    BACKGROUND: The fungus comb is a unique structure inside termites' nests that facilitates the growth of Termitomyces sp. as a nutrient source for the termites. It is known to possess immunomodulatory properties that boost the immune system.

    AIM: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of ethyl acetate extract of fungus comb (EAEFC) on the inflammatory reaction in the spleen of mice induced by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

    METHODS: An experimental study was conducted using a post-test-only control group design with male BALB/C mice (n = 24). The mice were divided randomly into four groups, each comprising six mice, and administered substances via gavage. Groups I and III were administered a solution of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in distilled water, while Groups II and IV were given 500 mg/kg BW EAEFC dissolved in 5% DMSO. On the fifteenth day, Groups I and II received intraperitoneal injections of 5 ml/kg BW saline, while Groups III and IV were injected with 10 mg/kg BW LPS dissolved in saline. After three hours, the mice were euthanized and splenic immunohistology was examined under a light microscope. The results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation, while the group differences were assessed statistically.

    RESULTS: The expression of interleukin (IL)-1, furin, and activated NK cell was significantly higher in the inflamed model after EAEFC supplementation, while the extract suppressed IL-10.

    CONCLUSION: EAEFC was found to alter cytokine expression in the spleen in response to inflammation.

    Termitomyces are delicious edible mushrooms found in Africa and South-East Asia including Malaysia. These mushrooms were found to grow symbiotically with termites around termite nests. Numerous efforts have been made worldwide to develop a cultivation method for these mushrooms. Unfortunately, none of those attempts were successful. The main obstacles encountered were the difficulty to identify and isolate pure termitomyces culture. The problem became prevalent as the culture gets contaminated by other fungi. Termitomyces can easily be identified by its mushroom fruiting body eventually but certainly not at the mycelium and hyphea stages. In this study a simple PCR-based genetic marker detection method for confirmation of termitomyces at any culture stage was developed. Using this method, four distinctive PCR assays
    were developed using specific PCR primers designed based on the DNA sequence of the termitomyces mushroom. The PCR results showed that the PCR assays using intact termitomyces
    DNA as template was not suitable for this purpose. However, PCR using BamHI and EcoRI predigested termitomyces DNA as template showed identical polymorphism pattern for both
    termitomyces mushroom DNA and termitomyces culture DNA. Thus, the method reported here can be used for the identific.

    Mushrooms have been consumed by mankind for millennia. In Malaysia, there are many species of edible mushrooms which are either cultivated (Agaricus spp., Auricularia spp., Pleurotus spp.) or harvested in the wild (Ganoderma spp., Polyporus spp., Termitomyces spp.). With the advancement of technology, numerous discoveries have been made that elucidated the nutritional (high in fibres, proteins, vitamins; low in fats, cholesterols, sodium) and medicinal (anti-oxidative, anti-hypertensive, neuritogenesis) properties of edible mushrooms, all of which are highly beneficial for the maintenance of human health and well-being. This review thus compiles and documents the available literatures on edible mushrooms reported from Malaysia complete with scientific, English, and vernacular names for future references; provides a comprehensive and updated overview on the nutritional and medicinal properties edible mushrooms reported from Malaysia; and identifies the research gaps to promote further research and development on edible mushrooms reported from Malaysia. Overall, Malaysia is and remains a natural repository for wild and cultivated edible mushrooms. Deeper investigation on their nutritional and medicinal properties will certainly serve as an impetus for economic as well as scientific progress.
