    This study analyses the sampling performance of three benthic sampling tools
    commonly used to collect freshwater macroinvertebrates. Efficiency of qualitative D-frame
    and square aquatic nets were compared to a quantitative Surber sampler in tropical
    Malaysian streams. The abundance and diversity of macroinvertebrates collected using
    each tool evaluated along with their relative variations (RVs). Each tool was used to
    sample macroinvertebrates from three streams draining different areas: a vegetable farm,
    a tea plantation and a forest reserve. High macroinvertebrate diversities were recorded using the square net and Surber sampler at the forested stream site; however, very low
    species abundance was recorded by the Surber sampler. Relatively large variations in the
    Surber sampler collections (RVs of 36% and 28%) were observed for the vegetable farm
    and tea plantation streams, respectively. Of the three sampling methods, the square net
    was the most efficient, collecting a greater diversity of macroinvertebrate taxa and a

    The objective of this study is to investigate the demand for quality vegetables in Malaysia. This study estimates quality elasticities from the difference between expenditure and quantity elasticities in order to show the demand for quality vegetables in Malaysia. By using the Household Expenditure Survey 2004/2005, expenditure and quantity Engel equations are estimated via two stage least square. The positive estimated quality elasticities (except root and tuberous vegetable) show that Malaysian consumers tend to increase their demand for quality vegetables in response to their incomes rise. To be more specific, urban consumers are expected to demand more of higher quality vegetables (except root and tuberous vegetable) than rural consumers.

    Ultraviolet (UV) light especially UV-C has been used to sterilize fruits and vegetables. However, overdose of UV-C irradiation could cause brownish-red colouration to products such as banana fruit. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: (1) examine the effect of UV-C irradiation at different doses on the surface colour of Berangan banana fruit during ripening; (2) determine polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity after irradiated with different doses of UV-C, and (3) examine the effectiveness of three browning assessment methods (subjective score, browning index derived from Lab colour space and optical density of 420 nm) in response to PPO activity of UV-C irradiated Berangan banana fruit. Mature green Berangan banana fruit were irradiated with 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 kJ/m2 UV-C. After irradiation, the fruit were initiated to ripening using 1 mL/L ethylene for 24 h. Then, the fruit were allowed to ripen in 27oC and fruit of day 0, 1, 3 and 5 were sampled for peel colour (L*, a*, b*, C* and ho), browning assessment (three methods) and PPO assay. The peel colour, browning assessment using subjective score and optical density, and PPO activity of Berangan banana fruit were affected significantly (P ≤ 0.05) by interaction of radiation dose x ripening day. The values of L*, b*, C* and ho decrease while a* values increase as fruit irradiated with 0.03 and 0.04 kJ/m2 UV-C indicating brownish-red has occurred. Fruit irradiated with 0.04 kJ/m2 UV-C discoloured by ripening day 3 while those irradiated with 0.03 kJ/m2 discolored by day 5. Similar result was obtained when fruit assessed for its browning using subjective score and optical density. A contrary result was obtained in PPO activity where UV-C irradiation has inhibited Berangan banana fruit PPO activity by ripening day 5. Correlation analysis showed that browning index that derived from colour space is highly related to PPO activity with coefficients of 0.93. As conclusion, the lethal dose causing browning for Berangan banana fruit is 0.03 kJ/m2 and browning index that derived from colour space is most effective to correlate browning with PPO activity.

