Struktur-nano TiO2 dengan pelbagai saiz dan bentuk telah disintesis melalui kaedah hidrotermal menggunakan serbuk nanozarah TiO2 sebagai prekursor. Sistem hidrotermal yang mudah, murah dan bebas templet pada suhu rawatan 180ºC, pengaruh medium alkali dengan penambahan NaOH dan KOH ke atas saiz, morfologi dan sifat fotovoltaik struktur-nano TiO2 telah dikaji. Sampel telah diperincikan oleh mikroskopi elektron transmisi (TEM), analisis penyebaran tenaga sinar-x (EDAX) manakala keupayaan fotovoltaik sel suria sensitif pewarna (DSSC) diukur menggunakan Gamry Potentiostat Series G-300. Hasil kajian dengan menggunakan agen alkali yang berlainan (NaOH dan KOH) jelas mempengaruhi morfologi TiO2 dan sel suria sensitif pewarna yang terdiri daripada struktur nanorod TiO2 menunjukkan keupayaan terbaik dengan voltan litar terbuka (Voc) sebanyak 416.8 mV, ketumpatan arus litar terbuka (Jsc) sebanyak 0.169 mA/cm2 dan kecekapan penukaran (η) sebanyak 0.0232% di bawah iluminasi lampu xenon AM 1.5.
The use of technology in teaching and learning is increasingly synonymous with the existence of multiple online platforms. Online teaching and learning guides help lecturers and students to obtain a variety of information related to their specialization in the field of study. As all UiTM students at the Diploma level are required to take and pass the Entrepreneurial Basic course (ENT300), they need to produce an entrepreneurial project as one of the course evaluation components. However, the number of science and technology based entrepreneurship projects and products are still too few based on project titles every semester. The ENT300 Kiosk Science and Technology (KENTS) was developed specifically as a guide for the students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics and has been improved by expanding its scope to the students of the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science at UiTM Johor. A more global scope in KENTS provides specialized online guides for lecturers and students in the science and technology clusters. KENTS is a platform that can be used to realize the direction of higher education in Malaysia and to assist UiTM in producing holistic graduates with entrepreneurship. This online guide platform provides teaching and learning assistance through the custom business template which is categorized into two, system development and machine design. KENTS provides a search function from a list of compilations of science-based and entrepreneurial projects that help lecturers and students find entrepreneurial ideas. KENTS database is used to store student entrepreneurial project information as an e-learning platform that can be shared by lecturers and students globally.
Identifying courses and determining the number of classesto be opened are among the importantstepsin the early stage of classtimetable preparation. Any mistake that happened during thisstage will not only cause problemsto students but also disrupt other parties. Students will not be able to register courses as a result of an incomplete class timetable, while excess classes will result in lecturers wasting their time in empty classrooms. Further, the situation would also increase stress among lecturers who are also members of the timetable committee as they need to postpone classes to fix the timetable immediately. Based on Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Tansformation Program (TRANS4U), Faculty of Business and Management (FBM), UiTM Cawangan Terengganu have taken the initiative to further examine the issue and recommended the relevant process to be enhanced. Upon analysis of the primary causes of the problem and recommendation by team members, an electronic data managementsystem known as Course Setting and Tracking (CSETT) was developed. CSETT enables students to plan and monitor courses while providing latest information to be used by AcademicAdministrators and otherrelevant parties. With an up-to-date and easily accessed information, class timetable could be prepared accurately and fast. The effectiveness of CSETT was proven when class time table was able to be prepared within seven days compared to 14 days prior to system implementation.
Short tandem repeat (STR) analysis is used in chimerism monitoring after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for patients with various hematologic malignancies. Commercial forensic STR kits often contain loci with huge differences in power of discrimination (PD) across populations, causing some loci to be less informative for chimerism analysis in certain populations. This study aimed to construct a new STR multiplex panel with highly informative loci for efficient chimerism analysis. Thirteen STR markers which exhibit high PD (> 0.9) in at least 80% of 50 populations globally were selected to form a new panel and used in STR analysis of 253 Malaysian subjects. Cumulative power of discrimination (CPD) and combined power of exclusion (CPE) were determined from 253 Malaysian individuals. Loci informativity was assessed and compared to the commercial AmpFLSTR Identifiler PCR Amplification kit in 14 donor-recipient pairs. The new panel had detected 202 unique alleles including five novel alleles from the 253 individuals with high CPD and CPE (> 0.99999999999999999 and > 0.999999997 respectively). All loci from the new panel in the donor-recipient pair analysis showed higher than 50% informativity, while five loci from the commercial kit demonstrated lower than 50% informativity. Four loci from the new panel ranked the highest informativity. A sequenced allelic ladder which consists of 202 unique alleles from the 253 subjects was also developed to ensure accurate allele designation. The new 13-loci STR panel, thus, could serve as an additional powerful, accurate, and highly informative panel for chimerism analysis for HSCT patients.
