AIMS: To compare TEWL and skin hydration in patients with DM and controls, and to investigate associations between TEWL and skin hydration with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), treatment, peripheral neuropathy (PN) and age in patients with diabetes.
METHODS: This was a prospective, case-control study carried out at a tertiary medical centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. TEWL and skin hydration measurements were taken at six different body sites in both groups.
RESULTS: In total, 146 patients (73 cases, 73 controls) were included (24 men and 49 women in each group). No significant difference in TEWL or skin hydration was seen between patients with DM and controls, but there were significant reductions in skin hydration in patients with DM who had FBS > 7 mmol/L (P 6.5% (P 1 U/kg/day (P 45 years old, there was a significant reduction in TEWL (P = 0.04) and hydration (P 8 mmol/L and increased in patients with higher insulin requirement.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to report the frequency of liver disease among psoriasis patients, describe the clinical features, treatment modalities and quality of life.
METHODS: This was a multi-center cross-sectional study of psoriasis patients notified to the Malaysian Psoriasis Registry (MPR) from January 2007 to December 2018.
RESULTS: Of 21,735 psoriasis patients, 174 (0.8%) had liver disease. The three most common liver diseases were viral hepatitis (62.1%), fatty liver (14.4%) and liver cirrhosis (10.9%). The male-to-female ratio was 3.8:1. Mean age of onset of psoriasis was higher in those with liver disease compared to those without (37.25 ± 13.47 years vs 33.26 ± 16.96 years, p 10% and/or DLQI > 10) (59.3%vs49.9%, p = 0.027), psoriatic arthropathy (21.1%vs13.0%, p = 0.002), and nail involvement (78.2%vs56.1%, p
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of NPT in scaffolding dermatological learning among preclinical-year medical students.
METHODS: Near-peer teachers who are content experts in dermatology taught alongside conventional teaching with lecturers. We employed five quiz questions before and after the case launch lecture, where students were first exposed to dermatology. We also invited students to provide feedback using a questionnaire on NPT in dermatology at the end of the case 8 teaching week.
RESULTS: In total, 74 students participated in the pre- and post-lecture quiz questions, and 47 completed feedback. There was overwhelmingly positive feedback towards NPT, and various learning theories can help explain the success of this project.
CONCLUSIONS: Preclinical students enjoy dermatological teaching with the involvement of suitable near-peers. With the professional barrier removed, students can better relate to near-peers (and vice versa). Helping students understand the relevance of dermatology in the clinical setting at an early stage and adopting learning tools such as mnemonics, summary tables, comparison tables and mapping teaching with the learning curriculum clearly helped students learn about dermatology.
