    STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey study.

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of burnout, assess the personal and professional characteristics associated with burnout in spine surgeons and determine their quality of life.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased sense of accomplishment that leads to decreased effectiveness at work. To date, there has been a lack of information on the prevalence of burnout among spine surgeons worldwide and the risk factors associated with this condition.

    METHODS: An electronic survey with members of AO Spine was performed in May 2018. The survey evaluated demographic variables, practice characteristics, burnout, and quality of life. Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and EuroQol 5-dimensions (EQ5D) were used to evaluate burnout and quality of life, respectively.

    RESULTS: A total of 818 surgeons from 86 countries completed the survey. The prevalence of burnout was 30.6%. In the multiple linear model, emotional fatigue was independently associated with younger age (B = -0.17, CI95% = -0.26 to -0.07, P spine surgeons worldwide. There is a significant association between burnout scores and decreased general quality of life. These results highlight the need to develop interventional programs to better identify, prevent, and manage this condition among practicing spine surgeons.Level of Evidence: 4.

    STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of prospective data.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine if surgically leveling the upper thoracic spine in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis results in level shoulders postoperatively.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Research has shown that preoperatively tilted proximal ribs and T1 tilt are more correlated with trapezial prominence than with clavicle angle.

    METHODS: Prospectively collected Lenke 1 and 2 cases from a single center were reviewed. Clinical shoulder imbalance was measured from 2-year postoperative clinical photos. Lateral shoulder imbalance was assessed utilizing clavicle angle. Medial imbalance was assessed with trapezial angle (TA), and trapezial area ratio (TAR). First rib angle, T1 tilt, and upper thoracic curve were measured from 2-year radiographs. Angular measurements were considered level if ≤ 3° of zero. TAR was considered level if ≤ 1 standard deviation of the natural log of the ratio. Upper thoracic Cobb at 2-years was categorized as at or below the mean value (≤ 14°) versus above the mean.

    RESULTS: Eighty-four patients were identified. There was no significant difference in the percentage of patients with a level clavicle angle or TAR based on first rib being level, T1 tilt being level, or upper thoracic Cobb being at/below versus above the mean (P spine does not guarantee clinically balanced shoulders or clavicles. Trapezial prominence was impacted by leveling T1 and the first rib and by minimizing the upper thoracic curve. How to achieve laterally balanced shoulders postoperatively remains unclear.

    STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perioperative outcome of posterior spinal fusion in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients comparing a single attending surgeon strategy (G1) versus a dual attending surgeon strategy (G2).

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The complication rate for surgical correction in AIS is significant. There are no prospective studies that investigate dual attending surgeon strategy for posterior spinal fusion in AIS.

    METHODS: A total of 60 patients (30 patients in each arm) were recruited. The patients were comparable for age, gender, Lenke classification, major Cobb angle magnitude, and number of fusion levels. The anesthetic, surgical, and postoperative protocol was standardized. The outcome measures included the operative duration, blood loss, postoperative hemoglobin, need for transfusion, morphine usage, duration of hospital stay, intraoperative lactate levels, and pH. The timing of the operation at six critical stages of the operation was recorded.

    STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the proximal thoracic (PT) flexibility and its compensatory ability above the "potential UIV."

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Shoulder and neck imbalance can be caused by overcorrection of the main thoracic (MT) curve due to inability of PT segment to compensate.

    METHODS: Cervical supine side bending (CSB) radiographs of 100 Lenke 1 and 2 patients were studied. We further stratified Lenke 1 curves into Lenke 1-ve: PT side bending (PTSB) 80.0% of cases of the PT segment were unable to compensate at T3-T6. In Lenke 1+ve curves, 78.4% were unable to compensate at T6, followed by T5 (75.7%), T4 (73.0%), T3 (59.5%), T2 (27.0%), and T1 (21.6%). In Lenke 1-ve curves, 36.4% of cases were unable to compensate at T6, followed by T5 (45.5%), T4 (45.5%), T3 (30.3%), T2 (21.2%), and T1 (15.2%). A significant difference between Lenke 1-ve and Lenke 1+ve was observed from T3 to T6. The difference between Lenke 1+ve and Lenke 2 curves was significant only at T2.

