    Nipah virus (NiV) is a re-emerging zoonotic pathogen that causes high mortality in humans and pigs. Oral immunization in free-roaming animals is one of the most practical approaches to prevent NiV pandemics. We previously generated a recombinant rabies viruses (RABV) Evelyn-Rokitnicki-Abelseth (ERA) strain, rERAG333E, which contains a mutation from arginine to glutamic acid at residue 333 of glycoprotein (G333E) and serves as an oral vaccine for dog rabies. In this study, we generated two recombinant RABVs, rERAG333E/NiVG and rERAG333E/NiVF, expressing the NiV Malaysian strain attachment glycoprotein (NiV-G) or fusion glycoprotein (NiV-F) gene based on the rERAG333E vector platform. Both rERAG333E/NiVG and rERAG333E/NiVF displayed growth properties similar to those of rERAG333E and caused marked syncytia formation after co-infection in BSR cell culture. Adult and suckling mice intracerebrally inoculated with the recombinant RABVs showed NiV-G and NiV-F expression did not increase the virulence of rERAG333E. Oral vaccination with rERAG333E/NiVG either singularly or combined with rERAG333E/NiVF induced significant NiV neutralizing antibody against NiV and RABV, and IgG to NiV-G or NiV-F in mice and pigs. rERAG333E/NiVG and rERAG333E/NiVF thus appeared to be suitable candidates for further oral vaccines for potential animal targets in endemic areas of NiV disease and rabies.

    Pea protein isolate (PPI) is a valued sustainable protein source, but its relatively poor functional properties limit its applications. This study reports on the effects of cold argon plasma (CP) treatment of a 15 % (w/w) PPI solution on the functionality, structure, and oxidative characteristics of PPI, as well as its application in 3D-printed plant-based meat. Results indicate that hydroxyl radicals and high-energy excited-state argon atoms are the primary active substances. A decrease in free sulfhydryl content and an increase in carbonyl content were observed in treated PPI, indicating oxidative modification. Compared to the control group, the gel strength of PPI was increased by 62.5 % and the storage modulus was significantly improved after 6 min treatment, forming a more ordered and highly cross-linked 3D gel network. Additionally, CP significantly improved the water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity, emulsifying activity, and emulsion stability of PPI. The α-helix and random coil content in PPI decreased, while the β-sheet content increased, resulting in a more ordered secondary structure after CP treatment. Compared to untreated PPI, the consistency coefficient (K) increased from 36.00 to 47.68 Pa·sn. The treated PPI exhibited higher apparent viscosity and storage modulus and demonstrated better 3D printing performance and self-supporting ability. This study demonstrates that CP can significantly enhance the functional properties of PPI, providing great potential and prospects for improving the printability of 3D printing materials and developing plant protein foods with low-allergenicity.

    Dengue is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by dengue virus (DENV) infection and transmitted byAedesmosquitoes. Approximately 50-100 million people are infected with DENV each year, resulting in a high economic burden on both governments and individuals. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize information regarding the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and serotype distribution and risk factors for global dengue outbreaks occurring from 1990 to 2015. We searched the PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases through December 2016 using the term "dengue outbreak." In total, 3,853 studies were identified, of which 243 studies describing 262 dengue outbreaks met our inclusion criteria. The majority of outbreak-associated dengue cases were reported in the Western Pacific Region, particularly after the year 2010; these cases were primarily identified in China, Singapore and Malaysia. The pooled mean age of dengue-infected individuals was 30.1 years; of the included patients, 54.5% were male, 23.2% had DHF, 62.0% had secondary infections, and 1.3% died. The mean age of dengue patients reported after 2010 was older than that of patients reported before 2010 (34.0 vs. 27.2 years); however, the proportions of patients who had DHF, had secondary infections and died significantly decreased after 2010. Fever, malaise, headache, and asthenia were the most frequently reported clinical symptoms and signs among dengue patients. In addition, among the identified clinical symptoms and signs, positive tourniquet test (OR= 4.86), ascites (OR= 13.91) and shock (OR= 308.09) were identified as the best predictors of dengue infection, DHF and mortality, respectively (bothP< 0.05). The main risk factors for dengue infection, DHF and mortality were living with uncovered water container (OR= 1.65), suffering from hypotension (OR= 6.18) and suffering from diabetes mellitus (OR= 2.53), respectively (allP< 0.05). The serotype distribution varied with time and across WHO regions. Overall, co-infections were reported in 47.7% of the evaluated outbreaks, and the highest pooled mortality rate (2.0%) was identified in DENV-2 dominated outbreaks. Our study emphasizes the necessity of implementing programs focused on targeted prevention, early identification, and effective treatment.
