METHODS: This two-arm quasi-experimental study was conducted in two primary healthcare facilities selected using simple random sampling with opaque envelopes. A total of 524 participants were enrolled using purposive sampling. Data were statistically analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 28 with repeated-measures logistic regression analysis, the Z test for Poisson rates and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
RESULTS: The parental SMS reminders significantly improved the immunisation coverage, as reported by 69 (26.3%) (P=0.001, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 12.2-40.5), 117 (44.7%) (P=0.001, 95% CI=32.6-56.9) and 116 (44.3%) participants (P=0.001, 95% CI=34.2-54.4) for the 6th-, 10th- and 14th-week schedules, respectively. Compared to mothers' involvement, fathers' involvement did not significantly affect the immunisation coverage (B=0.158, P=0.311, 95% CI=-0.148-0.464). With regard to the immunisation timeliness, the parental SMS reminders yielded a significant effect for the 6th-, 10th- and 14th-week schedules (P=0.001, 95% CI=25.9-46.7; P=0.001, 95% CI=24.2-43.0; and P=0.001, 95% CI=21.1-36.9, respectively). Compared to mothers' involvement, fathers' involvement significantly influenced the immunisation timeliness (B=0.298, P=0.038, 95% CI=0.016-0.579). Lastly, the parental SMS reminders significantly reduced the barriers to immunisation, with a P-value of 0.001.
CONCLUSION: Parental SMS reminders can significantly improve immunisation outcomes in Nigeria.
METHODS: In total, 7541 organisms causing documented infections were consecutively collected in 66 centres in 33 countries, excluding the USA. Susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution. Isolates displaying linezolid MIC results of ≥4 mg/L were molecularly characterized.
RESULTS: Linezolid inhibited all Staphylococcus aureus at ≤2 mg/L, with MIC50 results of 1 mg/L, regardless of methicillin resistance. A similar linezolid MIC50 result (i.e. 0.5 mg/L) was observed against CoNS, with the vast majority of isolates (99.4%) also inhibited at ≤2 mg/L. Six CoNS that exhibited elevated linezolid MIC values were found to contain alterations in the 23S rRNA and/or L3 ribosomal protein. Linezolid exhibited consistent modal MIC and MIC50 results (1 mg/L) against enterococci, regardless of species or vancomycin resistance. Three Enterococcus faecalis from Galway and Dublin (Ireland) and Kelantan (Malaysia) showed MIC results of 4 to 8 mg/L and carried optrA. All Streptococcus pneumoniae, viridans-group streptococci and β-haemolytic streptococci were inhibited by linezolid at ≤2, ≤2 and ≤1 mg/L, respectively, with equivalent MIC90 results (1 mg/L for all groups).
CONCLUSIONS: These results document the continued long-term and stable in vitro potency of linezolid and reveal a limited number of isolates with decreased susceptibility to linezolid (i.e. MIC ≥4 mg/L). The latter isolates primarily showed mutations in the 23S rRNA gene and/or L3 protein, but cfr was not detected. Moreover, this study shows that isolates carrying the newly described ABC transporter optrA are not restricted to China.
EXPERIMENTS: Surface tension and neutron reflectivity have been used to investigate the variation in the adsorption properties with the shorter alkyl chain length (methyl, ethyl and propyl), the impact of NaCl on the adsorption, the tendency to form surface multilayer structures in the presence of AlCl3, and the effects of mixing the methyl ester sulfonate with the ethyl and propyl ester sulfonates on the adsorption.
FINDINGS: The variations in the critical micelle concentration, CMC, the adsorption isotherms, the saturation adsorption values, and the impact of NaCl illustrate the subtle influence of varying the shorter alkyl chain length of the surfactant. The non-ideal mixing of pairs of AES surfactants with different alkanol group lengths of the ester show that the extent of the non-ideality changes as the difference in the alkanol length increases. The surface multilayer formation observed in the presence of AlCl3 varies in a complex manner with the length of the short chain and for mixtures of surfactants with different chains lengths.
