A hybrid piezo/triboelectric nanogenerator (H/P-TENG) is designed for mechanical energy harvesting using polymer ceramic composite films; polydimethylsiloxane/Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (PDMS/BZT-BCT) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). A lead-free BZT-BCT piezoelectric ceramic was prepared via solid-state method and blended into PDMS to form a series of polymer-ceramic composite films, ranging from 5% to 30% by weight. The films were forward/reverse poled with corona poling and their electrical properties were compared to non-poled samples. The H/P-TENG constructed with forward-poled 15 wt% BZT-BCT in PDMS achieved the highest open-circuit voltage, V oc of 127 V, short-circuit current density, J sc of 67 mA m-2, short-circuit charge density, Q sc of 118 μC m-2, and peak power density of 7.5 W m-2, an increase of 190% over pristine PDMS-based TENG. It was discovered that incorporating BZT-BCT into the PDMS matrix improved the triboelectric properties of PDMS. The overlapping electron cloud (OEC) model was used to explain the enhancement and the effect of poling direction of the PDMS/BZT-BCT composite used in H/P-TENG, providing fundamental knowledge of the influence of piezoelectric polarisation on contact electrification.

This study investigates the photophysical and electrical properties of 4-heptamethyl-trisiloxanyl-n-undecyloxy-4'-nitrostilbene (SNS), a low molar mass organosiloxane liquid crystal containing a nitrostilbene chromophore. Real-time monitoring of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the nitrostilbene moiety was conducted in dichloromethane solution and thin films (in both crystalline and Smectic C (SmC) phases). A charge transfer excited state is formed following vibrational cooling and solvent interaction within 0.4 to 1.6 ps, which then relaxes to the ground state in 1.6 ns. Five distinct lifetime components were identified in thin films, attributed to the heterogeneous local environment and aggregate formation. Notable differences in excited-state lifetimes were observed between the crystalline and SmC phases, with slower dynamics in the former due to the rigidity of the crystalline phase. Photoconductivity under UV irradiation was examined in SmC, Smectic A (SmA), and isotropic phases, showing a significant increase in current response, particularly in the SmC phase. Polarizing optical microscopy revealed morphological changes post-UV exposure, such as reduced SmC domain size and decreased birefringence. Dielectric measurements indicated distinct relaxation peaks in SmC and SmA phases, reflecting more disordered molecular arrangements. The study reveals that UV exposure significantly enhances SNS conductivity, particularly within the SmC phase. This enhancement is likely attributed to UV excitation promoting the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer state within the trans-stilbene moiety. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential applications of nitrostilbene-functionalized organosiloxane liquid crystals in optoelectronic devices, such as light switches and photodetectors.

Incorporating carbon-based fillers into triboelectric nanogenerators, TENGs, is a compelling strategy to enhance the power output. However, the lack of systematic studies comparing various carbon fillers and their impact on tribopositive contact layers necessitates further research. To address these concerns, various carbon fillers (including buckminsterfullerene (C60), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and super activated carbon (SAC)) with distinct structural and electrical properties are mixed with polyvinyl alcohol, PVA, to form PVA-carbon composites and used as tribopositive layers in the contact-separation of TENGs. The results show that PVA-SAC provides the largest enhancements to the electrical outputs of the TENG. At the optimal loading of 1 wt%, PVA-SAC composites yielded a peak power density of 12.8 W m-2, a substantial 220% enhancement compared to pristine PVA. The mechanism governing the enhancement is determined by analysing the changes in electrical and structural characteristics caused by the addition of various carbon fillers. Dielectric measurements indicated that enhanced dielectric properties did not significantly contribute to the observed increase in the triboelectric performance. Instead, Raman and FTIR analyses revealed a correlation between the PVA-carbon interactions and an increase in the D/G ratio of carbon fillers, accompanied by a reduction in hydrogen-bonded -OH groups within PVA. This suggests that the interaction between the π electrons of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms and the oxygen lone pairs in PVA inhibits hydrogen bond formation, leading to an increase in free -OH groups. Consequently, these free -OH groups enhanced the electron-donating capability and improved the tribopositive behaviour of the PVA-carbon composites. Our results proved that filler-matrix interactions are paramount in engineering high-performance TENGs by controlling the electron affinity of the triboelectric layers.
