This is an interesting comparison between the types of leprosy seen among Chinese, Malays and Indians in Malaya, based on a large experience. The disease is most virulent among Chinese and least so among Indians, three-fourths of the cases among the latter being of mild tuberculoid disease with a tendency to self-healing, but among the Chinese only one-third are of the tuberculoid type. The climate of Malaya is of the hot humid type, in which leprosy flourishes. On the other hand, a higher standard of living than in India tends to hinder the spread of the disease. The age incidence is important. Among, the Chinese, early macules are commonly found in children of 5 to 15 years of age, most of which tend to clear up, but in about one-fourth tuberculoid lesions develop and may go on to the lepromatous condition, especially if the onset of the tuberculoid stage occurs early. When a reliable history is obtained in Chinese, in nearly every lepromatous case a tuberculoid stage was first observed, commonly in the age group 16-40. In a smaller number of persons of over 40 years of age, the proportion of tuberculoid cases is very much higher, but the tendency to become lepromatous is very much less. Major tuberculoid cases are more liable than minor to become lepromatous, but nerve thickening in tuberculoid leprosy is less evident in Chinese than in Indians and it is rare in children and in those over 40. In view of the foregoing peculiarity of the evolution of leprosy in tuberculoid cases in Chinese subjects, active treatment is necessary, in order to prevent them becoming lepromatous. For this purpose, intradermal injections are of little value and they tend to obscure any evolutionary changes. Hydnocarpus oil or esters (deep subcutaneous injections) should therefore be pushed to the limit of tolerance in doses of 1 cc. per 10 pounds body weight twice weekly, or 30 cc. per week, for a patient of 150 Ibs. as a minimum and increased by at least fifty per cent, in acute or reacting cases, when improvement may be expected within three months. Some years' experience of this intensive treatment as compared with weekly injections of 1-5 cc. has shown much more marked improvement and much less incidence of lepromatous change with the high doses. In lepromatous cases, reactions should be avoided, but dosage should be as high as possible short of producing increased erythrocyte sedimentation and plantar pain on heavy stroking. Surveys of school children are of great importance in finding the early macular stage and their discovery may lead to the detection of infective adults who require to be segregated. L. Rogers.

This paper studied the heat transfer in an asphalt solar collector with small scale geometry.
Solar energy reaches the earth and consequently increases the temperature of the ground, which then
leads to the increase of the temperature of the air. Water circulates through a series of pipes embedded
in the asphalt pavement for the extraction of solar energy. The radiation in this study was produced
from the top asphalt pavement. In this study, the temperature of the asphalt pavement decreased when
solar energy was collected from the circulating water. This reduces the heat island effect in the city and
decreases the power consumption for air conditioning. The temperature is distributed between the
asphalt pavement and the inner pipes. Increase of the flow rate has a great influence on the energy
collection by reducing the temperature of the asphalt pavement. The result of this test was obtained
using a small-scale asphalt pavement, which showed a high amount of heat collected.

A simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method to determine the content of betulinic acid (BA) in rat plasma collected at different times (0-8 h) after oral administration of Orthosiphon stamineus leaf extract was developed. The features of the assay include protein precipitation using acetonitrile and isocratic elution using reverse phase C-18 column with ultraviolet (UV) detection. The recovery of BA from plasma varied from 98.4 to 102.5%. The R.S.D of intra- and inter-day precision from rat plasma ranged from 4.2 to 9.8%. The maximum concentration of BA in the plasma was 1.2 +/- 0.3 microg/ml at 1 h after oral administration of the extract.

A study was carried out in theJengka Triangle in Pahang to find out the prevalence and a practical cum effective method of treatment and control of scabies. Scabies was the commonest skin lesion among the 5590 people examined. its prevalence being 11.6%. Both sexes were equally affected. Prevalence was high among children and teenagers, the worst affected being the 10 to 14. 2 to 4, 15 to 19 and 5 to 9 year olds. The problem of scabies in Jengka could be due to inadequate and irregular water supply, plus lack of mothers' supervision of the personal hygiene of their children aged > 2 years. The persistence of scabies since 1976 is very likely due to the people's non-compliance with standing instructions on treatment with Benzyl benzoate emulsion A comparative study of treatment of scabies with Gamma Benzene Hexachloride [GBH] and with Benzyl benzoate emulsion [BBE] showed GBH to be the medication of choice. It was more effective and convenient, giving 97.9% cure rate with one application. A hot bath was not necessary. The patients preferred GBH to BBE since it was painless and without side-effects. The cost of treatment with GBH [1 application] was also much less than that with BBE [2 applications]. Only 28.7% of the cases and contacts complied with instructions to do 2nd application of the medication on their own, making it imperative that application be done by the health Staff or under their direct supervision. The majority [87.2%] complied with instructions to place their used clothes in large polythene bags and air these in the sun for two days. This procedure should replace the instructions to boil personal clothes as it is just as effective. yet more convenient and economical. A regular, biannual screening of all kindergarten and primary school children is recommended. Application of GBH to all scabies cases and all close contacts should be done by the health worker. The whole body from neck to soles of feet should have the application, and the people should be instructed to bathe only after 24 hours. They are to go to the nearest clinic or hospital on the 7th day for second application of GBH, if the itchness or lesions persist or reappear. Such supervised medication is possible and will minimise misuse of GBH.

