    Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a subset of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), where IAQ is about what we
    breath. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can cause health problems to the residents. Air conditions in the shelter must
    be preserved, in order to ensure the safety and health of the residents. Certain indoor plants can filter out toxin found
    in the air. Other than that, indoor plants can help clean the air. In this study, seven types of indoor plants that can live
    in equatorial climate like Malaysian environment will be selected. At the initial stage, planting of all types of indoor
    plants will be done, from sowing seed until all plants grow up. In the next stage, all plants will be tested to determine
    their effectiveness to improve indoor air quality. The comparison of data before and after installation of indoor plants
    is made. To gain the benefits of indoor plants, detailed study should be done in terms of response and monitoring of
    indoor air. The reason of this study is to provide benefits to building occupants. Besides, having the interior plants as
    part of decoration items may improve workers’ productivity and reduce stress.

    Indoor pollution increasingly becomes a public concern. These concerns are related to energy efficiency in a
    building. There are various ways in which it can ensure energy conservation can be achieved, including superinsulation
    and reduced fresh air exchange. As a result, indoor air becomes stagnant and odours, thereafter contaminants of air will
    accumulate and will certainly disrupt human health. It is quite difficult to make people comfortable in a building with
    consumption of energy-saving and human health guaranteed. Indoor plants are one of the alternative solutions that
    have been studied since the last three decades. This paper intends to review the abilities of indoor plants to purify air,
    and the ways used by previous researchers to prove that indoor plants can treat the air. In general, it can be stated that
    indoor plants are able to absorb various types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). An advantage of indoor plants
    to cure air from carcinogen gas is greatly needed for human health. Therefore, studies on indoor plants to neutralize
    the air are gaining attention. Enclosed space or chamber is often used by researchers to test the ability of indoor plants
    absorb gaseous toxins in their study; because it is easy to handle and can quickly determine the absorption rate. In the
    other hand, environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and light are important to be taken into consideration
    during the study. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the existence of indoor plants in a building is very reasonable,
    because it can give positive impacts on human health and the total energy consumption.

    The cultivation of indoor plants in indoor environment has become a topic of interest among researchers worldwide for its
    potential to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). However, the adaptations of environmental factor of each plant need to be investigated
    to correspond with the native environment. The study investigate the capability of plants selected to live indoor. Before experiment was
    conducted, all plants selected were assimilated with indoor environment for two months. Photosynthesis proses in this experiment will
    be a guidance to determine the comparative for every plant. The portable photosynthesis system equipment (LI-COR 6400) was used to
    determine the level of photosynthesis rate for each of plants. Accordingly, among of all plants tested, Spider Plant showed less effective
    to be grown with indoor environment by the rate of photosynthesis value up to -0.15. Moreover, light compensation point (LCP) of
    Spider Plant also indicated the light intensity consumption was 2960 lux which is extremely higher than 300 lux. As a conclusion, only
    six plants in this study which are Anthurium, Dumb Cane, Golden Pothos, Kadaka Fern, Prayer Plant, and Syngonium are able to
    survive with indoor environment. In the next stage of study, this six plants may give good results to enhance the IAQ.

    Construction industry is one of the major contributors towards Malaysian economy and socio-economy. It is an important
    industry gearing Malaysia towards developed nation status. However, fatalities in this industry are a crucial problem. Number of
    fatalities in this industry is the highest compare to other industries registered in Malaysia. The contributing factors can be separated
    into immediate (human and worksite elements) and underlying (management and external). Occupational safety and health (OSH)
    management is a challenge in the construction industry due to its hazardous nature. A framework of construction OSH management
    consisting of policy, process, personnel and incentive elements were tested. 13 respondents from 13 residential projects comprising of
    high-rise and low-rise in Pulau Pinang were interviewed. It was found that the immediate factors are being more recognized by the
    respondents compare to the underlying factors. Human element is perceived as the most significant contributor, while the external
    element is the least significant. In terms of construction OSH management, process and personnel elements are the most significant in
    developing an effective OSH management programme.

    communication, full compliance and good behavior) as among the crucial elements required to be possessed by the principal employers in three sectors, namely manufacturing, public services and construction. In relation to this, this paper will describe the development and validation of instruments prior to the measurement of principal employers’ roles and responsibilities in the implementation of OSH. Three assessment tools were developed, namely the Benchmarking Interview, Questionnaire and Workplace Inspection. Fifteen companies were selected for the benchmarking interview, 50 employers conveniently selected for the survey interview (covering three sectors) and 90 employers selected for the workplace inspection (30 respondents for each sector). The development of benchmarking interview and workplace inspection scores are briefly discussed while the main focus is on the validation of the survey constructs (or items). The reliability check on 53 items representing four elements (i.e., Commitment, Communication, Compliance, Behaviour) of employers’ roles and responsibilities in the implementation of OSH showed that the Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient is more than 0.90 which indicates that the internal consistency is extremely reliable. It also indicates that the set of items in each element are closely related and well understood by the respondents. Validity check on the items based on the Rasch measurement infit and outfit mean square statistics and standardized z-score found that nine items had misfitting values and finally corrected for further analysis. This study had shown that a valid and reliable instruments are important in ensuring that accurate and precise findings are obtained in measuring the roles and responsibilities of principal employer in the implementation of OSH.