    Jiangxi red soil was used as the tested soil and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic) and Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) were used as the tested vegetables in this study to investigate the effects of different amounts of sewage-sludge application on the growth of vegetables and the migration and enrichment patterns of Cu and Zn in vegetables using the potted method. The results indicated that the application of sewage sludge could improve the properties of red soil and promote vegetable growth. The dry weight of water spinach and Chinese chive reached the maximal levels when treated with the amount of sewage sludge at 4% and 10%, which was 4.38 ± 0.82 g and 1.56 ± 0.31 g, respectively. The dry weights after the application of sewage sludge were all larger than control treatment (CK) without sludge application. With increases in the applied amount of sewage sludge, the concentrations of Cu and Zu in red soil continued to increase, and the peak value was not reached. After the two vegetables were planted, the concentrations of Cu and Zn in red soil decreased by different degrees. The degrees of decrease of Zn were generally higher than those of Cu. The enrichment coefficient of water spinach on Cu showed a trend of increase followed by a decrease and reached the peak value of 1.04 ± 0.38 when the applied amount was 4%. The enrichment coefficient of Chinese chive on Cu overall showed a decreasing trend and did not reach the peak value under the treatment levels used in this experiment.     The aim of this study was to assess the most probable number-polymerase chain reaction (MPNPCR) technique for detection of Listeria monocytogenes in salad vegetables in comparison with reference EN ISO 11290-2 and Food Drug Administration Bacteriological Analytical Manual method using artificial and naturally contaminated samples. Based on recovery of L. monocytogenes from artificially contaminated samples, MPN-PCR showed a moderate correlation (R=0.67) between spiking concentration and microbial levels which was better than the FDA-BAM method (R=0.642) and ISO 11290-2:1998 method (R=0.655). With naturally contaminated samples, it was found that L. monocytogenes was detected in 25% of the vegetable samples using MPN-PCR; 15% of the samples by the FDA-BAM method and 8% of samples using ISO 11290-2:1998 method. Overall, MPN-PCR was found to be a rapid and reliable method that could facilitate the enumeration of L. monocytogenes in vegetables.

    This study is carried out to determine the physical properties of green pepper berries and to
    improve the existing retting technique in white pepper production using the Viscozyme and
    Celluclast as the enzymes. Effects of blanched and non-blanched pepper berries, acidic solution
    and non-acidic solution, and different temperature of 28, 35, 42, and 49°C are determined to
    obtain the optimum conditions for enzymatic retting. The physical properties of green pepper
    berries such as dimension (5.21 mm), weight (0.11 g per berry), true density (1319.33 kg/m3),
    bulk density (596.9 kg/m3), sphericity (0.976), angle of repose (6.87°) and flow ability with
    funnel flow time of 5.27 seconds were determined. The enzymatic retting in 42oC can fully
    soften the pericarp of pepper berries from 15 days to 7 days. The enzymatic decortication has
    the efficiency in acidic solution (pH 4) and temperature of 42°C with non-blanched pepper
    berries. The enzymatic retting reached constant fracture force (20.98N) at the ninth soaking
    days while the non-enzymatic retting reached constant fracture force (21.89N) at the fifteenth
    soaking days.

    This study involves the adoption of the Geographic Information System (GIS) modeling approach to determine the quickest routes for fresh vegetable delivery. During transport, fresh vegetables mainly deteriorate on account of temperature and delivery time. Nonetheless, little attention has been directed to transportation issues in most areas within Kuala Lumpur. In addition, perishable food normally has a short shelf life, thus timely delivery significantly affects delivery costs. Therefore, selecting efficient routes would consequently reduce the total transportation costs. The regression model is applied in this study to determine the parameters that affect route selection with respect to the fastest delivery of fresh vegetables. For the purpose of this research, ArcGIS software with network analyst extension is adopted to solve the problem of complex networks. The final output of this research is a map of quickest routes with the best delivery times based on all variables. The variables tested from regression analysis are the most effective parameters to make the flow of road networks slower. The objective is to improve the delivery services by achieving the least drive time. The main findings of this research are that Land use such as residential area and population as variables are the effective parameters on drive time.

Over time, consumers are concern towards health effect of consuming those produce treated with chemicals. Ozone is one of the approach that provide both of the needs to deal with pathogenic microbes and also give no harmful residue throughout the process. Several reports had proven that ozone can almost kill or inhibit all pathogenic microbes on treated commodity which promote higher quality and postharvest life during storage. This review focus and summarise the use of ozone in the form of aqueous and gaseous towards fresh produces, its benefits and also the precaution during ozone application.

