    In this paper, we analyze the spatio-temporal distribution of vegetation fires in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo in the severe El Niño year of 2015, concentrating on the distribution of fires between mineral soils and peatland areas, and between land cover types in peatland areas. The results reveal that 53% of all Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) fire detections were recorded in peatlands that cover only 12% of the study area. However, fire occurrence in the peatland areas was highly dependent on land cover type. Pristine peat swamp forests (PSF) experienced only marginal fire activity (30 fire detections per 1000 km2) compared to deforested undeveloped peatlands (831-915 fire detections per 1000 km2). Our results also highlight the extreme fire vulnerability of the southern Sumatran and Bornean peatlands under strong El Niño conditions: 71% of all peatland hotspots were detected in the provinces of South Sumatra and Central Kalimantan, which contain 29% of peatlands in the study area. Degraded PSF and all deforested peatland land cover types, including managed areas, in the two provinces were severely affected, demonstrating how difficult it is to protect even managed drained agricultural areas from unwanted fires during dry periods. Our results thereby advocate rewetting and rehabilitation as the primary management option for highly fire prone degraded undeveloped peatland areas, whenever feasible, as a means to reduce fire risk during future dry episodes.

    In light of concerns relating to improper waste disposal and resources preservation, reclamation of the discarded glass in construction materials had been extensively carried out since 1963. In the past decade, although more than 100 papers associated with the use of glass powder (GP) in the micron level scale were published, comprehensive review of all practical applications in cement-based materials and construction products is not available. This paper therefore provides a summary of the body of knowledge on the interaction and effects of using GP in cement-based and extended construction materials. This review concludes that GP is an innovative and promising eco-supplementary cementitious material. Beyond that, use of GP is demonstrated to be potentially beneficial as a precursor in geopolymer and suitable for manufacturing eco-cement, artificial lightweight aggregate and composite phase change material. The multiple applications of GP are seen as an important step towards waste glass recycling as a sustainable construction material and for the overall betterment of the industry.

    The Artocarpus heterophyllus, native to Western Ghats of India, Malaysia and south-eastern Asia, is a tree member of the mulberry family (Moraceae). Chloroplast genome sequences play a significant role in the development of molecular markers in plant phylogenetic and population genetic studies. In this study, we report the complete chloroplast genome sequence of A. heterophyllus for the first time. The chloroplast genome is 160,387 bp long and includes 113 genes. Its LSC, SSC and IR regions are 88,422, 18,869 and 26,548 bp long, respectively. Phylogenetic tree analysis exhibited that A. heterophyllus was clustered with other Moraceae species with high bootstrap values.

Its LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 88,123, 18,861, and 25,468 bp long, respectively. Phylogenetic tree analysis exhibited that L. nervosa was clustered with other Sapotaceae species with high bootstrap values.

    Aedes mosquitoes can efficiently transmit many pathogenic arboviruses, placing a great burden on public health worldwide. In addition, they also carry a number of insect-specific viruses (ISVs), and it was recently suggested that some of these ISVs might form a stable species-specific "core virome" in mosquito populations. However, little is known about such a core virome in laboratory colonies and if it is present across different developmental stages. In this study, we compared the viromes in eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes collected from a lab colony and compared each to the virome of different developmental stages collected in the field. The virome in lab-derived A. albopictus was very stable across all stages, consistent with a vertical transmission route of these viruses, and formed a possible "vertically transmitted core virome." The different stages of field-collected A. albopictus mosquitoes also contained this stable vertically transmitted core virome, as well as another set of viruses (e.g., viruses distantly related to Guadeloupe mosquito virus, Hubei virga-like virus 2, and Sarawak virus) shared by mosquitoes across different stages, which might represent an "environment-derived core virome." To further study this core set of ISVs, we screened 48 publicly available SRA viral metagenomic data sets of mosquitoes belonging to the genus Aedes, showing that some of the identified ISVs were identified in the majority of SRAs and providing further evidence supporting the core-virome concept.IMPORTANCE Our study revealed that the virome was very stable across all developmental stages of both lab-derived and field-collected Aedes albopictus The data representing the core virome in lab A. albopictus proved the vertical transmission route of these viruses, forming a "vertically transmitted core virome." Field mosquitoes also contained this stable vertically transmitted core virome as well as additional viruses, which probably represented "environment-derived core virome" and which therefore were less stable over time and geography. By further screening publicly available SRA viral metagenomic data sets from mosquitoes belonging to the genus Aedes, some of the identified core ISVs were shown to be present in the majority of SRAs, such as Phasi Charoen-like phasivirus and Guadeloupe mosquito virus. How these core ISVs influence the biology of the mosquito host and arbovirus infection and evolution deserves to be further explored.

