    We use data sets from the Cyrtodactylus brevipalmatus group with limited genetic and morphological sampling to demonstrate that not accounting for sampling error may adversely influence decisions regarding species delimitation and diagnosis. Lack of geographic sampling between the endpoints of a species range may recover notable interpopulational genetic differentiation consistent with species-level differentiation. Additionally, small population sample sizes may fail recover statistically different diagnostic morphological differences. Combined, these types of sampling error can produce results seemingly consistent with the recognition of cryptic speciesgenetically delimited populations lacking diagnostic morphological characters. This is the current situation within some lineages of the C. brevipalmatus group whereas in others, sampling error is less problematic and does not jeopardize their taxonomy. We note the potential negative effects for comparative biology as a whole if sampling error is not taken into consideration prior to constructing taxonomies.

    In this study, new distributional records are given for 98 species and subspecies of Darwin wasps of the subfamily Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) from Maritime Southeast Asia, namely from Indonesia and Malaysia: Sabah. Four genera, 31 species and three subspecies are described as new. The new genera are: Atanyjoppoides n. gen., Moluccarches n. gen., Orientodromus n. gen. and Platylaboides n. gen. An annotated catalogue and a distribution map for the genus are also provided.

    Up to date, Eutheimorphus Franz & Lbl included a sole species known from a holotype male collected in Sabah, Borneo. An occurrence of this enigmatic and extremely rare genus in Thailand is reported, and Eutheimorphus thailandicus sp. n. is described. Among diagnostic characters are unique grooves on the head and a symmetrical (in contrast to strongly asymmetrical in E. paradoxus Franz & Lbl) set of endophallic sclerites.

    The armored harvestman family Assamiidae (Arachnida: Opiliones: Laniatores) is widely distributed throughout the Old World tropics, specifically throughout tropical Asia and Central Africa. However, the systematics and intrafamilial relationships of the group remain poorly understood. This can be largely attributed to the complicated taxonomic history of the group, which is exemplified by poorly supported subfamily classifications and the prevalence of monotypic genera. Here, we describe four new species of the formerly monotypic genus Paktongius Suzuki, 1969, using specimens collected from Laos, Thailand, and West Malaysia, suggesting a degree of microendemism within the group, which underscores the need for greater sampling of the southeast Asian arachnofauna. Recent phylogenetic analysis has also suggested that Mysorea thaiensis Suzuki, 1985 nests within a clade composed of Paktongius distinctus Suzuki, 1969 and the species described herein (P. suzukii sp. nov., P. spiculosus sp. nov., P. paritensis sp. nov., P. furculus sp. nov.). We therefore transfer Mysorea thaiensis to Paktongius (P. thaiensis comb. nov.). We also comment on the unique morphology of this highly derived group of harvestmen, which appears to suggest convergent evolution of the gonyleptoid-like morphology, complete with the characteristic exaggerated leg four coxae and laterally expanded scutum.

    The zoogeographic distribution of lophogastrid species (Crustacea: Peracarida: Lophogastrida) occurring in the Indonesian waters is presented. For each species, data on general distribution, bathymetric ranges, habitat and localities reported on published data are provided. A total of 20 lophogastrid species belonging to three families and seven genera occur in Indonesian waters (about 38% of all known lophogastrids species worldwide), a number greater than other areas of Southeast Asia. Also, based on current information, the number of species or species richness is greater than other regions, such as Madagascar, North Pacific off Japan, Mediterranean, Canary Island, northern mid-Atlantic ridge, Iberian Peninsula, Mexico, and Angola Basin (SE Atlantic). Most of the Indonesian species are distributed worldwide, but one species, Lophogaster inermis appears to be endemic to Indonesia. Previous listings of Paralophogaster intermedius occurring in Southeast Asian waters is not verified in any collections, and has therefore been removed from our updated list.