    CONCLUSION: The compensation ability and the flexibility of the PT segments of Lenke 1-ve and Lenke 1+ve curves were different. Lenke 1+ve curves demonstrated similar characteristics to Lenke 2 curves.

    OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the effectiveness of chewing gum on promoting faster bowel function and its ability to hasten recovery for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) after posterior spinal fusion (PSF) surgery.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sham feeding with chewing gum had been reported to reduce the incidence of postoperative ileus by accelerating recovery of bowel function.

    METHODS: We prospectively recruited and randomized 60 patients with AIS scheduled for PSF surgery into treatment (chewing gum) and control group. The patient-controlled anesthesia usage, wound pain score, abdominal pain score, nausea score, and abdominal girth were assessed and recorded at 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 hours postoperatively. The timing for the first fluid intake, first oral intake, sitting up, walking, first flatus after surgery, first bowel opening after surgery, and duration of hospital stay were also assessed and recorded.

    RESULTS: We found that there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in patient-controlled anesthesia usage, wound pain score, abdominal pain score, nausea score, and abdominal girth between treatment (chewing gum) and control groups. We also found that there were no significant difference (P > 0.05) in postoperative recovery parameters, which were the first fluid intake, first oral intake, sitting up after surgery, walking after surgery, first flatus after surgery, first bowel opening after surgery, and duration of hospital stay between both groups. The wound pain was the worst at 12 hours postoperatively, which progressively improved in both groups. The abdominal pain progressively worsened to the highest score at 48 hours in the treatment group and 36 hours in the control group before improving after that. The pattern of severity and recovery of wound pain and abdominal pain was different.

    CONCLUSION: We found that chewing gum did not significantly reduce the abdominal pain, promote faster bowel function, or hasten patient recovery.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the parents'/patients' perception on the informed consent process prior to posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients.

    METHODS: Fifty AIS patients operated between August 2019 and November 2019 were prospectively recruited. Parents'/patients' perceptions on three sections were evaluated: the process of the informed consent, specific operative risk which they were most concerned with and the accountability of surgeons for the surgical risks.     STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the perioperative outcome of posterior spinal fusion (PSF) between overweight (OW) adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and the healthy-weight (HW) patients using propensity score matching analysis.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Obesity was found to increase postoperative surgical complications compared with the nonobese group. In scoliosis correction surgery, association of OW and perioperative risks had been explored, but most studies were retrospective in nature.

    METHODS: From 374 patients, two comparable groups were matched using propensity score matching analysis with one-to-one nearest neighbor matching and a caliper of 0.2. There were 46 HW and OW patients in each group. The main outcome measures were intraoperative blood loss, use of allogeneic blood transfusion, operative time, duration of hospital stay post-surgery, total patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) morphine usage, perioperative complications, side bending flexibility (SBF), and correction rate (%).

    RESULTS: The mean age was 13.3 ± 1.7 and 13.2 ± 1.7 years for HW and OW groups, respectively. The majority of the patients were Lenke 1 curves; 32.6% (HW) and 26.1% (OW) with an average Cobb angle of 69.0 ± 19.1° and 68.8 ± 18.4° for each group, respectively. The two groups were comparable. The operation time was 145.2 ± 42.2 and 154.4 ± 48.3 minutes for HW and OW groups, respectively (P > 0.05). The intraoperative blood loss was almost similar in both groups; 955.1 ± 497.7 mL (HW group) and 1011.8 ± 552.7 mL (OW group) (P > 0.05). Total PCA morphine used was higher in OW group (30.4 ± 22.7 mg) than in the HW group (16.2 ± 11.3 mg). No complication was observed in HW group, while in OW group, one patient (2.2%) developed intraoperative seizure.