Microbial production of natural products using metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches often involves
the assembly of multiple gene fragments including regulatory elements, especially when using eukaryotes as hosts.
Traditional cloning strategy using restriction enzyme digestion and ligation are laborious and inflexible owing to the
high number of sequential cloning steps, limited cutting sites and generation of undesired ‘scar’ sequences. In this study,
a homology-based isothermal DNA assembly method was carried out for one-step simultaneous assembly of multiple DNA
fragments to engineer plant phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Rapid construction of yeast
plasmid harboring dual gene expression cassettes was achieved via isothermal assembly of four DNA fragments designed
with 20 bp overlapping sequences. The rate-limiting enzyme of phenylpropanoid pathway, cinnamate 4-hydroxylase
encoded by C4H gene from Polygonum minus was cloned in tandem with yeast promoter and terminator elements of S.
cerevisiae for efficient construction of phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway in recombinant yeast. The assembled pAGCAT (C4H-ADH1t-TEF1p) shuttle plasmid and transformation of S. cerevisiae with the plant C4H gene were confirmed
via PCR analysis. Based on these findings, the yeast shuttle plasmid harboring P. minus phenylpropanoid biosynthesis
gene was efficiently constructed to be the starting platform for the production of plant natural products in geneticallyengineered S. cerevisiae.
In early 2001, Nadi IT (the IT department of the UMMC) migrated the UMMC leased line from its old 64 kbps line 10 the 34 Mbps University of Malaya leased line. The migration was a new leuning experience for Nadi IT and many lessons were learnt along the way. This paper describes the ideOll behind the migration process, the reason (or the migration, problems and solutions 10 aU these problems as well as the benefits derived from the migration. Malaysian economy relies on palm oil industries as a driver for rural development. However, palm oil mill effluent
(POME) that is generated from palm oil processing stages causes major environmental challenges. Before being
released to the environment, POME treatment is crucial to comply with standard discharge limit. Microalgae have
demonstrated excellent potential for phycoremediating POME and capturing CO2
. In this study, local microalgae isolate
such as Chlamydomonas sp. UKM 6 and Chlorella spp. UKM 8 were used for POME treatment in 21 days with different
inoculum sizes (5%, 10% and 15%). In addition, an integrated treatment process was performed by taking the treated
POME supernatant for cultivation of Chorella spp. UKM 2, Chorella sorokiniana UKM 3 and Chlorella vulgaris for CO2
sequestration study. Different CO2
concentrations (5%, 10% and 15%) were used and the experiments were carried
out in 10 days under continuous illumination. The results showed that among two species involves in POME treatment,
Chlamydomonas sp. UKM 6 showed a great potential to remove pollutant such as COD (56%), nitrogen (65%) and
phosphorus (34%). The biomass after POME treatment and CO2
biofixation content high lipid (90 mg lipid/g biomass)
which can be the potential source for biodiesel production. In CO2
sequestration study, C. sorokininana UKM3 able
to takes up to 15% CO2
with CO2
uptake rate of 273 mgL-1d-1. In this study, the integrated system of POME treatment
and CO2
sequestration were feasible using microalgae.
Introduction: Archidendron bubalinum is an underutilised plant with numerous antioxidant properties and has a great potential to inhibit enzymes linked with diabetes and obesity. Food irradiation is an advanced technology to prolong the lifespan of plant, prevent physical spoilage and eradicate food borne disease. Present study was aimed to determine the total antioxidant activity, enzymatic inhibition against alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase and pancre- atic lipase and the toxicity levels of non-irradiated and irradiated (3, 6, 9 & 12 kGy) hot aqueous extract of A. bubal- inum. Methods: The antioxidant ability of the extract was determined by total phenolic content (TPC), total flavanoid content (TFC), Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), β-carotene assay and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) assay. The inhibitory activities were evaluated using α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase inhibition as- say. The toxicity levels of A. bubalinum extract were determined using Brine shrimp and Zebra-fish assays. Results: Results showed that irradiated A. bubalinum at 12 kGy demonstrated the highest TFC (448.99 ± 5.02 mg GAE/g), FRAP (2.55 ± 0.40 mmol Fe2+/g) and β-carotene bleaching activity (79.49%). Whereas, non-irradiated A. bubalinum samples expressed the highest TPC (2517.07 ± 15.81 mg GAE/g) and exhibited the lowest IC50 values of α-amylase (31.99 ± 3.15 μg/ml), α-glucosidase (23.40 ± 0.69μg/ml) and pancreatic lipase (32.81 ± 7.96 μg/ml) activity. The toxicity assays also showed no significant different between irradiated and non-irradiated samples. Conclusion: The study suggests that gamma irradiation has the prospective future to increase antioxidant properties and maintaining the enzyme inhibitory activities to preserve the sample of A. bubalinum for commercial purposes.
