text] in the positive secondary ion spectrum and [Formula: see text] in the negative spectrum where the valence of Zn is + 2 and that of O is - 2. Fragment analysis in gallium-doped ZnO (GZO) films can give insights into the bonding of the elements in this important semiconductor. Fragment analysis of 1 and 7 wt% GZO films shows that only the negative ion fragments obey the FAR rule where ZnO‒, 66ZnO‒, 68ZnO‒ and ZnO2‒ ion fragments appear. In the positive polarity, subdued peaks from out-of-the-rule ZnO+, 66ZnO+ and 68ZnO+ ion fragments are observed. The Ga ion peaks are present in both the positive and negative spectra. The secondary ion spectra of undoped ZnO also shows consistency with the FAR rule. This implies that Ga doping even in amounts that exceed the ZnO lattice limit of solubility does not affect the compliance with the FAR rule.