    Cruciferous vegetables belong to the mustard family of plants such as Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. They are well known for their cancer prevention properties which are due to high content of bioactive compounds, isothiocyanates (ITCs). This study was aimed to investigate nitrosation inhibition ability of the cruciferous vegetables commonly consumed with meat products namely, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Aqueous extracts of fresh and steamed (2 and 4 min) vegetables were subjected to determination of antioxidant capacity (DPPH and FRAP assay) and chemical composition i.e. total phenolic and isothiocyanate (ITC) content. It was found that TPC, DPPH and FRAP values of raw vegetables were different in each vegetable and ranged from 17.12-38.91 mg GAE/100 ml, 44.09-63.31% and 1.36-6.81 mg TE/100 ml, respectively. Among three types of cruciferous vegetable, broccoli had the highest PEITC content being 0.21 mmol/100 g compared to cauliflower (0.15 mmol/100 g) and cabbage (0.06 mmol/100 g).     Mayonnaise and salad dressing are fast becoming popular condiments for Malaysian. The aim of this study was to
    obtain the nutritional composition of mayonnaise and salad dressing commercially available in the Malaysian market.
    The data will be used to update the Malaysian Food Composition Database which was last updated in 1997. A total of
    six brands from each type of mayonnaise and salad dressing were sampled from local supermarkets in the Klang Valley
    and analysed using standard methods. The validity of test data was monitored with the application of internal quality
    controls in line with the requirements of ISO 17025. The energy contents of mayonnaise and salad dressings were up to
    626.40 kcal/100 g. Our findings were also in agreement with the energy labelling on the packaging. Sodium was high in
    mayonnaise and salad dressing because it is used in the final mixture of both condiments to improve their characteristics
    for certain reasons. Mayonnaise and salad dressing have been identified as potent sources of vitamin A and vitamin
    E and both condiments were found to contain high levels of these antioxidants. It can be concluded that this study are
    useful not only in providing information on the nutritional content of several commercial types of mayonnaise and salad
    dressing, but also in improving the public understanding of healthy food choices.

    The steady-state flow test was conducted on pink-fleshed guava, pink-fleshed pomelo and soursop juice concentrates using a rheometer to understand its rheological behaviour. The power law model was used and a master-curve was created using the shear rate-temperature-concentration superposition technique to predict rheological properties from a wide range of temperatures and concentrations. All three juice concentrates undergo a double horizontal shift whilst the pink-fleshed guava required an additional vertical shift. The final equations show shear-thinning behaviour of pink-fleshed guava, pink-fleshed pomelo and soursop with flow behaviour index of 0.2217, 0.7507 and 0.6347, respectively. The final master-curve predicts shear stress at wide range of shear rates, i.e. between 10-2 and 106 s-1 for the pink-fleshed guava, 100 and 106 s-1 for the pink-fleshed pomelo and 100 and 107 s-1 for the soursop. The results provide useful information and effective technique to predict fruit juice concentrates behaviour affected by heat changes during processing.

    Beans are distinctive among a diverse and broad class of legumes. Certain health products claimed their products are high in dietary fibers and total phenolic content (TPC) because they applied bean combinations. This study aimed to determine the dietary fibers and TPC of raw and cooked beans and its combinations. Individual beans studied were kidney bean, mung bean and chickpea. Bean combinations were done by mixing each of the homogenized beans flour in the ratio of 1:1 (w/w) and 1:1:1 (w/w/w). Dietary fibers were determined using enzymaticgravimetrical method whereas TPC was determined spectrophotometrically. Results showed the insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), soluble dietary fiber (SDF), total dietary fiber (TDF) and TPC for individual raw beans varied from 20.52 to 26.61 g/100 g, 1.20 to 2.45 g/100 g, 22.08 to 27.81 g/100 g and 0.48 to 1.04 mg GAE/g, respectively. For raw bean combinations, the IDF, SDF, TDF and TPC varied from 20.74 to 23.96 g/100 g, 2.3 to 2.50 g/100 g, 23.05 to 26.46 g/100 g and 0.80 to 0.85 mg GAE/g, respectively. No significant different (p > 0.05) in IDF and SDF for raw bean combinations and individual raw beans. Meanwhile, certain raw bean combinations contained significant higher (p < 0.05) TDF and TPC than individual raw beans. The IDF, SDF, TDF and TPC for individual cooked beans varied from 14.49 to 26.30 g/100 g, 1.40 to 2.02 g/100 g, 15.88 to 28.31 g/100 g and 0.57 to 1.20 mg GAE/g, respectively. For cooked bean combinations, the IDF, SDF, TDF and TPC varied from 15.73 to 23.03 g/100 g, 1.73 to 2.36 g/100 g, 17.46 to 24.95 g/100 g and 0.61 to 1.08 mg GAE/g, respectively. After cooking, the IDF, SDF, TDF and TPC of certain beans combinations were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than individual beans. This study supports the proposal that bean combinations can possibly be used as a method to increase the amount of dietary fibers and TPC.

