    The outcome of 100 patients undergoing instrumental delivery with vacuum extractor is compared with that of 100 women delivered with the aid of obstetric forceps. Forceps deliveries were more commonly associated with maternal birth canal trauma (including episiotomy) whilst vacuum extractor carried higher odds of the neonate developing jaundice. Apart from these, there were no significant differences between these two groups in terms of maternal morbidity, neonatal trauma and morbidity and ultimate outcome (success with the type of instrument used). We conclude that with meticulous handling of the instrument and with an appropriate decision on the indication and the type of instrument used, the maternal and neonatal outcome could be equally good with the use of either instrument.

    The effect of selected high pressure processing (HPP) parameters on the sensory attributes and
    shelf life of jackfruit bulb packed using vacuum skin (VS) and vacuum nylon (VN) packaging
    was studied. The samples were stored at chilled temperature (4°C) for shelf life study. HPP
    significantly (p < 0.05) increased the shelf life of VS- and VP-packed jackfruit bulbs to 60 d
    during chilled storage. In terms of colour stability during storage, both VS- and VP-packed
    HP-treated jackfruit bulbs exhibited no significant differences (p > 0.05) in L*, a*, and b*
    values. Also, the VS- and VP-packed HP-treated samples exhibited no significant differences
    (p > 0.05) in terms of texture. However, the sensory evaluation carried out among 48 panellists
    showed that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) between the untreated and HP-treated jackfruit bulbs. The aforementioned results had proven that HPP treatment of 500 MPa for
    5 min could successfully extend the shelf life and retain the physicochemical properties of
    jackfruit bulbs, regardless of the types of packaging used.

    Neutrino is one of the nuclear particles that are necessary for the correct description of nuclear beta decay. The standard idea is that it is a massless neutral particle and its existence was postulated in order to save the conservation of ener gy principle. This particle was later detected experimentally and it is now known that neutrino has mass. The problem of astrophysical neutrino detection has produced a new phenomenon of neutrino oscillation where the three neutrino flav ours can oscillate between themselves. This paper studies the two component neutrino oscillation problem. We study the neutrino oscillation by using the Lagrangian formulation. In our study, we assume that the neutrinos are produced as n eutrino mass eigenstate and propagate in the vacuum in the superposition of two neutrino flavour state. The Lagrangian for neutrinos with their mass and the oscillation terms were obtained. By using the mass matrix in the Lagrangian, we formulate the time evolution operator in the interaction picture. The neutrino oscillation probability obtained by using the Lagrangian formulation have the same result with the one obtained by using quantum mechanics formulation. This study hopes to gain some deeper understanding into the behaviour of neutrino beyond the Standard Model.

    The effects of hole size on open hole tensile properties of Kevlar-glass fibre hybrid composite laminates were thoroughly investigated in this work. Woven Kevlar/glass fibre epoxy composite laminates were fabricated using hand lay-up and vacuum bagging technique. Specimens of five different hole size (1 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm) were carefully prepared before the tensile test was performed according to ASTM D5766. Results indicated that hybridizing Kevlar to glass fibres improved tensile strength and failure strain of hybrid composite specimen. In addition, increasing the hole size reduced strength retention of the hybrid specimen from 96% for 1 mm hole size to 62% and 44% for 6 mm and 12 mm, respectively. Fractography analysis showed that several types of failure mechanisms were observed such as brittle failure, ductile failure, fibre breakage, delamination and fibre-matrix splitting. It is concluded that as hole size increased, failure behaviour changed from a matrix dominated failure mode to a fibre-dominated failure mode.

    Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CFRE) is commonly been used in automotive and aviation industries. However, CFRE composite exhibits the problem of adherence between fiber and matrix. The interface between carbon fiber (CF) and epoxy becomes a weak zone and leads to the debonding defect of fiber and low mechanical properties of composites. The main focus of this study is to fabricate CFRE using carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as the hybrid reinforcement with CF. Ultrasonic method is used to disperse CNTs in distilled water for 20 minutes, followed by deposition of CNTs on CF using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique. Hand lay-up assisted vacuum bagging is employed to fabricate CNTs/CF/Epoxy composite. From morphologies, surface topography and peel off testing, it can be confirmed that 30 minutes deposition allowed more CNTs to deposit on CF. The flexural properties shows that 30 minutes deposition inherited high flexural strength, 67.4 MPa and modulus, 8490 MPa.

