Background: Many tilapia species or varieties have been widely introduced and have become an economically important food fish in China. Information on the genetic backgrounds of these populations is deficient and requires more research, especially for red tilapia strains.

Methods: In the present study, displacement loop (D-loop) sequences were used to evaluate the genetic relationship and diversity of seven tilapia populations that are widely cultured in China; this was done specifically to speculate on the maternal ancestry of red tilapia strains. Three red tilapia varieties of Oreochromis ssp., Taiwan (TW), Israel (IL), and Malaysia (MY) strains and other populations, including O. aureus (AR), O. niloticus (NL), O. mossambicus (MS), and the GIFT strain of O. niloticus, were collected and analyzed in this study.

Results: A total of 146 polymorphic sites and 32 haplotypes of D-loop sequences were detected among 332 fish and four major haplotypes were shared among the populations. The TW and NL populations had a greater number of haplotypes (20 and 8, respectively). The haplotype diversity (Hd) and nucleotide diversity (π) of each population ranged from 0.234 to 0.826, and 0 to 0.060, respectively. The significant positive Tajima's D value of neutral test were detected in the NL, IL, and MY populations (P  0.05). The nearest K2P genetic distance (D = 0.014) was detected between the MS and TW populations, whereas, the farthest (D = 0.101) was found between the GIFT and AR populations. The results from the molecular variance analysis (AMOVA) showed that there was an extremely significant genetic variation observed among the populations (P

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a critical role in the implementation of child-friendly healthcare, ensuring that pediatric patients receive comprehensive and compassionate services. However, there is a global scarcity of research evaluating nurses' practices in delivering child-friendly healthcare. Therefore, this study focuses on exploring the assessment of child-friendly healthcare practices from the perspective of nurses themselves.

METHOD: This descriptive qualitative study employed purposive and snowball sampling methods to recruit 14 pediatric nurses from six hospitals in Zhejiang province, Southeast China. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face between January and June 2024. Data were analyzed through the qualitative content analysis approach.

RESULTS: We identified 415 unique meaning units in the interview data, 332 of which were related to child-friendly healthcare practice assessment. These units were classified into 58 codes across 4 categories and 17 subcategories. The four categories were identified: services designed for children's interests, tailoring the environment adapted for children, facilitating social interactions, and promoting childhood development.

CONCLUSION: The findings from this study were derived from the perspectives of Chinese nurses on child-friendly healthcare practice assessment, offering a comprehensive and multidimensional view of this field. The results reflect the current state and future direction of child-friendly healthcare in China, which will aid in sustaining the development of a child-friendly healthcare evaluation system.

Microplastic fibers from textiles have been known to significantly contribute to marine microplastic pollution. However, little is known about the microfiber formation and discharge during textile production. In this study, we have quantified microfiber emissions from one large and representative textile factory during different stages, spanning seven different materials, including cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics, to further guide control strategies. Wet-processing steps released up to 25 times more microfibers than home laundering, with dyeing contributing to 95.0% of the total emissions. Microfiber release could be reduced by using white coloring, a lower dyeing temperature, and a shorter dyeing duration. Thinner, denser yarns increased microfiber pollution, whereas using tightly twisted fibers mitigated release. Globally, wet textile processing potentially produced 6.4 kt of microfibers in 2020, with China, India, and the US as significant contributors. The study underlined the environmental impact of textile production and the need for mitigation strategies, particularly in dyeing processes and fiber choice. In addition, no significant difference was observed between the virgin polyesters and the used ones. Replacing virgin fibers with recycled fibers in polyester fabrics, due to their increasing consumption, might offer another potential solution. The findings highlighted the substantial impact of textile production on microfiber released into the environment, and optimization of material selection, knitting technologies, production processing, and recycled materials could be effective mitigation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID (LC) is widespread; however, limited information has been reported on the likelihood that symptoms remit over time.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the likelihood of improvement among persons with likely LC.

DESIGN: Prospective, multisite cohort study (RECOVER-Adult [Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery]).

SETTING: 83 U.S.-based sites across 33 states; Washington, DC; and Puerto Rico.

PARTICIPANTS: 1019 persons in RECOVER-Adult with likely LC (LC Research Index [LCRI] ≥11) 12 months after first SARS-CoV-2 infection.

MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was time until 2 consecutive study visits with LCRI less than 11. Secondary outcomes were time until LCRI measure reduced 50% or more and quality of life was good or better, and LCRI decreased to 0. Unadjusted estimates of cumulative incidence and adjusted marginal cumulative incidence by age, sex, SARS-CoV-2 wave, and LC subtype were reported across all follow-up time points.

RESULTS: An estimated 36.2% (95% CI, 33.0% to 39.5%) met the primary outcome by 24 months after infection, and 50.1% (CI, 46.1% to 54.0%) met the primary outcome by 36 months. An estimated 56.4% (CI, 52.2% to 60.4%) and 26.9% (CI, 23.3% to 30.5%), respectively, met the 2 secondary outcomes by 36 months. Among persons who still reported likely LC at 18 months and 24 months after first infection, relative timing of subsequent symptom improvement was similar.

LIMITATION: Findings in this observational cohort are interpretable in a population with prevalent likely LC and do not address causal relationships between individual characteristics and symptom improvement.

CONCLUSION: Among persons with likely LC 12 months after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, one half experience meaningful reductions in symptoms by 36 months, whereas a quarter experience complete remission of symptoms. These findings underscore both the potential for natural recovery and the urgent need for placebo-controlled therapeutic intervention trials.
