Context: Diphenyltin(IV) diallyldithiocarbamate compound (Compound 1) and triphenyltin(IV) diallyldithiocarbamate compound (Compound 2) are two newly synthesised compounds of organotin(IV) with diallyldithiocarbamate ligands.

Objective: To assess the cytotoxic effects of two synthesised compounds against HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells and human CCD-18Co normal colon cells.

Materials and methods: Two successfully synthesised compounds were characterised using elemental (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulphur) analysis, Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), and 1H, 13C 119Sn Nucleus Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. The single-crystal structure of both compounds was determined by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The cytotoxicity of the compounds was assessed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazholium bromide (MTT) assay upon 24 h of treatment. While the mode of cell death was determined based on the externalisation of phosphatidylserine using a flow cytometer.

Results: The elemental analysis data of the two compounds showed an agreement with the suggested formula of (C6H5)2Sn[S2CN(C3H5)2]2 for Compound 1 and (C6H5)3Sn[S2CN(C3H5)2] for Compound 2. The two major peaks of infrared absorbance, i.e., ν(C = N) and ν(C = S) were detected at the range of 1475-1479 cm-1 and 972-977 cm-1, respectively. The chemical shift of carbon in NCS2 group for Compound 1 and 2 were found at 200.82 and 197.79 ppm. The crystal structure of Compound 1 showed that it is six coordinated and crystallised in monoclinic, P21/c space group. While the crystal structure of Compound 2 is five coordinated and crystallised in monoclinic, P21/c space group. The cytotoxicity (IC50) of the two compounds against HT-29 cell were 2.36 μM and 0.39 μM. Meanwhile, the percentage of cell death modes between 60% and 75% for compound 1 and compound 2 were mainly due to apoptosis, suggesting that both compounds induced growth arrest.

Conclusion: Our study concluded that the synthesised compounds showed potent cytotoxicity towards HT-29 cell, with the triphenyltin(IV) compound showing the highest effect compared to diphenyltin(IV).

Corrosion caused by sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from seawater nearby to Pasir Gudang has been studied. The test coupon was a AISI 304 stainless steel. Potential and corrosion rate measurements were carried out in various types of culturing solutions, with SRB1, SRB2, combination of SRB1 & SRB2 and without SRBs inoculated (sterilized). From Tafel plots a higher corrosion rate has been found in medium inoculated with SRBs than that of the sterilized medium (control). When SRBs were present in the medium, the Tafel plot shifted towards more negative values (Ecorr was shifted to much less anodic values) and increase in current density compared to that of the sterilized medium (control). Localized corrosion was observed on the metal surface, and it was associated to the SRB activity. X-ray analysis (EDAX) showed that the corrosion product has higher content of sulphur for medium containing SRBs than that of the sterilized medium. X-Ray Diffraction analysis carried out on corrosion products which showed the presence of iron sulphide. This indicates the influence of the presence of SRB in corrosion process.

The values of beam quality correction factor kQ that were experimentally determined from year 2002 to 2008 were analysed. As kQ is the function of ionization chamber and beam quality, the analysis were based on three cases namely (a) kQ(NE2571, 6 MV x-rays) that were determined from 17 measurements in the duration of 69 months at 6 radiotherapy centres, (b) kQ(NE2571, 10 MV x-rays) from 7 measurements in the duration of 12 months at one radiotherapy centre, and (c) kQ(NE2581, 6 MV x-rays) from 5 measurements in the duration of 5 months also at one radiotherapy centre. The purpose is to examine, in each case, the variation kQ for all the measurements. In other words, to see variation kQ with time. Results obtained are 0.993(NE2571, 6 MV), 0.986(NE2571, 10 MV) and 0.986(NE2581, 6 MV). This shows that in each case, despite the difference in the experimental data in getting kQ for all measurement, kQ remains constant with time. Reasons for this are explained.

High quality indium oxide and iron doped indium oxide nanocrystalline films were prepared by the sol-gel method followed by a spin coating technique. The samples were characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, an atomic force microscopy and a UV-vis spectroscopy. All samples had good crystallinity with a preferred orientation in the (222) direction. The crystallite size increased from 12.1 nm for the pure sample to 16.1 nm for the sample with x=0.35 and then decreased to 12.1 nm for the sample with x=0.45. All samples contained nanometer grain sizes with a smooth surface. All films showed a high transmission of over 91% in the wavelength range of 200-800 nm.

