    Cervical cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in women worldwide. Persistent infection with a human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause for cervical cancer. Vaccination and Pap smear screening are the best methods for prevention of the disease. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess the knowledge and views of upper secondary school female students in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, toward prevention of cervical cancer. This study was conducted from April 2009 to September 2009 in 8 schools in Kuala Lumpur area using pre-tested and validated questionnaires. Results indicated that the respondents had low knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention although the majority of students (80.4%) had heard about the disease. The level of knowledge of cervical cancr and its prevention was significantly higher among students from the science stream (p<0.001) compared to students from the art stream. Most students (69.3%) agreed to take the vaccination if the service was available in schools. A high percentage of students (82.2%) agreed that the vaccination should be compulsory to the students. In conclusion, most students had low knowledge of cervical cancer and its prevention but they had positive attitude toward vaccination and agreed that vaccination should be compulsory. Therefore, suitable educational programmes should be developed to improve the knowledge of secondary school students on the prevention of cervical cancer.

    Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in women in peninsular Malaysia and very prevalent worldwide. HPV vaccination and routine Pap smear testing are the best preventive measures. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge level of secondary school students from Sarawak, East Malaysia regarding cervical cancer and its prevention. Multistage random sampling with various methods in each step was employed to select the sample of 76 students. Results showed that 61.8% had poor knowledge level of cervical cancer and its prevention. There were 60.5% of students who were aware of cervical cancer with Chinese and form four students showing significantly the highest awareness (p<0.05). The main source of cervical cancer information was from their parents (25.9%). HPV vaccination acceptance among students was 22.3% and an association was found between knowledge of cervical cancer with race and HPV vaccination acceptance (p<0.05). In conclusion, the students had poor knowledge level of cervical cancer, its prevention and HPV vaccination acceptance. More efforts should be made to improve cervical cancer knowledge and awareness of the public especially secondary school students in Sarawak. This in turn will enhance the practice of prevention against cervical cancer among students.

    BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the third most common cancer among men in Peninsular Malaysia. However, no information is available about the prognostic factors. The objective of this study was to identify factors with an influence on outcome in patients treated in Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

    METHODS: A total of 159 patients with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated during 2002-2003 in Hospital Kuala Lumpur were included in this study. All received radiotherapy. Fifty three patients were treated with radiotherapy alone, while 106 patients received combination chemotherapy. Overall survival and local recurrence-free survival were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and univariate analysis was performed using the log-rank test.

    RESULTS: This study found out that 5-year overall survival and 5-year local recurrence-free survival rates were 58.6% and 54.2% respectively. The stage specific 5-year overall survival rates were: Stage I, 100%; Stage II; 93.3%, Stage III, 62.7%; Stage IVA, 42.2%; and Stage IVB, 40.6%. On univariate analysis, gender (p<0.05), T-classification (p<0.001), N-classification (p<0.05), stage (p<0.05) and cranial nerve involvement (p<0.001) were found to be significant prognostic factors for 5-year overall survival, while gender (p<0.05) and N-classification (p<0.05) were significant prognostic factors for 5-year local recurrence-free survival.

    CONCLUSION: The overall survival rate of patients for this study was low. The patient factor that significantly affected 5-year overall survival was gender, while disease factors were stage, T-classification, N-classification and cranial nerve involvement.

    6-Chloro-2-Aryl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives 1-26 were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. All these derivatives were evaluated for their antiglycation, antioxidant and β-glucuronidase potential followed their docking studies. In antiglycation assay, compound 2 (IC50=240.10±2.50μM) and 4 (IC50=240.30±2.90μM) was found to be most active compound of this series, while compounds 3 (IC50=260.10±2.50μM), 6 (IC50=290.60±3.60μM), 13 (IC50=288.20±3.00μM) and 26 (IC50=292.10±3.20μM) also showed better activities than the standard rutin (IC50=294.50±1.50μM). In antioxidant assay, compound 1 (IC50=69.45±0.25μM), 2 (IC50=58.10±2.50μM), 3 (IC50=74.25±1.10μM), and 4 (IC50=72.50±3.30μM) showed good activities. In β-glucuronidase activity, compounds 3 (IC50=29.25±0.50μM), compound 1 (IC50=30.10±0.60μM) and compound 4 (IC50=46.10±1.10μM) showed a significant activity as compared to than standard D-Saccharic acid 1,4-lactonec (IC50=48.50±1.25μM) and their interaction with the enzyme was confirm by docking studies.

    Twenty five 4, 6-dichlorobenzimidazole derivatives (1-25) have been synthesized and evaluated against β-glucuronidase inhibitory activity. The compounds which actively inhibit β-glucuronidase activity have IC50 values ranging between 4.48 and 46.12 μM and showing better than standard d-saccharic acid 1,4 lactone (IC50=48.4 ± 1.25 μM). Molecular docking provided potential clues to identify interactions between the active molecules and the enzyme which further led us to identify plausible binding mode of all the benzimidazole derivatives. This study confirmed that presence of hydrophilic moieties is crucial to inhibit the human β-glucuronidase.

    4-Methylbenzimidazole 1-28 novel derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their antiglycation and antioxidant activities. Compounds 1-7 and 11 showed excellent activities ranged 140-280 μM, better than standard drug rutin (294.46 ± 1.50 μM). Compound 1-28 were also evaluated for DPPH activities. Compounds 1-8 showed excellent activities, ranging 12-29 μM, better than standard drug n-propylgallate (IC50 = 30.30 ± 0.40 μM). For superoxide anion scavenging activity, compounds 1-7 showed better activity than standard n-propylgallate (IC50 = 106.34 ± 1.6 μM), ranged 82-104 μM. These compounds were found to be nontoxic to THP-1 cells.
