    Satu kajian keratan rentas telah daalanlcan ke atas kanak-lcanak yang tinggal 0.5 km dari sebuah lcuari di Sungai Siput Utara. Objelctif kajian ini ialah untulc mengkaji hubungan PM10 dengan fungsi paru-paru kanak-kanak tersebut. Seramai 51 orang kanak-/canak yang ringgal berhampiran kuari dan terdedah dengan debu kaur tehih dipilih, manakala 37 orang kanak-kanak yang tinggal berjauhan tetapi di daerah yang sama telah dipilih sebagai perbandingan untuk lag ian ini. Borang soalselidik telah digunakan untuk mendapatlcan maklumat latarbelakang dan sejarah respiratori dari ibu bapa kanalc-kanak terlibat. Fungsi paru-paru kanak-kanak pula diukur dengan menggunakan Pony Graphic S pirometer. Min kepekatan PM1 0 selama 24 jam di dalam rumah kediaman di kawasan terdedah ialah 76.66 (g/m3 dan di kawasan perbandingan 41 .55 (g/m3. Perbezaan kepekatan PM10 di antara kedua kawasan ini adalah signifikan (p=0.01). Hasil ujian fungsi paru-paru menunjukkan perbezaan yang signifikan di antara fungsi paru-paru kanalc-kanalc terdedah dengan kanak-kanak perbandingan dari segi FVC % jangkaan (t = -8.227, p = 0.01) dan FEV1 % jangkaan (t = -8.729, p = 0.01). Min fungsi paru-paru kanak-kanak lelaki di kawasan terdedah, (FVC % jangkaan = 68.05, FEV1 % jangkaan = 73.71) adalah lebih rendah daripada kawasan perbandingan (FVC % jangkaan= 89.78, FEV1 %~ jangkaan = 86.97). Min fungsi paru-paru kanak-kanak perempuan di kawasan terdedah (FVC % jangkaan= 69.64, FEV1 % jangkaan =74.90) juga adalah lebih rendah daripada hawasan perbandingan ( F VC % jangkaan = 90.99, FEV1 % jangkaan : 87 .7 9).     Conglomerates of continental origin are widely distributed in the Eastern Belt of the Malay Peninsular. Murau Conglomerate is the best example. Similar deposits outcrop at Pulau Redang, Pulau Kapas and Bukit Keluang. With an exception of Pulau Redang Conglomerate, similarities in lithologic, sedimentologic and stratigraphic characters of these conglomerates suggested that they can be combined into one group. Their stratigraphic position that is overlying the Upper Paleozoic unconformities reveals that these rock units are representing the basal part of the continental sediments that are found in the Eastern Belt. The sediments have been deposited as early as in the Late Permain and the deposition continued until Triassic. This interpretation is based on the occurrence of the Upper Paleozoic unconformities in the Eastern Belt and also on the age of sediments beneath the unconformities at Pulau Redang. The uplift that gives rise to this unconformity may be attributed to the granite emplacement in the Eastern Belt in the Late Permian-Early Triassic time. This was followed by depositions of the basal conglomerate mentioned above. The basal conglomerates were then overlain by fined grained sediments which are represented by Panti Sandstone, Lotong Sandstone and other equivalent deposits of Jurassic Cretaceous age.
    Konglomerat endapan benua banyak tertabur di lalur Timur Semenanjung Malaysia. Konglomerat Murau adalah satu contoh yang terbaik. Konglomerat yang mempunyai, ciri-ciri yang sama terdapat di beberapa lokaliti di Pulau Redang, Pulau Kapas dan Bukit Keluang. Ciri-ciri litologi sedimentologi dan stratigrafi kesemua konglomerat ini mencadangkan bahawa mereka boleh dikumpulkan di dalam satu kumpulan yang. sama kecuali Konglomerat Pulau Redang. Kedudukannya langsung di atas satah ketakselarasan Paleozoik Atas mencadang unit-unit konglomerat ini merupakan bahagian dasar kepada sedimen kebenuaan yang terdapat di Jalur Timur dan mungkin juga di jalur Tengah. Sedimen ini mula terendap semenjak Perm Akhir hingga Trias berdasarkan ketakselarasan yang terdapat di Jalur Timur dan juga usia sedimen di bawah satah ketakselarasan yang terdapat di Pulau Redang. Pengangkatan yang berkaitan mungkin terhasil daripada perejahan granit di Jalur Timur semasa Perm Akhir-Trias Awal. Pengangkatan ini diikuti oleh pemendapan konglomerat dasar yang disebut di atas. Pengenapan seterusnya diikuti oleh sedimen berbutir lebih halus yang menindihnya yang diwakili oleh Batu Pasir Panti, Batu Pasir Lotong dan yang lain-lain yang setara dengannya yang mungkin berusia Jura-Kapur.