    Three new species of the fungal-inhabiting plant bug genus Punctifulvius Schmitz, 1978 (Cylapinae: Fulviini) are described, namely P. aleksanderi n. sp. from Selangor, Malaysia, P. parvus n. sp. from East Kalimantan, Indonesia, and P. sakaerat n. sp. from Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The present discovery represents the first record of the genus from the Oriental Region. Punctifulvius members are now confirmed to be widespread from the cold temperate climatic zones in the eastern Palearctic regions, across the tropics of the Oriental Region, to the temperate rainforest of Australia. Punctifulvius kerzhneri Schmitz, 1978 is recorded from Taiwan for the first time. The systematic position of Teratofulvioides Carvalho & Lorenzato, 1978 is discussed, and its single species Teratofulvioides punctatus Carvalho & Lorenzato, 1978 is redescribed. Color adult habitus images of Punctifulvius aleksanderi, P. kerzhneri, P. parvus, P. sakaerat, and Teratofulvius punctatus, images of male (P. parvus and P. sakaerat) and female (P. aleksanderi) genitalic structures, as well as scanning electron micrographs of selected structures of P. aleksanderi, P. kerzhneri, P. parvus, P. sakaerat, and T. punctatus are provided. Key to the species of Punctifulvius is given.

    The genus Utivarachna Kishida, 1940 currently comprises 23 species, with eight described from Borneo. We examined the type materials of the Bornean species, except for U. fukasawana Kishida, 1940, as well as newly collected specimens. As a result, we describe a new species, Utivarachna itiokai sp. nov., which belongs to the dusun-group. We also provide the first description of the female of Utivarachna ichneumon and redescribe the known Utivarachna species of Borneo.

    An integrative taxonomic analysis recovers a distinctive new species of the gekkonid genus Cyrtodactylus Gray, 1827 from Satun Province in extreme southern Thailand as the sister species to the Cyrtodactylus intermedius group of southern Indochina, approximately 600 km to the northeast across the Gulf of Thailand. Based on 1449 base pairs of the mitochondrial gene NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) and its flanking tRNAs, the new species, C. disjunctus sp. nov., bears a pairwise sequence divergence from the mean divergences of the intermedius group species ranging from 17.923.6%. Three different principal component analyses (PCA) and a multiple factor analysis (MFA) recover C. disjunctus sp. nov. as a highly distinctive karst cave-adapted species based on morphology and color pattern. Its sister species relationship to the intermedius groupto which it is added herefurther underscores a growing body of analyses that have recovered a trans-Gulf of Thailand connection across the submerged Sunda Shelf between the southern Thai-Malay Peninsula and southern Indochina. Fragmented karstic archipelagos stretching across Indochina have served as foci for the independent evolution of nearly 25% of the species of Cyrtodactylus. The description of C. disjunctus sp. nov. continues to highlight the fact that karstic habitats support an ever-increasing number of threatened site-specific endemics that compose much of the reptile diversity of many Asian nations but, as of yet, most of these landscapes have no legal protection.

    Tegestria altmannae sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on male and female specimens collected in Malaysia. It is characterized by the unarmed dorsal scutum, and basal segment of chelicerae dorsally with three seta-tipped tubercles. The type species of the monotypic genus Gintingius Roewer, 1938, G. robustus Roewer, 1938, is treated as a new synonym of Tegestria coniata Roewer, 1938 and the genus Gintingius as a new synonym of Tegestria Roewer, 1936, accordingly.

