    The objective of this study was to develop biodegradable active film to improve the shelf-life of minimally processed fresh-produce. Guar gum (GG) based films with improved properties were fabricated by employing tween-80 (0.88%) as emulsifier, nanoclay (13.9%) as reinforcement, beeswax (1.21%) for hydrophobicity, glycerol (3.07%) as plasticizer, and grape pomace extract (5%) as active ingredient (%w/w of GG). Active films had a tensile strength of 122 MPa and water vapor transmission rate of 69 gm-2d-1. Films demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonella Typhimurium. The 2 kGy irradiated minimally processed pomegranate arils packed in film demonstrated a shelf-life of 12 days as compared to 4 days for unirradiated samples. The observed improvement in shelf-life was due to a radiation-induced release of antimicrobial volatiles from active films as confirmed by headspace analysis using GC-MS. Suitability of active films for food irradiation applications is thus demonstrated.

    Laryngeal hemangiomas are relatively rare. Laryngeal hemangiomas occur in two main forms--infantile and adult laryngeal hemangiomas. While infantile hemangiomas are usually found to occur in the subglottis, adult hemangiomas occur commonly in the supraglottic regions of the larynx. Laryngeal hemangioma with cavernous features isolated to the free edge of the vocal fold is a very rare clinical finding. We present a case of hemangioma of the right vocal cord in an adult, which was managed successfully in our center.

    A prospective study of acute renal failure (ARF) over a three month period showed that 60 out of 22,033 inpatients developed AR"F (Serum creatinine exceeding 0.200 mmol/L). The ARF was oliguric in 22% and nonoliguric in 78%. Poor cardiac output or diminished intravascular volume, nephrotoxins and infections were the main aetiological factors associated with ARF in 85% of cases. Mean peak serum creatinine and blood urea values were higher in the oliguric than the non oliguric group. The oliguric group required dialysis more frequently (53.8% vs 4.3%) and had a higher mortality (53.8% vs 8.5%) than the non oliguric group. Nonoliguric ARF occurs more commonly and has a better prognosis than oliguric ARF. Acute renal failure is a serious condition with significant mortality and remains a frequent occurrence in the setting of large general hospitals. A Previous reports on acute renal failure in Kuala Lumpur comprised patients treated at the Department of Nephrology at the General Hospital Kuala Lumpur, but did not include patients with acute renal failure treated at other departments in the hospital. This report is based on a prospective study of acute renal failure occurring in the General Hospital Kuala Lumpur over a three-month period to evaluate the clinical spectrum of this disease, and its outcome.

    We use individual-based information on the behavior of wild female Japanese macaques in two consecutive years with different food availability (nut-rich vs. nut-poor) to test effects of dominance rank and nut fruiting on seed dispersal parameters. We predicted that social rank would affect dispersal (1) quantity, (2) quality, (3) species richness, and (4) percentage of berries in the diet in the nut-poor year, while these differences would disappear in the nut-rich year. We found seeds of nine fleshy-fruited plant species in the feces of the monkeys. The frequency of seed occurrence for two plant species (Viburnum dilatatum and Rosa multiflora) showed an interaction between dominance ranks and years; in the nut-poor year V. dilatatum seeds were more abundant among dominant females and R. multiflora among subordinates, while such inter-rank differences disappeared in the nut-rich year. Similarly, the intact ratio of V. dilatatum seeds was lower for dominants in the nut-poor year, while inter-rank variations disappeared in the nut-rich year. Finally, percentage of berries in diet and seed richness showed no inter-annual nor inter-rank variations. Our study highlights that differences in individuals' social rank lead to within-group variation in seed dispersal services and that these differences are dependent on nut availability.

    Introduction: Optimum perioperative fluid therapy is important to improve the outcome of the surgical patient. This study prospectively compared goal-directed intraoperative fluid therapy with traditional fluid therapy in general surgical patients undergoing open major bowel surgery.

    Methodology: Patients between 20 and 70 years of age, either gender, ASA I and II, and scheduled for elective open major bowel surgery were included in the study. Patients who underwent laparoscopic and other surgeries were excluded. After routine induction of general anaesthesia, the patients were randomised to either the control group (traditional fluid therapy), the FloTrac group (based on stroke volume variation), or the PVI group (based on pleth variability index). Fluid input and output, recovery characteristics, and complications were noted.

