    Laparoscopic retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy (LRPN) is a technically demanding kidney surgery due to the limited space and unfamiliar approach in the retroperitoneal space. The aim of this study is to review the outcome of our initial experience in performing this procedure. All patients who underwent LRPN between 2019 to 2022 were included in this retrospective review. A total of 23 patients underwent LRPN. The mean operating time was 178±43 minutes and mean warm ischemia time was 20±5 minutes. The average estimated blood lost was 89±68ml and the mean postoperative hospital stay was 3.6±0.8 days. Two patients (11.1%) had positive margin and no local recurrence was seen after mean follow up of 15.8±12.0 months. Our initial experience on LRPN showed promising results to perform partial nephrectomy safely and effectively.

    Conventional techniques of varicocele repair are associated with substantial risks of hydrocele formation, ligation of the testicular artery, and varicocele recurrence. The advantages of the microscopic approach to varicocele repairs are detailed identification and preservation of the vascular structures. In this study, our purpose is to review the outcome of all patients that underwent microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy with the video telescopic operating microscope (VITOM). Hence, a retrospective review of 23 varicocele patients who underwent microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy at the center from the year 2019 until 2021 was done. They, ranging between 18 to 58 years of age, comprising one case of right varicocele, fifteen cases of left varicocele, and seven cases of bilateral varicocele, were all having symptoms (pain and swelling) and clinically palpable varicocele. Ultrasounds were done to confirm the diagnosis and measure the testicular size. The surgery was performed by a single surgeon, under spinal anesthesia. The operation was performed using the VITOM telescope system, with an average operative time of one hour. The patients were followed-up at one month postoperatively to review the wound and symptoms. Phone call evaluations of all 23 patients were done to detect any recurrence or complications. All patients were discharged one day after surgery. Post-operative, all of them have a well-formed scar at the previous subinguinal region incision wound during the clinic visits. None of the 23 patients reported with varicocele recurrence, testicular pain, hydrocele formation or sexual dysfunction. The previous testicular pain or discomfort they encountered prior to the surgery was resolved as well. In conclusion, microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy using the VITOM telescope is feasible and could achieve good outcomes.

    Anaerobic co-digestion (co-AD) of agro-industrial waste, namely, palm oil mill effluent (POME) and sugarcane vinasse (Vn), with water hyacinth (WH) as co-substrate was carried out in two separate Anaerobic Suspended Growth Closed Bioreactors (ASGCBs) under thermophilic (55 °C) conditions. The highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) and soluble COD reduction in co-AD of POME-WH (78.61%, 78.86%) is slightly higher than co-AD of Vn-WH (75.75%, 78.24%). However, VFA reduction in co-AD of POME-WH (96.41%) is higher compared to co-AD of Vn-WH (85.94%). Subsequently, biogas production peaked at 13438 mL/day values and 16122 mL/day for co-AD of POME-WH and Vn-WH, respectively. However, the methane content was higher in the co-AD of POME-WH (72.04%) than in the co-AD of Vn-WH (69.86%). Growth yield (YG), maximum specific substrate utilization rate (rx,max) and maximum specific biomass growth rate (μmax) are higher in co-AD of POME-WH, as supported by the higher mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) and COD reduction efficiency compared to co-AD of Vn-WH. However, methane yield ([Formula: see text]) reported in the co-AD of POME-WH and Vn-WH are 0.2748 and 0.3112 L CH4/g CODreduction, respectively, which suggests that WH is a more suitable co-substrate for Vn compared to POME.
