METHODS: A randomised controlled trial involving 197 participants from three institutions was conducted. The control group attended a freestyle lecture on the gross anatomy of the heart, delivered by a qualified anatomist from each institution. The intervention group attended a CLT-bLM-based lecture on a similar topic, delivered by the same lecturer, three weeks thereafter. The lecturers had attended a CLT-bLM workshop that allowed them to prepare for the CLT-bLM-based lecture over the course of three weeks. The students' ratings on their cognitive engagement and internal motivation were evaluated immediately after the lecture using a validated Learners' Engagement and Motivation Questionnaire. The differences between variables were analysed and the results were triangulated with the focus group discussion findings that explored students' experience while attending the lecture.
RESULTS: The intervention group has a significantly higher level of cognitive engagement than the control group; however, no significant difference in internal motivation score was found. In addition, the intervention group reported having a good learning experience from the lectures.
CONCLUSION: The guideline successfully stimulated students' cognitive engagement and learning experience, which indicates a successful stimulation of students' germane resources. Stimulation of these cognitive resources is essential for successful cognitive processing, especially when learning a difficult subject such as anatomy.
METHODS: A total of 139 participants (plateletpheresis donors and normal controls) were recruited and divided into two groups: Group 1 participants who underwent tests for haemostatic and platelet indices and Group 2 participants who underwent tests for platelet activation markers using CD62P and PAC-1 monoclonal antibodies.
RESULTS: A significant mild shortening of prothrombin time and platelet activation were demonstrated (by increased CD62P and PAC-1 markers) among regular plateletpheresis donors as compared to healthy controls. The current pre-donation platelet count of plateletpheresis donors was significantly lower than their mean baseline platelet count obtained before their first plateletpheresis procedure. However, no significant differences were observed for the other platelet parameters (platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, activated partial thromboplastin time, protein C, protein S, antithrombin, and von Willebrand Factor antigen) between plateletpheresis donors and healthy controls.
CONCLUSION: This study concludes that regular plateletpheresis is a safe procedure. A possibility of mild platelet activation among regular donors requires further confirmation. However, pre-analytical platelet and FVII activations could occur in vitro contributing to these findings.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students of the School of Medical Sciences of USM. The proposed USM Medical Students' Guidance and Counselling Needs (USM-MSGCN) questionnaire is a self-administered instrument that consists of 68 initial items developed from the recommendation of medical students, counsellors, and lecturers in the medical education department. To determine the dimensionality (construct validity) and reliability of the questionnaire, exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha internal consistency reliability analysis were conducted.
RESULTS: A total of 208 students participated in the study. Factor analysis revealed that the items were not unidimensional; four potential constructs could be extracted from the questionnaire, namely, self-leadership (7 items), communication (5 items), learning (5 items), and psychological coping skills (3 items), with factor loading ranges of 0.56-0.82, 0.56-0.88, 0.65-0.84, and 0.79-0.80, respectively. These domains had the following internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha): 0.89, 0.90, 0.87, and 0.87, respectively; the overall alpha value was 0.93.
CONCLUSION: Four factors, with 20 items in the USM-MSGCN questionnaire had good validity and reliability values when administered among the pre-clinical medical students.
METHODS: We used an accelerometer to measure step count, metabolic equivalent task, level of intensity and vector magnitude during 20 min playing sessions. The playing space was standardised for each game to the size of a badminton court (i.e. 13.4 m in length and 6.1 m in width).
RESULTS: The results showed that three traditional Malaysian games, namely Galah Panjang, Bola Beracun and Baling Tin, fulfilled the requirements to be classified as moderate-to vigorous-intensity physical activity in terms of step count, metabolic equivalent task, heart rate and motions in all planes.
CONCLUSION: This study shows that playing traditional games for 20 min can increase physical activity among primary school students.
METHODS: A scoping review was performed to identify studies on CR training sessions for health educators. PubMed, SciVerse Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, EBSCO Medline Complete and ERIC databases were searched with terms including clinical reasoning, diagnostic reasoning, teacher and trainer, to identify articles published between 1991 and 2021.
RESULTS: The initial search yielded 6587 articles; after careful selection, n = 12 articles were included in this scoping review. Most CR training sessions were in the medical field, were conducted in North America, and involved clinical educators. The sessions focused on the fundamentals and steps of CR; biases and debiasing strategies; and learners' difficulties with various teaching formats, such as didactic presentations, facilitated small group sessions with case discussions, roleplay, and use of tools and a mobile application. Educators and students had positive perceptions regarding the conduct and effectiveness of the training sessions.
CONCLUSIONS: These training sessions were rated highly; however, longitudinal feedback regarding the application of learnt CR teaching strategies is necessary.
CASE 1: A 34-year-old lady who was admitted for pneumonia developed painful blurring of vision and redness in the right eye (RE) for one week. An examination of the RE revealed visual acuity (VA) of light perception (PL) with positive relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD), proptosis, and restriction of extraocular movement with hypopyon. The patient was treated for RE panophthalmitis with a lung abscess and was started on systemic and topical antibiotics. The vitreous tap culture grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. Despite treatment, the patient's condition deteriorated, and evisceration was undertaken.
CASE 2: A 38-year-old lady presented with a acute onset of RE pain associated with blurred vision and redness for two days, and fever for one week. RE VA was hand movement with a positive RAPD and anterior chamber cells of 2+. A B-scan revealed a dome-shaped subretinal mass with exudative retinal detachment. The patient was treated for RE panophthalmitis complicated by a basal ganglia abscess. The urine and vitreous tap cultures grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. She responded to high-dose intravenous and intravitreal antibiotics. Unfortunately, her RE became phthisical.
CASE 3: A 70-year-old lady presented with painless blurring of vision over the RE. The blood and urine cultures grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. RE VA was PL, and she was treated for endogenous endophthalmitis. The vitreous culture grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. Unfortunately, the RE became phthisical.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, single-blinded control trial was performed on eligible diabetic patients with full-thickness cavity wounds. Patients' demographics, size and site of wounds, and baseline routine blood investigations were recorded. The wounds were dressed every other day with Kelulut honey for the intervention group or gel for the control group. The wound size reduction and granulation tissue formation percentage were calculated every 6 days for 1 month.
RESULTS: Seventy-one patients were randomized. After 30 days of follow-up, 62 participants were available for analysis: 30 from the control group and 32 from the treatment group. The control group had increased granulation tissue at baseline and more wounds on the lower limb and posterior trunk. METHODS: Geometric morphometric (GM) analysis of mandibles from 400 dental panoramic tomography (DPT) specimens was conducted. The MorphoJ program was used to perform generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA), Procrustes ANOVA, principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant function analysis (DFA), and canonical variate analysis (CVA). In the tpsDig2 program, the 27 landmarks were applied to the DPT radiographs. Variations in mandibular size and form were categorized into four age groups: group 1 (15-24 years), group 2 (25-34 years), group 3 (35-44 years), and group 4 (45-54 years).
