    Therapeutic application of metallic nanoparticles such as gold nanoparticles have been extensively investigated and intriguing finding have been reported. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) could also potentially have therapeutic properties that can be exploited to enhance radiotherapy outcome. In this study, investigations on the dose enhancement effects inflicted by SPIONs under irradiation with megavoltage photon beam radiotherapy were conducted. T24 human bladder cancer cell lines were pretreated with 1 mMol/L of SPION and irradiated with 6 MV and 10 MV photon beam at different doses.The non-treated cells irradiation was used as a control. Clonogenic assay was performed to determine the cell survival. Linear quadratic (LQ) model are used as fitting curve and does enhancement factors (DEF) were extrapolated from the curves. The cytotoxicity indicated cell growth normally after 72 hours and no long term cytotoxicity effects of SPIONs towards the cells were observed. The dose enhancement effects were observed for both 6 MV and 10 MV photon beam with DEF obtained 1.71 and 2.50, respectively. This reduction of cell colonies growth could be resulted from the interaction that induced free radical and reactive oxygen species (ROS) by megavoltage photon beams. The SPIONs were therefore act as multifunction nanoparticle both in diagnostic agent and radiotherapy as radiation dose enhancer, thus clearly qualified as future theranostic agents.

    Radiation Monitoring System aims to limit the exposure dose to personnel to the lowest level
    referring to the concept of ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). Atomic Energy Licensing
    (Basic Safety Radiation Protection) Regulations 2010 is useful to control employee and public
    radiation protection program and guideline. This paper discussed the methodology and
    implementation of the radiation protection program at PUSPATI TRIGA Reactor (RTP) which is
    implemented in Nuklear Malaysia, Complex Bangi.

    Pulse Shaping Amplifier (PSA) is an essential component in nuclear spectroscopy system. This
    amplifier has two functions; to shape the output pulse and performs noise filtering. In this paper,
    we describe the procedure for the design and development of a pulse shaping amplifier which can
    be used in a nuclear spectroscopy system. This prototype was developed using high performance
    electronics devices and assembled on a FR4 type printed circuit board. Performance of this
    prototype was tested by comparing it with an equivalent commercial spectroscopy amplifier (Model
    Silena 7611). The test results showed that the performance of this prototype was comparable
    to the commercial spectroscopic amplifier.

    Peroxide pre-vulcanized natural rubber latex prepared by using gamma irradiation technique is an alternative over the conventionally prepared peroxide pre-vulcanized that used activator to promote the peroxide decomposition in natural rubber latex. Through this technique the problems aroused by some activators such as tends to darken the natural rubber latex film during the drying process can also be overcome. For this preliminary study, data obtained from crosslink density and mechanical measurements were used to evaluate the effectiveness of gamma irradiation in the vulcanization process. Increasing the quantity of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHPO) from 0.1 pphr to 0.3 pphr while the irradiation dose maintain at 12 kGy has successfully delivered peroxide vulcanized natural rubber latex films with average tensile strength, modulus @ 500% and modulus @ 700% around 15.33, 1.01 and 3.42 MPa, respectively. The effective pre-vulcanization irradiation dose with respect to maximum crosslinking density (85.8 %) was observed on film prepared at 0.1 pphr t-BHPO.

    The Malaysian 1 MW TRIGA MARK II research reactor at Malaysian Nuclear Agency is designed to effectively implement the various fields of basic nuclear research, manpower training, and production of radioisotopes for their use in agriculture, industry, and medicine. This study deals with the calculation of neutron flux and power distribution in PUSPATI TRIGA REACTOR (RTP) 14th core configuration. The 3-D continuous energy Monte Carlo code MCNP was used to develop a versatile and accurate full model of the TRIGA core and fuels. The model represents in detailed all components of the core with literally no physical approximation. Continuous energy cross-section data from the more recent nuclear data as well as S (α, β) thermal neutron scattering functions distributed with the MCNP code were used. Results of calculations are analyzed and discussed.

    A 3.375 kJ plasma focus is designed to operate at 13.5 kV for studying X-ray source in Argon discharge. X-rays are detected by a film from the mammography radiographic plate using radiography technique. The feasibility of plasma focus as a high intensity flash X-ray radiation for a good contrast in radiography image is presented.