Introduction: Coated archwires improve aesthetics because of the tooth-coloured appearance. However, colour change of the coated archwires have been reported in vitro. Nonetheless, little is known to what extent this colour change occurs clinically. This second part of the multi-centre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial evaluated the colour change (E*) of three coated archwires with their controls and patient perception. Methods: 84 patients who received treatment with upper and lower fixed appliance treatment were invited. Consented patients were randomised to receive one of four treatment interventions using 0.014” superelastic nickel-titanium archwires from
(1) Orthocare (2) RMO (3) G&H, and (4) 3M Unitek® uncoated. These archwires were ligated during bonding and collected after 8th week. After removal, the digital images of the archwires were assessed for colour change using Adobe® Photoshop® software, and the CIE L*a*b* system was used to calculate the ΔE* values. Patient perception was measured using oral aesthetic subjective impact scale (OASIS) questionnaire. Results: For colour change and patient perception assessment, 132 archwires from 66 participants who had been treated with aesthetic archwires were collected. Two fractured archwires were excluded. Initial analysis revealed all three aesthetic archwires groups showed significant mean of E* with the highest was found in Orthocare (23.9), and the lowest is G&H (16.8). This data article presents on the ectoparasites infestation on small mammals in Peninsular Malaysia. The dataset on ectoparasites infestation is important because it raises a major medical concern regarding the spread of potentially zoonotic disease from wildlife to human. Tick and chigger are the primary ectoparasites as reservoirs of vector-borne diseases found on small mammals in Malaysia. These small mammals that are infested with ectoparasites occupy various types of habitats, including human settlements, could be of community health risks as the carriers of potentially zoonotic diseases. Field samplings were conducted from February 2015 to February 2016 in three different ecological habitats of mixed dipterocarp forest, coastal forest and insular forest, in Terengganu, Malaysia. A total of 35 and 22 species of bats and rodents respectively were captured and examined for ectoparasites. Twenty-three species of bats and 16 species of small mammal were recorded as hosts for at least one species of ectoparasites. These findings show that the highest ectoparasite infestation occurred on bat community.
This study sought to examine the reliability and validity of height measurements using a portable
stadiometer as compared to a mechanical scale. Samples from 142 adults aged 22 to 57 were taken during data collection in November 2014. There was a high degree of reliability for the inter-examiner, intraexaminer and inter-instrument aspects with regards to mean difference, the inter correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman Plot. For the inter-examiner aspect, the height measurement taken by the first examiner was 0.01 cm higher than that by the second examiner with an ICC of 0.999. For the intraexaminer aspect, the difference was 0.1 cm; this was higher in the first measurement compared to the second. The ICC was also 0.999. For the inter-instrument aspect, measurement taken by stadiometer was 0.61 cm higher than the measurement taken by mechanical scale and the ICC was 0.997. The Bland-Altman plot showed a distribution of differences between measurements in the inter-examiner, intraexaminer and inter-instrument aspects that were close to zero within the narrow range of ±1.96SD. The technical error of measurement (TEM), coefficient of reliability (R) and coefficient of variation (CV) for the inter-examiner, intra-examiner and inter-instrument aspects were within the acceptable limits. This study suggests that the portable stadiometer is reliable and valid for use in community surveys.
Copper(II) ternary complex, [Cu(phen)(C-dmg)(H2O)]NO3 was evaluated against a panel of cell lines, tested for in vivo efficacy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma xenograft models as well as for toxicity in NOD scid gamma mice. The Cu(II) complex displayed broad spectrum cytotoxicity against multiple cancer types, including lung, colon, central nervous system, melanoma, ovarian, and prostate cancer cell lines in the NCI-60 panel. The Cu(II) complex did not cause significant induction of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A and 1A enzymes but moderately inhibited CYP isoforms 1A2, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6, 2B6, 2C8 and 3A4. The complex significantly inhibited tumor growth in nasopharyngeal carcinoma xenograft bearing mice models at doses which were well tolerated without causing significant or permanent toxic side effects. However, higher doses which resulted in better inhibition of tumor growth also resulted in toxicity.
