RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: To find out the correlation between frequency of playing online games and teen communication on students' Level I & II of STIKes Muhammadiyah Palembang.
RESEARCH METHOD: the research method use was quantitative descriptive research with Cross Sectional approach using Purposive Sampling as the technique of collecting data with a simple of 262 out of 760 populations. The instrument used in the form of a questionnaire about the frequency of playing online games and teen communication made by the researcher and has been tested for validity and reliability. This research was conducted in March-April 2019.
RESULT: From the results of the study, most of the respondents with 116 respondents (82.3%) had passive communication with the frequency of playing online games often, and a small number of respondents with 2 respondents (2.9%) had aggressive communication with the frequency of playing online games sometimes. The result test of Chi Square was obtained a value P value=0.000 (<0.05) CONCLUSION: There was a correlation between frequency of playing online games and teen communication on students' level I & II STIKes Muhammadiyah Palembang.
METHOD: A descriptive, analytical quantitative with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study. The total of 95 nurses agreed to participate by using random sampling. Data collection using a structured questionnaire and observational form. The statistical model with a chi-square analysis was used in this study.
RESULTS: The result showed a correlation between knowledge and nurse practice with OR 3.257 (1.375-7.715; p=0.012), attitude and nurse practice with OR 4.286 (1.775-10.345; p=0.002) training and nurse practicewith OR value 5.455 (2.233-13.322; p=0.000).
CONCLUSIONS: Local authority in the hospital must apply patient safety standards to reduce injury rates, both nurses and patients. Nurses need to follow the current trend of nursing science focusing on patient safety.
METHOD: This study used an analytic descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach with a population of 115 and the sample used was 85 people. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires. Questionnaires were used assess about nurses' knowledge, nurses' attitudes, and nurses' behavior in providing spiritual nursing care.
RESULTS: The results of bivariate analysis found a relationship between knowledge and behavior of nurses in the provision of spiritual nursing care with p value 0.010 (α=0.05). But there is no relationship between attitudes with nurses' behavior in providing spiritual nursing care with p value 1.000 (α=0.05).
CONCLUSION: Nurses' knowledge of nursing care can influence nurses' behavior in providing spiritual nursing care to patients.
METHOD: The research design was quantitative. Face-to-face survey method based on a given questionnaire was conducted with all the targeted respondents. The methodology used was a non-experimental descriptive research design. Total of 146 respondents out of 243 populations were selected using a stratified random sampling strategy to determine the research sample to give equal opportunity.
RESULTS: Findings of hypotheses test using one-way ANOVA indicated that there is a significant difference in attitudes towards the mentoring programme and perceived benefits between different groups of nursing at Training Institute Ministry of Health (Nursing) Sandakan.
CONCLUSION: In general, the mentoring programme had a positive impact. However, the level of attitude and perceived benefit is different among students in different semesters. The overall mean result is good and reflecting nursing students are fairly benefited from the mentoring programme.
BACKGROUND: Effective nursing management only becomes possible when nurse managers are able to manage and maintain the right equilibrium among human capital components.
METHOD: We developed an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model with 8 dimensions and 31 indicators based on extensive literature review and experts' perceptual assessment. We used expert and purposive sampling and invited 82 nursing professionals to rate the importance of these dimensions and indicators. The AHP process was performed to identify the weightage and prioritize the dimensions and indicators of the nursing human capital.
RESULTS: Our analysis showed that, for nursing human capital, health was the most important factor (weight: 34.8%), followed by employee protection (20.4%), work attitude (13.7%), employee stability (10.8%), general nursing training (6.3%), competencies (5.8%), advanced nursing training (4.3%) and clinical nursing experience (3.9%).
CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The model would be most useful for nurse administrators in long-range strategic management. Specifically, the model can be used as a reference to form a rating system to analyse nursing human capital. Health promotion programs and employee protection measures targeting nurses could improve nursing human capital in hospitals.
METHOD: Post-basic students (staff nurses and medical assistants) were given real life pictures showing the wound and periwound area. The students were asked to classify all pictures according to the HPSC at zero months (before attachment) and after two months of attachment. The images were the same but the answers were never given or discussed after the first test.
RESULTS: A total of 30 post-basic students participated in the study, assessing wound 30 images. The results showed that there was an increase of 25.42% in accuracy of wound assessment using the HSPC after two months of clinical attachment compared to pre-attachment. The reliability of the HPSC in wound assessment 79.87%.
