BACKGROUND: In current years, researchers have shown their prime interest in developing multifunctional drug delivery systems, especially against cancers, for effective anticancer outcomes.

METHODOLOGY: Raloxifene (RLX) loaded liposomal-graphene nanosheet (GNS) was developed. The novelty of this work was to enhance the solubilization of RLX and improvement of its bioavailability in the disease area. So, the selection of optimized formula design of experiment was implemented which produced the desired formula with the particle size of 156.333 nm. Further, encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release, and thermodynamic stability of optimized formulation were evaluated. The optimized formulation exhibited prolonged release of RLX for a longer period of 24 h, which can minimize the dose-related toxicity of the drug. Furthermore, optimized formulation demonstrated remarkable thermodynamic stability in terms of phase separation, creaming, and cracking.

RESULTS: The cytotoxicity study on the A549 cell line exhibited significant (P < .05) results in favor of optimized formulation than the free drug. The apoptotic activity was carried out by Annexin V staining and Caspase 3 analysis, which demonstrated remarkable promising results for optimized liposomal formulation.

CONCLUSION: From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that the novel optimized liposomal formulation could be pondered as a novel approach for the treatment of lung cancer.

A new yeast strain with promising probiotic traits was isolated from the Red Sea water samples. The isolate (YMHS) was subjected to genetic characterization and identified as Cryptococcus sp. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the rRNA gene internal transcribed spacer regions showed 95% sequence similarity between the isolate and Cryptococcus albidus. Cryptococcus sp. YMHS exhibited desirable characteristics of probiotic microorganisms; it has tolerance to low pH in simulated gastric juice, resistance to bile salts, hydrophobic characteristics, broad antimicrobial activity, and in vitro ability to degrade cholesterol. The isolate grew well in a semi-defined medium composed of yeast extract, glucose, KH2PO4, (NH4)2SO4, and MgSO4, yielding cell mass of 2.32 and 5.82 g/l in shake flask and in bioreactor cultures, respectively. Fed-batch cultivation, with controlled pH, increased the biomass gradually in culture, reaching 28.5 g/l after 32 h cultivation. Beside the feasible use as a probiotic, the new strain also could be beneficial in the development of functional foods or novel food preservatives. To our knowledge, this is the first report of yeast with probiotic properties isolated from the Red Sea.

The study found that the activity concentrations of the radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K in the sandstone are 32 ± 13, 29.6 ± 12.2, and 132.6 ± 86.4 Bq kg-1, respectively. These values are lower than the reported worldwide limits of 33, 45, and 412 Bq kg-1. According to the present study, the absorbed dose rate (Dair), the annual effective dose, and the excess life time cancer were all found to be below the worldwide mean. Pearson correlation, PCA, and HCA were used to analyze the data and identify patterns in the relationship between radionuclides and radiological hazards. A statistical analysis of the sandstones showed that the radioactive elements 238U, 232Th and 40K are the main contributors to the radioactive risk. The study suggests that the sandstone is safe to use. The levels of radioactivity are not high enough to pose a risk to human health.

Despite the vast Egyptian poultry production, scanty information is available concerning the infection of haemprotozoan parasites as pathogens in commercial broilers. In the present study, we provided the first detection of leucocytozoonosis in five broiler chicken flocks in El-Beheira Egyptian governorate. Despite the low mortality rates in the affected flocks (0.3%-1% as a 5-day mortality), severe postmortem (hemorrhagic spots and scars) and histopathologic lesions appeared in different organs including skeletal muscles, liver, kidney, pancreas, abdominal cavity, and bursa of Fabricius. Evaluation of blood smears revealed gametocytes in erythrocytes and leukocytes. Conventional reverse transcriptase-PCR and partial sequence analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase b gene detected Leucocytozoon caulleryi. GenBank accession numbers of the five Egyptian L. caulleryi isolates were obtained. The five L. caulleryi were 99.9% identical to each other and 99.14% similar to the L. caulleryi mitochondrial DNA gene of Asian strains from India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Dengue virus (DENV) has emerged as a major economic concern in developing countries, with 2.5 billion people believed to be at risk. Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) lining the circulatory system from heart to end vessels perform crucial functions in the human body, by aiding gas exchange in lungs, gaseous, nutritional and its waste exchange in all tissues, including the blood brain barrier, filtration of fluid in the glomeruli, neutrophil recruitment, hormone trafficking, as well as maintenance of blood vessel tone and hemostasis. These functions can be deregulated during DENV infection. In this study, BALB/c mice infected with DENV serotype 2 were analyzed histologically for changes in major blood vessels in response to DENV infection. In the uninfected mouse model, blood vessels showed normal architecture with intact endothelial monolayer, tunica media, and tunica adventitia. In the infected mouse model, DENV distorted the endothelium lining and disturbed the smooth muscle, elastic laminae and their supporting tissues causing vascular structural disarrangement. This may explain the severe pathological illness in DENV-infected individuals. The overall DENV-induced damages on the endothelial and it's supporting tissues and the dysregulated immune reactions initiated by the host were discussed.

Many discrepancy in selection of proper filter and its parameters for individual cases exists. The authors investigate the impact of the most common filters on patient NM images with coronary artery disease (CAD), and compare the results with the computerized tomography (CT)-Angio and angiography for accuracy. The investigation initiated by performing various single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT)/CT scan of the national electrical manufacturers association chest phantoms having hot and cold inserts. Data acquired on GE 670 PRO SPECT/CT; 360Ø, 64 frames, 60 seconds, low energy high resolution (LEHR) 128, low energy general purpose (LEGP) with CT attenuation (120 kV and 170 mA). The images reconstructed with filtered back projection and ITERATIVE ordered-subset expectation maximization utilizing filters; Hann, Butterworth, Metz, Hamming, and Wiener. The Image contrast was calculated to assess absolute nearness of the inserts. Based on the preliminary results, then scans of 92 patients with CAD; 64 males and 28 females, age 41 to 77 years old, who had been reported earlier reprocessed with the nominated filter and were reported by 2 NM expert. The results compared to the earlier reports and to the CT-Angio and angiography. The optimization suggested 3 filters; Wiener (Wi), Metz and Butterworth (But) provide the highest contrast (99- 66.4%) and (81- 32%) for the cold and hot inserts respectively, with the (Wi) filter to be the better option. The reprocessed patients scan with the (Wi) presented an elevated diagnostic accuracy, correlated well with the CT-Angio and angiography results (P
