    Silicon nanowires were synthesized on Si substrates (111) via thermal evaporation using AuPd thin layer catalyst. Pre cleaned of Si wafer was used as a substrate to assemble the nanostructure products. In this work, the effect of growth temperature that ranging from 800 to 1000°C on the formation of silicon nanowires studied extensively. X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscope were employed to characterize the structures and morphology of nanowires. Vertical aligned silicon nanowires have been successfully grown on Si substrates at 900 and 1000°C. At 1100°C, the high aspect ratio of silicon nanowires can be produced but the formation density is low. The presence of AuPd catalyst on the tip of nanowires, it is expected that VLS is the most suitable to explain the growth mechanism of obtained SiNWs. The crystalline structure of SiNWs was proved by XRD data.

    New solid acid catalyst consisting of zirconium sulfate (ZS) supported on a pure-HMS hexagonal mesoporous material (HMS) have been prepared and characterized. This heterogeneous catalyst is able to make a contribution to the field of acid catalyst involving bulky organic molecules. XRD analysis shows that ZS is intact after impregnated on HMS surface and formed finely dispersed species. No ZS crystal phase was developed even at ZS loadings as high as 40 wt %. The occurrence of chemical interaction between ZS and HMS was observed by XPS analysis. Further, XRF results demonstrated that there is no leaching of ZS elements after impregnation. This study shows that ZS can be impregnated on HMS and would be a promising solid acid catalyst for acid-type reactions espcially invovling bulky organic molecuels.

    The storage of oil sludge at refineries is a major problem to the petroleum industry. Oil sludge treatments such as by using sludge farming, incineration, physical and chemical techniques have been applied to separate the hydrocarbon from the solid sediment. The paper relates a characteristic study performed on solid sediment from a local oil sludge sample for making sintered brick. The study includes the used of XRD, XRF, digital microscopy and particle size analyzer. The result shows that the sample highly contains quartz minerals with particle size ranging from 0.5 – 200 ȝm. The chemical phosphorous from the surfactant can be removed by washing to make this solid sediment to be used as a material in the brick making.

    The geometry of reactor core, thermal column, collimator and shielding system for BNCT application of TRIGA MARK II REACTOR were simulated with MCNP5 code. Neutron particle lethargy and dose were calculated with MCNPX code. Neutron flux in a sample located at the end of collimator after normalized to measured value (Eid Mahmoud Eid Abdel Munem, 2007) at 1 MW power was 1.06E8 n/cm2/s. According to IAEA (2001) flux of 1.00E9 n/cm2/s requires three hours of treatment. Few modifications were needed to get higher flux.

    The objective of this study is to compare low-contrast detectability of computed radiography (CR) and screen/film (SF) mammography systems. The Nijimegen contrast detail test object (CDMAM type 3.4) was imaged at 28 kV, in automatic exposure control mode separately. Six medical imaging physicists read each CDMAM phantom image. Contrast detail curves were plotted to compare lowcontrast detectability of CR (soft copy and hard copy) and SF mammography systems. Effect of varying exposure parameters, namely kV, object position inside the breast phantom, and entrance surface exposure (ESE) on the contrast detail curve were also investigated using soft copy CR. The significance of the difference in contrast between CR and SF, and for each exposure parameter, was tested using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test. The low- contrast detectability of the CR (soft copy and hard copy) system was found to be not significantly different to that of the SF system (p>0.05, Kruskal-Wallis test). For CR soft copy, no significant relationship (p>0.05, Kruskal-Wallis test) was seen for variation of kV, object position inside the breast phantom and ESE. This indicates that CR is comparable with SF for useful detection and visualization of low-contrast objects such as small lowcontrast areas corresponding to breast pathology.

    The objective of this study was to compare the acquired image of teflon, human bone equivalent material on a Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanner with Monte Carlo simulation (MCNP). The cylindrical shape teflon phantom with dimensions of 19.5 cm length and 5.0 cm diameter was used for imaging with different settings of kilovolts (kV) and milliamperes (mA) of PET/CT. In this simulation, the photon flux in each pixel was accumulated by the Flux Image Radiograph (FIR) tally as flux image detectors and the image was plotted using Microsoft Office Excel. Results show that MCNP image was comparable with that of CT image and the obtained MCNP image depends on pixels size of the FIR tally.

