    Objectives: To assess the occlusal features, tongue habits, lip competence and their gender dimorphism in 12 years old Malaysian Malay school-children.

    Materials and methods: The method involved cl inical examination of 208 subjects from public schools in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. Occlusal status was assessed according to Angle classification. The following features were also assessed and recorded: overjet, overbite, traumatic overbite, crowding, spacing, midline diastema, cross bite, scissors bite, dental midline shifts, canine displacement, missing teeth, traumatically fractured teeth, tongue thrust and lip competence. Descriptive statistics were used for all measurements; Chi-square was used to assess gender differences.

    Results: Class I malocclusion is most prevalent in boys and girls (44.0% and 43.8% respectively), followed by Class Ill malocclusion (31% in boys and 30 .4% in girls). Anterior crowding was found in 69.7% of the sample while anterior spacing was found in 30.8%. Incompetent lips were more common in boys than gir1s.

    Conclusions: The prevalence of malocclusion in this age group may warrant the need for more preventive and interceptive measures in dental and oral health planning.

    Objectives: To evaluate the effect of light-cure devices and curing times on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets.

    Material and Methods: 60-extracted human premolars were divided into 6-groups of 10-teeth each and bonded with stainless-steel brackets by using 3M Unitek Transbond XT composite. Specimens were cured with halogen, LED and plasma arc lights with two different times for each. The specimens were subjected to shear force till debond with a crosshead speed of 1mm/min and tested after 5min. The stress was calculated and data were subjected to statistical analysis.

    Results: one-way ANOVA and Dunnett T3 post hoc comparison test were used. There were no significant differences between the 6 groups (p < 0.05).

    Conclusions: all curing light methods with loading force after 5 min achieved SBS more than the normal range; therefore, arch wire can be inserted at the same visit using any of tested curing light device or curing time.

    Objectives: To assess interradicular spaces of maxilla and mandible in subjects with class I sagittal skeletal relationship as an aid for miniscrew placement. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 47 adult subjects with class I skeletal relationship. Interradicular spaces were obtained at the alveolar processes from first premolar to second molar at 2 different vertical levels (6 and 8mm) from the cementoenamel junction (C.E.J). Results: In the maxilla, the highest inter-radicular space existed between second premolar and first molar. In the mandible, the highest interradicular space existed between first and second molar. All mandibular measurements were higher than their respective maxillary measurement. Generally, availability of interradicular space increases apically in both arches, but the difference is not significant. In the maxilla, male subjects’ measurement were significantly higher at 8 mm level between second premolar and first molar and between first and second molar Conclusions: Interradicular spac-es in the maxillary and mandibular alveolar spaces are available for miniscrew placement. In both arches, a more apical location provides more interradicular space. However, careful planning is needed to avoid sinus perforation.

    There is a major concern about the increased use of antibiotics in dental practice and the emergence of resistant bacterial strains. In recent years, dentists have reported a shift from narrow-spectrum to broad-spectrum antibiotic prescriptions due to increasing antibiotic resistance. The aims of this study are to investigate the prescribing patterns of the therapeutic and prophylactic use for antibiotics in various dental situations by dental practitioners. The study also specifically investigates the prescribing habits of dental practitioners regarding certain cardiac conditions and related dental procedures in patients predisposed to infective endocarditis. This study utilized a questionnaire which was designed to investigate the antibiotic prescribing patterns by dental practitioners in the Klang Valley region. The returned questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS, to identify compliance to antibiotic guidelines by Malaysia National Clinical Guidelines (MNCG) (2003) and American Heart Association Guidelines (AHAG) (2008). 217 dentists responded to the questionnaire and the responses show that there is a wide variety of antibiotic prescriptions among dentists and there is also misuse of antibiotics in some clinical dental conditions. The results also show that there is a large variation in the antibiotic prescriptions patterns for prophylaxis against infective endocarditis. Furthermore, there is uncertainty as to which cardiac conditions required prophylaxis and for which particular dental procedures. This study concludes that there is a clear need for the development of prescribing guidelines, regular monitoring of antibiotic prescriptions by dental practitioners and educational initiatives to encourage the rational and appropriate use of the antibiotics.

    This study aimed to evaluate surface roughness (SR) changes with surface treatments and shear bond strength (SBS) of two prefabricated and one laboratory-made composite veneer systems. The prefabricated groups, Edelweiss (EDL) and Componeer (CMP) while, SR Nexco (NEX) was a laboratory-made group. A total of hundred twenty samples, comprising 40 samples for each group were divided into four subgroups of surface treatment (n=10): (a) no treatment (control), (b) 9% hydrofluoric acid (HF), (c) abrasion with a high-speed diamond bur and (d) sandblast with aluminum trioxide (Al2O3) particles. A profilometer was used to evaluate the SR before and after surface treatments applications. Stereo electron microscope was utilized to assess changes occurred on the surface texture of the veneers. For SBS test, the prepared veneer was uploaded over an epoxy resin mould. Two cylindrical adhesive resins were bonded binary and perpendicular over the inner surface of the veneer and tested using Universal Testing Machine (SHIMADZUTM, Japan).     ABSTRACT
    Aims: This study aims to evaluate the impact of the clinical teachers and the effectiveness of their supervisory
    skills in clinical settings from the dental students’ perception using the cognitive apprenticeship model. Materials
    and Methods: A total of 273 undergraduate clinical dental students, from Faculty of Dentistry UiTM, were asked
    to complete the modified and validated Maastricht Clinical Teaching Questionnaire (MCTQ) which consists of
    twenty-seven questions distributed on seven domains: Modelling, Coaching, Scaffolding, Articulation, Reflection,
    Exploration and General Learning Environment. The responses were descriptively analysed. Results: The clinical
    experience of 162 dental students, who responded, was evaluated. Overall, the students conveyed positive and
    neutral perceptions of their clinical experience in all criteria of the seven domains. Articulation domain showed
    the highest positive feedback (93.5%) while the general learning environment domain showed the highest negative
    feedback (28.1%). Conclusions: The clinical experience and the impact of the clinical teachers were mostly
    satisfactory. Further improvements of the clinical environment can be achieved regarding the areas of concern.
