    Epoxides were primarily derived from petroleum-based sources. However, there has been limited research on optimizing the process parameters for epoxidized palm oil-derived oleic acid, resulting in its underutilization. Therefore, this study aimed to optimize the catalytic epoxidation of palm oleic acid concerning the oxirane content by applying ion exchange resin as a catalyst. Epoxidized oleic acid was produced using in-situ-formed performic acid by combining formic acid as the oxygen carrier with hydrogen peroxide as the oxygen donor. The findings revealed that the optimal reaction conditions for producing epoxidized oleic acid with the highest oxirane content were an Amberlite IR-120 catalyst loading of 0.9 g, a molar ratio of formic acid to oleic acid of 1:1., and a molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to oleic acid of 1:1.1. By employing these optimal conditions, the maximum relative conversion of palm oleic acid to oxirane was achieved at 85%. The reaction rate constants (k) based on the optimized epoxidized oleic acid are determined as follows: k11 = 20 mol L-1 min-1, k12 = 2 mol L-1 min-1, and k2 = 20 mol L-1 min-1. The findings validated the kinetic model by showing good agreement between the simulation and experimental data.

    INTRODUCTION: Brain tumour (BT) is a tremendous burden on patients, families as well as the surrounding communities, especially the healthcare services. It can be classified into either a benign slow growing tumour (non-cancerous) and malignant tumour (cancerous). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and pattern of brain tumour admitted to the Neurosurgery Department in Hospital Sultanah Nurzahirah (HSNZ), Terengganu, Malaysia.

    METHODS: This is a retrospective study of incidence and pattern of BT admitted to the Neurosurgery Department in HSNZ. Data was collected from the yearly census of BT registered from 2013 to 2018.

    RESULTS: A total number of 386 new cases of primary BT were registered. The number of cases of BT was found to be lowest among children (0 to 10 years old) with only 4.4% but at peak among elderly aged between 51 to 60 years old (26.2%). As for gender, males constituted about 44.5% (n=172) whereas females accounted for 55.5% (n= 214) of the cases. In total, meningioma was found to have the highest incidence (27.2%) followed by metastases brain tumour (18.1%) and glioma (17.4%).

    CONCLUSIONS: This study has shown that the incidence of BT was led by meningioma which had a high prevalence among the elderly population, followed by metastasis BT and gliomas.

    Introduction: Bowling is an immensely popular, but scarcely researched sport associated with overuse injuries in its participants. The purpose of this study was to investigate and report on the incidence of common upper extremity complaints in elite bowling athletes.

    Materials and methods: All Malaysian national level bowlers (n=39) were evaluated via questionnaire on their upper limb symptoms. A focused, relevant clinical examination was performed on each subject to exclude de Quervain's tenosynovitis, tennis and golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger. The athletes were then allowed to resume bowling for two hours before completing another symptom-related questionnaire.

    Results: Pain was the predominantly observed symptom, with a predilection for the wrist, ring and middle fingers, and thumb. De Quervain's tenosynovitis was found in 53.8% (n=21) of the subjects, with 52.4% and 42.9% of them experiencing pain during and after training, respectively. Other repetitive injury-related disorders were also considerably more common than in their non-playing limb and the general population.

    Conclusion: The incidence of de Quervain's tenosynovitis was exceptionally high in this population. Further studies on sports kinematics are needed to prevent long term morbidities in these athletes.