The chemical compositions, in vitro and in silico anti-dengue activity of the essential oils of the rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn., C. aeruginosa Roxb., and C. xanthorrhiza Roxb. had been investigated. The C. longa oil was mainly composed of ar-turmerone (54.0%) and curlone (17.7%), while the C. aeruginosa oil was rich in curzerenone (23.4%), 1,8-cineole (21.2%), and camphor (7.1%). Xanthorrhizol (21.6%), β-curcumene (19.5%), ar-curcumene (14.2%), and camphor (9.2%) were the major compounds in the C. xanthorrhiza oil. Among the oils, the C. longa oil was found to be the most active NSB-NS3 protease inhibitor (IC50 1.98 μg/mL). PLS biplot disclosed that the essential oils were classified into three separated clusters based on their characteristic chemical compositions, with C. longa positioned closest to the in vitro anti-dengue activity. Four compounds from the C. longa oil have both hydrogen and hydrophobic bonds that could be responsible for the DENV-2 NS2B-NS3 inhibitory effect.
The interaction of green zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with bacterial strains are still scarcely reported. This work was conducted to study the green-one-pot-synthesized ZnO NPs from the Aloe Vulgarize (AV) leaf peel extract assisted with different sonication techniques followed by the physicochemical, biological activities and molecular docking studies. The NPs structure was analyzed using FTIR, UV-vis and EDX. The morphology, particle size and crystallinity of ZnO NPs were identified using FESEM and XRD. It was found that the formed flower-like structure with sharp edge and fine size of particulates in ZnO NPs/AV could enhance the bacterial inhibition. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for all the tested bacterial strains is at 3.125 µg/ml and the bacterial growth curve are dependent on the ZnO NPs dosage. The results of disc diffusion revealed that the ZnO NPs/AV possess better antibacterial effect with bigger ZOI due to the presence of AV active ingredient. The molecular docking between active ingredients of AV in the NPs with the protein of IFCM and 1MWU revealed that low binding energy (Ebind = -6.56 kcal/mol and -8.99 kcal/mol, respectively) attributes to the excessive hydrogen bond from AV that highly influenced their interaction with the amino acid of the selected proteins. Finally, the cytotoxicity test on the biosynthesized ZnO NPs with concentration below 20 µg/ml are found nontoxic on the HDF cell. Overall, ZnO NPs/20 % AV (probe sonication) is considered as the best synthesis option due to its efficient one-pot method, short sonication time but own the best antibacterial effect.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing and concerning threat to global public health, necessitating innovative strategies to combat this crisis. Amidine-containing compounds have emerged as promising agents in the battle against AMR. This review gives a summary of recent advances from the past decade in studies of antimicrobial amidine-containing compounds with the aim to feature their structural diversity and the pharmacological relevance of the moiety to antimicrobial activity and their potential use in combating antimicrobial resistance, to the greatest extent possible. Highlighting is put on chemical structure of such compounds in relation to antimicrobial activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic activities. Researchers commonly modify molecules containing amidine or incorporate amidine into existing antimicrobial agents to enhance their pharmacological attributes and combat antimicrobial resistance. This comprehensive review consolidates the current knowledge on amidine-containing compounds, elucidating their antimicrobial mechanisms and highlighting their promise in addressing the global AMR crisis. By offering a multidisciplinary perspective, we aim to inspire further research and innovation in this critical area of antimicrobial research.
Various factors contribute to suicidal attempt. This study aims to determine the relationship between suicidal attempt and its associated factors among school-going adolescents in Malaysia. Data from the National Health and Morbidity 2017 survey were analyzed. This survey was implemented as a nationwide school-based survey targeting adolescents 13 to 17 years old. Descriptive and multiple logistic regression analysis was done using SPSS version 20. A total of 27 399 adolescents participated in this survey. The prevalence of suicidal attempt was 6.9% (95% confidence interval = 6.2-7.7). Multivariate analysis found that the odds of suicidal attempt among adolescent with depression is 4.3 (adjusted odds ratio = 4.3; 95% confidence interval = 3.9-4.8). Other significant factors are young adolescent, non-Malay ethnicities especially Indian, adolescent with parents living apart, and those without peer support and parental connectedness. A holistic approach for the planning of preventative strategies and public health policies should be made according to these risk factors.

Parental protective factors do play an important role in preventing Internet addiction. A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure health risk behaviors among Malaysian adolescents. The prevalence of Internet addiction was significantly higher among adolescents with perceived lack of parental supervision (30.1% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 28.7-31.4]) and lack of parental connectedness (30.1% [95% CI = 28.5-31.7]), compared with their counterparts. Adolescents who perceived a lack of parental supervision, respect for privacy, connectedness, and bonding were more likely to have Internet addiction: (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.39; 95% CI = 1.27-1.52), (aOR = 1.23; 95% CI = 1.16-1.31), (aOR = 1.09; 95% CI = 1.02-1.16), (aOR = 1.06; 95% CI = 1.00-1.12), respectively. Among girls, Internet addiction was associated with those who perceived lack in all 4 parental factors, while among boys, those who perceived lack of parental supervision and respect for privacy were more prone to Internet addiction.
