    Widespread and inadequate use of Monocrotophos has led to several environmental issues. Biodegradation is an ecofriendly method used for detoxification of toxic monocrotophos. In the present study, Msd2 bacterial strain was isolated from the cotton plant growing in contaminated sites of Sahiwal, Pakistan. Msd2 is capable of utilizing the monocrotophos (MCP) organophosphate pesticide as its sole carbon source for growth. Msd2 was identified as Brucella intermedia on the basis of morphology, biochemical characterization and 16S rRNA sequencing. B. intermedia showed tolerance of MCP up to 100 ppm. The presence of opd candidate gene for pesticide degradation, gives credence to B. intermedia as an effective bacterium to degrade MCP. Screening of the B. intermedia strain Msd2 for plant growth promoting activities revealed its ability to produce ammonia, exopolysaccharides, catalase, amylase and ACC-deaminase, and phosphorus, zinc and potassium solubilization. The optimization of the growth parameters (temperatures, shaking rpm, and pH level) of the MCP-degrading isolate was carried out in minimal salt broth supplemented with MCP. The optimal pH, temperature, and rpm for Msd2 growth were observed as pH 6, 35 °C, and 120 rpm, respectively. Based on optimization results, batch degradation experiment was performed. Biodegradation of MCP by B. intermedia was monitored using HPLC and recorded 78% degradation of MCP at 100 ppm concentration within 7 days of incubation. Degradation of MCP by Msd2 followed the first order reaction kinetics. Plant growth promoting and multi-stress tolerance ability of Msd2 was confirmed by molecular analysis. It is concluded that Brucella intermedia strain Msd2 could be beneficial as potential biological agent for an effective bioremediation for polluted environments.

    κ-Carrageenan films derived from Euchema cottoni containing different types and concentrations of emulsifier were developed. Film formation without the addition of emulsifier was used as a control. The physical, mechanical, optical and microstructural properties of these films were determined. Different types of emulsifiers (Tween 20, Tween 40 and Tween 80) exerted significant effects (P≤0.05) on the thickness, moisture content and opacity of the films. Additionally, Tween 20 and Tween 40 with concentrations from 0.1 to 0.5% (v/v) significantly (P≤0.05) improved the tensile strength of the films, ranging from 7.35 to 13.83MPa. The water vapor permeability of the carrageenan films was significantly (P≤0.05) affected by both factors. Increasing the emulsifier concentration also caused an increment in the number of lipid droplets contributing to a smooth surface. Therefore, this study suggests that different types and concentrations of emulsifiers play essential roles in determining the physical properties of carrageenan films.

    Fibres from banana’s stem are abundantly available in Malaysia. This study focused on the production
    of woven fabric from banana pseudo-stem fibres. Yarn made of 100% banana stem and 100% cotton
    yarn were produced. Two types of retting techniques were conducted, which are water retting and
    retting using softening agent. The fibres were spun and weaved into plain weave fabric. All specimens
    were evaluated for yarn twist, yarn evenness, yarn linear density and selected fabric physical
    properties. The results obtained showed that banana stem fabric treated with softening agent has lower
    area density and higher thickness. Weft sample retted in softening agent has higher bending length and
    flexural rigidity than sample retted in water. This might be due to the decrement of yarn’s stiffness,
    which eases the insertion of yarn during shedding process. Weft sample retted in water has lower
    bending length due to coarser yarn and tends to break easily. It is found that retting banana stem fibres
    with softening agent affect the yarn linear density, area density, fabric stiffness properties and flexural
    rigidity of the fabric.

    Pilling is one of the fabric faults that originally found in knitted woolen goods especially made from soft twisted yarns. The rubbing action on loose fibres that is present on the fabric surface gives a high tendency to form pills which gives poor appearance to the fabric. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of repeated launderings on the propensity of pilling formation by using pill grade machine. The primary objective of this study was to determine the pilling behaviour of different types of weft knitted fabrics after a repeated number of laundering cycles. The study was conducted using two types of knitted fabrics; cotton and polyester with three types of knitted structures; interlock, 1x1 rib and plain jersey. The various number of laundering cycles were given on the fabrics and followed by 15,000 revolutions of ICI pilling box. The results showed that polyester fibre has better pilling resistance due to its exceptional strength, whilst in terms of fabric structure, plain jersey showed an excellent resistance. This is due to the higher density and compact structure that it possessed.

    The Silver Reed Model LK150 knitting machine is a home knitting machine which is
    extremely lightweight and compact, making it preferable by most home knitters.
    There are various knitwears with interesting patterns can be made using this model. In
    the field of garments manufacturing by using flatbed knitting machines, it is
    important to understand the physical properties of fabric so that their impact on
    dimensional changes can be predicted to produce the most suitable end use. The
    samples were produced by using a blended bamboo/cotton yarn, with a composition
    of 30% cotton and 70% bamboo. The main objectives of this study are to to evaluate
    the physical properties of single jersey fabric knitted on home knitting machine by
    using different stitch dials and to relate the physical properties with different stitch
    lengths. Then, all tests were conducted to compare the physical properties of samples
    between three different stitch dials and the effects of before and after washing. The
    physical properties measured in this research were stitch length, stitch density, weight,
    thickness, absorbency and shrinkage. The result indicated that the longer the stitch
    length, the higher the percentage of the water impact penetration. Meanwhile, there
    was a slight reduction on the density, thickness and fabric weight. In addition, the
    result after three times washing showed that the samples only had slight changes in
    density, thickness, weight and stitch length, but has significant changes on the water
    impact penetration.

    This research was conducted in order to investigate rumen degradability of some factors includes; Dray Matter (DM), Organic Matter (OM), Crude Protein (CP), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) in three different plant protein supplements includes; soybean, canola and cottonseed meal. The experiment was carried out using in three castrated and fistulated male Zel sheep. Each feedstuff was weighed into duplicate nylon bags and incubated in each of the three rumen fistulated sheep for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h. Results revealed that effective degradability of DM of soybean, canola and cottonseed meal were 55.8, 73.8 and 48.5%, respectively. Effective degradabilities of the CP in feedstuffs were 55.8, 62 and 48.3% for the respective feedstuffs. Effective degradabilities of the OM were 55.7, 56.4 and 47.4%, respectively. Results also showed that effective degradabilities of the ADF were 55, 56.4 and 37.6, respectively. According to the results the researchers concluded that canola and soybean were more degradable in the rumen of the sheep while cottonseed meal were less degradable and, hence resulted in higher rumen undegradable protein.

    The anti-inflammatory activity of zerumbone (1), a natural cyclic sesquiterpene isolated from Zingiber zerumbet Smith was investigated using carrageenan-induced paw edema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma tissue formation test in mice. It was demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of 1 at a dose of 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg/kg produced significant dose-dependent inhibition of paw edema induced by carrageenan. It was also demonstrated that 1 at similar doses significantly suppressed granulomatous tissue formation in cotton pellet-induced granuloma test.