    Flood is among the natural disasters that commonly happened in Malaysia every year. During the flood, victims faced clean water shortages and deterioration of the environment resulting in long waiting times for aid to access. Hence, affordable and efficient filters are needed to supply clean water in the affected areas. Application of xylem tissue inside plant stem has the potential as a filter for water filtration. This research focuses on xylem tissue in Malaysian tropical plants from cassava stem. Cassava stems were prepared in a small-scale set-up as the xylem was used as a filter. Effects of cross-sectional area and hydrostatic pressure were analyzed and the results showed a directly proportional relationship with permeate flow rate. Upon filtration with red dye solution, total dye removal was achieved using a xylem with a minimal length of 3 cm and onwards. While for bacteria removal, E. coli bacteria have been removed when tested with a bacteria count plate. Thus, this study demonstrated the potential of the xylem tissue of the cassava plant as affordable and available natural raw materials to be used as water filters during an emergency.

    Food loss or waste is a far-reaching problem and has indeed become a worrying issue that is growing at an alarming rate. Fruits and vegetables are lost or wasted at the highest rate among the composition of food waste. Furthermore, the world is progressing toward sustainable development; hence, an efficient approach to valorise fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) is necessary. A simple phenotypic characterisation of microbiota isolated from the fermented FVW was conducted, and its effectiveness toward wastewater treatment was investigated. Presumptive identification suggested that yeast is dominant in this study, accounting for 85% of total isolates. At the genus level, the enriched medium's microbial community consists of Saccharomyces, Bacillus and Candida. Ammonium in the wastewater can enhance certain bacteria to grow, such as lactic acid bacteria, resulting in decreased NH4+ concentration at the end of the treatment to 0.5 mg/L. In addition, the fermented biowaste could reduce PO43- by 90% after the duration of treatment. Overall, FVW is a valuable microbial resource, and the microbial population enables a reduction in organic matter such as NH4+ and PO43-. This study helps explore the function and improve the effectiveness of utilising biowaste by understanding the microorganisms responsible for producing eco-enzyme.