CONCLUSION: Health professionals have to be able to assess and classify wounds accurately to be able to manage them accordingly. Assessment and classifications of the periwound skin are important and need to be validated and integrated as a part of a full wound assessment. With experience and adequate training, health professionals are able to comprehensively assess wounds using the validated tool, to enable effective wound management and treatment, accelerating wound healing and improving the quality of life for patients.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of peer learning on professional competence development among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students.
DESIGN: A quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control group pre-test post-test design.
PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants. Seventy-five students completed the study (37 in the intervention group and 38 in the control group).
METHODS: The intervention group received the peer learning program, while the control group received conventional learning during clinical practice. The Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) was used to collect data at pre-test and post-test measurement. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
RESULTS: Professional competence had significantly increased in the intervention group. A significant interaction effect of time (pre-test and post-test) and group on professional competence development was also found. The effect of peer learning on professional competence development was significantly greater than the conventional method.
CONCLUSION: Peer learning was demonstrated as an innovative learning method to develop professional competence during clinical practice among Indonesian undergraduate nursing students. It is recommended for nurse educators to consider implementing peer learning during clinical education.
METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 549 nurses recruited via multistage cluster sampling. Nurses completed the demographic questionnaire and Health Sciences Reasoning Test (HSRT).
RESULTS: The majority of respondents failed to demonstrate critical thinking skills with a mean overall HSRT score of 13.8 (SD = 3.4). Educational qualifications (p = .003) and clinical specialties (p = .022) were significantly related to nurses' critical thinking skills. Years of clinical experience, age, and job ranking were not significant CONCLUSION: The findings indicate a need to address the present curriculum in nursing education and to reinforce critical thinking skills in the nursing workforce. Future research on how nurses in Malaysia acquire critical thinking skills is needed. [J Contin Educ Nurs. 2020;51(3):109-117.].
PURPOSE: The purpose of this review was to summarize and appraise the methodological quality of primary studies on interventions for management of occupational stress among intensive and critical care nurses.
METHODS: This review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify primary studies that assessed the effectiveness of interventions in managing occupational stress among intensive and critical care nurses using multiple databases from January 2009 to June 2019.
RESULTS: Twelve studies published between 2011 and 2019 were eligible for inclusion. These included studies were classified as being of good or fair quality. The consensus across the included studies was that, compared with control condition, cognitive-behavioural skills training and mindfulness-based intervention were more effective in reducing occupational stress among intensive and critical care unit nurses.
CONCLUSION: Further research should focus on methodologically strong studies by blinding the outcome assessors, using Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design with an active control group, using standardized assessment tools, and reporting enough details about the stress management intervention-related adverse events.
RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This review demonstrates the need for high methodological quality studies to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of stress management interventions before it can be recommended for use in clinical practice to reduce stress in intensive and critical care unit nurses. In addition, attention should be given to developing research protocols that place more emphasis on interventions aimed at the organization level to address the growing problem of occupational stress among intensive and critical care nurses.
AIMS: To investigate nurses' perceptions of risk factors for phlebitis in a tertiary teaching hospital in north-east Peninsular Malaysia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 199 randomly selected nurses were surveyed for their perceptions of risk factors for phlebitis using a self-administered questionnaire.
FINDINGS: More than half of the nurses (56.8%) had a good perception levels of risk factors for phlebitis. There was a significant association between the clinical area and nurses' perceptions of risk factors for phlebitis (p=0.04). Nurses working in medical, orthopaedic, and surgical areas had slightly better perceptions than nurses working in multidisciplinary and oncology areas.
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that nurses need to continually improve their knowledge about risk factors for phlebitis to ensure safer nursing practice.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 12 private hospitals in Malaysia. A total of 652 (response rate = 61.8%) nurses participated in the study. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire on nurses' characteristic, adverse events and events reporting, and perceived patient safety.
RESULTS: Patient and family complaints events were the most common adverse events in Malaysian private hospitals as result of increased cost of care (3.24 ± 0.95) and verbal miscommunication (3.52 ± 0.87).
CONCLUSION: Hospital size, accreditation status, teaching status, and nurse ethnicity had a mixed effect on patient safety, perceived adverse events, and events reporting. Policy makers can benefit that errors are related to several human and system related factors. Several system reforms and multidisciplinary efforts were recommended for optimizing health, healthcare and preventing patient harm.
