    The presence of 226 Ra in water is a great concern in human life since it can cause health risk to a certain extent. In the state of Kelantan, being known of its granitic area, there is a lack measurement of 226 Ra content in river water, since water is the major source of water supply. According to the INTERIM National Water Quality Standards for Malaysia (INWQS), 226 Ra activity concentration in water cannot exceed 0.1 Bq/L. For this reasons, this research was planned to carry out a systematic measurement of water along Sungai Kelantan. Liquid Scintillation Counting was used for measurement of 226 Ra in water samples from Sungai Kelantan mainly in district of Kuala Krai. In this paper, the results obtained is about 26 water samples, filtered and unfiltered, collected along Sungai Lebir, Sungai Sok and Bukit Sabah. Thus, the assessment activity concentration of 226 Ra in river water was obtained as well as annual effective dose for consumption of drinking water.

    UV-curable hyperbranched urethane acrylate (HBPUA) from oleic acid of palm oil has been synthesized through a medium aided by p-toluene sulfonic acid as a catalyst. This mixture was then used as the core (HBP) and reacted with palm oil oleic acid to form the hyperbranched polyol (HBP-1). HBPUA was prepared by reacting HBP-1 resin with diisocyanate and hydroxyl-containing acrylate monomer with the presence of 0.1-2 wt% dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. The reaction was confirmed by several analytical data i.e. hydroxyl value (OHV), Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analyses. The HBPUA was easily curable when subjected to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

    Taman Negara is a famous tourism destination for nature lover in Malaysia. The area is well kept from human activities and disturbances. Since there is no data for human exposure to natural radiation, there is a need to do this study. It will give a baseline data for surface dose and radionuclide concentrations and one can estimate the external hazards index for the visitor to this unexplored area, i.e. UiTM-Perhilitan research station, Kuala Keniam, Taman Negara, Malaysia. The surface dose rate measurements were done in-situ using portable radiation survey meter at the surface and 1 m above the surface. The top soil samples were taken using hand auger up to 15 cm depth at nine locations around research station. Samples were brought back to the UiTM laboratory in Shah Alam, dried, ground to powder form, and sieved using 250 μm sieve. Then the uranium and thorium concentrations were analyzed using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF).The mean value for surface dose rates on surface were 0.164 μSv/hr while the mean value for surface dose rates on 1m above the surface were 0.161 μSv/hr. The mean concentration of thorium was 2.62μg/g while the mean concentration of uranium was 0.61μg/g.

    The recovery of uranium from non-conventional sources has its importance in the security of nuclear fuel supply as well as producing a more value-added product to the contaminated source. In this paper, uranium is recovered both by developing a hydrothermal process as well as using the removal method. Developing hydrothermal process involves using high uranium concentrated starting material such as xenotime and thorium hydroxide waste produced from the monazite cracking process. Oxalate separation enable to produce a better uranium and thorium separation from the yttrium in xenotime as compared to the hydroxide precipitation. Also, a solvent extraction stage was included to separate the uranium from the thorium in the process using thorium hydroxide waste. The removal method involves using selective leaching for minerals with lower uranium content such as zircon. A better removal for uranium and thorium in zircon is achieved when a heat treatment process was done prior to the leaching stage. White zircon mineral was produced after this treatment and its quality meets the requirement for white ceramic opacifier and glaze.

    Various environmental samples (seawater, TSS, sediment, rainwater and fly ash) from eight different stations near Kapar coastal area were analyzed. The 210 Po activity concentrations in liquid samples (seawater and rainwater) varied between 0.34 ± 0.03 mBq L-1 to 22.44 ± 0.53 mBq L-1 . Whereas the concentrations in particulate samples (TSS, sediment and fly ash) varied between 43.79 ± 2.31 Bqkg-1 to 364.48 ± 5.43 Bqkg-1 . Results also showed the radioactivity in Kapar coastal is higher than most of Malaysian coast, reaching a factor of seven. This condition is mainly due to the operation of a coal-fired power plant nearby. This study also clarify the variability of 210 Po in environment was strongly influenced from rainfall events especially during wet seasons.