    Error in self-reported food and beverage intake affects the accuracy of dietary intake data. Systematically synthesizing available data on contributors to error within and between food groups has not been conducted but may help inform error mitigation strategies. In this review we aimed to systematically identify, quantify, and compare contributors to error in estimated intake of foods and beverages, based on short-term self-report dietary assessment instruments, such as 24-h dietary recalls and dietary records. Seven research databases were searched for studies including self-reported dietary assessment and a comparator measure of observed intake (e.g., direct observation or controlled feeding studies) in healthy adults up until December 2021. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data from included studies, recording quantitative data on omissions, intrusions, misclassifications, and/or portion misestimations. Risk of bias was assessed using the QualSyst tool. A narrative synthesis focused on patterns of error within and between food groups. Of 2328 articles identified, 29 met inclusion criteria and were included, corresponding to 2964 participants across 15 countries. Most frequently reported contributors to error were omissions and portion size misestimations of food/beverage items. Although few consistent patterns were seen in omission of consumed items, beverages were omitted less frequently (0-32% of the time), whereas vegetables (2-85%) and condiments (1-80%) were omitted more frequently than other items. Both under- and overestimation of portion size was seen for most single food/beverage items within study samples and most food groups. Studies considered and reported error in different ways, impeding the interpretation of how error contributors interact to impact overall misestimation. We recommend that future studies report 1) all error contributors for each food/beverage item evaluated (i.e., omission, intrusion, misclassification, and portion misestimation), and 2) measures of variation of the error.     Innovative solutions are needed to limit environmental effect and optimise resource use as food waste generation rises worldwide. This study investigates the potential of upcycling food waste from fresh markets using Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae (BSFL) as a sustainable approach. This study explored four fresh market food waste substrates for BSFL bioconversion: discarded fish waste (FI), slaughtered chicken waste (CHI), vegetable waste (VEG), and a 1:1:1 combination of all three (MIX). Soybean curd residue (SCR) was treated as the control substrate. The effects on larval growth, nutritional content, and waste bioconversion rates were examined. The larvae growth rate was strongly impacted by waste type, with BSF-fed CHI and MIX gaining 18.0 and 16.7 mg/d, respectively, followed by BSF-fed with SCR (12.2 mg/d), FI (8.9 mg/d) and VEG (7.6 mg/d). The waste type did not substantially alter BSFL length. The survival rate of the BSFL fed with the food waste studied ranges from 95 to 98.47%, with SCR being the highest. Our findings indicated that BSFL can effectively convert a variety of fresh market food waste into valuable biomass. CHI waste produced the highest larval biomass and bioconversion rate followed by MIX, SCR, FI and VEG. The different waste stream has a major influence on BSFL biomass nutrition. BSFL nutritional composition is independent of the substrate's nutritional content, indicating no direct correlation between substrate and BSFL biomass nutritional composition. SCR waste produced the highest protein content of BSFL (50.49%), followed by VEG (32.61%), MIX (32.57%), FI (31.03%) and CHI (29.06%). SCR waste also produced BSFL biomass with lowest lipid content (26.55%) compared to other waste which resulted into BSFL with lipid levels ranging from 42.92% to 53.72%. BSFL-fed with SCR is the most suitable to be used as an alternative animal's feed based on the protein and lipid levels, while defatting procedure is necessary for the other waste-fed BSFL to render it suitability as animal feed alternatives. Based on bioconversion rate, BSFL growth, and lipid content, the MIX and CHI waste might be viable substrates for future research.

Other important roles of the skin include the regulation of several important physiological processes of the body, sensing stimuli, synthesis of vitamin D, and immune surveillance. However, aging, diseases and environmental conditions significantly change the skin's behavior and functioning. The treatment and prevention strategies for various skin diseases especially photoaging usually include topical treatment with medical cosmetology, active ingredients and other physical means of photoprotection. In recent times, however, there is an increasing consciousness about the role of diet and nutrition in skin health with certain dietary components emerging as an adequate alternative approach to alleviate and prevent both endogenous and exogenous aging symptoms. Therefore, this narrative review uniquely discusses the basic structure of the skin and also addresses common dermatological signs of damaged skin, the impacts of unhealthy diet habits on the skin, and the beneficial effects of some healthy diet habits on skin health. The information and data were collated from various literature databases and resources such as Science Direct, PubMed, Wiley, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Inflibnet, Scopus, Google, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). In conclusion, diet and nutrition play essential roles in the optimum functioning of the human body, including the skin. Thus, certain diet habits such as less water intake, high-fat diet, refined sugar, and certain food additives are unhealthy and harmful to the skin while alternative healthy diet habits such as adequate water intake; consumption of antioxidants and polyphenolic-rich fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes; a low glycemic index diet; probiotics; and phytoestrogens should be adopted to enhance skin health.

    There is an exponential increase in dementia in old age at a global level because of increasing life expectancy. The prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) will continue to rise steadily, and is expected to reach 42 million cases worldwide in 2020. Despite the advancement of medication, the management of these diseases remains largely ineffective. Therefore, it is vital to explore novel nature-based nutraceuticals to mitigate AD and other age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Mushrooms and their extracts appear to hold many health benefits, including immune-modulating effects. A number of edible mushrooms have been shown to contain rare and exotic compounds that exhibit positive effects on brain cells both in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we summarize the scientific information on edible and culinary mushrooms with regard to their antidementia/AD active compounds and/or pharmacological test results. The bioactive components in these mushrooms and the underlying mechanism of their activities are discussed. In short, these mushrooms may be regarded as functional foods for the mitigation of neurodegenerative diseases.