    In this paper a study on the relationship between axial speed va, radial shock speed vs, piston speed
    vp and pinch temperature with the variation of pressure P0 was carried out. The Lee’s 5 phase
    model code was used in this study by configuring the India Bhabha Atomic Research Center
    (BARC) plasma focus machine to operate in the pressure (P0) range from 1 Torr to 14 Torr. The
    relationships between these parameters were obtained as follows:

    Va ≈ 9Po-0.37, Vs ≈ 45P0-0.48, Vp ≈ 30P0-0.47 and Tpinch(max) ≈ 11P0-1

    This study was conducted to evaluatethe nitrogen use efficiency and 13C isotope discrimination of rice mutant lines viz.NMR151 and NMR152. Both cultivars are developed under rice radiation mutagenesis programme for adaptability to aerobic conditions. In the present study, NMR151 and NMR152 were grown under conditions of varying water potentials and nitrogen levels in a shade house. The rice mutant lines were planted on sandy loam soil. Three watering regimes and three nitrogen levels in a completely randomized design with three replications were carried out. The rice mutants were grown for 110 days under three water potentials, (i) Field capacity from 0 to 40 DAS and saturated from 41 to 110 DAS [ST], (ii) Field capacity from 0 to 110 DAS [FC], and (iii) Field capacity from 0 to 40 DAS and 70% of field capacity from 41 to 110 DAS [SS]. Direct 15N isotopic tracer method was used in this study, whereby the 15N labelled urea fertilizer 5.20% atom excess (a.e) was utilized as a tracer for nitroge nuse efficiency study (NUE)by the test crops. 15Nisotope presence in the samples was determined using emission spectrometry and percentage of total nitrogen was determined by the Kjeldahl method. 15N a.e values of the samples were used in the determination of the efficiency of N used by the mutant varieties. The 13C isotope discrimination (Δ13C) technique was used as a tool to identify drought resistance rice species with improves water use efficiency (WUE). WUE is the ratio of the biomass produced by the water consumed. For 13C discrimination analysis, a sample of rice leaf was analyzed for 13C content by using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS).The parameter, viz. plant height, number of tillers, grain yield, 1000 grain weight, NUE, Δ13Cand WUE were recorded. Results from this study showed nitrogen rates imparted significant effects on plant height, number of tillers, grain yield, 1000 grain weight and WUE, while water potentials had significant effects on plant height, grain yield, 1000 grain weight, NUE, Δ13Cand WUE. Δ13C has a low but significantly negative relationship with WUE. Rice mutants NMR151 and NMR152 were found to be not significantly different except for their NUE.

    The Malaysian’s PUSPATI TRIGA Reactor (RTP) achieved its initial criticality on June 28, 1982. The reactor is designed to effectively implement various fields of basic nuclear research, manpower training, and production of radioisotopes. Several past activities on neutronics modelling development and validation of the RTP were carried out using Monte Carlo Code MCNP. In this work, the developed model was used to characterise in-core and beam-ports irradiation facilities of the reactor. The thermal and fast neutron flux distributions in these facilities were determined using MCNP mesh tally method. It was found that the flux as well as its spectral characteristics depended very much on the position of the irradiation facility in the reactor core or in the beam-ports. The maximum neutron flux was found to be in the Central Thimble facility with 1.98E13 nv of thermal neutron. The thermal-to-total flux ratio varies significantly from 0.41 for the in-core facility, 0.58 in the reflector and up to 0.88 in the beam-ports.

    Non-destructive and real time method becomes a well-liked method to researchers in the oil palm
    industry since 2000. This method has the ability to detect oil content in order to increase the
    production of oil palm for better profit. Hence, this research investigates the potential of neutron
    source to estimate oil content in palm oil fruit since oil palm contains hydrogen with chemical
    formula C55H96O6. For this paper, oil palm loose fruit was being used and divided into three
    groups. These three groups are ripe, under-ripe and bruised fruit. A total of 21 loose fruit for each
    group were collected from a private plantation in Malaysia. Each sample was scanned using
    neutron backscattered technique. The higher neutron count, the more hydrogen content, and the
    more oil content in palm oil fruit. The best correlation result came from the ripe fruits with r2=0.98.
    This research proves that neutron backscattered technique can be used as a non-destructive and
    real time grading system for palm oil.