    At present, soil and mineral based building material such as bricks are one of the main components in building construction in Malaysia. This building material is a direct source of radiation exposure since it contains naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). In this study, clay brick samples used were obtained from 7 factories in Selangor and Johore, Malaysia. The activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in these samples of clay bricks were determined using a comparative method and was analysed using gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. The mean values of activity concentrations for 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K were found to be in the range of 39.04 ± 0.88 Bqkg-1 - 73.61 ± 5.32 Bqkg-1, 43.38 ± 2.60 Bqkg-1 - 73.45 ± 1.51 Bqkg-1, and 381.54 ± 11.39 Bqkg-1 - 699.63 ± 15.82 Bqkg-1, respectively. The radiation hazard of NORM in the samples was estimated by calculating the radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin). Radium equivalent activity (Raeq) determined was in the range of 151.90 Bqkg-1 - 194.22 Bqkg-1 which is lower than the limit of 370 Bqkg-1 (equivalent to 1.5 mSvyr-1 ) recommended in the NEA-OECD report in 1979, whereas external hazard index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin) were between 0.20 – 0.26 and 0.52 - 0.71 respectively. The annual effective dose rate exposure to a dweller received from the clay bricks was calculated to be in the range of 0.35 ± 0.18 mSvy-1 - 0.43 ± 0.09 mSvy-1.

    Radon-222 emanation from selected locally produced samples of building materials, used in Malaysia were measured using the Professional Continuous Radon Monitor Model 1027, which is a patented electronic detecting-junction photodiode sensor to measure the concentration of radon gas. Each sample was placed for 72 hours inside a 3.11 x 10 -2 m 3 sealed container. It was found that the average radon concentration Bqm -3 of air for concrete bricks, concrete brick with cemented coatings, concrete brick with cemented coatings and paint samples were, 303.7 Bq/m 3, 436.6 Bqm -3, and 410.7 Bqm -3, respectively. (Bqm -3 ) for brown clay brick, brown clay brick with cemented coatings, brown clay brick with cemented coatings and paint were 166.5 Bqm -3, 166.5 Bqm -3, and 148 Bqm -3, respectively. (Bqm -3 ) for sample of compact ceramic tile was 0 Bqm -3. The findings show that concrete brick samples are important source of radon emanation, while brown clay brick have been accepted as the recommendation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and ceramic tiles had no emanation of radon gas due to their compact surface, or the glazed layer created on the tile surface during the manufacturing process, which blocks radon emanation. A positive correlation between radon emanation and radium content has been observed for both brown clay brick and concrete brick samples whereas a negative correlation for ceramic tile has been observed. Consequently from the findings, in order to reduce radon emanation and radon exposure in house dwellings and in addition to EPA recommendation of sealed cracks and established good ventilation, we recommend concrete walls to be painted and concrete floors to be paved with ceramic tiles.

    Considerable amount of uranium and thorium are found in our local zircon and the level is much higher than the maximum value adopted by Malaysia and many importing countries. Energy Dispersive X-ray Flourescence (EDXRF) proves to be a very valuable tool in the determination of these radioactive elements as it can perform the analysis simultaneously in shorter time. Quantitative analysis of this mineral involves the use of a fundamental parameter technique developed by National Bureau of Standard, USA and Geological Survey Canada (NBS-GSC FPT). The analysis for tin slag is more challenging as there is no reference standard of similar material. Thus the standard addition method was applied to correct the error from the matrix of the sample.

    In Malaysia, mineral processing plant is one of the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) processing industries controlled by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) through the enforcement of Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 304). The activities generated waste which is called as TENORM wastes. TENORM wastes are mainly found in thorium hydroxide from the processing of xenotime and monazite, and iron oxide and red gypsum from the processing of ilmenite. Other TENORM wastes are scales and sludge from the oil and gas industries, tin slag produced from the smelting of tin, and ilmenite, zircon,
    and monazite produced from the processing of tin tailing (amang). The environmental and radiological monitoring program is needed to ensure that the TENORM wastes did not caused any contamination to the environment. The wastes vary in the types of samples, parameters of analysis as well as the frequency of monitoring based on license’s conditions issued by the AELB. The main objective of this study is to assess the suitability of license’s condition and the monitoring program required in oil and gas, and mineral processing
    industries. Study was done by assessing the data submitted to the AELB in order to comply with the licensing requirement. This study had found out that there are a few of license’s conditions that need to be reviewed accordingly based on the processing activity.