    We give details about how a surface plasmons with phase singularities can be produced when a Bessel beam light is totally reflected internally at the planar surface of a dielectric on which an infinitesimally thin film has been deposited. The characteristic property of such a light is the exponential decay with distance in a vacuum which can basically provide a two-dimensional surface plasmons with phase singularities with attractive enhancements. Such a phenomenon is governable by altering the incident angle and the order of the Bessel beam.

    The emission of Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) from plasma produced by vacuum spark discharge using stainless steel as anode material was investigated. The operating pressure for all the experiments carried out was maintained at below 10-4 mbar. The discharge voltage tested was from 8 kV to 20 kV. The inter-electrode distance suitable for high intensity and reproducible EUV emissions was found to be in the range of 2.6 mm to 4.6 mm. The output EUV energy scaled as ~ V02, where V0 is the discharge voltage.

    This study was carried out to investigate the effect of adding 1 vol% of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) into
    woven kenaf/epoxy laminated composites on their flexural properties and to compare between two techniques used to
    incorporate MWCNT into the composite which are spraying and solution techniques. Furthermore, the effect of MWCNT
    addition in woven glass/woven kenaf/epoxy hybrid composites at the same filler concentration on the flexural properties
    were also investigated. All the laminated composites with and without MWCNT were fabricated using vacuum bagging
    method. The flexural properties of the composite samples with and without MWCNT were evaluated by applying threepoint
    bending test. The results were supported by morphological observation. It was found that the addition of MWCNT
    using both spraying and solution techniques reduced the flexural strength and flexural modulus of MWCNT/woven kenaf/
    epoxy composites, with obvious reduction trend was shown by former technique. The morphological observation of the
    composites fracture surface showed that delamination failure occurred in MWCNT/woven kenaf/epoxy laminated composite
    prepared by spraying technique. Further investigation on hybrid composites showed that MWCNT/woven glass/woven
    kenaf/epoxy laminated hybrid composites exhibited significant improvement in the flexural properties.

    Microwave vacuum pyrolysis of palm kernel shell was examined to produce engineered biochar for application as additive in agriculture application. The pyrolysis approach, performed at 750 W of microwave power, produced higher yield of porous biochar (28 wt%) with high surface area (270 cm2/g) compared to the yield obtained by conventional approach (<23 wt%). Addition of the porous biochar in mushroom substrate showed increased moisture content (99%) compared to the substrate without biochar (96%). The mushroom substrate added with biochar (150 g) was optimal in shortening formation, growth, and full colonization of the mycelium within one month. Using 2.5% of the biochar in mushroom substrate desirably maintained the optimum pH level (6.8-7) during the mycelium colonization period, leading to high mycelium growth (up to 91%) and mushroom yield (up to 280 g). The engineered biochar shows great potential as moisture retention and neutralizing agent in mushroom cultivation.

    We investigate the methanol absorption spectrum in the range 5.5-10.8 eV to provide accurate and absolute cross-sections values. The main goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of methanol electronic-state spectroscopy by employing high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements together with state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculation methods. The VUV spectrum reveals several new features that are not previously reported in literature, for n > 3 in the transitions (nsσ(a') ← (2a″)) (1A' ← X̃1A') and (nsσ, npσ, npσ', ndσ ← (7a')) (1A' ← X̃1A'), and with particular relevance to vibrational progressions of the CH3 rocking mode, v11'(a″), mode in the (3pπ(a″) ← (2a″)) (21A' ← X̃1A') absorption band at 8.318 eV. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross-sections have subsequently been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of methanol in the Earth's atmosphere from the ground level up to the limit of the stratosphere (50 km altitude). This shows that solar photolysis plays a negligible role in the removal of methanol from the lower atmosphere compared with competing sink mechanisms. Torsional potential energy scans, as a function of the internal rotation angle for the ground and first Rydberg states, have also been calculated as part of this investigation.