    CONCLUSION: OW AIS patients (≥85th percentile) had similar mean operative time, intraoperative blood loss, allogeneic transfusion rate, length of stay, and perioperative complications compared with HW AIS patients.

    STUDY DESIGN: Case report.

    OBJECTIVE: To report the successful rehabilitation and the training progress of an elite high performance martial art exponent after selective thoracic fusion for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS).

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Posterior spinal fusion for AIS will result in loss of spinal flexibility. The process of rehabilitation after posterior spinal fusion for AIS remains controversial and there are few reports of return to elite sports performance after posterior spinal fusion for AIS.

    METHODS: We report a case of a 25-year-old lady who was a national Wu Shu exponent. She was a Taolu (Exhibition) exponent. She underwent Selective Thoracic Fusion (T4 to T12) using alternate level pedicle screw placement augmented with autogenous local bone graft in June 2014. She commenced her training at 3-month postsurgery and the intensity of her training was increased after 6 months postsurgery. We followed her up to 2 years postsurgery and showed no instrumentation failure or lost of correction.

    RESULTS: After selective thoracic fusion, her training process consisted of mainly speed training, core strengthening, limb strengthening, and flexibility exercises. At 17 months of postoperation, she participated in 13th World Wu Shu Championship 2015 and won the silver medal.

    CONCLUSION: Return to elite high-performance martial arts sports was possible after selective thoracic fusion for AIS. The accelerated and intensive training regime did not lead to any instrumentation failure and complications.

    STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort study.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of an accelerated recovery protocol for Asian adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF).

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There has been successful implementation of an accelerated recovery protocol for AIS patients undergoing PSF in the western population. No similar studies have been reported in the Asian population.

    METHODS: Seventy-four AIS (65 F, 9 M) patients scheduled for PSF surgery were recruited. The accelerated protocol encompasses preoperative regime, preoperative day of surgery counseling, intraoperative strategies, an accelerated postoperative rehabilitation and pain management regime. All patients were operated using a dual attending surgeon strategy. Outcome measures included pain scores at five time intervals, length of stay, and detailed recovery milestones. Any complications or readmissions during the first 4 months postoperative period were recorded.

    RESULTS: Mean duration of operation was 2.2 ± 0.3 hours with a mean blood loss of 824.3 ± 418.2 mL. No patients received allogenic blood transfusion. The mean length of stay was 3.6 ± 0.6 days. Surgical wound pain score was 6.4 ± 2.1 at 12 hours, which reduced to 5.0 ± 2.0 at 60 hours. Abdominal pain peaked at 36 hours with pain scores 2.4 ± 2.9. First liquid intake was at 5.2 ± 7.5 hours, urinary catheter removal at 18.7 ± 4.8 hours, sitting up at 20.6 ± 9.1 hours, ambulation at 27.2 ± 0.5 hours, consumption of solid food at 32.2 ± 0.5 hours, first flatus at 39.0 ± 0.7 hours, and first bowel movement at 122.1 ± 2.0 hours. The complication rate was 1.4% due to superficial wound infection with one patient failed to comply with the accelerated protocol.

    CONCLUSION: An accelerated recovery protocol following PSF for AIS is feasible without increasing the complication or readmission rates. The total length of stay was 3.6 days and this is comparable with the outcome in western population.

    STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical practices of spine surgeons within the Asia Pacific region.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: COVID-19 pandemic had changed spine surgeons' clinical practices and their concerns toward personal and family risk of infection.

    METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was carried out from May 4, 2020 to June 4, 2020. The questionnaire was administered using REDCAP. The online questionnaire includes four sections. First section includes surgeon's demographics, background, type of clinical practice, and status of pandemic in their country. Second section includes volume and the type of spine surgery practice before the COVID pandemic. Third section includes changes of clinical practice during the pandemic and the last section was regarding their concern on COVID transmission.

