Dyeing wastewater was known to have strong color and refractory organic pollutants. In this study irradiation alone was used for dyes wastewater treatment. This paper studies the effect of the concentrations of pollutants to its removal at various dosages using electron beam technology. Irradiation was effective in removing the highly colored and refractory organic compounds. The color removal for initial concentrations of 255 CU, 520 CU, 990 CU and 1900 CU treated using irradiation at 0.5 kGy were 61%, 48%, 28% and 16%, respectively. However, at the dose of 108 kGy and higher, the color removal between 87% and 96% were recorded with no apparent trend. COD removal also reported similar trend but at relatively lower removal percentage. The COD removal at 0.5 kGy for initial COD concentrations of 57 mg/l and 515 mg/l were 10% and 0%, respectively. At irradiation dose of 108 kGy, the removal for initial COD concentrations of 57 mg/l and 515 mg/l were 37% and 13%, respectively. This showed that concentrations of pollutants and dose of irradiation applied to remove color and COD were dependent to each other.
INTRODUCTION: Our study was to examine prevalence and treatment outcomes of medical emergencies at two urban public health clinics in the Petaling district, Selangor, Malaysia.
METHODS: A prospective universal sampling was employed to recruit all emergencies over one month period (12 April to 11 May 2011). A structured case record form was used to capture demographic data, whether the index case was selfpresenting or decided by health care workers as a medical emergency, presenting complaints, diagnoses, concurrent chronic diseases and their treatment outcomes at the clinic level. Emergency presentations and diagnoses were classified according to the International Classification of Primary Care, revised second edition (ICPC-2-R).
RESULTS: A total of 125 medical emergencies with 276 presenting complaints were recorded. The mean age was 30.7 years old (SD 19.9). The prevalence of medical emergency was 0.56% (125/22,320). Chief complaints were mainly from ICPC-2-R chapter R (respiratory system) and chapter A (general and unspecified), 40.0% and 28.0% respectively. The most common diagnosis was acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma (34.6%). Forty percent were referred to hospitals. After adjusting for age and gender, patients who presented with painful emergency (OR 4.9 95% CI 2.0 to 11.7), cardiovascular emergency (OR 63.4 95% CI 12.9 to 310.4) and non-respiratory emergency were predictors of hospital referral (OR 4.6 95% CI 1.1 to 19.1).
CONCLUSION: There was about one medical emergency for every 200 patients presenting to these urban public polyclinics which were mainly acute asthma. More than half were discharged well and given a follow-up.

There has been no recent report on the dermatoglyphics of the Malays (normal population as well as patients with Down's syndrome). A study on the frequencies of the dermal patterns (dermatoglyphics) of the digits, palms and hallucal areas was done therefore in 40 Malay patients with Down's syndrome and 200 unrelated normal controls. Only the patients with the standard 21 trisomy karyotype were included in the study. Comparison was made with the published data on studies done in various racial groups. Significant differences of the dermal patterns were found not only between the controls but also among patients of different races.
Aim: To characterize mutations in penA, mtrR, ponA, and porBIB, considered target genes for antimicrobial resistance, in Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ceftriaxone cultured from patients in New Zealand. Results: Out of 28 isolates supplied by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research Limited (ESR), Porirua, New Zealand, 14 were found to show reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone (MIC of 0.06 mg/L) according to criteria used by the ESR and the Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Programme (AGSP) when tested in our laboratory. Rates of resistance to ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, penicillin, and tetracycline were 100% (28/28), 7% (2/28), 36% (10/28), and 25% (7/28), respectively. Ten different penA (Penicillin binding protein 2 [PBP2]) sequences were observed. The most common mosaic penA M-1 resembled mosaic penA XXXIV, which has been associated with ceftriaxone treatment failures in other countries. Four semimosaic PBP2 sequences were observed and may be novel PBP sequences, while four out of five nonmosaic PBP2 sequences were similar to PBP2 sequences reported in Australia. Twenty-one isolates harbored mutations in all 4 genes (penA, mtrR, porBIB, and ponA), and 13 of these exhibited reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone. Conclusion: Mutations in penA, mtrR, porBIB, and ponA observed in this study may have contributed to reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone among New Zealand gonococcal isolates. Over half (16/22) of mosaic penA sequences from the gonococcal isolates resembled penA XXXIV.
What are the factors that predict international students' destination-loyalty intention? This is the main question this paper addresses, using an online survey among 396 (short-term, N = 182) and (long-term, N = 214) international students at a Norwegian university. Structural equation model-AMOS was conducted to examine relationships among personal values, subjective well-being and destination-loyalty intentions. The results showed that: (1) universalism was positively related to subjective well-being for short-term students; and (2) subjective well-being was positively related to destination-loyalty intention for all groups. We found that relatively stable and happy individuals might be important for ensuring destination-loyalty intentions. Results also indicated that personal values that emphasize justice and equity are also important for short-term international students' well-being.
INTRODUCTION: Diabetes-related distress (DRD) refers to patient's concerns about diabetes mellitus, its management, need of support, emotional burden and access to healthcare. The aim of this study was to translate and examine the psychometric properties of the Malay version of the 17-item Diabetes Distress Scale (MDDS-17) in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D).
METHODS: A standard procedure was used to translate the English 17-items Diabetes Distress Scale into Malay language. We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with principal axis factoring and promax rotation to investigate the factor structure. We explored reliability by internal consistency and 1-month test-retest reliability. Construct validity was examined using the World Health Organization quality of life-brief questionnaire, Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire and disease-related clinical variables.
RESULTS: A total of 262 patients were included in the analysis with a response rate of 96.7%. A total of 66 patients completed the test-retest after 1 month. EFA supported a three-factor model resulting from the combination of the regimen distress (RD) and interpersonal distress (IPD) subscales; and with a swapping of an item between emotional burden (EB; item 7) and RD (item 3) subscales. Cronbach's α for MDDS-17 was 0.94, the combined RD and IPD subscale was 0.925, the EB subscale was 0.855 and the physician-related distress was 0.823. The test- retest reliability's correlation coefficient was r = 0.29 (n = 66; p = 0.009). There was a significant association between the mean MDDS-17 item score categories (<3 vs ≥3) and HbA1c categories (<7.0% vs ≥7.0%), and medication adherence (medium and high vs ≥low). The instrument discriminated between those having diabetes-related complication, low quality of life, poor medication adherence and depression.
CONCLUSION: The MDDS-17 has satisfactory psychometric properties. It can be used to map diabetes-related emotional distress for diagnostic or clinical use.