    The main objective of the present study was to produce crispy deep fried chips from lotus rhizome with acceptable organoleptic qualities. Effects of three different frying temperatures (180, 190 and 200°C, for 15-20 sec) on the overall qualities (proximate composition, texture and sensory) of lotus rhizome chips were determined. Prior to frying, freshly procured rhizomes were sliced uniformly (thickness of ~2.5 mm, diameter ~ 5.2mm), blanched in hot water (85°C for 3.5 min) and dried in a hot air vacuum oven (60°C, 24 h). Results on textural studies showed force required to break the chips to be dependent on temperature. Sensory quality results revealed high acceptability for chips produced by frying at 200°C. This reported work being a preliminary study, further research works is warranted to standardize the protocols for industrial scale production of lotus rhizome chips, with improved taste and flavour, keeping in mind the safety and quality issues.

    Neutron aperture is one of the collimator components in a neutron radiography facility. The optimum design of neutron aperture is very importance in order to obtain largest L/D ratio with highest thermal neutron flux and low gamma-rays at the image plane. In this study, the optimization of neutron aperture parameters were done using Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code, version five (MCNP5). This code has a capability to simulate the neutron, photon, and electron or coupled of neutron/photon/electron transport, including the capability to calculate eigen values for critical system. The aperture parameters concerned in this study are the selection of best aperture material, aperture thickness, aperture position and aperture center hole diameter. In these simulations, vacuum beam port medium was applied.

    Siliceous mesoporous molecular sieve (Si-MCM-41) material with highly ordered hexagonal pore arrangement was synthesized at 373 K for 8-days duration by hydrothermal method, dried at 393 K and calcined at 823 K in N2 atmosphere. The calcined Si-MCM-41 was later functionalized with 10-50 wt. % monoethanolamine (MEA) by impregnation method and dried in vacuum at 343 K. The MEA-Si-MCM-41 samples were characterized for their physicochemical properties with FTIR, XRD, TGA, HRTEM, FESEM, BET and elemental analysis. XRD results showed that the intensity of the characteristic peaks of Si-MCM-41 reduces with increasing loading of MEA indicating that the MEA molecules are loaded in the pores as well as on the surface of Si-MCM-41. The appearance of FTIR peaks corresponding to N-H, C-N and C-H bonds suggested that Si-MCM-41 has been functionalized with MEA. The presence of Si-O-Si peaks in FTIR spectra of MEA-Si-MCM-41 samples indicates that the hexagonal pore arrangement remains intact and this is supported by HRTEM images. FESEM images show that MEA-Si-MCM-41 samples became agglomerated with increase loading of MEA. TGA analyses show that the MEA-Si-MCM-41 samples are thermally stable up to 528 K. N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms show that the textural properties of Si-MCM-41 material slowly change from a mesoporous material to non-porous material as the MEA loading increases due to pore filling effect during functionalization with MEA. Detection of N, C and H by elemental analysis confirms the presence of MEA in MEA-Si-MCM-41 samples.

    This study aimed to assess the effects of fresh, thermal drying method (vacuum oven drying), and nonthermal drying method (freeze drying) on the antioxidant activities of leaves and berries of Cayratia trifolia using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity (DPPH) assays. The total phenolic content (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC) of the leaves and berries of C. trifolia were also measured. Based on the results obtained, the TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activities of the leaves and berries were arranged in the following order: freeze-dried sample with methanol extraction > vacuum-dried sample with methanol extraction > freeze-dried sample with water extraction > vacuum-dried sample with water extraction > fresh sample with methanol extraction > fresh sample with water extraction. The results showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the fresh and dried samples. In conclusion, freeze drying was found to be a good method for maintaining TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activities by FRAP and DPPH methods in the leaves and berries of C. trifolia.