    RESULTS: Total of 222 respondents from 19 countries completed the questionnaire. During the pandemic, 92.3% of the respondents felt their clinical practice was affected. 58.5% respondents reported reduced outpatient clinic hours and 74.6% respondents reported reduced operation theatre hours due to the enforcement by the hospital administration. The mean reduction of clinic volume for all countries was 48.1%. There was a significant reduction in the number of surgeries performed in Japan, Malaysia, India, Philippines, and South Korea. This was due to reduced patient load. More than 60% of respondents were worried being infected by COVID-19 virus and >68% were worried of transmission to their family members.

    CONCLUSION: COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the clinical and surgical practice of spine surgeons in the Asia Pacific region. Clinics were closed or the practice hours reduced. Similarly, surgical theaters were closed, reduced, or limited to semi-emergency and emergency surgeries. Spine surgeons were moderately concerned of contracting COVID-19 during their clinical practice but were extremely concerned to transmit this disease to their family members.

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between postoperative upper instrumented vertebrae (UIV) tilt angle with postoperative medial shoulder and neck imbalance.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Studies had found that current recommendations for UIV selection were not predictive of good postoperative shoulder balance.

    METHODS: A total of 98 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with Lenke 1/2 curves who underwent posterior spinal fusion between 2013 and 2014 with minimum follow-up of 2 years were recruited. Radiological parameters: UIV tilt angle, T1 tilt, cervical axis, and clavicle angle were measured preoperatively, postoperatively, and at final follow-up.

    RESULTS: Mean age was 16.2 ± 6.2 years. Mean follow-up was 37.9 ± 6.5 months. There were 73.5% Lenke 1 and 26.5% Lenke 2 curves. Significant factors affecting postoperative T1 Tilt were postoperative UIV tilt angle, preoperative T1 tilt, and preoperative UIV tilt angle. Postoperative UIV tilt angle and preoperative cervical axis were significant factors affecting cervical axis at final follow-up. UIV level was not significant independent factor that affected postoperative T1 tilt and cervical axis.     OBJECTIVE: To assess the learning curve of a dual attending surgeon strategy in severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The advantages of a dual attending surgeon strategy in improving the perioperative outcome in scoliosis surgery had been reported. However, the learning curve of this strategy in severe scoliosis had not been widely studied.

    METHODS: A total of 105 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with Cobb angle of 90° or greater, who underwent posterior spinal fusion using a dual attending surgeon strategy were recruited. Primary outcomes were operative time, total blood loss, allogeneic blood transfusion requirement, length of hospital stay from time of operation and perioperative complications. Cases were sorted chronologically into group 1: cases 1 to 35, group 2: cases 36 to 70, and group 3: case 71 to 105. Mean operative time (≤193.3 min), total blood loss (≤1612.2 mL), combination of both and allogeneic blood transfusion were the selected criteria for receiver operating characteristic analysis of the learning curve.

    RESULTS: The mean Cobb angle was 104.5° ± 12.3°. The operative time, total blood loss, and allogeneic blood transfusion requirement reduced significantly for group 1 (220.6 ± 54.8 min; 2011.3 ± 881.8 mL; 12 cases) versus group 2 (183.6 ± 36.7 min; 1481.6 ± 1035.5 mL; 3 cases) and group 1 versus group 3 (175.6 ± 38.4 min; 1343.7 ± 477.8 mL; 3 cases) (P

    STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

    OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors that are associated with rod slippage and to study the pattern of achieved length gain with a standard distraction methodology.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Ability to achieve successful magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) distraction is crucial for gradual spine lengthening. Rod slippage has been described as a failure of internal magnet rotation leading to a slippage and an inability to distract the rod. However, its onset, significance, and risk factors are currently unknown. In addition, how this phenomenon pertains to actual distracted lengths is also unknown.

