This study was carried out to extract and compare the characteristic ability of globulins from cottonseed, alfalfa seed, pea seed, mung bean and French bean with cocoa seeds to produce cocoa-specific aroma precursors. The extracted globulins were compared through SDS PAGE, amino acid and oligopeptide profiles. A very low recovery was obtained during globulin extraction from different seeds ranging from 0.5% to 2.7%. Cottonseed produced the highest total protein (13.90 mg/g), followed by cocoa seed (11.91 mg/g), whereas alfalfa seed, mung bean, pea seed and French bean produced 7.86, 4.77, 4.59 and 3.89 mg/g respectively. Two distinctive bands of 51.1 and 33.0 kDa were observed for cocoa vicilin-class globulin (VCG) from SDS PAGE. More than three bands were shown for other seed globulins. Comparative HPLC analyses of the obtained peptide mixtures revealed different and complex patterns of predominantly hydrophobic peptides. A similar high content of amides (glutamic acids-glutamine, aspartic acid- asparagine and arginine) and low concentrations of lysine were observed in all seeds globulin.
Mutation is known to occur before the development of various types of cancers.
Mutation in p53 gene can be found in human breast cancer. The aim of the present
study was to determine the correlation between p53 protein expressions with women in premenopausal age. A total of 111 breast cancer tissues were examined for p53
protein expression by IHC. The results showed that majority (36.9%; n=41/111)
who were more than 41 yrs, overexpressed positive p53 (+) protein category and
2.7% (n=3/111) aged 41 yrs and less, showed less positive p53 (+) protein category.
However, the Fishers exact test, indicated that, there was no significant correlation
between participant’s age group with p53 protein category (χ2
(1) = 0.78; p =0.52)
and no correlation strength was indicated (Cramer’s V coefficient = 0.08; p
=0.37), respectively. The risk estimate showed probability of p53 (+) protein being
overexpressed in the age group < 41 yrs was 0.66 times less likely compared to the
age group > 41 yrs. In conclusion, with or without overexpression of p53 protein,
women above 41 yrs were found to have greater risk.
BACKGROUND: The Malaysian Ministry of Health promotes breast self-examination (BSE) for all women, and Pap smear screening every three years for all sexually active women ages 20 years and above. The objectives of this paper were to examine the practice of these two screening tests among women production workers in electronics factories, and to identify factors related to practice. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of women production workers from ten electronics factories. Data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire from a total of 1,720 women. The chi-square test, odds ratio and binomial logistic regression were used in bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Prevalence rates were 24.4% for BSE once a month, and 18.4% for Pap smear examination within the last three years. Women who were significantly more likely to perform BSE every month were 30 years and older, Malays, with upper secondary education and above, answered the BSE question correctly, and had a Pap smear within the last three years. The proportion of women who had a Pap smear within the last three years were significantly higher among those who were older, married, with young children, on the contraceptive pill or intra-uterine device, had a medical examination within the last five years, answered the Pap smear question correctly, and performed BSE monthly. CONCLUSION: Screening practice rates in this study were low when compared to national rates. Socio-demographic and health care factors significantly associated with screening practice are indicative of barriers which should be further understood so that more effective educational and promotional strategies could be developed.
A total of 486 Malaysian women electronics workers participated in a study of reproductive health knowledge and cancer screening. The practice of Breast Self Examination (BSE) was found to be related to educational attainment; while ever having had a Pap smear was found to be related to being older than 30 years old, being ever married, living with family or relatives, and not staying in hostels. Knowledge on reproductive health was found to be higher for older women, married women, living with family or relatives, not staying in hostels, ever having done BSE and ever having had a Pap smear.
