Methods: Ten males recreational runners were randomised to three running trials with a 1 week recovery period between the trials. Each trial involved running at 75% maximum heart rate (HRmax) for 1 h, followed by a 15 min time trial. The participants used a CHO mouth rinse, placebo (PLA) solution or control (CON, no solution) every 15 min during the exercise. Heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and mood states were recorded pre-, during and post-exercise. Saliva samples were collected pre-, post- and 1 h post-exercise.
Results: There was no significant interaction and time effect (P > 0.05) on the salivary lysozyme concentration and running performance, but it was significant (P < 0.05) for HR and RPE (increase in all trials). However, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in salivary lysozyme concentrations, running performances, HR values or RPE between the trials. Mood states were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between the trials, but one of the mood sub-scales showed a significant (P < 0.001) time effect (increase fatigue in all trials).
Conclusion: CHO mouth rinsing did not affect physiological parameters, salivary lysozyme concentrations, mood states or running performance among recreational runners.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of the UDP in the last 6 wk of rehabilitation.
DESIGN: Pre-post study with 2-tailed paired t tests for limited a priori comparisons to examine differences.
SETTING: National Sports Institute of Malaysia.
PARTICIPANTS: 24 Malaysian national athletes.
INTERVENTIONS: 7 sessions/wk of 90 min with 3 sessions allocated for 5 or 6 UDP exercises.
MAIN OUTCOMES: Significant improvements for men and women were noted. Tests included 20-m sprint, 1-repetition-maximum single-leg press, standing long jump, single-leg sway, and a psychological questionnaire.
RESULTS: For men and women, respectively, average strength improvements of 22% (d = 0.96) and 29% (d = 1.05), sprint time of 3% (d = 1.06) and 4% (d = 0.58), and distance jumped of 4% (d = 0.59) and 6% (d = 0.47) were noted. In addition, athletes reported improved perceived confidence in their abilities. All athletes improved in each functional test except for long jump in 2 of the athletes. Mediolateral sway decreased in 18 of the 22 athletes for the injured limb.
CONCLUSION: The prevention training with UDP resulted in improved conditioning and seems to decrease mediolateral sway.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 42 male competitive basketball players. Subjects were divided into the injured and uninjured groups based on self-reported questionnaires. Ankle range of motion (ROM) was measured using a goniometer, ankle isokinetic strength testing performed using Biodex System 4 PRO, and single-leg stability tests performed using Biodex Balance System SD.
RESULTS: Between the injured and uninjured ankles, there was a decrease in plantarflexion ROM (44.89±6.85 vs. 50.75±9.31, P<0.05) and an increase in eversion ROM (14.50±5.63 vs. 11.74±4.53, P<0.05). There was a reduction in inversion and plantarflexion strength at 30°/s peak torque and 120 °/s peak torque (P<0.05). However, no significant difference observed in the postural stability indexes between the two groups.
CONCLUSIONS: This study proves that there are residual ROM and strength deficits after an ankle sprain, however, these deficits do not affect their balance ability.
METHODS: Thirty university badminton players aged from 19 to 22 years old were randomly divided equally into two groups, where the probiotic group (PG; n = 15) received a drink that contained Lactobacillus casei Shirota (3 × 1010 CFU) and placebo group (CG; n = 15) a placebo drink for six weeks. Anxiety, stress and mood levels were determined using the CSAI-2R, PSS and BRUMS questionnaires, respectively. Fitness levels were measured using by subjecting the players to 20-m shuttle runs (aerobic capacity), handgrips (muscular strength), vertical jumps (leg power), 40-m dash (speed) and T-test (agility). The Student's t-test (p < 0.05) was used to determine the differences between PG and CG players.
RESULTS: After six weeks, the anxiety and stress levels of PG players significantly decreased by 16% (p < 0.001) and 20% (p < 0.001), respectively, but there were no significant changes detected in CG players. Supplementation of probiotics also improved aerobic capacity in PG players by 5.9% (p < 0.001) but did not influence the speed, strength, leg power and agility.
CONCLUSIONS: Probiotics supplementation showed improved aerobic capacity and relieve anxiety and stress. However, further studies need to be carried out to determine the mechanisms through which probiotic intake produces these effects.