    A study has been carried out using a gamma-ray spectrometric system to determine the natural
    radioactivity level in bricks made from industrial waste and their associated radiation hazard.
    Brick-1 and brick-2 contained waste from coal power plant and granite industry, respectively. The
    leachability of radionuclides from these bricks was also investigated. The activity concentration
    values of 226Ra,
    228Ra,
    232Th, and 40K are 64.25, 63.15, 67.9 and 254.19 Bq/kg, respectively in brick-
    1, and 193, 164.48, 164.63 and 1348.75 Bq/kg, respectively in brick-2. The radiation hazard
    indexes such as radium equivalent activities (Raeq), representative level index (Iγr), external hazard
    index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin) were calculated and compared with the internationally
    approved values. Results indicate that brick-1 showed less radiological hazard than brick-2. This
    suggested that brick-1 could be used in building construction without exceeding the proposed
    criterion level.The leachability of 226Ra for bricks showed the activity concentration slightly
    exceeded 1 Bq/L which is the limit generally used for industrial wastewater.

    On March 11, 2011, a serious accident occurred in Daiichi nuclear reactor plant, Fukushima,
    Japan which caused radioactive materials been released into the atmosphere in the form of
    aerosols and dust particles. Sea water around the plant was also found contaminated with high
    radioactivity readings. These radioactive materials could be transported by the winds and ocean
    current across international borders and cannot be controlled by human. Thus, a continuous
    monitoring activity of radionuclide content in the air and sea water needs to be conducted by the
    authorities. In addition to radioactivity monitoring, Malaysia should also control the entry of
    contaminated food in order to prevent radionuclide ingestion by human. The radionuclide 131I,
    134Cs and 137Cs were used as a measure of pollution levels and counted with gamma spectrometry
    using standard analysis method suggested by AOAC International. In this paper, details description
    of the role of Radiochemical and Environment Group, Nuclear Malaysia who’s responsible in
    analyzing the radioactivity in the food samples due to Fukushima Daiichi, Japan accident was
    included. The radioactivity limit adopted and analysis results from this monitoring were discussed

    The particleboards were fabricated using Rhizophora spp. wood particles with particles size less than 74 μm. The corn starch was used as a bio-adhesive in the fabrication of Rhizophora spp. particleboards. The corn starch bonded particleboards were fabricated at 5% and 10% corn starch based on dry mass of Rhizophora spp. wood particles. The measurement of mass attenuation coefficients of the particleboards were made at low and intermediate photon energies. The mass attenuation coefficient at low photon energy was measured using X-ray fluorescent (XRF) configuration based on attenuation of Kα1 X-ray energies between 16.59 and 25.26 keV given by niobium, molybdenum, palladium and tin metal plates. The calculated mass attenuation coefficients of samples were compared to the theoretical values mass attenuation coefficients of water calculated using the photon cross-section database (XCOM). The results showed that mass attenuation coefficients of 10% corn starch added Rhizophora spp. particleboards were in good agreement of water within 7.96 and 4.94% for 5% and 10% corn starch Rhizophora spp. Particleboards, respectively compared to 14.57 and 16.16% in binderless Rhizophora spp. particleboards and raw Rhizophora spp. wood, respectively.

    IAEA Soil-6 is a reference material with a certified value for 226Ra fall between 69.6 – 93.4 Bq/kg at 95% confidence level. This material has been used as a sample and performed repeat measurement weekly between years 2006 – 2009 using a same gamma spectrometry system. The activity concentration of this material is calculated automatically using the operational commercial software and compared with activity obtained from the manual calculation. Study found that only 76.9%, 64.1%, 56.3%, and 79.3% of the results from the software calculation lie within the confidence level for year 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. However, u-score calculation revealed that 94.9 %, 89.7%, 79.2% and 84.9% data set have no significant bias (u < 2.58) for year 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. On the other hand, all manual calculation data were found to be within the 95 % confidence level. Factors suspected to cause differences between these two approaches were discussed here. Manually peak search, marking and calculation still remains as the preferred option for calculating the gamma radionuclides activity unless limitations of the spectrum analysis software, as described in this paper can be resolved/improved upon.

    Paper recycling plants usually buy their raw material from suppliers. More than often, bulk used paper supplied to the plant contains some significant quantity of water in its internal voids. It may be included intentionally or unintentionally. The price of used paper depends on its weight, thus adding water will help to increase weight and consequently increase the price. In this way, plant owner who purchase the used paper suffers a significant of financial lost. The objectives of our experiment are to establish a calibration curve that correlate between the amount of neutron backscattered and water content, and finally to develop a correction factor that need to be introduced to the measured values of water content. A fast neutron source (Am-Be 241) and a portable backscattering neutron detector were used for water measurement. The experiments were carried out by measuring neutron backscattering from used paper that has been added with different amount of water. As a result, a neutron calibration curve that provides a correlation between neutron backscattering and water content was established.

