    Many researchers have focused chitosan as a source of potential bioactive material during the past few decades. However, chitosan has several drawbacks to be utilised in biological applications, including poor solubility under physiological conditions. Therefore, a new interest has recently emerged on partially hydrolysed chitosan, chitosan oligosaccharides (COS). In this study, degradation of chitosan was performed by Cellulase from Trichoderma reesei® 1.5L and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) were employed to optimize the hydrolysis temperature, pH, enzyme concentration and substrate concentration. Optimization of cellulase T. reesei® using central composite design (CCD) was to obtain optimum parameters and all the factors showed significant effects (p˂0.05). The maximum response, Celluclast® activity (1.268 U) was obtained by assaying the process at 49.79oC, pH 4.5, 3% (v/w) of enzyme concentration and 25% (w/v) concentration of chitosan for 24 hours.

    Introduction: Goniothalamin (GTN) is a plant styryl-lactone that has been reported to possess anticancer properties. However, limited studies were conducted to explore the selectivity of GTN to human cancer cells in comparison with normal human cells counterpart. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and selectivity of GTN in human cancer cells lines of osteosarcoma cells (Saos-2), adenocarcinoma alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549), breast carcinoma cells (UACC-732), breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7), colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HT29). Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HMSC) served as a control normal cell. Methods: The an- tiproliferative activity of GTN was assessed by MTT assay for 24, 48 and 72 h of incubation time. Then, the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) and the selectivity index (S.I) were calculated to examine the potency and selectivity of GTN. Results: GTN has significantly exhibited concentration and time-dependent inhibitory effect to all tested cancer cells with the lowest IC50 values ranging from 0.62±0.06 to 2.01±0.28 µg/ml after 72 h. Besides, GTN was found to be better than doxorubicin, DOX (positive control) in term of its selectivity towards cancer cells as higher S.I values between 2.86±0.31 to 10.02±1.49 were determined for all the cancer cells. Conclusion: This study concludes that GTN fulfills the basic criteria as an effective therapeutic agent by possessing a very strong range of anticancer activity with less toxicity towards the normal cells. Thus, GTN could be considered as a promising alternative to present chemotherapeutic drug in cancer treatment.

    Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) are critical for the inflammatory response for endothelial dysfunction. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various doses of HDL on: (a) LDL susceptibility to oxidation; (b) expression of eNOS; and (c) expression of NF-κB p50 and p65. Different concentrations of HDL were incubated in LDL. The reaction rates of LDL susceptibility to oxidation were obtained by kinetic modeling analysis. For determination of eNOS, NF-κB p50 and p65 expression, different HDL concentrations were incubated in lipo polysacharides (LPS)-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cell line for 16 hours.     Objective: Previous studies have shown milk to contain cancer inhibitors. In this context, this study was conducted to screen the potential cytotoxic properties of four different types of milk, namely cow's milk, goat's milk, mare's milk and human milk.
    Methods: In evaluating the cytotoxic properties of milk, two different human leukemia cell lines namely, Raji and CEM-SS were used. The treated and untreated cells of milk were cultured at 37°C in 5% CO2 for 5 days according to standard guidelines.     Air-dried leaves of both Glycosmis citrifolia and Glycosmis elongata collected from Bogor Botanical Garden, Indonesia were individually extracted with chloroform to give dark viscous extracts after solvent removal. Column chromatographic separation of the extract of G. citrifolia yielded 5(6)-glutene-3α-ol, two sets conformers, (E)-dambullin and (Z)-dambullin, and (E)-methyldambullin and (Z)-methyldambullin. Similar treatment of the extract of G. elongata gave skimmianine and arborinine. The structures of the compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic data and comparison with published reports.

    Six varieties of Ficus deltoidea Jack (Moraceae) showed leaf morphological variations through quantitative measurement on different plant parts. There were significant differences among six varieties studied by plant parts. The varieties studied include var. deltoidea Corner, var. angustifolia (Miq.) Corner, var. trengganuensis Corner, var. bilobata Corner, var. intermedia Corner, and var. kunstleri (King) Corner. The upper, middle and lower plant parts showed morphological variations in terms of leaf length, leaf width, leaf area and petiole length. Qualitative parameters also showed trends in morphological variations in terms of leaf shape, leaf base, leaf apex and leaf attachment. However, some qualitative parameters were not the recommended parameters to differentiate among varieties. On the other hand, leaf heterophylly has occurred in F. deltoidea because foliage of the young plant was different from the mature plant. Leaf heterophylly was observed in leaf shape and leaf apex parameters, whereby leaves from the lower plant parts were different from the upper and middle parts. The heterophylly in leaf shape was detected in varieties angustifolia, bilobata, intermedia and trengganuensis, whilst six varieties of F. deltoidea showed leaf apex heterophylly