    Fire debris analysis aims to detect and identify any ignitable liquid residues in burnt residues collected at a fire scene. Typically, the burnt residues are analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and are manually interpreted. The interpretation process can be laborious due to the complexity and high dimensionality of the GC-MS data. Therefore, this study aims to compare the potential of classification and regression tree (CART) and naïve Bayes (NB) algorithms in analysing the pixel-level GC-MS data of fire debris. The data comprise 14 positive (i.e. fire debris with traces of gasoline) and 24 negative (i.e. fire debris without traces of gasoline) samples. The differences between the positive and negative samples were first inspected based on the mean chromatograms and scores plots of the principal component analysis technique. Then, CART and NB algorithms were independently applied to the GC-MS data. Stratified random resampling was applied to prepare three sets of 200 pairs of training and testing samples (i.e. split ratio of 7:3, 8:2, and 9:1) for estimating the prediction accuracies. Although both the positive and negative samples were hardly differentiated based on the mean chromatograms and scores plots of principal component analysis, the respective NB and CART predictive models produced satisfactory performances with the normalized GC-MS data, i.e. majority achieved prediction accuracy >70%. NB consistently outperformed CART based on the prediction accuracies of testing samples and the corresponding risk of overfitting except when evaluated using only 10% of samples. The accuracy of CART was found to be inversely proportional to the number of testing samples; meanwhile, NB demonstrated rather consistent performances across the three split ratios. In conclusion, NB seems to be much better than CART based on the robustness against the number of testing samples and the consistent lower risk of overfitting.

    Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, poses a significant global health concern due to the excessive accumulation of fat within the liver. If left untreated, this condition can give rise to severe complications. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI, specifically AI-based ultrasound imaging) offer promising tools for diagnosing this condition. This review endeavors to explore the current state of research concerning AI's role in diagnosing fatty liver disease, with a particular emphasis on imaging methods. To this end, a comprehensive search was conducted across electronic databases, including Google Scholar and Embase, to identify relevant studies published between January 2010 and May 2023, with keywords such as "fatty liver disease" and "artificial intelligence (AI)." The article selection process adhered to the PRISMA framework, ultimately resulting in the inclusion of 13 studies. These studies leveraged AI-assisted ultrasound due to its accessibility and cost-effectiveness, and they hailed from diverse countries, including India, China, Singapore, the United States, Egypt, Iran, Poland, Malaysia, and Korea. These studies employed a variety of AI classifiers, such as support vector machines, convolutional neural networks, multilayer perceptron, fuzzy Sugeno, and probabilistic neural networks, all of which demonstrated a remarkable level of precision. Notably, one study even achieved a diagnostic accuracy rate of 100%, underscoring AI's potential in diagnosing fatty liver disease. Nevertheless, the review acknowledged certain limitations within the included studies, with the majority featuring relatively small sample sizes, often encompassing fewer than 100 patients. Additionally, the variability in AI algorithms and imaging techniques added complexity to the comparative analysis. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the potential of AI in enhancing the diagnosis and management of fatty liver disease through advanced imaging techniques. Future research endeavors should prioritize the execution of large-scale studies that employ standardized AI algorithms and imaging techniques to validate AI's utility in diagnosing this prevalent health condition.

    Background Stroke is a significant public health concern characterized by increasing mortality and morbidity. Accurate long-term outcome prediction for acute stroke patients, particularly stroke mortality, is vital for clinical decision-making and prognostic management. This study aimed to develop and compare various prognostic models for stroke mortality prediction. Methods In a retrospective cohort study from January 2016 to December 2021, we collected data from patients diagnosed with acute stroke from five selected hospitals. Data contained variables on demographics, comorbidities, and interventions retrieved from medical records. The cohort comprised 950 patients with 20 features. Outcomes (censored vs. death) were determined by linking data with the Malaysian National Mortality Registry. We employed three common survival modeling approaches, the Cox proportional hazard regression (Cox), support vector machine (SVM), and random survival forest (RSF), while enhancing the Cox model with Elastic Net (Cox-EN) for feature selection. Models were compared using the concordance index (C-index), time-dependent area under the curve (AUC), and discrimination index (D-index), with calibration assessed by the Brier score. Results The support vector machine (SVM) model excelled among the four, with three-month, one-year, and three-year time-dependent AUC values of 0.842, 0.846, and 0.791; a D-index of 5.31 (95% CI: 3.86, 7.30); and a C-index of 0.803 (95% CI: 0.758, 0.847). All models exhibited robust calibration, with three-month, one-year, and three-year Brier scores ranging from 0.103 to 0.220, all below 0.25. Conclusion The support vector machine (SVM) model demonstrated superior discriminative performance, suggesting its efficacy in developing prognostic models for stroke mortality. This study enhances stroke mortality prediction and supports clinical decision-making, emphasizing the utility of the support vector machine method.