    This study was conducted for 3 main purposes: 1) to determine if there was blue colour deficiency amongst diabetes mellitus (IDDM and NIDDM) patients without retinopathy, 2) to determine if the Dl5 test could be used to detect any colour vision defects amongst diabetics without retinopathy (all previous workers have used FM 100-Hue), and 3) to assess the performance of diabetics without retinopathy in detecting correct colour changes with the urine strip test. Thirty eight non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and 30 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients without retinopathy participated in this study. A control group of 23 normal subjects were also included in the study. Dl5 colour vision test was performed under daylight conditions. Colour dependent urine glucose test (Glukotest) was also performed on all subjects. The study showed that 47.1% of diabetics (47.4% NIDDM and 46.7% IDDM patients) without retinopathy had a blue colour deficiency. Amongst the diabetics with a blue colour deficiency, 25% of diabetics (22% of NIDDM and 28.6% of IDDM patients) failed to accurately match the strip colour with the comparison chart on the bottle.
    Kajian ini dilakukan untuk 3 tujuan: I) untuk menentukan samada terdapat gangguan penglihatan warna biru dalam pesakit diabetes mellitus (IDDM dan NIDDM) tanpa retinopati, 2) untuk menentukan samada ujian penglihatan warna Dl5 boleh digunakan untuk mengesan defek penglihatan warna dalam pesakit diabetes tanpa retinopati (kesemua kajian terdahulu menggunakan ujian FM 100-Hue). dan 3) untuk menilaikan prestasi pesakit diabetik tanpa retinopati dalam mengesan perubahan warna yang betul dengan menggunakan ujian strip urin. Tiga puluh lapan pesakit dengan non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) dan 30 pesakit dengan insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) tanpa retinopati menyertai kajian ini. Kumpulan kawalan mengandungi 23 orang subjek yang normal juga terlibat di dalam kajian ini. Ujian penglihatan warna Dl5 dilakukan di bawah cahaya daylight. Ujian glukos urin berasaskan warna (Glukotest) dilakukan ke atas semua subjek. Kajian menunjukkan 47.1% pesakit diabetes (47.4% pesakit NIDDM dan 46.7% pesakit IDDM) tanpa retinopati mengalami defisiensi warna biru. Dalam kumpulan diabetik dengan defisiensi warna biru, 25% pesakit diabetes (22.2% adalah pesakit NIDDM dan 28.6% adalah pesakit IDDM) gagal untuk memadankan dengan tepat warna strip dengan carta perbandingan warna di atas botol.

    Anomalies in DNA replication, repair and recombination in ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) point to a defect in structure or function of chromatin. In this study we have compared DNA-protein binding in nuclear extracts from control and A-T cells using two assay systems, filter-binding and DNA-accessibility. Interestingly, the extent of DNA protein binding over a range of protein concentration was significantly lower in A-T extracts. In addition the accessibility of the restriction enzyme Eco R1 to protein-bound plasmid was greater when A-T extracts were used. This is in keeping with the reduced binding observed in the filter-binding assay.

    DNA topoisomerase type I and II activities were determined by serial dilution in nuclear extracts from control and ataxia-telangiectasia lymphoblastoid cells. Topoisomerase I activity, assayed by relaxation of supercoiled plasmid DNA, was found to be approximately the same in both cell types. In order to remove interference from topoisomerase I, the activity of topoisomerase II was measured by the unknotting of knotted P4 phage DNA in the presence of ATP. The activity of topoisomerase II was markedly reduced in two ataxia-telangiectasia cell lines, AT2ABR and AT8ABR, compared to controls. This reduction in activity was detected with increasing concentration of protein and in time course experiments at a single protein concentration. A third cell line, AT3ABR, did not have a detectably lower activity of topoisomerase II when assayed under these conditions. The difference in topoisomerase II activity in the ataxia-telangiectasia cell lines examined may reflect to some extent the heterogeneity observed in this syndrome.