    METHODS: A total of 22 patients with MCGR and at least six distraction episodes were prospectively studied. Patients with rod slippage occurring less than six distraction episodes were considered early rod slippage whereas those with more than six episodes or have yet to slip were grouped as late rod slippage. The association of parameters including body habitus, maturity status, age of implantation, total number of distractions, months of distraction from initial implantation, initial and postoperative Cobb angle, T1-T12, T1-S1, T5-T12 kyphosis, curve flexibility, instrumented length, and distance between magnets in dual rods and between the magnets and apex of the curve with early or late onset of rod slippage were studied. Differences between expected and achieved distraction lengths were assessed with reference to rod slippage episodes and rod exchanges to determine any patterns of diminishing returns.

    RESULTS: Patients had mean age of 7.1 years at diagnosis with mean follow-up of 49.8 months. A mean 32.4 distractions were performed per patient. Early rod slippage occurred in 14 patients and late rod slippage occurred in eight patients. Increased height, weight, body mass index, older age, increased T1-12 and T1-S1 lengths, and less distance between magnets were significantly associated with early rod slippage. Expected distraction lengths did not translate to achieve distraction lengths and reduced gains were only observed after achieving one-third of the allowable distracted length in the MCGR. Length gains return to baseline after rod exchange.

    CONCLUSION: This is the first study to specifically analyze the impact of rod slippage on distraction lengths and the risk factors associated with its onset and frequency. Increased body habitus and reduced distance between internal magnets significantly influenced rod slippage events. Diminishing returns in distracted length gains were only observed after a period of usage.

    STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study.

    OBJECTIVE: To analyze the amount of blood loss at different stages of Posterior Instrumented Spinal Fusion (PSF) surgery in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Knowing the pattern of blood loss at different surgical stages may enable the surgical team to formulate a management strategy to reduce intraoperative blood loss.

    METHODS: One hundred AIS patients who underwent PSF from January 2013 to December 2014 were recruited. The operation was divided into six stages; stage 1-exposure, stage 2-screw insertion, stage 3-release, stage 4-correction, stage 5-corticotomies and bone grafting, and stage 6-closure. The duration and blood loss at each stage was documented. The following values were calculated: total blood loss, blood loss per estimated blood volume, blood loss per minute, blood loss per vertebral level fused, and blood loss per minute per vertebral level fused.

    RESULTS: There were 89 females and 11 males. The mean age was 17.0 ± 5.8 years old. Majority (50.0%) were Lenke 1 curve type. The mean preoperative major Cobb angle was 64.9 ± 15.0°. The mean number of levels fused was 9.5 ± 2.3 levels. The mean operating time was 188.5 ± 53.4 minutes with a mean total blood loss 951.0 ± 454.0 mLs. The highest mean blood loss occurred at stage 2 (301.0 ± 196.7 mL), followed by stage 4 (226.8 ± 171.2 mL) and stage 5 (161.5 ± 146.6 mL). The highest mean blood loss per minute was at stage 5 (17.1 ± 18.3 mL/min), followed by stage 3 (12.0 ± 10.8 mL/min). The highest mean blood loss per vertebral levels fused was at stage 2 (31.0 ± 17.7 mL/level), followed by stage 4 (23.9 ± 18.1 mL/level) and stage 5 (16.6 ± 13.3 mL/level).

    CONCLUSION: All stages were significant contributors to the total blood loss except exposure (stage 1) and closure (stage 6). Blood loss per minute and blood loss per minute per level was highest during corticotomies (stage 5), followed by release (stage 3). However, the largest amount of total blood loss occurred during screw insertion (stage 2).

    STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.

    OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to assess the conformity of the radiological neck and shoulder balance parameters throughout a follow-up period of more than 2 years.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Postoperative shoulder and neck imbalance are undesirable features among Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis patients who underwent Posterior Spinal Fusion. There are many clinical and radiological parameters used to assess this clinical outcome. However, we do not know whether these radiological parameters conform throughout the entire follow-up period.

