    Meibomian gland is one of the anatomical eye structures to provide oily lipid layer to the anterior part of the eye. Textural analysis by using Mean Histogram Method was proposed as a method of estimating area of Meibomian Gland Loss (MGL). Objective: The main objective of this study was to objectively measure the meibomian gland image by using textural analysis.

    Previous work employed digital image analysis using a fully-automated computer software to quantify changes in MG, which is meibomian gland loss. However, semi-automated software is more favorable for clinical applications as it allows clinicians to manually delete undesired noise or artifacts.

    Many East Asians apply double eyelid tape to create the double eyelid effect temporarily as a means of increasing their beauty. This study evaluated the effects of four-week wear of double eyelid tape on anterior ocular health in young adult women with single eyelids. Twenty-nine participants who met the inclusion criteria were recruited. The participants' anterior ocular health was examined including blinking characteristics (blink pattern and blink rate), ocular surface health (presence of corneal abrasion, corneal staining, conjunctival staining, corneal curvatures, meibomian gland dysfunction), tear break up time, intraocular pressure, and subjective comfort level. Participants were required to apply the double eyelid tape for at least eight hours a day and five days a week for four weeks. The parameters were re-measured at the end of each week. There was a significant increase in conjunctival staining, corneal staining, and meibomian gland dysfunction, with a significant reduction in tear break-up time and intraocular pressure. By week 3, all participants had incomplete blinks. There was no significant change in symptoms and subjective comfort level reported. Therefore, patients and eye care practitioners should be aware of the potential implications of double eyelid tape wear on ocular health, with no significant change in subjective comfort.

    Diabetes mellitus is a condition of increase glucose concentration in blood plasma. Complication of diabetes mellitus are progressive and leads to several changes on ocular surface. Lack of data focusing on changes in ocular surface among early detect diabetes. Therefore, the aim of the study is to focus on the prevalence of changes in Meibomian glands, tear films and crystalline lens among early detect diabetes type 2. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted to assess the grading of Meibomian glands, number of expressible glands, Tear-break up time (TBUT), schirmer’s test I , and crystalline lens in 100 eyes of 50 patients who has type 2 diabetes less than 5 years. Demographic information , medical and ocular history was recorded. Data was entered on SPSS version 25- descriptive analysis. The mean ± standard deviation for age was 51.08 ± 8.708 and the years of diabetes was 3.14 ± 1.498. The results stated, more people has MGD grade 1 with percentage of 39% . Besides, TBUT test has mean ± SD of 4.74 ± 1.404 and tear production with mean of 15.1± 8.650. There were 54% more patients has no changes on crystalline lens. Approximately, high prevalence in changes of Meibomian gland, and tear film while low prevalence on changes of crystalline lens among shorter duration diabetic patients.

    PURPOSE: To report the clinical profile and effectiveness of oral doxycycline as a non-invasive treatment for glaucoma filtering surgery complications.

    METHOD: Prospective case series.

    RESULTS: Doxycycline is widely used in treating corneal melts, ocular surface diseases, meibomian gland disease, recurrent epithelial cell erosion, rosacea, and keratitis sicca. This prospective case series highlights the successful treatment of five patients with leaking blebs and conjunctiva erosion from glaucoma filtration surgery with the use of oral doxycycline. There was no adverse event reported in our cases.

    CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that oral doxycycline may be a feasible non-surgical treatment modality due to its ability to inhibit collagenolysis, restore the Meibomian gland function, thereby stopping breakdown and promote conjunctival tissue healing.

    This study attempted to determine whether contact lens wear has any adverse effect on the Meibomian glands. The study also tried to elucidate the prevalence of Meibomian gland dysfunction in the general population. The results of the study showed that Meibomian gland dysfunction exists in 43% of the population (lens wearers and nonlens wearers), 49% of the contact lens wearing population (81 subjects), and 39% of nonlens wearers (150 subjects). No statistically significant difference was found in the prevalence of Meibomian gland dysfunction between healthy contact lens wearers and the control group of nonlens wearers. The study therefore could not prove that contact lens wear is a contributing factor to Meibomian gland dysfunction.

    PURPOSE: To evaluate ocular surface changes among patients with psoriasis in Malaysia, a developing country in Southeast Asia.

    METHODS: An interdisciplinary case-control study (60 psoriasis patients and 40 control subjects) to look at the differences in ocular surface manifestations between patients with psoriasis and a group of age-, gender- and ethnicity-matched healthy controls.

    RESULTS: One hundred and twenty eyes of 60 patients with psoriasis and 80 eyes of 40 healthy controls without psoriasis were included in the study. Mild-to-moderate psoriasis was found in 42 patients (70%), while 18 patients (30%) had severe psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis was found in 19 patients (32%). Of the 60 psoriatic patients, the prevalence of ocular involvement was 65% (39/60), in which 32% (19/60) had dry eyes, 27% (16/60) had lid margin abnormalities, 33% (20/60) had cataract, and one had history of anterior uveitis. Compared to controls, ocular surface of psoriatic patients showed more eyelid margin abnormalities, higher meibomian gland loss and lower tear film break-up time. The estimated odds ratio for dry eyes in the psoriasis group was 2.2 (95% CI: 0.8-6.9).

    CONCLUSION: Ocular surface disorders encompassing eyelid margin abnormalities, meibomian gland loss and tear dysfunction occur at an earlier and higher rate among psoriatic patients.