    Indoor air pollution is rapidly becoming a major health issue worldwide. The quality of indoor air inside building
    is important not only for occupants’ comfort but also for their health. Although researches are still under way to
    better define the nature and extent of the health implications for the general population, recent studies have shown
    significant amounts of harmful pollutants in the indoor environment. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) has been tied to
    symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. In this study,
    occupants’ comfort satisfaction on IAQ of a museum building environment in a tropical climate will be studied. IAQ
    aspects which will be considered as parameters are chemical contaminants, gaseous pollutant and comfort factors
    (temperature, humidity and air movement). Museum, archives, library, heritage building and gallery are the types of
    buildings that can be considered as heritage building environment. At the initial stage, a pilot study will be conducted
    to identify the current IAQ conditions inside those selected buildings.

    The trends of safety incident process have been put in the statistical research and development in order to prevent
    and mitigate the phenomenon. One of the incidents is known as dust explosion. It represents a constant hazard to
    industries which includes any manufacturing using and handling combustible dust materials. Lack of sharing and
    know-how on best practices in managing the workplace must be avoided throughout the industries. The severity and
    the consequences of not taking the safety precautions at workplace have not been foreseen by the process team. This
    present paper discusses the best practices in managing the hazards from the catastrophes to happen again. In addition,
    the mitigation response has also been explored thoroughly through database of best practices.

    Transport of fuel is essential to ensure supplies are delivered as per requested by the industrial sites or other demands. Numerous accidents have been reported and recorded in which loss of containment of hazardous chemicals occurred and led to disastrous outcomes. This paper presents the analysis of Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE) due to loss of containment for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) road tankers. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential consequences resulting from overpressure blast and thermal radiation of tankers carrying LPG to the people and the surrounding. The aim is also to compare the outcomes obtained from PHAST software simulator 8.11 with that of established mathematical model. Malaysia North-south Expressway (NSE) was selected as the location of the incident. The volume, weather parameters and properties of LPG were identified. It was found that the effect of BLEVE on people and structures was catastrophic. The results obtained from the mathematical model were similar with that modelled using PHAST software simulator.

    This paper presents the use of factorial experiments and response surface methodology to determine the best workstation design configuration of an existing electronic industry. The aim is to find the value of physical dimensions that gives the best performance for the workstation. Four performance measures are selected; the cycle time, the metabolic energy expenditure, worker’s posture during the task and lifting limitations. The methodology used in this study consists of two parts. The first part is based on factorial experiments and handles discrete search over combinations of factor-levels for improving the initial solution. In the second part, the solution that was obtained earlier is further refined by changing the continuous factors by using response surface methodology. The result of this optimization study shows that the optimum value of physical dimensions gives a significant improvement for the performance measures of the workstation.

    Emergency in a major hazard installation may cause extensive damage to property and serious disruption both inside and outside the installation. The overall objectives of an emergency plan are: to localise the emergency and, if possible, eliminate it; and to minimise the effects of the accident on people and property. The off-site emergency plan is an integral part of any major hazard control system. In many countries the duty to prepare the off-site plan lies with the local authorities, including Malaysia. Thus, the preparations of written off-site emergency response planning is required to minimize the impact of major accident to the people , property and environment.

    This invention is more on ergonomics scope. This ergonomics rostrum fulfills the ergonomics criteria especially
    when used while standing. The important parts in this invention are rostrum head and platform. The rostrum head is
    adjustable so the users can set the height of rostrum head for their suitability and comfort. Another important part in
    this invention is platform. The purpose of the platform is to help users reach the rostrum head. The platform can flip
    into the rostrum body. This invention can be used by anyone especially for Malaysian people because its designed was
    based on the Malaysian height.