    Developments of computer technology and image processing have shifted conventional industrial radiography application to industrial digital radiography (IDR) system. In this study, two types of IDR modules for non destructive testing (NDT), namely drum- and laser- type film digitizer with 50 μm pixel pitch have been evaluated for NDT applications. The modulation transfer function (MTF) and noise power spectrum (NPS) measurement were adapted to evaluate the image quality of IDR images. Results shown the averaged MTF for drum- and laser- type film digitizer at 20% modulation were 6.15 cycles/mm and 6.55 cycles/mm respectively. For NPS measurement and calculation, the result obtained shows that drum type film digitizer produced higher noise then laser type film digitizer. The study shows that the laser type film digitizer is the best system to be used for film digitization purposes because the MTF result shows that it modulates better than drum type and has the lowest and stable NPS.

    At present, soil and mineral based building material such as bricks are one of the main components in building construction in Malaysia. This building material is a direct source of radiation exposure since it contains naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). In this study, clay brick samples used were obtained from 7 factories in Selangor and Johore, Malaysia. The activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in these samples of clay bricks were determined using a comparative method and was analysed using gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. The mean values of activity concentrations for 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K were found to be in the range of 39.04 ± 0.88 Bqkg-1 - 73.61 ± 5.32 Bqkg-1, 43.38 ± 2.60 Bqkg-1 - 73.45 ± 1.51 Bqkg-1, and 381.54 ± 11.39 Bqkg-1 - 699.63 ± 15.82 Bqkg-1, respectively. The radiation hazard of NORM in the samples was estimated by calculating the radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin). Radium equivalent activity (Raeq) determined was in the range of 151.90 Bqkg-1 - 194.22 Bqkg-1 which is lower than the limit of 370 Bqkg-1 (equivalent to 1.5 mSvyr-1 ) recommended in the NEA-OECD report in 1979, whereas external hazard index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin) were between 0.20 – 0.26 and 0.52 - 0.71 respectively. The annual effective dose rate exposure to a dweller received from the clay bricks was calculated to be in the range of 0.35 ± 0.18 mSvy-1 - 0.43 ± 0.09 mSvy-1.

    The joining of ceramic-metal could be done through a few techniques: brazing, diffusion bonding, friction welding etc. However, the mechanism of ceramic-metal joining was still not properly understood. In this study, alumina rod was bonded to mild steel rod via friction welding technique by using Al 1100 sheet as interlayer. The diameter of the rods was 10 mm. Friction pressure of 20 MPa and forging pressure of 40 MPa were used. Rotational speeds were maintained at 900 rpm and friction times of 2 to 20 seconds were applied. The joining strength was determined through four point bending test. The maximum bending strength, 240 MPa was obtained at the friction times of 20 seconds. Under optical microscope and SEM observation, the deformation of the aluminum interface was clearly obtained. Mechanical interlocking and close contact between the aluminaaluminum and aluminum-mild steel were observed at magnifications of 3000X. The strength of alumina-steel bonding is much dependent on the wettability of the alumina surface by the molten aluminum and the existing of mechanical interlocking between interlayer and sample materials.

    A Monte Carlo simulation of the Malaysian nuclear reactor has been performed using MCNP Version 5 code. The purpose of the work is the determination of the multiplication factor (k eff ) for TRIGA Mark II research reactor in Malaysia based on Monte Carlo method. This work has been performed to calculate the value of k eff for two cases, which are the control rod either fully withdrawn or fully inserted to construct a complete model of the TRIGA Mark II PUSPATI Reactor (RTP). The RTP core was modeled as close as possible to the real core and the results of k eff from MCNP5 were obtained. When the control-fuel rods were fully inserted, the k eff value indicates the RTP reactor was in the subcritical condition with a value of 0.98370 ± 0.00054. When the control-fuel rods were fully withdrawn the value of k eff value indicates the RTP reactor is in the supercritical condition, that is 1.10773 ± 0.00083.

