A case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the minor salivary glands of then nasal cavity is reported. The tumour had spread locally and by perineural spread to the internal auditory mentus, causing facial nerve palsy.
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the commonest presentation of head and neck cancers in Malaysia, especially in the Chinese. The standard treatment is radical radiotherapy to the post-nasal space and the neck. Chemotherapy is given to patients with primary advanced disease and to patients with recurrence. The study reviews results of chemotherapy given to 33 patients at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, over the last four years.
In children, congenital deafness presents not infrequently. The majority of cases are sensorineural in nature and congenital conductive deafness is far less common. The causes range from abnormalties and fixation of ossicles, ankylosed malleo-incudal joint and absence of one or more ossicles. We describe a case of congenital ossicular abnormality, presenting with conductive deafness.
Tracheal tears are not as uncommon as initially thought. The resultant insufficiency and hypoxia can be life-threatening. The keystone in management is early recognition and diagnosis. Immediate surgical repair is essential.
Mandibular resection, following surgery for tumor or osteoradionecrosis, leaves a patient with a swallowing, speech, and cosmetic disability. Repair of the oromandibular defect is difficult and various prostheses and grafts have been used and reported. The most popular form of mandibular reconstruction is the use of the free, vascularized bone transfer. We report our experience with the free vascularized fibula bone transfer in eight patients.