The effect of corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel in water based medium containing lignin was investigated via weight loss method. The evolution of surface morphology has been carried out for 7 to 42 days via optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS). Immersion of metal specimen without lignin shows that significant increase in the surface roughness. The longer the immersion time, the more the oxide crust formed. The surface degradation of metal specimen was well protected by immersion in lignin solution. A protective layer containing of lignin was formed on the surface of metal specimens after 7 and 21 days immersion. The corrosion inhibition gives about 13 and 53% inhibition for both 7 and 21 days immersion, respectively. The protective layers were spalling and separated from the metal surface after 42 days immersion in lignin solution possibly due to the increase in corrosion attack after long time immersion according to the increase in dissolved oxygen and may also due to the thermal mismatch between oxide and substrate. The adsorption of protective layer containing lignin was temporary adsorbed on the surface.

A single wall single image x-ray radiographic technique was adopted to investigate thickness variation of steel specimens caused by uniform corrosion. The ability of the 100 kV-160 kV x-rays to produce a meaningful film density for steel was also investigated. The thickness contour maps of corroded steel plates were found matching with the x-ray film density contour maps of the plates. The results confirm that x-ray radiography can be used to detect the thickness reduction of steel caused by uniform corrosion.

Tin selenide (SnSe) and copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2) compounds were synthesized by high temperature reaction method using combination of sealed ampoule (at relatively low pressure ~10-1 Pa without inert gas) and heating at specific temperature profile in rocking furnace. Powder X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that the products involved only single phases of SnSe and of CuInSe2 only. Using the reaction products as source materials, the SnSe and CuInSe2 thin films were vacuum-deposited on glass substrates at room temperature. Structural, elemental, surface morphological and optical properties of the as-deposited films were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. Single phase of SnSe and CuInSe2 films were obtained by thermal evaporation technique from synthesized SnSe and CuInSe2 compound without further treatment.

Combination of magnetic and biocompatible materials to form core-shell nanomaterials has been widely used in medical fields. These core-shell magnetic biomaterials have a great potential for magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) treatment to remedy cancer. The aims of this study were to investigate the production of core-shell cobalt ferrite/polycaprolactone (CoFe2O4/PCL) nanomaterials with different ratios of cobalt ferrite to caprolactone, to study the effects of using polymer in reducing the agglomerations between particles and to determine the structure, morphology, thermal and magnetic properties of these core-shell nanomaterials. The core-shell nanomaterials were produced by in situ polymerization method. The formation of the CoFe2O4/PCL was investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffractometer (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Its thermal properties were determined by using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) was used to reveal the magnetic properties. The results for the XRD and FTIR spectra demonstrated the formation of cobalt ferrite and polycaprolactone in core-shell nanomaterials. From the TEM results, it was seen that the core-shell CoFe2O4/PCL nanomaterials were best formed at a ratio of CoFe2O4 to monomer caprolactone mixtures of 1:4.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized via low-temperature sucrose ester micelle-mediated hydrothermal processing route using titanium isopropoxide as the precursor. X-ray diffractometer revealed that the samples possessed a mixed crystalline phases consisting of anatase and brookite in which anatase was the main phase. Upon increasing the hydrothermal reaction temperature, the degree of crystallinity of the nanoparticles improved and their morphology transformed from bundles of needles to rods and to spheres. Photocatalytic behaviour of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was investigated by photodegradation of methylene blue solution in an ultraviolet A irradiating photoreactor. The as-synthesized nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic performance as compared to the commercial counterpart.

In this study TiO2 films have been prepared using two different techniques i.e. sol-gel and electron gun evaporation (e-gun) techniques. The films were annealed at 300, 350 and 400oC in air. The microstructure study using field emission scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffractometer showed nanometer grains size and only the film prepared by sol-gel and annealed at 400oC has anatase phase while others are amorphous. To study the effect of the films (as buffer layer) onto the dielectric bolometer Ba0.6Sr 0.4TiO3 as distance sensor, sensors with the configuration of Al/BST/TiO2/RuO2/SiO2/Si were built. Two different measurements i.e. with and without infrared source were carried out to measure the sensitivity and repeatability of the sensors. The sensors which contained sol-gel TiO2 films gave reading for both type of measurements, indicating that the sensor can act as active and passive sensors. However, the sensors which contained e-gun TiO2 films only gave responses when the IR source was used, indicating that they can only act as passive sensors. The most sensitive sensor was TiO2 film prepared by sol gel and annealed at 350oC. In general sensors which contained TiO2 films prepared by sol gel showed good repeatability.

