OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the duration and frequency of betel quid chewing behaviour on periodontitis severity and the life quality of people in Tanini Village, Kupang Regency, Indonesia.
METHODS: The type of this study was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. We used a questionnaire to obtain sociodemographic data. Oral Health Survey Basic Methods were used to measure debris index, plaque index, bleeding on probing, loss of attachment, and pocket depth. Behaviour and quality of life were measured by questionnaire and WHOQOL-BREF method as well.
RESULTS: The largest number of respondents were male. Duration of chewing had a significant relationship with the frequency of chewing and periodontal status. Periodontitis was higher compared to all categories. The lifestyle of the community greatly influenced their behaviour in betel nut chewing and also affected the severity of their periodontitis and OHIs significantly.
CONCLUSION: The lifestyle of betel nut chewing of the people in Tanini Village, greatly influences their behaviour. Prolonged and excessive use of betel nut induced significant adverse effects on human health. The longer and more often chew betel or areca nut, the higher the incidence of periodontitis, which significantly affects the quality of life as there is a possibility of the development of carcinogenesis, particularly in the oral cavity.
METHODS: Twenty-four healthy young male rabbits were divided into two groups: T1, which underwent OTM and received normoxia-preconditioned GMSC, and T2, which underwent OTM and received hypoxia-preconditioned GMSC. A ligature wire was attached to the mandibular first molar and connected to a 50 g/mm2 closed coil spring, exerting force on the central incisor and left mandibular molar of the experimental animals. After 24 h of OTM, either normoxia- or hypoxia-preconditioned GMSC were injected into the gingiva of the samples in a single dose of 20 μl of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). All samples were sacrificed on days 7, 14, and 28, and immunohistochemistry was performed to analyze the expression of RANK, RANKL, and OPG on the tension and compression sides.

METHODS: A systematic search on the PubMed and Embase databases was conducted to identify eligible studies. The last search was done on April 24th, 2020. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tools.
RESULTS: Of the 997 articles identified, 31 articles were included in this review. Seven studies targeted students in preschools, seventeen in elementary schools, and seven in high schools. Most of these studies revealed positive outcomes. Some studies showed that the school-based oral health promotion programmes showed better OHK, OHB, OHS, and OHRQoL.
CONCLUSION: Positive results were obtained through oral health promotion programmes in schools, especially those involving children, teachers, and parents.
