    Cucullanus sp. is a genus of nematode infecting Barbonymus schwanenfeldii. It is categorized under Family Cucullunidae. The genus Cucullanus sp consists of various species around the world, parasitizing freshwater, brackish-water or marine fishes. Cucullanus sp are mainly found in internal organs like stomach, intestine, kidney, and spleen. This parasitic organism can cause an economic impact, especially for animals with high market value, which are commercialized and used for human consumption. The objectives of this study are to study the morphological characteristics of Cucullanus sp and to identify genus of Cucullanus sp which are found on tinfoil barb, Barbonymus schwanenfeldii at Kenyir Lake, Terengganu. There is not enough data on Cucullanus sp on B. schwanenfeldii. Six samples of tinfoil barb were collected at Kenyir Lake from 25 to 27 October 2018. Each sample of fish was measured and recorded for length and weight using ruler and weighing balance respectively. The fish were examined at camping site at Lawit Resort, Kenyir Lake. The nematode species found were brought back to Health of Aquatic Organism laboratory. The abdominal and gastrointestinal tracts of the fishes were dissected and placed in petri dishes. The nematodes found were collected and observed under the dissecting microscope. The nematode specimen was placed on a glass slide with a drop of lactophenol and observed under the compound microscope fitted with dino-eye. The sample was later fixed with 70% alcohol. The morphological characteristic was drawn using camera lucida fitted to a compound microscope. (40X magnification). The picture of nematode was captured by using Advanced Research Microscope (Nikon Eclipse 80i) and measurements of the nematode was also made. Hence, the nematode found was identified as male Cucullanus sp.

    The central coast of Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with other regions, was severely hit by the tsunami on 26 December 2004. A strange spawning behaviour of the Indian horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus gigas, Müller) was observed after the tsunami disturbance. Along the northeast coast of India, the horseshoe crabs normally migrate towards the shore in large numbers coinciding with the tidal height and grain size of the sediment and spawn in nests made in sand. The spawning behaviour was normal until November 2004 and throughout that period about 35 to 45 nests in 200 m2 of area of the breeding beach were examined. However, no nesting was observed from December 2004 to March 2005, i.e. after the occurrence of tsunami. The number of nests per 200 m2 of area (~82) and the number of eggs per nest (750-1000 eggs) were increased considerably when the normal conditions were restored in April 2005. The absence of spawning migration, from December 2004 to March 2005, is totally an unusual behaviour and this happened for the first time during the past several years of the study period.

    In February 2013, forty-seven Notched threadfin bream, the Nemipterus peronii, were sampled from the eastern coastal waters of the South China Sea. The concentration of various elements, namely cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), strontium (Sr), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), Lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), iron (Fe), and Zinc (Zn) were analyzed in the liver, muscle, and kidney organs of the host, as well as in their parasites Hysterothalycium reliquens (nematode) and the Paraphilometroides nemipteri (nematode), using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The former group of parasites showed highest accumulation capacity for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Ni, and Zn while the latter group had high accumulation potential of As, Hg, Cd, Al, Pb, and Sr. The divergence in heavy-metal accumulation profiles of both nematodes is linked with the specificity of microhabitats, cuticle morphology, and interspecific competition. The outcome of this study indicates that both parasite models can be used for biomonitoring of metal pollution in marine ecosystems.

    Snapper had been cultured in Malaysia since 1980 due to the fry availability and the high demand. However, details on the caligids infestation were not properly documented. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence, mean intensity and site preference of Caligus rotundigenitalis (Caligidae, Siphonostomatoida) a parasitic copepod on cage cultured crimson snapper, Lutjanus erythropterus from Bukit Tambun, Penang, Malaysia. A total of 70 specimens of cultured snapper were examined based on different infestation sites such as head, body as well as operculum. The specimens were separated into three groups according to the size of the fish. C. rotundigenitalis was found to be the only species infesting L. erythropterus with the prevalence and the mean intensity of 81.4% and 5.6±4.4, respectively. There was a significant difference between the prevalence of site infestation of the body and inner operculum sites. The prevalence of C. rotundigenitalis was highest on inner operculum of the fish followed by the body and head. However, there was no significant difference in the distribution of C. rotundigenitalis over the different infestation sites derived from the three groups. The information obtained from this study can be used for more effective control measures of ectoparasitic copepod infestation in floating cages.

    Gracilaria species are red marine macroalgae that are found abundantly in Malaysia. Gracilaria changii from Morib, Selangor, G. nanilaensis and Gracilaria sp. from Gelang Patah, Johor were used in this study. Five compounds were successfully isolated and identified as hexadecanoic acid (1), cholest-5-en-3-ol (2), 2-hydroxymyristic acid (3), cholesteryl myristate (4) and 1-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-3-(2",4",6"-trihydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxypropanone (5) based on spectral data analysis (IR, UV, GC-MS, 'H NMR, "C NMR, HMQC and HMBC). All compounds isolated were tested for cytotoxicity (MTT assay for HL-60 and MCF-7 cell lines), and antibacterial (disc diffusion method), antioxidant (DPPH free radical scavenging assay and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assay) and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory (AChE) activity (TLC bioautographic method). Compounds I and 3 exhibited strong cytotoxic activity against HL-60 and MCF-7 cell lines. Compound 5 showed high antioxidant activity in both the DPPH free radical scavenging and xanthine oxidase inhibition assays. Compound I showed positive activity for AChE inhibitory with a minimum inhibition dose of 0.625 tg sample. All compounds demonstrated antibacterial activity producing 8 to 14 mm inhibition zones. A positive control was applied to all bioassays and experiments were performed with three replicates. Results demonstrated that three edible red seaweeds are rich sources of bioactive compounds with potential application for pharmaceutical purposes.
