Street-vended beverages are commonly prepared by mechanical extraction of the pulp, usually
unpasteurised and requires multiple handling steps. Foodborne pathogens transmitted via skin of
street vendors or via faecal-oral route may contaminate the preparation surfaces and beverages.
The aim of this study is to identify Escherichia spp. strains of street-vended beverages and their
associated preparation surfaces using 16s rRNA analysis. The hygienic practice of vendors was represented by Staphylococcus spp. analysis and Staphylococcus aureus is not detected in beverages and associated preparation surfaces. A total of 80 samples (18 beverages, 15 swab
samples and 47 direct film samples) were collected followed by enumeration of microbial load.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplification and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA)
sequencing were carried out. Results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis indicated that three gram-negative isolates were identified as Escherichia coli RM9387 (Accession no. CP009104.1),
Escherichia coli c164 (Accession no. JQ781646.1) and Escherichia fergusonii E10 (Accession no. KJ626264.1) with similarity value of 99% respectively.
A 26-year-old assistant nurse suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was successfully treated with combination chemotherapy. 15 months later, she relapsed with a lump in her right breast. The significance of this finding is discussed.
This paper remarks the general correlations of the shape and crystallinity of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) support on gold deposition and carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. It was found that due to the larger rutile TiO₂ particles and thus the pore volume, the deposited gold particles tended to agglomerate, resulting in smaller catalyst surface area and limited gold loading, whilst anatase TiO₂ enabled better gold deposition. Those properties directly related to gold particle size and thus the number of low coordinated atoms play dominant roles in enhancing CO oxidation activity. Gold deposited on anatase spheroidal TiO₂ at photo-deposition wavelength of 410 nm for 5 min resulted in the highest CO oxidation activity of 0.0617 mmol CO/s.gAu (89.5% conversion) due to the comparatively highest catalyst surface area (114.4 m²/g), smallest gold particle size (2.8 nm), highest gold loading (7.2%), and highest Au⁰ content (68 mg/g catalyst). CO oxidation activity was also found to be directly proportional to the Au⁰ content. Based on diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, we postulate that anatase TiO₂-supported Au undergoes rapid direct oxidation whilst CO oxidation on rutile TiO₂-supported Au could be inhibited by co-adsorption of oxygen.
A 33-year-old Malay lady presented to us with 1-month history of globus sensation in the throat. Clinically, she had a 3cmx2cmx1cm sessile soft mass arising from the right tongue base and was treated as hypertrophied lingual tonsil. Biopsy of the mass was done when the patient developed bleeding and was reported as diffuse non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma. Globus sensation is a common complaint in the ORL clinic. It is important to be able to decide if further investigation is warranted to differentiate a malignant from a benign lesion as at times, a malignant lesion can masquerade as a harmless lesion.
This paper reviews the pattern of glomeruler disease from 163 renal biopsies performed at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology. Nephrotic syndrome formed the largest group of patients. There is a high prevalence of SLE nephritis in our community. The histopathologic findings in our series were comparable to those from Western countries except for the lower incidence of membranous and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.
While ethnocultural differences in risk of tardive dyskinesia (TD) have been suggested, no previous studies have examined whether this factor also plays a role in lack of awareness of TD. This study examined this question in an Asian population with schizophrenia. Six hundred seven patients in a state mental hospital in Singapore were assessed using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) and the Simpson-Angus Rating Scale. Of the 607 patients, 242 (39.9%) met criteria for TD, and 163 (67.4%) patients were not aware of the presence of TD. No significant differences in terms of age, gender, and duration of illness were found between those aware of their TD and those not aware. Daily neuroleptic doses and scores for the AIMS and Simpson-Angus Rating Scale were significantly different, although after logistic regression, only the Simpson-Angus Rating Scale scores remained significant. The finding that a large proportion of our patients lacked awareness of their TD is consistent with other reports in the West and provides evidence that this feature is characteristic of the illness rather than of a specific ethnocultural group. We found an association between lack of awareness and greater severity of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), suggesting that there may be a subtype of TD in which lack of awareness and greater vulnerability of developing EPS are features.
Thirty Chinese primiparous mothers were asked during the antenatal period their breastfeeding intention and then interviewed at delivery and 6 weeks post delivery. One mother had no intention to breastfeed. Ten mothers intended exclusive breastfeeding for one month and 19 for 6 weeks or more. At 6 weeks post delivery only 4 mothers were still breastfeeding. A total of 22 (73%) did not achieve their initial intention. For any future pregnancy, 5 chose exclusive breastfeeding, 22 complementary and 3 formula feeding. Chinese primiparous mothers have high breastfeeding intentions but the majority do not achieve them and their experience has discouraged them from exclusive breastfeeding in future pregnancies.
We report this 21 years old Indian male with the nephrotic syndrome due to membranous nephropathy who later developed numerous epithelial crescents leading to a rapid loss of renal function. The pathogenesis of the crescentic transformation in this type of glomerulopathy is discussed.
