The genus Tabernaemontana has widespread distribution throughout tropical and subtropical parts of the world, i.e. Africa, Asia and America which has long been used for treatments of different disease conditions including tumours, wounds, syphilis, stomach ache and headache. Some Tabernaemontana species are used for treatment of piles, spleen and abdominal tumours in India. In particular, the leaf of Tabernaemontana corymbosa is used for treatment of tumours in Bangladesh. Parts of the plant or whole plants are used as decoctions, steam bath, powder and ointments.
The effects of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) inoculation
on the sensory attributes and consumers acceptance of fermented curry paste compared with uncultured sample were assessed. pH, titratable acidity (TA) and color changes, during four-month storage were monitored. Hedonic test was utilized to evaluate consumer perception and acceptability of fermented and ordinary curry pastes. Rapid pH drop was observed in inoculated sample with Lb. plantarum presenting better performance than the Lb. bulgaricus. Titratable acidity increased significantly (p0.05) in most of the attributes of
original recipe and fermented curry paste except for color and sweetness. In summary, this study showed fermented curry paste with Lb. plantarum and Lb. bulgaricus exhibited new sensory attributes encouraging acceptability by consumers.
One of the major concerns in any pharmacological treatment is the patients' adherence to medication. However, different types of ocular dosage forms might result in different response and compliance from the patients. This study investigated and compared public willingness on different types of dosage forms available for ocular treatment. The study also evaluated their willingness on new approach for the treatment based on their knowledge, attitude, and perception. This study was conducted between October and December 2017 through a set of questionnaires applied to 90 respondents between the age of 18 and 60 years who lived in Muar and Kuantan, Malaysia. The results were analyzed using SPSS software version 22.0 including inferential and descriptive statistics. There was no significant difference in the knowledge level between all age groups towards different types of dosage forms available; eye drops (P = 0.09), eye ointment (P = 0.252), medicated contact lens (P = 0.05), ocular mini-tablets (P = 0.06), and ocular inserts (P = 0.075). There is a variation of results among the public towards different types of dosage forms with their willingness to try conventional and novel approach. Eye drops show the highest willingness followed by eye ointment (less willingness). However, most of them showed no willingness towards medicated contact lens, ocular mini-tablets, and ocular insert. This research hopes to provide an overview on the development process of new formulation and dosage forms based on the patients' willingness level in an attempt to increase patient compliance.
Paediatric orbital cellulitis is a potential sight- and life-threatening condition. It is a serious infection in children that can result in significant complications, including blindness, cavernous sinus thrombosis, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, meningitis, subdural empyema, and brain abscess. Of the patients with orbital cellulitis, 17% died from meningitis, and 20% of the survivors had permanent loss of vision. Therefore, the potential for sight- and life-threatening complications makes prompt diagnosis and early treatment very important. We report here a case of a two-year-old girl who presented with a three-day history of left periorbital swelling, preceded by left upper perioral swelling that extended upward to the left cheek and left lower lid and was associated with low-grade fever. The patient had been admitted and was treated as having left preseptal with facial cellulitis; the patient was started on intravenous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (200 mg three times per day dose), and chloramphenicol ointment was applied to the periorbital area. On day 3, the condition worsened, and dental examination showed multiple dental caries, upper gum swelling and abscess, and mobility of teeth 61 and 62 (two baby teeth). Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the orbit, paranasal, and brain showed a left periosteal abscess collection extending to the inferomedial region of the orbit. Examination and tooth extraction were performed under general anesthesia. The intraoperative results showed the presence of a left upper gum abscess, which was possibly the primary source of infection. Clinical improvement was observed postoperatively. Orbital cellulitis can be a complication of a dental abscess. This case emphasizes the importance of primary tooth care in children. A lack of care can result in fatal complications.
The objective of this study was to determine microbiological quality of gulai tempoyak paste (GTP) added with three different leaf; Vietnamese coriander, turmeric and asam gelugor. The GTP was cooked for 10 minutes with control temperature (60-70°C) and the leaf were added at 2, 5 and 8 minutes during the cooking time to give exposure times of 8, 5 and 2 minutes of the leaf to GTP. GTP without addition of leaf was treated as control and all the prepared GTPs were stored at 30°C for 2 days before analysed using total plate count (TPC) and yeast and mould count (YMC). The addition of asam gelugor leaf to GTP for 5 minutes of the cooking period significantly (p > 0.05) reduced TPC (log10 3.54 CFU/g) compared to Vietnamese coriander (log10 4.67 CFU/g) and turmeric leaf (log10 4.70 CFU/g). Asam gelugor leaf also showed a significant difference in TPC reduction (log10 4.44 CFU/g) when added to GTP for 8 minutes compared to Vietnamese coriander (log10 5.10 CFU/g), but was insignificant to turmeric leaf (log10 4.71 CFU/g). In conclusion, there are significant effects on microbiological quality of GTP when added with Vietnamese coriander, turmeric and asam gelugor leaf at different exposure time based on TPC and YMC.
