2-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl 3-nitrobenzoate is synthesized by reacting 4-chlorophenacyl bromide with 3-nitrobenzoic acid using a slight excess of potassium or sodium carbonate in DMF medium at room temperature. The structure of the compound was confirmed by IR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. FT-IR spectrum of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl 3-nitrobenzoate was recorded and analyzed. The crystal structure is also described. The vibrational wavenumbers were computed using HF and DFT methods and are assigned with the help of potential energy distribution method. The first hyperpolarizability and infrared intensities are also reported. The geometrical parameters of the title compound obtained from XRD studies are in agreement with the calculated (DFT) values. The stability of the molecule arising from hyper-conjugative interaction and charge delocalization has been analyzed using NBO analysis. The HOMO and LUMO analysis are used to determine the charge transfer within the molecule. MEP was performed by the DFT method.

In the title ternary complex, C(10)H(9)N(2)(+).C(7)H(3)N(2)O(6)(-).C(7)H(4)N(2)O(6), the pyridinium cation adopts the role of the donor in an intermolecular N-H.O hydrogen-bonding interaction with the carboxylate group of the 3,5-dinitrobenzoate anion. The molecules of the ternary complex form molecular ribbons perpendicular to the b direction, which are stabilized by one N-H.O, one O-H.O and five C-H.O intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The ribbons are further interconnected by three intermolecular C-H.O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network.

In the ternary title compound, catena-poly[[silver(I)-mu-ethylenediamine-kappa(2)N:N'] 3-nitrobenzoate monohydrate], [[Ag(C(2)H(8)N(2))](C(7)H(4)NO(4)) x H(2)O](n), the Ag atom is bicoordinated in a linear configuration by two different N atoms from two symmetry-related ethylenediamine ligands, thus giving linear polymeric chains with an [-Ag-N-C-C-N-](n) backbone running parallel to the a axis. In the crystal packing, these linear chains are interconnected by N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen bonds to form layers parallel to the ab plane.

A total of seven novel benzimidazoles were synthesized by a 4-step reaction starting from 4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoic acid under relatively mild reaction conditions. The synthesized compounds were screened for their antimycobacterial activity against M. tuberculosis H₃₇Rv (MTB-H₃₇Rv) and INH-resistant M. tuberculosis (INHR-MTB) strains using agar dilution method. Three of them displayed good activity with MIC of less than 0.2 μM. Compound ethyl 1-(2-(4-(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)-2-aminophenyl)piperazin-1-yl)ethyl)-2-(4-(5-(4-fluorophenyl)pyridin-3-ylphenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carboxylate (5 g) was found to be the most active with MIC of 0.112 μM against MTB-H₃₇Rv and 6.12 μM against INHR-MTB, respectively.

A series of novel cholinesterase inhibitors containing nitrobenzoate core structure were synthesized by a facile and efficient method. The structure of the novel compounds were fully characterized and confirmed by analytical as well as spectroscopic methods. Compound indicated as 2f was found to possess the best cholinesterase inhibitory activities of all the evaluated compounds. Results suggest that 2f is a selective acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, although it also inhibits butyrylcholinesterase at higher concentration. Kinetics inhibition result suggest that 2f is a mixed-mode inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. In addition, it was found to have low cytotoxicity. Molecular docking on compound 2f was carried out to rationalize the observed in vitro enzymatic assay results. Most importantly, the potential of nitrobenzoate derivatives as cholinesterase inhibitor was shown through this study. In summary, we discovered nitrobenzoates as a new scaffold that may eventually yield useful compounds in treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

The study was conducted to determine thiocyanate (SCN-) and hypothiocyanite (OSCN-) concentrations in resting (RWS) and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) and stimulated parotid saliva (SPS) of 20 healthy young adults aged 21-29 y. Samples of saliva were collected at 12:30, immediately before lunch. Resting saliva was collected by expectoration, and stimulated saliva was collected during the uniform chewing of paraffin wax. Parotid secretion was collected using a modified Carlsson-Crittenden cup (Carlsson et al., Am, J. Physiol., 26, 169-177, 1910). SCN- concentration was determined by the ferric nitrate method (Betts et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 75, 5721-5727, 1953) whilst OSCN- was assayed using 2-mercaptoethanol as a reducing agent (Pruitt et al., Caries Res., 16, 315-323, 1982). In RWS, SWS and SPS, the mean SCN- concentrations (in mM) were 1.48 +/- 0.59(S.D.), 0.90 +/- 0.56(S.D.) and 1.24 +/- 0.65(S.D.) whilst the mean OSCN- concentrations (in microM) were 31.21 +/- 13.54(S.D.), 24.90 +/- 12.61 and 30.19 +/- 23.35(S.D.) in the respective salivas. The presence of OSCN- in the secretion collected from the parotid gland supported previous findings by Tenovuo and Pruitt (Tenovuo et al., J. Oral Path, ol. 13, 573-584, 1984), who suggested an endogenous glandular (eukaryotic) source of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), since parotid saliva from healthy glands is devoid of bacteria and leukocytes.