    frequency of motorcycle accidents increases every year. In Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS), a substantial number of motorcycle accidents occurred between the year 2009 and 2013. The increased number of accidents serves as a wake-up call to the company to come up with a behavioural-based safety system for commuting accident. The objective of this paper is to look into the effectiveness of behavioural-based system in a company. A total of one hundred and thirty (130) respondents participated in the data-collection session for this study. From this data-collection, along with accident data from the company, a number of criteria that contributes to commuting accidents in the company is obtained. At the end of this study, the behavioural-based safety system is applied, thus showing how its implementation assists in curbing the issue of commuting accidents in the company.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted on 83 female electronics factory workers. The respondents comprised 50 exposed workers who use lead alloy solder and 33 unexposed workers. The objective of this study was to assess the lead exposure of these workers. Breathing zone were sampled using air sampling pumps. Dust samples were collected by wipe method. Venous blood collected and blood pressure were measured. All lead analyses were carried out with Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.     Introduction: Workers in hospitals are exposed to various occupational hazards such as high level disinfectants (HLD).
    Disinfection is an essential component of the endoscope reprocessing. In the Endoscopy Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital,
    Succindialdehyde (SA) is used as the disinfectant for endoscope reprocessing. SA has properties that are similar to formaldehyde
    in regard to contact allergies and toxicity. The purpose of this case study is to describe the occurrence of work related symptoms
    (WRS), the proper use of personal protective attire (PPE) and the need of pre-employment health enquiries for those exposed to SA.

    Methodology: This was a cross sectional case study. Twenty eight gastrointestinal assistants (GIA) from the thirty two exposed staff
    working with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit, who fulfilled the study criteria, were given a modified Respiratory
    Surveillance Questionnaire. This questionnaireis used as the health surveillance tool for the staff exposed to the occupational
    respiratory hazard by the Occupational Health Unit, University of Edinburgh. Results: Most of the GIAs complained of headache
    (85.7%), skin irritations (60.7%) followed by 57.1% watery eyes, wheeziness and runny nose. Majority (92.9%) of the GIAs wore
    personal protective equipment (PPE) during the disinfection procedure. Pre-employment enquiries regarding asthma, skin and
    mucosal sensitivity problems and lung function were not made to any of the GIAs. Only 14.3% of them do annual health surveillances.

    Conclusion: Most of the GIAs, 92.9% experienced at least one WRS despite wearing PPE. Staff exposed to the chemical disinfectants
    should wear proper PPE and do annual health surveillances. By practising this, we may avoid WRS and treat the staff accordingly.

    The objectives of this study is to evaluate subjective symptoms and neurobehavioral performances among workers exposed to lead and its relation with blood lead levels. The methodology of this study was restricted to 141 Malaysian battery manufacturing factories male workers with mean (SD) age of 35.2 (9.6) years, years of employment 9.1 (7.1), current blood lead concentration 40.5 (16.8) μg/dl were given WHO neurobehavioral core test battery. Results showed that highly exposed group blood lead level (high ≥ 40 μg/dl) performed less well in 4 of 13 responses reported higher subjective symptoms of weakness of lower limbs and anorexia. Significant correlation was found between blood lead and Digit Symbol, Digit Forward, Digit Backward, Aiming Pursuit Test and Trail B. Regression analysis showed reduction in cognitive, memory and concentration functions at ≤ 30 μg/dl blood lead levels with maximum lead effect at Digit symbol’s score at 40 μg/dl. In conclusion, this study is consistent with the larger body of neurobehavioral tests in lead exposure and has proven the ability of these tests in detecting low level of lead toxicity.

    The incident involving hydrogen release in industry has become a major concern since numerous incidents were observed to have occured over the years. This paper is designed to do the consequence modelling and analysis using PHAST Simulator for the release rate, potential fire and vulnerability to human by lethality versus probit simulated at 5 mm, 35 mm and 70 mm leak scenarios and three types of atmospheric stability at hydrogenation plant in Telok Panglima Garang. The simulation was carried out by inputting data of leak scenario, meteorological data, material data and process data related to the hydrogenation plant. The simulation results were analyzed and discussed on the discharge rate, dispersion concentration and effect of jet fire such as flame length, downwind distance and lethality for radiation intensity level of 4 kW/m2 , 12.5 kW/m2 and 37.5 kW/m2 . Based on the results, the discharge rate and radiation intensity are dependent on the leak sizes regardless of the different atmospheric conditions. However, the dispersion is dependent on both atmospheric stability and leak sizes. Lastly, the lethality and area of impact are simulated from the radiation intensity produced by the jet fire for each leak size. To conclude, adoption of PHAST software is vital for consequence modelling as this software is able to illustrate the outcomes of hazards due to loss of containment and with this will enable related personnel to respond effectively to any hazardous incidents. As a recommendation, hydrogen fixed gas detectors are proposed for installations at specific location after taking into account the smallest leak that may happen which is at 5 mm leak size.