    Results: 306 patients, with 102 in each group, were enrolled. Five patients (control (1), FloTrac (2), and PVI (2)) were inoperable and were excluded. Demographic data, ASA PS, anaesthetic technique, duration of surgery, and surgical procedures were comparable. The control group received significantly more crystalloids (3200 ml) than the FloTrac (2000 ml) and PVI groups (1875 ml), whereas infusion of colloids was higher in the FloTrac (400-700 ml) and PVI (200-500 ml) groups than in the control group (0-500 ml). The control group had significantly positive net fluid balance intraoperatively (2500 ml, 9 ml/kg/h) compared to the FloTrac (1515 ml, 5.4 ml/kg/h) and PVI (1420 ml, 6 ml/kg/h) groups. Days to ICU stay, HDU stay, return of bowel movement, oral intake, morbidity, duration of hospital stay, and survival rate were comparable. The total number of complications was not different between the three groups. Anastomotic leaks occurred more often in the Control group than in the others, but the numbers were small.

    Conclusions: Use of goal-directed fluid management, either with FloTrac or pleth variability index results in a lower volume infusion and lower net fluid balance. However, the complication rate is similar to that of traditional fluid therapy. This trial is registered with CTRI/2018/04/013016.

    This review emphasizes the role of toxic metal remediation approaches due to their broad sustainability and applicability. The rapid developmental processes can incorporate a large quantity of hazardous and unseen heavy metals in all the segments of the environment, including soil, water, air and plants. The released hazardous heavy metals (HHMs) entered into the food chain and biomagnified into living beings via food and vegetable consumption and originate potentially health-threatening effects. The physical and chemical remediation approaches are restricted and localized and, mainly applied to wastewater and soils and not the plant. The nanotechnological, biotechnological and genetical approaches required to more rectification and sustainability. A cellular, molecular and nano-level understanding of the pathways and reactions are responsible for potentially toxic metals (TMs) accumulation. These approaches can enable the development of crop varieties with highly reduced concentrations of TMs in their consumable foods and vegetables. As a critical analysis by authors observed that nanoparticles could provide very high adaptability for both in-situ and ex-situ remediation of hazardous heavy metals (HHMs) in the environment. These methods could be used for the improvement of the inbuilt genetic potential and phytoremediation ability of plants by developing transgenic. These biological processes involve the transfer of gene of interest, which plays a role in hazardous metal uptake, transport, stabilization, inactivation and accumulation to increased host tolerance. This review identified that use of nanoremediation and combined biotechnological and, transgenic could help to enhance phytoremediation efficiency in a sustainable way.

    In a two-dimensional (2D) optical spectrum of a multilevel system, there are diagonal peaks and off-diagonal cross-peaks that correlate the different levels. The time-dependent properties of these diagonal peaks and cross-peaks contain much information about the dynamics of the multilevel system. The time-dependent diagonal peakshape that depends on the spectral diffusion dynamics of the associated transition and characterized by the frequency-fluctuation correlation function (FFCF) is well studied. However, the time-dependent peakshape of a cross-peak that provides the correlation dynamics between different transitions is much less studied or understood. We derived the third-order nonlinear response functions that describe the cross-peaks in a 2D electronic spectrum of a multilevel system that arise from processes sharing a common ground state and/or from internal conversion and population transfer. We can use the center line slope (CLS) analysis to characterize the cross-peaks in conjunction with the diagonal peaks. This allows us to recover the frequency-fluctuation cross-correlation functions (FXCFs) between two transitions. The FXCF and its subsidiary quantities such as the initial correlation and the initial covariance between different transitions are important for studying the correlation effects between states in complex systems, such as energy-transfer processes. Furthermore, knowledge of how various molecular processes over different timescales affect simultaneously different transitions can also be obtained from the measured FXCF. We validated and tested our derived equations and analysis process by studying, as an example, the 2D electronic spectra of metal-free phthalocyanine in solution. We measured and analyzed the diagonal peaks of the Qx and Qy transitions and the cross-peaks between these two transitions of this multilevel electronic system and obtained the associated FFCFs and FXCFs. In this model system, we measured negative components of FXCF over the tens of picosecond timescale. This suggests that in phthalocyanine, the Qx and Qy transitions coupling with the solvent molecule motion are anticorrelated to each other.

