Aim: This retrospective study aims to compare the postgraduate thesis characteristics from various sources in the field of radiology.
Methods: This was a retrospective study evaluating data that is publicly available online and at libraries and institutional review board approval, as such, was not demanded. We selected 40 published theses from the library of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi Medical University in Vietnam which graduated from 2008 to 2018. Of these, there were 10 PhD, 10 specialists II, 10 master's, and 10 residency theses selected.
Results: A total of 40 theses were analyzed from participants with a median age of 36.5. The male/female ratio was 23/17. Most of the theses were subspecialty in diagnostic radiology (87.5%) and focused on pathological radiology (95%). Adult patients were the major objectives of the theses accounted for 87.5% with predominant materials of magnetic resonance imaging counted for 47.5%. Theses in PhD group were the largest items regarding the total number of pages as well as the number of figures, and the number of references. Nonetheless, both domestic and international publications related to all theses were truly low.
Conclusion: The postgraduate thesis of radiology in Vietnam has many different forms but mainly focuses on diagnostic and pathological radiology with materials of magnetic resonance imaging in adults. The number of international publications regarding the thesis was very small.
METHODS: This observational study was conducted at the Emergency Department of Sulaymaniyah General Teaching Hospital and Shar Hospital from September 1st, 2014 to August 31st, 2015. Fifty patients who developed acute spontaneous hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and 50 patients who developed acute non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were included in the study. All patients underwent resting 12-lead ECG within half an hour of admission. The QTc interval was calculated and analyzed in those 100 patients.
RESULTS: Females (62%) outnumbered males (38%) with a female to male ratio of 1.6:1. Forty percent of the patients were between 60-69 years of age. Hypertension was seen in 82% of patients while left ventricular hypertrophy was documented in 40% of patients. The QTc was prolonged in 38 patients (17 patients in the ICH group and 21 patients in the SAH group). In both groups, males demonstrated QTc prolongation more than females. However, there were no statistically significant gender difference between both groups and within the same group. There was a statistically significant association between SAH and QTc prolongation (p-value<0.001); the ICH group did not demonstrate any significant relationship with QTc prolongation.
CONCLUSION: Prolongation in the QTc interval was "statistically" associated with acute SAH only. No gender difference was noted; whether this observation is clinically significant or not, it needs further analytic studies.
AIM: To present a case of extradural temporal bone chondroblastoma and discuss the clinical presentation, radiographic findings, histology and particularly the surgical management of the case.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 31-year-old man who presented with a painless left temporal swelling and left sided hearing loss for four months. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an aggressive mass involving the left preauricular region with temporal mastoid bone erosion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an extra-axial left temporal mastoid mass pushing the left temporal lobe superiorly. The patient underwent complete excision of the temporal bone tumor. The final histopathological diagnosis was in keeping with chondroblastoma.
CONCLUSION: Temporal bone chondroblastoma is rare but an aggressive condition. Complete tumor resection via an appropriate approach that enables adequate exposure will lead to a favorable outcome.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify and compare photoaging rat models exposed to UVA and UVB.
METHODS: This research method compared macroscopic (scoring degree of wrinkling) and microscopic (histology) signs and symptoms on skin samples of rat exposed to UVA and UVB for 4 weeks at a radiation dose of 840mJ/cm2.
RESULTS: The results of this study indicated that the degree of wrinkling was highest in rat skin exposed to UVB rays by 51% (p<0.05). UVB histological results showed that the epidermis layer (40 µm, p<0.05) was thickened and the dermis layer (283 µm, p<0.05) was thinned in the skin of mice exposed to UVB light. The UVB group, showed the density of collagen in the dermis with a mean value of 55% (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that short-term exposure to UVB radiation (in the acute, subacute or subchronic phase) induces more rapid and pronounced damage to rat skin when compared to UVA radiation exposure.