CaxZn(1_x)Al204thin films (x = 0.00; 0 .05 ; 0.10; 0.15 and 0.20) were prepared by sol-gel method with the substitution of Zn2+ by Ca" in the framework of ZnAl204. The effect of Ca addition on the structure and morphology of CaZnAl204thin films was investigated by x-ray diffraction (xRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDx), ultra-violet visible (uv-Vis) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The xRD patterns showed the characteristic peaks of face-centred cubic (fcc)ZnAl204and CaZnAl204. The addition of Ca increased the crystallite size from 8.9 to 302 nm. The bandgap of CaxZnuld204 thin film was found in the range of 3.40 to 3.84 eV. sEm micrograph shows the morphology of all thin films is sphere-like, with the grain size increased from 33 to 123 nm. The AFM images show the roughness of surface morphology increased. The substitution of Zn2+ by Ca" increased the crystallite size, grain size and surface roughness which evidently increased the density (4.59 to 4.64 glcm3) and dielectric constant (8.48 to 9.54). The composition of CaxZn(1_x)Al204is considered as suitable material for GPS patch antennas.

The physical properties and structural stability of the Quad Flat No-Leads (QFN) package with different gamma radiation doses have been investigated. The packages were irradiated with Co-60 gamma radiation with varying doses of 5 Gy, 50 Gy, 500 Gy, 5 kGy and 50 kGy with operating dose of 2.54 kGylh at room temperature. The infinite focus microscope (IFM) was used to measure the dimensional change and slantinglwarpage behaviour, while the 3D CT Scan X-ray machine was used to determine the occurrence of deflection on a wire in package due to exposure. It is believed that radiation effect on ceramic filler in the epoxy mold compound (EMC) plays an important role to induce the defects and resulted in swelling of the package. The slantinglwarpage behaviour is believed to be caused by the swelling behaviour of ceramic filler and further induced structural stability. The induced stress on the EMC structural after the dimensional change and slantinglwarpage failure leads to the occurrence of wire sweep. The finding suggests that defect production in swelled ceramic filler leads to the occurrence of dimensional and structure instability.

Biological fermentation of Rhizopus oryzae was introduced to extract cellulose nanofibre from durian skin fibre (DSF).
The diameter of the extracted durian skin nanofibre (DSNF) was in the range of 49-81 nm. The changes of chemical
composition of DSNF were clearly seen after evaluated via TAPPI standard test methods. Verification via Fourier transform
infrared (FTIR) confirmed the deduction of hemicelluloses and lignin in DSNF in the range of 1200 to 1000 cm-1. X-ray
diffraction (XRD) demonstrated increment in the crystallinity from 58.3 to 72.2% after biological fermentation. DSNF was
then incorporated into polylactic acid (PLA) via extrusion and injection moulding processes. The effect of 1-5 wt. % DSNF
content on PLA biocomposites was investigated for its mechanical and thermal properties. The presence of only 1 wt. %
improved the tensile and impact strength by 14.1 MPa and 33.1 kJ/m2
, respectively. The thermal properties of PLA-1DSNF
biocomposite also recorded higher thermal stability, glass transition temperature (Tg
    ), crystallization temperature (Tc
    )
and melting temperature (Tm). Additionally, from the DMA, it was determined that PLA-1DSNF possessed lower storage
modulus and loss modulus, as well as low energy dissipation.

Surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was carried out using a gas phase treatment in a Universal Temperature Program (UTP) reactor by flowing SO3 gas onto the CNTs while being heated at different temperatures. The functionalized nanotubes were characterized using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy. The amount of oxyen and sulfur containing groups was determined by acid-base titration. The titration results were in good agreement with elemental analysis using x-ray fluorescence. FTIRanalysis showed the presence of oxygen and sulfur containing groups, S=O, C-S, C=O and -COOH. Raman spectroscopy confirmed that oxygen and sulfur containing acidic groups covalently attached to the sidewall of the MWCNTs.

The effects of the X-ray irradiation and chemical etching on the physical and optical properties of cR-39 plastic detectors were investigated for different doses of X-ray. cR-39 detectors were etched in the solution of the 3 M of NaOH after irradiation for revelations of the track. The tracks formed on cR-39 either by irradiated X-ray or due to the effect of environment. The changes in the thickness after exposed have significant decrease in 60 kVp and started to increase in the range of 70 kVp up to 100 kVp due to the formation of oxidation layer on surface by free radicals. The optical band gaps before etching and after etching were determined by using Ultraviolet-visible (uv-Vis) spectroscopy. The optical band gap is attributed to the indirect transition due to its amorphous nature which is significantly decline trend energy in increase of the energy fluence of radiation. The Urbach's energy, is defined as the width of the tail localized states in the forbidden band gap which change increment trend as increase in dose delivered due to the distortion structure of the cR-39 in terms of the electron charges in valences electron hence attributes to the induced modification of angle bond between the neighboring atoms.