    The total mass attenuation coefficients (μ/ρ) of stainless steel (SS316L) and carbon steel (A516) that are widely used as petrochemical plant components, such as distillation column, heat exchanger, boiler and storage tank were measured at 662, 1073 and 1332 keV of photon energies. Measurements of radiation intensity for various thicknesses of steel were made by using transmission method. The γ-ray intensity were counted by using a Gamma spectrometer that contains a Hyper-pure Germanium (HPGe) detector connected with Multi Channel Analyzer (MCA). The effective numbers of atomic (Zeff) and electron (Neff) obtained experimentally were compared by those obtained through theoretical calculation. Both experimental and calculated values of Zeff and Neff were in good agreement.

    The objective of this study was to examine the mammographic breast density of women with breast cancer detected on voluntary mammographic screening at two selected screening centersin Malaysia.This was a retrospective study of Full-Field Digital Mammography(FFDM) images of150 Malaysian women with biopsy-proven breast cancer. The study population comprised 73 Malays(37.7%), 59 Chinese (39.3%) and 18 Indians (12.0%). The Tabár breast density Patterns(I -V) wereused to evaluate mammographic breast density. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results were compared with findings from a similar study on a group of 668 women who did not have breast cancer.The results showed that 44.7% of the study populationhad dense breasts (Patterns IV and V), 14.7% had predominantly fatty breasts (Patterns II and III) while 40.7% had Pattern I. The proportion of study populationwith dense breasts decreased with age. In conclusion, the proportion of women with dense breasts decreased with age. Majority of the women with cancer (44.7%) had dense breasts of Tabár Patterns IV and V, which has been associated with increased risk of breast cancer detected by voluntary mammographic screening. The results support the notion that increased breast density is a risk factor of breast cancer.

    In this paper, we report the dosimetry methodology used in the IAEA/WHO Thermoluminescent Dosimeter (TLD) Postal Dose Quality Audit Service and the results of 22 Malaysian radiotherapy centres participated in the audit from 2011 to 2015. Each participating centre was provided with a few sets of TLD capsule (two unit of TLD capsules to be irradiated and a control TLD in one set) as requested by the centres. The participating centres were asked to irradiate each TLD capsule at 2 Gy absorbed a dose to water under reference conditions i.e the TLD capsule is positioned at 10 cm depths in water, at central axis with 10 cm x 10 cm field size at 100 cm Source-Surface Distance or 100 cm Source-Axis Distance. In this period, a total of 70 photon beams consist of 43 beams and 27 beams produced by 6 MV and 10 MV photon beams, respectively have been audited. The results demonstrated that all participating centres comply with the acceptance limits of ± 5% as recommended by the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) Report 24, except eight photon beams from six centres. However, these centres presented better compliance results after being followed up with a second round of TLD irradiation.

    Laboratory radiotracer experiment was performed to study the bioaccumulation of 109Cd and 134Cs in the Malaysian common fish White seabass (Lates calcarifer). The aim of this study was to compare the biokinetics of uptake these two contrasting radionuclides by White seabass in laboratory condition scale. Experiments were designed to determine the processes controlling uptake of both radionuclides following exposure via seawater. In this study, the curve shapes of the uptake kinetic of 109Cd and 134Cs in White seabass were slightly linear and gradually increased with increasing of exposure time but were not reach equilibrium in the period of the study of 21 days. This phenomenon can be concluded that radioelement concentrations of 109Cd and 134Cs; and exposure duration of this experiment may not adequately to reach steady-state condition for uptake kinetic of those radioelements in White seabass. Furthermore, this was indicated that the uptake rate of 109Cd was 1.79 times faster than 134Cs due to some factors may probably influenced the output of this experiment such as different element accumulation strategies, physiological, behavior of radioelements, etc.

    Qualitative and quantitative analysis of samples require good judgment from the analysts. These two aspects in gamma spectrometric analysis of Proficiency Test and solid radioactive waste samples for the determination of radionuclides are discussed. It is vital to judge and decide what energy peaks belong to which radionuclides prior to the creation of customized radionuclide library for the analysis of specific samples. Corrections due to radionuclide decay and growth, and the half-life assigned to a particular radionuclide in the uranium and thorium series are also discussed. Discussion on judgment to confirm the presence of thorium in food samples based on gamma spectrometry and neutron activation analysis is also provided.
