AIM: To determine the usefulness of prednisolone in increasing the number of Toxoplasma (T.) gondii tachyzoites and bradyzoites in mice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mice were water-fasted prior to being immunosuppressed with oral inoculation of prednisolone. Tachyzoites of 7T gondii RH strain were inoculated into mice and the number of the parasites in the intraperitoneal fluids was then determined at 96 hs post-infection. In addition, tachyzoites of T. gondii ME49 strains were orally introduced into mice and the number of brain cysts formed was observed by microscopic observation at 45 days post-infection.
RESULTS: T. gondii propagation was found to be significantly improved by introduction of the prednisolone (p = 0.0004); and the number of parasite showed positive correlation with the increment in dosage of prednisolone (r = 0.9051).
CONCLUSIONS: The use of prednisolone greatly improved the number of parasite formed in mice: both tachyzoite and cyst forms.

Bell's palsy is a benign lower motor neuron facial nerve disorder. It is almost always unilateral. We report a 20-year-old nulliparous woman with five episodes of recurrent Bell's palsy. A review of recent medical literature revealed a paucity of case reports involving an individual with five episodes of recurrent Bell's palsy, with none found in Asian neurology medical literature. Despite the multiple episodes of Bell's palsy recurrences, the patient did not suffer much neurological sequelae from the disease.

    1. This study examines the effect of Hoe 140, a bradykinin (BK) 2 receptor antagonist, indomethacin and prednisolone on chronic adjuvant arthritis of the knee in rats. We also evaluated the influence of Hoe 140 on BK-forming enzymes in the synovial and paw tissues. 2. Adjuvant arthritis was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats in the right knee by injecting 0.05 ml of a fine suspension of heat-killed Mycobacterium tubercle bacilli in liquid paraffin (5 mg/ml). 3. Hoe 140 (1.5 mg/kg i.p.), indomethacin (2.5 mg/kg orally) and prednisolone (3.0 mg/kg orally) administration for 9 days resulted in significant suppression of knee joint swelling. Plasma and tissue kallikrein levels were raised (P < 0.01) in the synovial and paw tissues of adjuvant arthritic rats. Hoe 140 treatment reduced (P < 0.05) tissue kallikrein but increased (P < 0.01) plasma kallikrein levels in synovial tissue. 4. Hoe 140 treatment did not alter (P > 0.05) the raised plasma and tissue kallikrein levels in the paw tissue. The findings indicate that Hoe 140 may be a useful anti-inflammatory agent and BK plays a major role in this adjuvant-induced arthritis model.

CONTEXT: The tuber of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson (Araceae), commonly called Suran or Jimmikand, has high medicinal value and is used ethnomedicinally for the treatment of different gastrointestinal and inflammatory disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluated the effects of extracts of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius tubers on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in rats.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar rats were orally administered methanol extract (APME) or aqueous extract (APAE) (250 and 500 mg/kg) or standard drug, prednisolone (PRDS) (4 mg/kg) for 7 days. On 6th day of treatment, UC was induced by transrectal instillation of 4% acetic acid (AA) and after 48 h colitis was assessed by measuring colitis parameters, biochemical estimations and histology of colon.

RESULTS: APME or APAE pretreatment significantly (p