    An awareness of possible risk factor in pesticides, by changing attitude towards the correct technique during spraying and
    changing behavior can increase safety of workers safety as well as performance. However, there is a limited study and not highlighted
    deeply in knowledge, attitude and practices of workers in palm oil plantation issue. Therefore , the objective of this paper is to identify
    the relationship between knowledge, attitude and practices of pesticides among the plantation workers. The quantitative method were
    used in this paper whereby 132 respondents as pesticide sprayer which represent 90% of the population of palm oil workers in Johor.
    The result of spearman correlation indicates that there is significant relationship between knowledge and practices. It shows the
    common pattern of high knowledge resulting high practices of the workers during spraying the pesticides at plantation. There is no
    relationship between knowledge and attitude and between attitude and practice of the workers at the workplace. This paper shows that
    knowledge need to be strengthen in agricultural communities of Johor in order to reduce health problem and sosial issue statistic and
    prevent for any future accident. Human exposure to pesticides is an important health and sosial issue as it usually results in serious
    health problems such as stroke, epilepsy, respiratory disorders and cancer. Death has been known to occur in some places as a result
    of exposures to pesticides. Therefore, more impact knowledge-focused programs need to be arranged and implemented to inculcate
    the better awareness of pesticides among palm oil workers, as without knowledge, people may become less careful and therefore are
    exposed to pesticide poisoning and other long term exposure illness in the future.

    The Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) is the authority responsible to safeguard the occupational safety, health and welfare of workers in Malaysia. Occupational noise-related hearing disorders are the leading type of occupational diseases recorded by DOSH every year. Occupational Health Doctor (OHD) is a competency recognized by DOSH and their scope of duties in industries is currently confined to conduct medical surveillance for workers with hazardous chemical exposure and confined space medical fitness examination. The duties of OHD are good to be expanded by empowering more of their roles in industrial activities involving other legislations under DOSH. The noise exposure regulation under the Factories and Machinery Act (FMA) 1967 has been governing the worker’s exposure to hazardous industrial noise and preventing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) since 1989. However, the provisions of the regulation need to be strengthened in some essential medical elements of the Hearing Conservation Programme (HCP) for a comprehensive prevention of NIHL at the workplace. Recently enacted Occupational Safety and Health (Noise Exposure) Regulations 2019 offer a wider coverage of workers in ten sectors of industries applicable under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994. The current regulatory requirements for management of workplace noise have many improvements compared to the existing law. Enhancement in the medical requirements of industrial audiometry is made prominent by involving OHDs to interpret audiograms and conduct medical examination for workers. The reporting of occupational noise-related hearing disorders to DOSH is outlined better in the new regulation. The occurrence of NIHL and other related hearing disorders are expected to reduce eventually after the introduction of Occupational Safety and Health (Noise Exposure) Regulations 2019. The OHDs will play a pivotal role in industrial audiometry and prevention of hearing disorders among the working population.

    Brush cutting is a commonly performed activity occupationally as well as recreationally in Malaysia. There are various occupational injuries reported related to brush cutting, for example foreign body penetration. There were 11 reported cases of foreign body penetrated in leg of brush cutting workers admitted to orthopaedic ward in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun from the period of January till October 2009. Among the cases, 4 were surgically removed under local anaesthesia and 7 cases performed under general anesthesia. 2 cases reported foreign body penetrated into tibia bone. There were many contributing factors to the injury, which include lack of protective measures for workers, engineering property of brush cutting machine and education on handling of equipment. It is vital to study the factors separately in order to determine and recommend useful preventive measures. However, the actual numbers of cases are under reported and awareness of the problem is undermined.

    The low back is usually associated with the lumbar spine which supports the entire weight of the upper body and significantly, is vital to the body mobility. Injury to the surrounding soft tissues can cause mild to debilitating symptoms due to muscle strain and ligament sprain. The causes of injury to the lower back are probably due to sudden twisting movement, poor posture position at work and manual handling of heavy objects or with twisting or bending movements while lifting. An Ergonomic Risk Assessment was carried out on a dental laboratory worker who complained of unresolved low back ache after a year on treatment and follow up at the outpatient department of a health clinic. From the various investigative methods used, it was found that the worker in question was placed in a situation that will over time encourage her to develop musculoskeletal disease. Our recommendations for change include immediate awareness and training in ergonomic principles of work and to report all cases so that appropriate action can be taken, reassess the workstation and environment of work, job enrichment, and creating a conducive environment for work. Once the changes have been implemented, a review will be necessary in three months time.