    This study was designed to investigate the crystallite sizes of Porites species. A set of 9 Porites skeletons i.e. Porites australiensis, Porites cylindrica, Porites lutea, Porites lichen, Porites digitata, Porites nigrescens, Porites rus, Porites annae and Porites sp. were studied by using XRay Diffraction method. The values of FWHM and theta (θ) are used in Scherrer equation to determine the crystallite sizes of all Porites samples. It was found that the crystallite sizes were in the range of 1007.78 Ǻ – 1706.04 Ǻ.

    In this study, the unaffected, affected and heavily affected teeth were studied by using X-Ray diffraction method. The D-values, which are related to the crystallite size of the apatite crystals, were calculated according to the Sherrer equation. The crystallite size of unaffected enamel was found to be 1530.95Å, while the affected enamel was 1490.22Å and the heavily affected enamel was 1484.16Å respectively. This study showed that the unaffected enamel has greater crystallite size as compared to the affected and heavily affected enamel.

    In this paper, densification of in-situ copper-niobium carbide composite using cold pressing technique was addressed. Mixtures of Cu-20vol%NbC powder were prepared by two methods.
    In first method, a mixture of Cu-15.79wt%Nb-2.04wt%C powder was milled at 400 rpm for 35 hours in a planetary mill. In second method, Cu and commercial NbC powder was mixed at 100 rpm for 2 hours in a jar mill. Then, both powders were pressed at different pressure (i.e. 350 MPa, 450 MPa, 550 MPa and 650 MPa) and sintered at 900 o C for 1 hour. Sample of in-situ and ex-situ Cu-20vol%NbC composite were characterized for density, hardness, phase formation by x-ray diffraction analysis and microstructure by scanning electron microscope. Xray diffraction analysis showed that NbC phase was formed in the in-situ processed sample. Hardness of in-situ processed copper composite was higher than that of the ex-situ processed copper composite due to good interface between coper matrix and niobium carbide reinforcement particle as well as distribution of finer niobium carbide particles in copper matrix. Sintered density of in-situ composite is lower than density of ex-situ composite beacuse of work hardening of the Cu-Nb-C mixture powder during powder to ball collision. Density and hardness of the in-situ and ex-situ Cu-20vol%NbC composites increase with the increase in compaction pressure as porosity is eliminated at higher compaction pressure.

    The growing concern over the workers safety and health has lead many factories and organizations do the air monitoring to ensure the airborne at their workplace is safe for the worker’s health and complying the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514). In this study, the monitoring covers an indoor air quality and chemical exposure to the workers in one of the power plant repair shop. A few workers from different sections namely blasting, welding, grinding, fitting and maintenance area were chosen to assist in the personal monitoring for 8 hours measurement. PM10 were measured at a few sampling points to collect dusts for 24 hours duration. The samples were brought back to the laboratory for gravimetric and SEM-EDAX analysis. The results were certainly exceed the limit for air quality, and many elements were detected such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, Ca, K, Ba, S, Cr, Zn and Cl. The present of these elements shows that exposure to these particulate matters is quite risky and some measure needs to be taken for remedial action.

    The paper relates a study on the development of an analysis procedure for measuring the gold coating thickness using EDXRF technique. Gold coating thickness was measured by relating the counts under the Au Lα peak its thickness value. In order to get a reasonably accurate result, a calibration graph was plotted using five gold-coated reference standards of different thicknesses. The calibration graph shows a straight line for thin coating measurement until 0.9μm. Beyond this the relationship was not linear and this may be resulted from the selfabsorption effect. Quantitative analysis was also performed on two different samples of goldcoated jewelry and a phone connector. Result from the phone connector analysis seems to agree with the manufacturer’s gold coating value. From the analysis of gold-coated jewelry it had been able to differentiate the two articles as gold wash and gold electroplated.