    An investigation on a batch production of palm kernel oil polyol (PKO-p) was conducted via esterification and condensation.
    The process design was thoroughly studied as a preliminary step for future upscaling. The process variables included
    necessity of vacuum pump, controlling of heating rate, recording the production time, nitrogen gas flow and agitator
    speed. About 250 mL PKO-p was successfully synthesized within 3 h. Vacuum pressure was applied to haul out moisture
    from the system. The control of heating rate and production time are vital to avoid sudden oxidation.

    Low-temperature growth, as well as the transfer free growth on substrates, is the major concern of graphene research for its practical applications. Here we propose a simple method to achieve the transfer free graphene growth on SiO2 covered Si (SiO2/Si) substrate at 250 °C based on a solid-liquid-solid reaction. The key to this approach is the catalyst metal, which is not popular for graphene growth by chemical vapor deposition. A catalyst metal film of 500 nm thick was deposited onto an amorphous C (50 nm thick) coated SiO2/Si substrate. The sample was then annealed at 250 °C under vacuum condition. Raman spectra measured after the removal of the catalyst by chemical etching showed intense G and 2D peaks together with a small D and intense SiO2 related peaks, confirming the transfer free growth of multilayer graphene on SiO2/Si. The domain size of the graphene confirmed by optical microscope and atomic force microscope was about 5 μm in an average. Thus, this approach will open up a new route for transfer free graphene growth at low temperatures.

    OBJECTIVE: This single center parallel, randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the propensity of microbial adherence on vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) with different surface roughness imprints.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients debonded from fixed appliances at a teaching institution were allocated by block randomization stratified for gender to three groups [VFRs fabricated on conventional, fused deposition modeling (FDM) or stereolithography apparatus (SLA) working models]. Participants wore the VFRs for three months full-time followed by three months part-time. VFRs were collected after each follow-up for Streptococcus and yeast counts. Surface roughness was measured indirectly on the working models using a 3D optical surface texture analyzer. Blinding was not feasible due to appliance appearance. The trial was registered [NCT03844425 ( ClinicalTrials.gov )] and funded by the Universiti Malaya Dental Postgraduate Research Grant (DPRG/14/19).

    RESULTS: Thirty participants (eleven conventional, ten FDM, and nine SLA) were analyzed after six dropped out. No harms were reported. Microbial counts between the groups were not significantly different. There were more microbes in the lower VFRs than upper VFRs (total count: p<0.05; effect size, 0.5 during full-time wear and 0.4 during part-time wear). SLA had significantly (p<0.05) smoother surface than FDM (effect size, 0.3) and conventional models (effect size, 0.5). Microbial adherence was not associated with working model surface roughness.

    CONCLUSION: Microbial adherence on VFRs was not influenced by degree of surface roughness imprints from working models.

    CLINICAL RELEVANCE: 3D printed models can be used to make VFRs. Lower VFRs tended to accumulate oral microbes, potentially increasing the oral health risk in the lower arch.

    INTRODUCTION: The maxillomandibular relationship (MMR) record is a critical step to establish the new occlusion in implant supported complete mouth rehabilitation. Using patients existing denture for recording the MMR requires implant definitive cast to be modified extensively to completely seat the denture (with unaltered flanges) on it. This may influence the correct seating of the denture on the implant definitive cast causing faulty recording of the MMR.
    MATERIALS AND METHOD: Elastomeric record bases, reinforced with the resin framework, are fabricated and relined with the light body elastomeric material when all the healing abutments are in place. The MMR is recorded with these elastomeric record bases using vacuum formed facial surface index of the occluded existing dentures as a guideline.
    RESULTS: The elastomeric record bases with facial surface index of the existing dentures can allow clinicians to record MMR records without removing the healing abutments from the mouth with acceptable accuracy. This can save chair-side time of the procedure. The record of facial surfaces of existing complete denture in the form of vacuum formed sheet helps to set the occlusal vertical dimension.
    CONCLUSION: Use of facial surface index together with the elastomeric record bases can be the useful alternative technique to record the MMR in patients with implant supported full mouth rehabilitation. Further study is required to prove its routine clinical utility.