    PUSPATI TRIGA Reactor (RTP) is the only nuclear research reactor in Malaysia. It has been safely operated and maintained since 28 June 1982. Over 28 years of operation, some of the reactor systems have been upgraded or replaced to ensure the functionality and safety of the reactor. One of the major reactor systems which is primary cooling system is used to remove heat generated in the reactor core. The former primary cooling system consisting of single unit of shell-and-tube heat exchanger, three centrifugal pumps and piping system was replaced with a new system due to decreasing of the cooling performance. The new primary cooling system, consisting of two units of the 1.5-MW plate-type heat exchangers, new three primary pumps and new piping system was installed in accordance to the specified AELB requirements and guidelines of Nuclear Malaysia Safety, Health and Environment Committee (JKSHE). This paper summarises the replacement process of the former RTP primary cooling system. The activities involved preparation before and during construction and installation phases as well as safety consideration based on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) requirements and Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 514) were discussed and evaluated.

    The Lembah Bujang archeological complex near Sungai Petani, Kedah consists of various structures constructed at different times and spread over a wide area. This paper reports on the thermoluminescence (TL) dating of one of these structures. The structure was found to be 350 ± 90 yrs old. This is very young as compared with other structures that are from the 4th to the 16th centuries. This structure is suspected to be remnant of a Muslim Mosque whereas the other structures were Hindu and Buddist temples.

    A modified potential of the sudden approximation, modified to include interactions among nuclei of different radii, is applied to explain the mass asymmetry of fission fragments in the thermal fission of Uranium-235. The results are encouraging in that the asymmetry feature in the fission yield is displayed. It appears that the mass asymmetry is a feature that can be explained without incorporating other effects. However, close correspondence requires addition of extra features.

    Boron carbide (B4C) is a ceramic material which is effective to absorb thermal neutron due to wide neutron absorption cross section. In this work, B4C is added into concrete as fine aggregates to test the attenuation properties by getting the attenuation coefficient of the concrete/B4C. The samples of concrete/B4C were exposing to the thermal neutron radiation source (241-Americium-Berylium) at the dos rate of 29.08 mR/h. The result show that the attenuation coefficient of the sample with 20wt% B4C is 0.299cm -1 and the sample without B4C is 0.238cm -1 and hence, concrete/B4C is suitable as a shield for thermal neutron radiation.

    Mineral elemental uptake by Colocasia esculenta growing in swamp agroecosystem was studied following 14, 18 or 28 months of field spraying (MAT, months after treatment) with herbicide Gramoxone ® (paraquat). In overall, Al (68226.67 + 24066.56 μg/g dw) was the major element in riverine alluvial swamp soil, followed by micronutrient Fe (22280.00 + 6328.87 μg/g dw).
    Concentration of macronutrient K (20733.33 + 7371.82 μg/g dw) was the highest in swamp taro leaf followed by macronutrient Ca (7050.00 + 3767.26 μg/g dw). In overall, the order of importance of the average mineral concentration in swamp taro leaf was K > Ca > Mn > Al > Na > Fe > Zn > Br > Co. However at 14 MAT, the order of importance of mineral content concentration in swamp taro leaf was K > Ca > Al > Na > Mn > Fe > Zn > Br > Co. At 18 MAT, the order of importance of mineral content concentration in swamp taro leaf was K > Ca > Mn > Al > Fe > Na > Zn > Br > Co. At 28 MAT, the order of importance of mineral content concentration in swamp taro leaf was K > Ca > Mn > Fe > Al > Zn > Na > Br > Co. In overall, the average order of importance of mineral elemental uptake or the soil plant transfer coefficient was Mn > K > Na > Zn > Co > Fe > Al; similar with the order at 28 MAT. However, at 14 MAT the order of importance of the soil plant transfer coefficient was different at Mn > K > Na > Co > Zn > Al > Fe.

    Natural radionuclides such as 210 Po and 210 Pb were analyzed in soft part of cockle (Anadara granosa) obtained from Kuala Selangor in the west coast Peninsular of Malaysia. The activity levels of both nuclides fluctuated within the size of cockles from 41.3 ± 2.5 Bq/kg to 114 ± 7 Bq/kg and 12.9 ± 1.7 Bq/kg to 96.8 ± 5.3 Bq/kg in dry weight (dwt) for 210 Po and 210 Pb, respectively. The level activity in wet weight (wwt) also varied from 8.60 ± 0.52 Bq/kg to 25.70 ± 1.63 Bq/kg and 2.47 ± 0.40 Bq/kg to 19.27 ± 1.05 Bq/kg for 210 Po and 210 Pb, respectively, probably related to the different of metabolic rate and growth of cockles. Activity ratio of 210 Po/ 210 Pb in dry weight also fluctuated from 0.93 to 6.41 with not related to the decay of 210 Pb.