    Flavor is a crucial parameter for assessing the sensory quality of yak milk. However, there is limited information regarding the factors influencing its taste. In this study, the effects of endogenous lipoprotein lipase (LPL) on the volatile flavor components of yak milk under storage conditions of 4 °C, 18 °C and 65 °C were analyzed via headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) combined with orthogonal partial least-squares (OPSL) discrimination, and the reasons for the changes in yak milk flavors were investigated. Combined with the difference in the changes in volatile flavor substance before and after the action of LPL, LPL was found to have a significant effect on the flavor of fresh yak milk. Fresh milk was best kept at 4 °C for 24 h and pasteurized for more than 24 h. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were employed to characterize the volatile components in yak milk under various treatment conditions. Twelve substances with significant influence on yak milk flavor were identified by measuring their VIP values. Notably, 2-nonanone, heptanal, and ethyl caprylate exhibited OAV values greater than 1, indicating their significant contribution to the flavor of yak milk. Conversely, 4-octanone and 2-heptanone displayed OAV values between 0.1 and 1, showing their important role in modifying the flavor of yak milk. These findings can serve as monitoring indicators for assessing the freshness of yak milk.

    A novel series of 1,8-naphthalimide piperazinamide based benzenesulfonamides derivatives were designed and synthesized as carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX) inhibitors and ferroptosis inducers for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The representative compound 9o exhibited more potent inhibitory activity and selective against CA IX over off-target CA II, compared with positive control SLC-0111. Molecular docking study was also performed to gain insights into the binding interactions of 9o in the binding pocket of CAIX. Moreover, compound 9o exhibited superior antitumor activities against breast cancer cells under hypoxia than that of normoxia conditions. Mechanism studies revealed that compound 9o could act as DNA intercalator and effectively suppressed cell migration, arrested the cell cycle at G1/S phase and induced apoptosis in MDA-MB-231 cells, while inducing ferroptosis accompanied by the dissipation of MMP and the elevation intracellular levels of ROS. Notably, in vivo studies demonstrated that 9o effectively inhibited tumor growth and metastasis in a highly metastatic murine breast cancer 4 T1 xenograft model. Taken together, this study suggests that compound 9o represents a potent and selective CA IX inhibitor and ferroptosis inducer for the treatment of TNBC.

    OBJECTIVES: To determine the significance of tumour PTEN protein expression in endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC) and it is correlation with tumour characteristics.

    METHODS: A total of 30 eligible archived paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from 61 EEC cases (January 2015-December 2017) were retrieved from the Histopathology Laboratory in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) following institutional ethic approval. For PTEN protein detection, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining was performed and the data was correlated with clinicopathologic parameters.

    RESULTS: Fourteen samples (46.7%) showed positive PTEN protein expression, while 16 (53.3%) were negative. The mean age was 62.00 ± 9.51 years old, while the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) was 27.28 ± 7.16 kg/m2. There was no significant difference between age (p=0.27, 95% CI: -10.98 to 3.21) and BMI (p=0.67, 95% CI: -4.30 to 6.58) with PTEN protein expression. There were significant correlation between PTEN protein expression with myometrial invasion (p=0.010), but not with lymphovascular space invasion (p=0.743), grade (p=0.532), stage (p=0.733) and CA-125 level (p=0.47). The higher stage correlates with the presence of LVSI (p=0.002). PTEN positive associated with longer disease-free-interval (p=0.025), but not improving the overall survival (p=0.38).

    CONCLUSIONS: Positive PTEN protein expression correlates with less myometrial invasion.