Double perovskite-type catalysts including La2CoMnO6 and La2CuMnO6 are first evaluated for the effectiveness in removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and single perovskites (LaCoO3, LaMnO3, and LaCuO3) are also tested for comparison. All perovskites are tested with the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 30,000hr-1, and the temperature range of 100-600°C for C7H8 removal. Experimental results indicate that double perovskites have better activity if compared with single perovskites. Especially, toluene (C7H8) can be completely oxidized to CO2 at 300°C as La2CoMnO6 is applied. Characterization of catalysts indicates that double perovskites own unique surface properties and are of higher amounts of lattice oxygen, leading to higher activity. Additionally, apparent activation energy of 68kJ/mol is calculated using Mars-van Krevelen model for C7H8 oxidation with La2CoMnO6 as catalyst. For durability test, both La2CoMnO6 and La2CuMnO6 maintain high C7H8 removal efficiencies of 100% and 98%, respectively, at 300°C and 30,000hr-1, and they also show good resistance to CO2 (5%) and H2O(g) (5%) of the gas streams tested. For various VOCs including isopropyl alcohol (C3H8O), ethanal (C2H4O), and ethylene (C2H4) tested, as high as 100% efficiency could be achieved with double perovskite-type catalysts operated at 300-350°C, indicating that double perovskites are promising catalysts for VOCs removal.
The Malaysian government has committed to 'Fast Tracking the HIV Response' to achieve UNAIDS 2030 targets to end AIDS. The epidemic is concentrated among key populations and has shifted from people who inject drugs to HIV infection through sexual transmission among men who have sex with men, sex workers and transgender people. The aim of this scoping review was to examine social and behavioural research published since 2005 that can inform understanding of each stage of the 90:90:90 treatment cascade (as proposed by UNAIDS), including HIV risk behaviours and testing practices that precede entry. We found a concentration of studies related to predictors or correlates of HIV infections (mostly among men who have sex with men) and a shortfall in literature pertaining to sex workers or transgender people. While several studies examined factors associated with HIV testing, only one examined uptake of antiretroviral therapy and two explored issues of treatment adherence. No study examined broader care and support of people living with HIV. To scale-up effective programmes and apprise investment to achieve the ambitious targets set-out in the Malaysian National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan, a combination of comprehensive strategic information and evidence generated through primary research is critical.
Mesoporous Mn1.5Co1.5O₄ (MCO) spinel films were prepared directly on a conductive nickel (Ni) foam substrate via electrodeposition and an annealing treatment as supercapacitor electrodes. The electrodeposition time markedly influenced the surface morphological, textural, and supercapacitive properties of MCO/Ni electrodes. The (MCO/Ni)-15 min electrode (electrodeposition time: 15 min) exhibited the highest capacitance among three electrodes (electrodeposition times of 7.5, 15, and 30 min, respectively). Further, an asymmetric supercapacitor that utilizes (MCO/Ni)-15 min as a positive electrode, a plasma-treated activated carbon (PAC)/Ni electrode as a negative electrode, and carboxymethyl cellulose-lithium nitrate (LiNO₃) gel electrolyte (denoted as (PAC/Ni)//(MCO/Ni)-15 min) was fabricated. In a stable operation window of 2.0 V, the device exhibited an energy density of 27.6 Wh·kg-1 and a power density of 1.01 kW·kg-1 at 1 A·g-1. After 5000 cycles, the specific energy density retention and power density retention were 96% and 92%, respectively, demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. The good supercapacitive performance and excellent stability of the (PAC/Ni)//(MCO/Ni)-15 min device can be ascribed to the hierarchical structure and high surface area of the (MCO/Ni)-15 min electrode, which facilitate lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation at the electrode/electrolyte interface and mitigate volume change during long-term charge/discharge cycling.
From a total of 163 renal biopsies there were 12 cases (9.1%) of IgA nephropathy. All of them presented with symptomatic or asymptomatic proteinuria and/or haematuria. The pattern of disease here generally conforms to reports elsewhere. However in contrast it appears to be common in both sexes and the clinical course tends to be more severe In males. The absence of IgG In the glomeruli on immunoffourescence was an unexpected finding. The presence of hypertension, renal insufficiency and glomerulo·interstitial scarring seem to indicate poorer prognosis. There is no known effective treatment.
A computer-aided detection auto-probing (CADAP) system is presented for detecting breast lesions using dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, through a spatial-based discrete Fourier transform. The stand-alone CADAP system reduces noise, refines region of interest (ROI) automatically, and detects the breast lesion with minimal false positive detection. The lesions are then classified and colourised according to their characteristics, whether benign, suspicious or malignant. To enhance the visualisation, the entire analysed ROI is constructed into a 3-D image, so that the user can diagnose based on multiple views on the ROI. The proposed method has been applied to 101 sets of digital images, and the results compared with the biopsy results done by radiologists. The proposed scheme is able to identify breast cancer regions accurately and efficiently.
The aim of this study is to better understand the epidemiological and clinical features of patients with sarcoidosis in Singapore and to ascertain if ethnic differences exist.
