Positive social interaction with peers was said to facilitate cognitive and intellectual development leading to good academic performance. There was paucity of published data on the effect of social management (SM) emotional intelligence (EI) on academic performance. We conducted this study to examine their relationship in the undergraduate medical students in a public medical school in Malaysia. This was a cross-sectional study using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) to measure the SM. The first and final year medical students were invited to participate. Students answered a paper-based demography questionnaire and completed the online MSCEIT in privacy. Independent predictors were identified using multivariate analyses. A total of 163 (84 first year and 79 final year) medical students completed the study (at a response rate of 66.0%). This study examines the structure of self-estimates of intelligence (SEI) across 12 nations (Australia, Austria, Brazil, France, Iran, Israel, Malaysia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, UK and US). Participants rated themselves on general and specific abilities from three popular models of intelligence: Gardner's multiple intelligences, Sternberg's triarchic theory of intelligence, and Goleman's emotional intelligence. The results showed that (a) laypeople across nations have similar and invariant concepts of intelligence, (b) concepts of intelligence are cross-culturally closely related to academic notions of intellectual ability and (c) sex differences in general and specific SEI favouring men are consistent across countries. Male hubris and female humility in SEI seem independent of sex differences in actual cognitive ability and national levels of masculinity-femininity. Furthermore, international mean differences in general SEI could not be attributed to discrepancies in national intelligence quotient (IQ) levels or to cultural variations.
Educational psychology research has linked fluid intelligence with learning and memory abilities and neuroimaging studies have specifically associated fluid intelligence with event related potentials (ERPs). The objective of this study is to find the relationship of ERPs with learning and memory recall and predict the memory recall score using P300 (P3) component.
This study investigated the relationship between trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and executive skills (ESs), and the differences between TEI and ESs among Malaysian and Iranian youths. In this study, 226 Malaysians and 248 Iranians completed the TEIQue-SF and Executive Skills Questionnaire. Hypotheses were tested with Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings indicated that TEI had significant predictions on ESs, depending on cultural contexts. Significant differences were found in the effects of TEI on ESs, including emotional control, metacognition, goal-directed persistence, response inhibition, planning/prioritization, sustained attention, stress tolerance, task initiation, and working memory among Malaysian and Iranian youth. No significant difference was found in the effects of TEI on ESs, including flexibility, organization, and time management across both groups. This study makes a unique contribution to emotional intelligence and executive functioning research literature by considering several ESs at the same time for personal development and promoting healthier lives. Comparison of the effect of TEI on ESs in the Malaysian and Iranian contexts using advanced analysis methods is one of the most important methodological contributions of the study.
We examined the clinical, semiological, scalp EEG, and neuropsychological features of patients with "pure" neocortical temporal lobe epilepsy (NTLE) who were successfully treated by neocortical temporal resection sparing the mesial temporal structures. This retrospective study included 17 patients with lesional NTLE who satisfied the following criteria: presence of a discrete structural lesion in the lateral temporal lobe on preoperative MRI; lateral temporal resection sparing the mesial temporal structures; follow-up for at least two years after surgery; and favourable postoperative seizure outcome (Engel Class I). The study included 10 females and seven males, and the age at surgery ranged from 15 to 48 years (mean: 30.7 years). Auras, video-recorded seizure semiology, interictal and ictal EEG, and pre- and post-operative neuropsychological data were reviewed. Twenty patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with hippocampal sclerosis, who had a favourable postoperative seizure outcome (Engel Class I), were selected as a control group. Age at seizure onset was significantly greater in patients with NTLE than in controls. A history of febrile convulsion was significantly less frequent in NTLE patients. Epigastric ascending sensation (6% versus 40%; p=0.017), oral automatisms (29% versus 80%; p=0.003), gestural automatisms (47% versus 80%; p=0.047), and dystonic posturing (0% versus 40%; p=0.003) were significantly less frequent in NTLE than controls. Ictal unitemporal rhythmic theta activity was also significantly less frequent in NTLE than controls (35.3% versus 75%; p=0.015). Preoperative IQ score (range: 68 to 114; mean: 88.9) and preoperative memory quotient score (range: 56-122; mean: 98.1) were significantly higher in NTLE (p=0.003 and p=0.048, respectively). There were notable differences in clinical, semiological, EEG, and neuropsychological features between "pure" NTLE and MTLE. These findings may be useful to identify the epileptogenic zone.