    METHODS: This was a retrospective study done in a single academic institution. Inclusion criteria were patients with scoliosis who underwent posterior instrumented spinal fusion with pedicle screw fixation and attended all scheduled follow-ups for at least 24 months postoperatively. Radiological shoulder parameters were measured from both preoperative antero-posterior and postoperative antero-posterior radiographs. Lateral shoulder parameters were: Radiographic Shoulder Height, Clavicle Angle (Cla-A), Clavicle-Rib Intersection Difference, and Coracoid Height Difference. Medial shoulder and neck parameters were: T1 Tilt and Cervical Axis (CA).

    RESULTS: The radiographs of 50 patients who had surgery done from November 2013 to November 2015 were analyzed. Mean age of this cohort was 16.3 ± 7.0 years. There were 38 (76%) female patients and 12 (24%) male patients. Mean final follow-up was 38.6 ± 5.8 months.     STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of a prospectively-collected data.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the severity of the curve magnitude in Lenke 1 and 2 Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients affects the distance and position of the aorta from the vertebra.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There were studies that looked into the position of the aorta in scoliotic patients but none of them documented the change in distance of the aorta to the vertebra in relation to the magnitude of the scoliosis.

    METHODS: Patients with Lenke 1 and 2 AIS who underwent posterior spinal fusion using pedicle screw construct and had a preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan performed were recruited. The radiological parameters measured on preoperative CT scan were: Aortic-Vertebral Distance (AVD), Entry-Aortic Distance (EAD), Aortic-Vertebral angle (AVA), Pedicle Aorta angle/Aortic Alpha angle (α angle), and Aortic Beta angle (β angle).

    RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients were recruited. Significant moderate to strong positive correlation was found between AVD and Cobb angle from T8 to T12 vertebrae (r = 0.360 to 0.666). The EAD was generally small in the thoracic region (T4-T10) with mean EAD of less than 30 mm. Among all apical vertebrae, the mean AVD was 5.9 ± 2.2 mm with significant moderate-strong positive correlation to Cobb angle (r = 0.580). The mean α angle was 37.7 ± 8.7° with significant weak positive correlation with Cobb angle (r = 0.325).

    CONCLUSION: The larger the scoliotic curve, the aorta was located further away from the apical vertebral wall. The aorta has less risk of injury from the left lateral pedicle screw breach in larger scoliotic curve at the apical region. The distance from the pedicle screw entry point to the wall of the aorta was generally small (less than 30 mm) in the thoracic region (T4-T10).

    STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective propensity score matching study.

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether menses affect intraoperative blood loss in female adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF) surgeries.

    SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There were concerns whether patients having menses will have higher intraoperative blood loss if surgery were to be done during this period.

    METHODS: This study included 372 females who were operated between May 2016 to May 2019. Fifty-five patients had menses during surgery (Group 1, G1) and 317 patients did not have menses during surgery (Group 2, G2). Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis with one-to-one, nearest neighbor matching technique and with a match tolerance of 0.001 was used. The main outcome measures were intraoperative blood loss (IBL), volume of blood salvaged, transfusion rate, preoperative hemoglobin, preoperative platelet, preoperative prothrombin time, preoperative activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), international normalized ratio (INR), and postoperative hemoglobin. Postoperative Cobb angle and correction rate were also documented.

    RESULTS: At the end of PSM analysis, 46 patients from each group were matched and balanced. The average operation duration for G1 was 140.8 ± 43.0 minutes compared with 143.1 ± 48.3 minutes in G2 (P = 0.806). The intraoperative blood loss for G1 was 904.3 ± 496.3 mL and for G2 was 907.9 ± 482.8 mL (P = 0.972). There was no significant difference in terms of normalized blood loss (NBL), volume of blood salvaged during surgery, preoperative hemoglobin, postoperative hemoglobin, hemoglobin drift, estimated blood volume (EBV), IBL per EBV and IBL per level fused (P > 0.05). No postoperative complications were encountered in both groups. On average, the postoperative hospital stay was 3.5 ± 0.8 days for both groups (P = 0.143).

    CONCLUSION: Performing corrective surgery during the menstrual phase in female AIS patients is safe without risk of increased blood loss.