    Well water is a renewable natural resources and one of the drinking water sources. The well water may constituted of dissolved essential chemicals such as K+, Ca''+ and Na+ ; and natural radionuclides such as radioisotopes from uranium-thorium decay series. The geology and mineral composition of the soil will determined the kinds and levels of chemical contents in the groundwater resources. The water flows through the geological formation and dissolved the chemicals before reaching the aquifers. To evaluate how much chemicals and natural radioactive in the water resources, a study has been carried out. Well water samples in this study were taken from 3 districts in Kelantan, which is Bachok, Machang and Kuala Krai. Similarly, in situ water quality parameters were measured using YSI portable water quality parameter include pH, salinity, dissolve oxygen(DO), conductivity, turbidity and total dissolved solids(TDS). The concentrations of K', Ca" and Na' were determined using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF). Five ml of filtered sample was pipette into the sample cup and, irradiated and measured for 100 seconds counting times. The type of filter used for measuring If+ and Cat{ was Al-thin and default for Nat The ranged of concentration of Kt Ce and Na+ is 23.04-251.89, 3.12-.45.41, and 3.71-125.75 ppm, respectively.

    This work main aim is to study the analysis of slow neutrons which include thermal and
    epithermal neutrons and also analysis on fast neutrons. The outcome from this work showed that
    the comparison result between fast and slow neutrons. The safety assessment at reactor TRIGA
    FUSFATI (RTF) is one of the main objectives of the work and there is a detailed discussion on it
    which helped in accomplishing the task. Gamma Rays produced in this experiment was high and in
    the experiment and it is realized that the shielding plays a vital role in the success of this
    experiment which prevents all the radiations. From the results of the experiment it is realized that
    these gamma rays are not suitable for the application of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy
    (BNCT). However, these radiations are suitable for the application of Neutron Radiography (NR).
    The study on this work will help in study of nuclear applications such as BNCT, NR, SANS etc.
    These applications are using in medical and nuclear fields. The electronic device used in the
    experiment to detect neutron is Neutron Spectrometer. The results from Neutron Spectrometer
    and TLDs are very similar which showed that the experiment is a success. Numerical results were
    compared with those available in literature for validation.

    A trial study had been conducted to determine the particulate form of 137 Cs in seawater surrounding East Malaysia. Large volume of seawater was filtered at a flow rate of 15 liters/min through the copper hexacyanoferrates (II) impregnated filters. These filters were ashed and counted using the gamma spectrometry system to determine the dissolved 137 Cs activity. It was found that the particulate form of 137 Cs consists of 20 to 49 % of the total 137 Cs activity concentrations. Some reasonable explanations for higher particulate percentage such as sampling locations, high water flow-rate, and large volume of seawaters were further discussed. It is hope that the result of this study will help to build a better understanding about the usage of impregnated filters to study dissolved 137 Cs activity concentrations.

    Many studies were carried out throughout the world on radon measurement in water especially drinking water for it can cause problem to human health. This study is an attempt to measure the level of radon present in water collect from rivers and lakes. Data gathered from this study provides important information about radiation levels in water at selected sites, because radon gas is the largest contributor to natural radioactive radiation exposure to humans. Exposure to radon gas can cause lung cancer. Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) has been applied to determine the activity concentration of radon ( 222 Rn) in water. Water samples were collected from, ex-mining lake in Perak, Sok River in Kelantan, Tembeling River in Pahang. Water samples were prepared in polyethylene bottles mixed with liquid scintillator and stored for 3 weeks to allow 222 Rn and its progeny to reach the equilibrium, and the activity concentrations ranged from 0.24-1.27 Bq/L, and 0.029 – 0.155 Bq/L for radon and radium respectively.

    Taman Negara is a famous tourism destination for nature lover in Malaysia. The area is well kept from human activities and disturbances. Since there is no data for human exposure to natural radiation, there is a need to do this study. It will give a baseline data for surface dose and radionuclide concentrations and one can estimate the external hazards index for the visitor to this unexplored area, i.e. UiTM-Perhilitan research station, Kuala Keniam, Taman Negara, Malaysia. The surface dose rate measurements were done in-situ using portable radiation survey meter at the surface and 1 m above the surface. The top soil samples were taken using hand auger up to 15 cm depth at nine locations around research station. Samples were brought back to the UiTM laboratory in Shah Alam, dried, ground to powder form, and sieved using 250 μm sieve. Then the uranium and thorium concentrations were analyzed using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF).The mean value for surface dose rates on surface were 0.164 μSv/hr while the mean value for surface dose rates on 1m above the surface were 0.161 μSv/hr. The mean concentration of thorium was 2.62μg/g while the mean concentration of uranium was 0.61μg/g.