    Green synthesis of NPs is preferred due to its eco-friendly procedures and non-toxic end products. However, unintentional release of NPs can lead to environmental pollution affecting living organisms including plants. NPs accumulation in soil can affect the agricultural sustainability and crop production. In this context, we report the morphological and biochemical response of spinach nanoprimed with MgO-NPs at concentrations, 10, 50, 100, and 150 µg/ml. Nanopriming reduced the spinach root length by 14-26%, as a result a reduction of 20-74% in the length of spinach shoots was observed. The decreased spinach shoot length inhibited the chlorophyll accumulation by 21-55%, thus reducing the accumulation of carbohydrates and yield by 46 and 49%, respectively. The reduced utilization of the total absorbed light further enhanced ROS generation and oxidative stress by 32%, thus significantly altering their antioxidant system. Additionally, a significant variation in the accumulation of flavonoid pathway downstream metabolites myricitin, rutin, kaempferol-3 glycoside, and quercitin was also revealed on MgO-NPs nanopriming. Additionally, NPs enhanced the protein levels of spinach probably as an osmoprotectant to regulate the oxidative stress. However, increased protein precipitable tannins and enhanced oxidative stress reduced the protein digestibility and solubility. Overall, MgO-NPs mediated oxidative stress negatively affected the growth, development, and yield of spinach in fields in a concentration dependent manner.

    This study investigates the significance of self-management in academic staff stress management related to social networking sites (SNS). It emphasizes particularly on reducing social media exhaustion and increasing job effectiveness. The research applies the stressor-strain-outcome theory and the Smart PLS (partial least squares) analytical approach to examine data from 391 respondents. The study's goal is to provide empirical data on the efficacy of self-control management in reducing SNS stress and its effects on academic staff's psychological wellbeing and job performance. Data is collected by survey using online email platforms among academic employees, and the collected data is examined utilizing the Smart PLS approach. This approach allows for an investigation of the proposed links and their statistical importance. This research's ramifications are important for academic institutions since its results can help academic personnel effectively cope with SNS-related stress. Academic employees can better limit their SNS usage and avoid social media tiredness by promoting self-control management practices. As a result, academic employees' job performance and overall wellbeing may increase. The study's findings help to comprehend how self-management might reduce SNS stress and improve staff performance in the academic sector.

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Bangladesh's unique epidemiological landscape presents an intriguing puzzle. This South Asian nation, with its complex sociodemographic and environmental factors, is home to a diverse array of hepatitis-B virus (HBV) genotypes, identified as Genotype C, with Genotypes D and A also making a significant contribution to the viral landscape. Reviewing such insights is necessary not only to underscore the country's regional diversity in HBV strains but also to bring into focus the clinical implications these genetic variations may have on disease progression and management.

    METHODS: A thorough database search covered various sources using relevant keywords like "Hepatitis B virus genotypes", "HBV genotypes in Bangladesh", and "HBV clinical implications". The review synthesized findings and analyzed HBV genotype prevalence and clinical implications in Bangladesh.

    RESULTS: Genotypes C and D collectively represent 82% of chronic hepatitis-B infection (CHB) cases in Bangladesh, underscoring their regional prevalence. The geographic context is pivotal in understanding HBV infection dynamics and disease progression in this area. Notably, genotype C and the presence of A1762T/G1764A mutations appear to have a distinct impact on disease development, potentially affecting the immune response in CHB patients. This highlights the need for tailored management approaches in this specific region. Further research is vital to confirm and elaborate on these findings, particularly in relation to how these mutations influence the host's immune response.

    CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In summary, studies on HBV genotypes in Bangladesh stress the need for genotype-specific clinical considerations and more research to improve diagnostics and therapies.
