    Haemonchosis is a common problem on goat farms in tropical countries such as Malaysia. Prevention of production losses generally depends on the use of anthelmintic drugs, but is threatened by the emergence of anthelmintic resistance. This study investigates anthelmintic efficacy on small-scale Malaysian goat farms and describes putative risk factors. Adult goats had moderate to high pre-treatment faecal trichostrongyle egg counts, despite being housed on slatted floors and fed on cut-and-carry forage, raising questions about the source of nematode infection. Our results show multiple resistance to benzimidazole and macrocyclic lactone anthelmintic drugs and allow us to discuss the genetic origins of resistance with reference to farm husbandry and management. We conclude that improvement in Malaysian goat production efficiency will require the development of sustainable helminth control strategies, underpinned by a better understanding of the origins and population genetics of anthelmintic resistance.

    A number of genetic risk factors have been implicated in the development of neonatal severe hyperbilirubinaemia. This includes mutations in the uridine glucoronosyl transferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) gene which is responsible for unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in Gilbert's Syndrome. We studied the prevalence of UGT1A1 gene mutations in a group of Malay neonates to determine whether they are risk factors to severe neonatal jaundice. One hundred and twenty-five Malay neonates with severe hyperbilirubinemia were studied. Ninety-eight infants without severe hyperbilirubinaemia were randomly selected from healthy Malay term infants (controls). DNA from EDTA cord blood samples were examined for UGT1A1 mutations nt211G > A and nt247T > C using established Taqman SNP genotyping assays and the UGT1A1*28 variant was detected by the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer. All samples were also screened for common Malay G6PD variants using established techniques. The frequency of UGT1A1 211G > A mutation is significantly higher in the severely hyperbilirubinemic group (13%) than the control group (4%; p = 0.015) and all the positive cases were heterozygous for the mutation. There was no significant difference in the frequency of UGT1A1*28 mutation between the severely hyperbilirubinemic (3.5%) and the control group (0.01%; p = 0.09). None of the neonates in both groups carried the nt247 T > C mutation. The prevalence of G6PD mutation was significantly higher in the severely jaundiced group than control (9% vs 4%; p = 0.04). In conclusion, nt 211 G > A alleles constitute at least 12% of UGT1A1 mutations underlying unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and appears to be a significant independent risk factor associated with severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in the Malay newborns.

    Since the first H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) infection in the region in August 2003, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam have all recorded outbreaks of the disease. The HPAIV continues to occur in some countries in Southeast Asia despite control programmes encompassing surveillance, vaccination and stamping out strategies. A number of strains have been circulating in the region since the first outbreaks in 2003, and although the source of the initial outbreaks in domestic poultry is not known, the continuing propagation of disease in the region is primarily the result of the movement of domestic poultry and poultry products, and people. A comprehensive approach using all the strategies available to break the chain of transmission of the virus in poultry will be needed to achieve lasting disease control.

    We report the growth of gallium-based compounds, i.e., gallium oxynitride (GaON) and gallium oxide (Ga2O3) on multilayer graphene (MLG) on insulator using a mixture of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and gallium nitrate (Ga(NO3)3) by electrochemical deposition (ECD) method at room temperature (RT) for the first time. The controlling parameters of current density and electrolyte molarity were found to greatly influence the properties of the grown structures. The thicknesses of the deposited structures increase with the current density since it increases the chemical reaction rates. The layers grown at low molarities of both solutions basically show grain-like layer with cracking structures and dominated by both Ga2O3 and GaON. Such cracking structures seem to diminish with the increases of molarities of one of the solutions. It is speculated that the increase of current density and ions in the solutions helps to promote the growth at the area with uneven thicknesses of graphene. When the molarity of Ga(NO3)3 is increased while keeping the molarity of NH4NO3 at the lowest value of 2.5 M, the grown structures are basically dominated by the Ga2O3 structure. On the other hand, when the molarity of NH4NO3 is increased while keeping the molarity of Ga(NO3)3 at the lowest value of 0.8 M, the GaON structure seems to dominate where their cubic and hexagonal arrangements are coexisting. It was found that when the molarities of Ga(NO3)3 are at the high level of 7.5 M, the grown structures tend to be dominated by Ga2O3 even though the molarity of NH4NO3 is made equal or higher than the molarity of Ga(NO3)3. When the grown structure is dominated by the Ga2O3 structure, the deposition process became slow or unstable, resulting to the formation of thin layer. When the molarity of Ga(NO3)3 is increased to 15 M, the nanocluster-like structures were formed instead of continuous thin film structure. This study seems to successfully provide the conditions in growing either GaON-dominated or Ga2O3-dominated structure by a simple and low-cost ECD. The next possible routes to convert the grown GaON-dominated structure to either single-crystalline GaN or Ga2O3 as well as Ga2O3-dominated structure to single-crystalline Ga2O3 structure have been discussed.

    Chronic myeloproliferative diseases (MPDs) are heterogenous group of haematological malignant disorders. It is now a well recognized fact that the JAK2 (V617F) mutation occurs in majority of the patients with polycythaemia vera (PV) and half of those with myelofibrosis and essential thrombocythaemia. The presence of JAK2 (V617F) mutation is considered an important criterion for the exclusion of secondary-reactive from clonal disorders. In the present uni-institutional study, we analyzed the JAK2 (V617F) mutation status in the ethnic Malay and Chinese patients who were diagnosed as MPDs.

    Molecular pathogenesis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is well established and molecular monitoring for patients with CML has become an important practice in the management of patients on imatinib therapy. In the present study, we report the use of RQ-PCR method for detection of BCR-ABL fusion gene for our CML cases. We performed a two-step RQ-PCR on bone marrow aspirates or peripheral blood of 37 CML patients. Quantitative expression of BCR-ABL fusion gene was carried out relative to the expression of a housekeeping gene as endogenous control to compensate for uneven cell numbers, RNA quality, or variations in reverse transcription efficiencies. Twenty-four of these patients were pre-treated with hydroxyurea or alpha interferon prior to the imatinib therapy. Their BCR-ABL fusion gene levels were monitored for 18 months. All samples processed were evaluable. The PCR amplification efficiency of the ABL gene is 90.5% (0.2158) and the BCR-ABL gene, 93.4% (0.1573).
