    Introduction: Increased nociceptive responses were shown in the offspring of prenatally stressed rats. Reports have demonstrated the anti-nociceptive effects of Tualang honey in the rat offspring. The present study was done to de- termine whether the modulation of nociceptive behaviour by Tualang honey was mediated by modulating changes in the histology, oxidative stress parameters and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the thalamus of the rat offspring. Methods: Eighteen Sprague Dawley pregnant rats were randomly assigned to control (C), stress (S) and stress-treated with Tualang honey (SH) groups. Stress was given in a form of restraint stress.Tualang honey was given to SH group from first day of pregnancy until delivery. Thirty-three adult male offspring were subjected to formalin test before they were sacrificed. Nociceptive behaviour score, number of neurons, level of oxidative stress parameters and NMDA receptors in the thalamus were analysed by using one-way ANOVA.     Introduction: Bioethics subject which is part of the curriculum in higher education has a slightly different orientation compared to the science subjects. This study investigates the challenges of teaching bioethics subject to the health sciences students and the outcome of using mixed educational background classes in bioethics. Methods: Discussions among lecturers of bioethics were conducted to determine the possible challenges when teaching bioethics to the health sciences students who are accustomed to the format of science subjects. Results of written bioethics tests (multiple choice questions [MCQs] versus short essays) were also analysed among students from nine different health sciences background (biomedical sciences, nursing, speech pathology, dietetics, nutrition, medical radiation, audiology, sports science, and occupational safety and health) as a measure of the students’ understanding of the bioethics subject. Findings: The challenges of bioethics teaching were divided into five categorical themes; (i) attitude/discipline, (ii) background knowledge, (iii) reasoning/critical thinking, (iv) knowledge/jargon, and (v) diverse educational background. Excellence performances were demonstrated by the students across the ten disciplines in the direct MCQs while they did very poorly (p < 0.01) in the critical thinking short essay questions. Conclusions: Bioethics proof to be a challenging subject for the health sciences students as this subject deal with complex issues of ethical concerns which differ with most science subjects. Combined efforts of the educators and students are needed in order to address these challenges and stimulate the understanding of bioethics.

    Induction of c-fos in the spinal cord due to pain is well established. This study aims to look at the effects of acute swim stress on Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) induced by formalin and how it is modulated by ketamine and morphine. Acutely-stressed and non-stressed adult male Sprague Dawley rats were pretreated with intraperitoneal injection of ketamine 5 mg/kg (Ketava, Atlantic Lab), morphine 10 mg/kg (Rhotard, Custom Pharmaceutical), or saline, 5 minutes prior to experimentation. Rats were acutely stressed by swimming for 3 min in 20 degrees C water. Dilute formalin (Formaldehyde, Merck) was injected to the hindpaw and the formalin score recorded. Rats were then sacrificed and spinal cords (L4-L5) removed for immunohistochemical analysis of FLI. Two-way ANOVA showed significant effects of stress, drug and stress-drug interactions in formalin test and FLI. Both morphine and ketamine produced analgesia in the formalin test. In the saline stressed group, FLI was suppressed on the ipsilateral side (p<0.01) but increased on the contralateral side (p<0.01) compared with non-stressed saline. In morphine and ketamine stressed groups, FLI was increased on both ipsilateral and contralateral sides for morphine (ipsilateral: p<0.05; contralateral: p<0.001) and ketamine (ipsilateral: p<0.05, contralateral: p<0.05) compared with their corresponding non-stressed groups. In conclusion, presence of stress may lead to discrepancy between behavioural manifestation of pain and c-fos induction in the spinal cord.
