    Tetrasticta gnatha sp. n., collected under the bark of a rotten fallen tree in Peninsular Malaysia, is described. A habitus photograph, line drawings of diagnostic characters, and a diagnosis are provided. The new species is readily distinguished from all known congeners by having long mandibles, and long, curved maxillary palpi.

    The organism designated the SF agent was originally isolated in Japan in 1962 from Stellantchasmus falcatus metacercaria parasitic on gray mullet fish. The SF agent resembles members of the genus Ehrlichia morphologically and exhibits weak antigenic cross-reactivity with Ehrlichia sennetsu. This organism causes mild clinical signs in dogs, but severe splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy in mice. This suggests that the SF agent may be similar to either Neorickettsia helminthoeca, an intracellular parasite of a fluke and the cause of salmon poisoning disease in dogs, or E. sennetsu, the causative agent of human sennetsu ehrlichiosis in Japan and Malaysia. In order to determine the phylogenetic relationship between the SF agent and other ehrlichial species, the 16S rRNA gene was amplified by the PCR and sequenced. The SF agent sequence was most closely related to the sequences of Ehrlichia risticii (level of sequence similarity, 99.1%), the causative agent of Potomac horse fever, and E. sennetsu (level of sequence similarity, 98.7%). The next most similar sequence was that of N. helminthoeca, but the level of sequence similarity was only 93.7%. E. sennetsu, E. risticii, the SF agent, and N. helminthoeca formed a distinct cluster that was separated from all other ehrlichial species. As determined by immunofluorescence labeling, antiserum against the SF agent cross-reacted strongly with E. sennetsu, E. risticii, and N. helminthoeca. When three genetically distinct ehrlichial isolates obtained from horses with Potomac horse fever were compared with the SF agent, we found that the SF agent was most closely related to Ohio isolate 081, followed by IllinoisT (T = type strain) and a Kentucky isolate. We observed strong antigenic cross-reactivities and similarities in Western blot (immunoblot) reaction profiles when we compared the SF agent, E. risticii, and E. sennetsu; however, weaker antigenic cross-reactivity was observed when the SF agent and N. helminthoeca were compared. Our results indicate that the SF agent is antigenically more closely related to E. risticii and E. sennetsu than to N. helminthoeca. The biological and antigenic characteristics and the 16S rRNA sequence data suggest that the SF agent is a new species that belongs to the genus Ehrlichia.

    The genus Pseudoligota Cameron, 1920 is discovered in Japan for the first time, resulting in two taxonomic changes: a new combination P. antennata (Bernhauer, 1907), comb. nov., and a new species P. nozakii Hashizume, Yamamoto & Maruyama, sp. nov. from Okinawa Prefecture, southwestern Japan. The former species has long been placed in the genus Oligota Mannerheim, 1830. This is the fourth genus in the subtribe Gyrophaenina known from Japan. The species P. affinis Cameron, 1939 from India and Peninsular Malaysia is placed as a junior synonym of P. antennata.

    Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in indoor air were investigated at 39 private residences in Selangor State, Malaysia to characterize the indoor air quality and to identify pollution sources. Twenty-two VOCs including isomers (14 aldehydes, 5 aromatic hydrocarbons, acetone, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene) were collected by 2 passive samplers for 24h and quantitated using high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Source profiling based on benzene/toluene ratio as well as statistical analysis (cluster analysis, bivariate correlation analysis and principal component analysis) was performed to identify pollution sources of the detected VOCs. The VOCs concentrations were compared with regulatory limits of air quality guidelines in WHO/EU, the US, Canada and Japan to clarify the potential health risks to the residents. The 39 residences were classified into 2 groups and 2 ungrouped residences based on the dendrogram in the cluster analysis. Group 1 (n=30) had mainly toluene (6.87±2.19μg/m3), formaldehyde (16.0±10.1μg/m3), acetaldehyde (5.35±4.57μg/m3) and acetone (11.1±5.95μg/m3) at background levels. Group 2 (n=7) had significantly high values of formaldehyde (99.3±10.7μg/m3) and acetone (35.8±12.6μg/m3), and a tendency to have higher values of acetaldehyde (23.7±13.5μg/m3), butyraldehyde (3.35±0.41μg/m3) and isovaleraldehyde (2.30±0.39μg/m3). The 2 ungrouped residences showed particularly high concentrations of BTX (benzene, toluene and xylene: 235μg/m3 in total) or acetone (133μg/m3). The geometric mean value of formaldehyde (19.2μg/m3) exceeded an 8-hour regulatory limit in Canada (9μg/m3), while those in other compounds did not exceed any regulatory limits, although a few residences exceeded at least one regulatory limit of benzene or acetaldehyde. Thus, the VOCs in the private residences were effectively characterized from the limited number of monitoring, and the potential health risks of the VOCs exposure, particularly formaldehyde, should be considered in the study area.

    In recent years, there has been major interest in the exposure to physical therapy during rehabilitation. Several publications have demonstrated its usefulness in clinical/medical and human machine interface (HMI) applications. An automated system will guide the user to perform the training during rehabilitation independently. Advances in engineering have extended electromyography (EMG) beyond the traditional diagnostic applications to also include applications in diverse areas such as movement analysis. This paper gives an overview of the numerous methods available to recognize motion patterns of EMG signals for both isotonic and isometric contractions. Various signal analysis methods are compared by illustrating their applicability in real-time settings. This paper will be of interest to researchers who would like to select the most appropriate methodology in classifying motion patterns, especially during different types of contractions. For feature extraction, the probability density function (PDF) of EMG signals will be the main interest of this study. Following that, a brief explanation of the different methods for pre-processing, feature extraction and classifying EMG signals will be compared in terms of their performance. The crux of this paper is to review the most recent developments and research studies related to the issues mentioned above.

    A Japanese man suffered from acute respiratory tract infection after returning to Japan from Bali, Indonesia in 2007. Miyazaki-Bali/2007, a strain of the species of Nelson Bay orthoreovirus, was isolated from the patient's throat swab using Vero cells, in which syncytium formation was observed. This is the sixth report describing a patient with respiratory tract infection caused by an orthoreovirus classified to the species of Nelson Bay orthoreovirus. Given the possibility that all of the patients were infected in Malaysia and Indonesia, prospective surveillance on orthoreovirus infections should be carried out in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, contact surveillance study suggests that the risk of human-to-human infection of the species of Nelson Bay orthoreovirus would seem to be low.