In the present work, the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour was utilised in order to exam- ine and unearth the consumer milk powder purchase intention after the milk powder scare. For this reason, a self-administered questionnaire was developed using established scales. Moreo- ver, a survey on 200 respondents was conducted in Penang, Malaysia through an online survey questionnaire. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) was utilised to analyse the data. The findings revealed that product knowledge, product involvement, and perceived benefit were positively and significantly related to purchase intention. Surprisingly, perceived risk and country of origin's image do not have any significant relationship with purchase inten- tion. Attitude, playing the role of the mediating variable in the present work, was discovered to have a mediating effect on the relationships among product knowledge, product involve- ment, perceived benefit, perceived risk, country of origin's image, and purchase intention regarding milk powder. The present work shines a new light on Malaysian consumers’ purchase intention towards milk powder. Furthermore, the results of the present work can be adopted as a source of reference by milk powder companies in order to formulate strategic marketing plans, for instance during the food scare crisis.

In this paper, Reynolds average Navier stokes models simulation was computed
with standard k-є, realizable k-є and SST k-w.The three models were proposed to forecast the
turbulence flow behaviour inside a rectangular channel with two baffle plates. The geometry
and the grid were generated using commercial CFD software fluent. The flow behaviours of
three models were characterized based on positions of the entrance to the first baffle,
positions between first and second baffle and lastly the second baffle. At the three different
positions the three models studied have demonstrate differences in the velocity profiles and
separation range. Comparison with previous literatures shows applicability of these three
models to produce velocity profile characteristics and separation behaviours. Even though
some of the models have shown slight deviation from the experimental results but in general
the three models were considered to be in close agreement with most published literatures.

Piezoelectric (PZT) shunt damping is an effective method to dissipate energy from a vibrating structure; however, most of the applications focus on targeting specific modes for structures vibrating at low-frequency range, i.e. deterministic substructure (DS). To optimally attenuate structures vibrating at high-frequency range, i.e. non-deterministic substructure (Non-DS) using a PZT shunt damper, it is found that the impedance of the PZT patch's terminal needs to be the complex conjugate of its inherent capacitance paralleled with the impedance 'faced' by its non-deterministic host structure underline moment actuation. The latter was derived in terms of estimation of the effective line moment mobility of a PZT patch on a Non-DS plate by integrating the expression of driving point moment mobility of an infinite thin plate. This paper conducts a parametric investigation to study the effect of changing the size, quantity and configuration of the PZT patch to the performance of the optimal PZT shunt dampers in dissipating the energy of its non-deterministic host structure. Results are shown in terms of energy reduction ratio of the thin plate when attached with optimal PZT shunt damper(s).

A simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to determine the content of andrographolide (AP) and 14-deoxy-11,12-dideoxyandrographolide (DIAP) in a pooled urine of rat obtained within 24h after an oral dose of Andrographis paniculata leaf extract at 1g/kg body weight. Cumulative urinary excretion of AP and DIAP in 24h after oral administration of the extract was 0.88% and 1.61% of oral dose administered, respectively. The extract showed significant reduction (p<0.05) of MDA levels and elevation of total antioxidant status in rat urine samples collected in 24 after oral administration.

INTRODUCTION: Effective antiseptic use is essential in healthcare settings to prevent the spread of diseases, especially in areas with high patient traffic and exposure to various pathogens. One essential pathogenic germ is Acinetobacter baumannii. Octenidine and povidone-iodine have been demonstrated to be effective against A. baumannii in vitro. This study will compare octenidine dihydrochloride and povidone-iodine as wound-cleansing solutions for wounds contaminated with A. baumannii in vivo.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four rats were divided into three groups: normal saline, octenidine dihydrochloride and povidone-iodine. Wounds were made on the rats' backs, and A. baumannii germs were inoculated into the wounds. After 3 hours, the wound was irrigated with wound cleansing solution according to the group for 30 seconds. Each wound was taken swab culture before and after wound irrigation and tissue culture 5 hours after wound irrigation.

RESULTS: All specimens showed bacterial colony growth with a median value of 1.22 × 105 CFU before irrigation. Wound irrigation with normal saline did not reduce colony counts, while there was a 3-log reduction to 5-log reduction in the octenidine and povidone-iodine groups. Statistically, there was no significant difference in the mean number of colonies between the octenidine and povidone-iodine groups after irrigation (p = 0.535). However, 3 hours after irrigation, all specimens that experienced 3-log reduction showed regrowth to more than 1 × 105 CFU. In contrast, specimens subjected to 5-log reduction did not exhibit any regrowth.

CONCLUSION: The antiseptic effectiveness of octenidine dihydrochloride is equivalent to povidone-iodine in eradicating A. baumannii colonies in wounds in vivo.

The aim of this study was to determine possible associations between some prognostic factors and drowning outcome. There were 47 drowning victims during the study period, of whom 39 (83%) survived and 8 (17%) died. All deaths occurred in children aged under 5 including 7 (87.5%) male and 1 (12.5%) female victims. Seven (87.5%) were Iranian and only one (12.5%) was from Afghanistan. Absence of vital signs at hospital arrival, need for resuscitation, GCS < 5 and acidosis all were associated with adverse outcome with a statistical significance (P < 0.05), but hypothermia was the only idependent predictor of poor outcome (OR 13.7; 95% CI 2.27 to 82.7 , P = 0.003). Since prognostic factors do not predict outcome with 100% accuracy, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene and continuing it in the hospital can provide higher chances of recovery for the children.

Various complications are associated with the use of indwelling voice prostheses. We present problems faced by a patient with his Voice-Master prosthesis, the ingestion of the prosthesis followed by a potentially fatal aspiration. The Voice-Master is unique in that in can be re-inserted. The safety strap is removed after primary insertion once the prosthesis is secure. However, during re-insertions this safety mechanism is no longer present. Therefore we recommend the placement of a temporary stitch or tie to minimize the risks of ingestion or aspiration of the prosthesis during re-insertions.