    An air fin cooler system consists of a tube bundle that is used to cool the various processing fluids in process industries that utilizes air as a cooling medium. The said tubes failed when exposed to corrosive environment(s). Tubes located at the bottom row of the air fin cooler were corroded as a result of exposure to rain water, brought in by induced air when the wind blows. The tube material is A179 Carbon steel. Two tubes, namely Tube A and Tube B along with an aluminum fin in each tube were investigated. A leak was observed on tube A, probably due to Corrosion Under Deposit mechanism. A general corrosion attack was observed at tube B, and macroscopic analysis showed that the corrosion occurred along the grain boundaries, which consist of ferrite and pearlite. Microanalysis showed that the corrosion product on the outer surface of the tube consists of Fe, O, S and Cl elements. It is concluded that the humid environment contains corrosive elements such as S and Cl. EDAX analysis on the fin showed that the material is pure aluminum. However, the aluminum was corroded by galvanized corrosion and produced brittle Al2O3 as a result.

    Personal computer (PC) based user interface for equipment control and data acquisition from the nuclear counting system to count nuclear radiation energy from radioactive sources have been developed at Malaysian Nuclear Agency. Effort is made to ensure a good reliability of the system for nuclear counting, especially neutrons particles and gamma rays. It will be used in laboratory for testing and maintenance of nuclear spectrometry instruments. Personal computer is used to control the operation of equipment and data acquisition from counter/timer module. Control and data communication between PC and the Counter/ Timer is made through the USB' to RS 232 converter terminal. The program for this system was written using Labview 8.6 software on Windows XP environment. This system has been successfully tested using a pulse generator to simulate the detector signal for calibration and then followed by actual measurement using HE-3 detector.

    String theory is currently considered as the leading candidate for a unified theory of physics combining the Standard Model of forces and particles with gravity which is best described by Einstein theory of General Relativity. Contrary to classical model of point particle, String theory proposes that matter, force, even space and time are composed of tiny vibrating strings. This paper is to elaborate on the correspondence between string states and quantum fields by initially constructing general time-dependent states from string basis states analogous to general timedependent super-positions of basis states for a point particle. From this derivation we can show that an equation emerges from the 'classical' Schrodinger equation that represents the Schrodinger equation in String theory. This is very interesting to investigate since the Schrodinger equation is at the core of Quantum Mechanics which is the foundation of Standard Model that is the pillar of Nuclear physics.

    The indoor and outdoor radon/thoron progenies concentrations and natural background radiation levels throughout Sarawak and Sabah were measured. The measurements were carried out at 234 locations in 40 towns in Sarawak and Sabah. The mean indoor and outdoor radon equilibrium equivalent concentrations (EEC) in Sarawak were found to be 1.2 Bqm-3 and 1.5 Bqm-3 respectively. In Sabah, the mean indoor and outdoor radon equilibrium equivalent concentrations were 1.7 Bqm-3. The mean indoor and outdoor thoron equilibrium equivalent concentrations of 0.4 Bqm-3 and 0.3Bqm-3 respectively, were the same for Sarawak and Sabah. The mean indoor and outdoor radiation levels of 46 nGyh-1 and 42 nGyh-1 in Sarawak were slightly lower than the respective values in Sabah, i.e. 53 nGyh-1 and 46 nGy h-1.

    Nuclear technology has found a great need for use in medicine, industry, and research. Smoke
    detectors in our homes, medical treatments and new varieties of plants by irradiating its seeds are just a few examples of the benefits of nuclear technology. Portable neutron source such as Californium-252, available at Industrial Technology Division (BTI/PAT), Malaysian Nuclear Agency, has a 2.645 year half-life. However, 252 Cf is known to emit gamma radiation from the source. Thus, this chamber aims to provide a proper gamma shielding for samples to distinguish the use of mixed neutron with gamma-rays or pure neutron radiation. The chamber is compatible to be used with other portable neutron sources such as 241 Am-Be as well as the reactor TRIGA PUSPATI for higher neutron dose. This chamber was designed through a collaborative effort of Kulliyyah Engineering, IIUM with the Bahagian Teknologi Industri (BTI) team, Agency Nuklear Malaysia.