    BACKGROUND: The expanding world population is expected to double the worldwide demand for food by 2050. Eighty-eight percent of countries currently face a serious burden of malnutrition, especially in Africa and south and southeast Asia. About 95% of the food energy needs of humans are fulfilled by just 30 species, of which wheat, maize, and rice provide the majority of calories. Therefore, to diversify and stabilize the global food supply, enhance agricultural productivity, and tackle malnutrition, greater use of neglected or underutilized local plants (so-called orphan crops, but also including a few plants of special significance to agriculture, agroforestry, and nutrition) could be a partial solution.

    RESULTS: Here, we present draft genome information for five agriculturally, biologically, medicinally, and economically important underutilized plants native to Africa: Vigna subterranea, Lablab purpureus, Faidherbia albida, Sclerocarya birrea, and Moringa oleifera. Assembled genomes range in size from 217 to 654 Mb. In V. subterranea, L. purpureus, F. albida, S. birrea, and M. oleifera, we have predicted 31,707, 20,946, 28,979, 18,937, and 18,451 protein-coding genes, respectively. By further analyzing the expansion and contraction of selected gene families, we have characterized root nodule symbiosis genes, transcription factors, and starch biosynthesis-related genes in these genomes.

    CONCLUSIONS: These genome data will be useful to identify and characterize agronomically important genes and understand their modes of action, enabling genomics-based, evolutionary studies, and breeding strategies to design faster, more focused, and predictable crop improvement programs.

    INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 vaccines have been highly effective in reducing morbidity and mortality during the pandemic. However, the emergence of the Omicron variant and subvariants as the globally dominant strains have raised doubts about the effectiveness of currently available vaccines and prompted debate about potential future vaccination strategies.

    AREAS COVERED: Using the publicly available IVAC VIEW-hub platform, we reviewed 52 studies on vaccine effectiveness (VE) after booster vaccinations. VE were reported for SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic infection, severe disease and death and stratified by vaccine schedule and age. In addition, a non-systematic literature review of safety was performed to identify single or multi-country studies investigating adverse event rates for at least two of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines.

    EXPERT OPINION: Booster shots of the current COVID-19 vaccines provide consistently high protection against Omicron-related severe disease and death. Additionally, this protection appears to be conserved for at least 3 months, with a small but significant waning after that. The positive risk-benefit ratio of these vaccines is well established, giving us confidence to administer additional doses as required. Future vaccination strategies will likely include a combination of schedules based on risk profile, as overly frequent boosting may be neither beneficial nor sustainable for the general population.

    In low concentration, fluoride is considered a necessary compound for human health. Exposure to high concentrations of fluoride is the reason for a serious disease called fluorosis. Fluorosis is categorized as Skeletal and Dental fluorosis. Several Asian countries, such as India, face contamination of water resources with fluoride. In this study, a comprehensive overview on fluoride contamination in Asian water resources has been presented. Since water contamination with fluoride in India is higher than other Asian countries, a separate section was dedicated to review published articles on fluoride contamination in this country. The status of health effects in Asian countries was another topic that was reviewed in this study. The effects of fluoride on human organs/systems such as urinary, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, brain, and reproductive systems were another topic that was reviewed in this study. Different methods to remove fluoride from water such as reverse osmosis, electrocoagulation, nanofiltration, adsorption, ion-exchange and precipitation/coagulation were introduced in this study. Although several studies have been carried out on contamination of water resources with fluoride, the situation of water contamination with fluoride and newly developed technology to remove fluoride from water in Asian countries has not been reviewed. Therefore, this review is focused on these issues: 1) The status of fluoride contamination in Asian countries, 2) health effects of fluoride contamination in drinking water in Asia, and 3) the existing current technologies for defluoridation in Asia.