Molluscan shells are attracting research interest due to the diverse application properties possessed. As shells are very similar to bones, this study was conducted to analyze the mineral and physiochemical composition of Cockle (Anadara granosa) shell and three other types of molluscan shell, namely Strombus canarium, Oliva sayana and Terebra dislocata as potential biomaterial for bone tissue engineering applications. Approximately 200 g of shells from each species were processed and powdered for the purpose of this study. Carbon was analyzed using the carbon analyzer while minerals and heavy metals through ICP-MS. The phase purity and crystallographic structures of the powders were identified using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) while the chemical functionality was determined using the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer. The analysis showed that Cockle shells contained higher content of calcium and carbon including varying amount of other minor elements comparatively. However, all four types of shell powders were found to contain below detectable levels of toxic elements. Physiochemical analysis on phase purity and crystallographic structures showed similar characteristics of carbonate group present in all four shell types. A predominantly aragonite form of calcium carbonate was detected in both XRD diffractogram and FTIR spectra for all samples. Our findings demonstrated that different types of molluscan shells have almost similar mineral and physiochemical characteristics and a predominantly aragonite form of calcium carbonate that provides a strong basis for their use as a potential bone tissues engineering material.

In this study, the adsorption efficiency of methyl violet (MV) dye onto Ce0.3Al0.7 and Ce0.3Al0.7Agx (x = 0.1, 0.3 & 0.5) mixed oxides was investigated. The properties of mixed oxide were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). Characterization showed that synthesized mixed oxide with fluorite has a pure cubic structure of a mesoporous nature and a small grain size with rough surface. Batch adsorption experiments were used to study parameters including contact time and initial dye concentration. The results showed that these parameters affected the degree of MV dye adsorption. The dye adsorption of mixed oxides attained equilibrium at 120 min. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The adsorption behavior of MV dye onto Ce0.3Al0.7 was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9951), providing a maximum monolayer adsorptive capacity of 2.35 mg/g. Alternatively, the adsorption of MV dye onto Ce0.3Al0.7Ag0.1 (R2 = 0.7839), Ce0.3Al0.7Ag0.3 (R2 = 0.9301) and Ce0.3Al0.7Ag0.5 (R2 = 0.9396) followed the Freundlich isotherm. The possible adsorption mechanisms of MV dyes onto the Ce0.3Al0.7 and Ce0.3Al0.7Agx were also discussed.

Anticorrosive properties of nano silicate from paddy husk in salt medium was investigated via weight loss method, Tafel
polarization and impedance techniques. Prior to the corrosion test, the silica powder was obtained from burning the
rice husk and extended with a chemical treatment process. The size of silica powder was characterized via zeta sizer and
showed the amount of micro silica particle appear more than the nano size particle. Nano silica powder was produced
from the refluxing process of micro silica to enhance the good properties of silica particle. The corrosion inhibition
efficiency of nano silicate showed good inhibition with increased in inhibitor concentrations. Weight loss test exhibits
high inhibition as more than 80% even, immersed in the corrosive medium until 14 days. The nano silicate inhibitor
affected the anodic reaction as showed by Tafel plot analysis. Impedance results also correlated with other test as shown
by the large size of Nyquist semicircle which represents as high resistance of charge transfer. The surface morphology
of inhibited specimen showed a smooth surface after nano silicate inhibitor applied in the NaCl medium as observed
through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol is an attractive way to recycle and utilize CO2. A series of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3/ZrO2 catalysts (CZAZ) containing different molar ratios of Cu/Zn were prepared by the co-precipitation method. The catalysts were characterized by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray analysis (FESEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Higher surface area, SABET values (42.6-59.9 m2/g) were recorded at low (1) and high (5) Cu/Zn ratios with the minimum value of 35.71 m2/g was found for a Cu/Zn of 3. The reducibility of the metal oxides formed after calcination of catalyst samples was also affected due to change in metal-support interaction. At a reaction temperature of 443 K, total gas pressure of 3.0 MPa and 0.1 g/mL of the CZAZ catalyst, the selectivity to methanol decreased as the Cu/Zn molar ratio increased, and the maximum selectivity of 93.9 was achieved at Cu/Zn molar ratio of 0.33. With a reaction time of 3h, the best performing catalyst was CZAZ75 with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 5 giving methanol yield of 6.4%.
