A case is described of subdural spinal lipoma with posterior fossa extension and the world literature is reviewed. A high proportion of high cervical lipomas extend into the posterior cranial fossa. Many cases were probably missed in the pre-computed tomography era. Those cases with posterior fossa growth are more likely to be found in infants or those cases with symptoms dating from birth; most present with quadriparesis. All cases of high cervical lipoma demonstrated by myelography should be submitted to brain computed tomography in order to exclude posterior fossa extension and demonstrate the presence of hydrocephalus.
International trade of plastic waste promotes the global plastic circular economy and improves resource efficiency, but exacerbates the ubiquitous plastic pollution. Understanding the drivers behind the evolution of the global plastic waste trade network (GPWTN) is pivotal for developing new international instruments to end plastic pollution and fostering clean solid-waste trade. Employing social network analysis (SNA) and quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) model, this study structures the GPWTN using bilateral trade data, revealing shifts from highly centralized to cross-layered networks and relevant drivers. It is suggested that Malaysia and Turkey has become the new key recipients of the GPWTN, replacing China, accompanied by the launch of new environmental regulations in some countries. Transportation cost is the most critical factor for the formation of the GPWTN, followed by gaps in resource demand, bio-based resource availability, and transportation accessibility. Trading partners in closer proximity, especially those with contiguous borders, are more likely to trade in waste plastics, while coastal countries play an important role in these partnerships. Economies with more abundant biomaterials, higher incomes, and greater environmental burdens are more likely to be exporters, while economies with scarcer resources and more compelling demands are more likely to import plastic waste. Countries involved in the trade in plastic waste, as either importers or exporters, receive varying degrees of economic benefits but bear potential environmental impacts. Therefore, global plastic pollution control and trade prosperity necessitates necessitate coordinated endeavors from nations and intergovernmental bodies for a mutually advantageous denouement.
Illicium difengpi B. N. Chang et al., a shrub with aromatic odor in the Illicium genus, is extensively used as a medicinal plant in China. In June of 2020, a leaf spot on I. difengpi with incidence of about sixty percent was observed in a field located in Guilin (25°4'40"N; 110°18'21"E), Guangxi Province, China. Initial leaf symptoms were round spots with gray centers, surrounded by yellow halos. The spots gradually spread and merged. Six samples of symptomatic leaves were collected from six diseased plants, and they were surface disinfested before isolation. Potato dextrose agar (PDA) was used to culture pathogens. Successively, pure cultures were obtained by transferring hyphal tips to new PDA plates. A total of 10 isolates were obtained from the affected leaves. Two single-spore isolates (GX-1 and GX-2) were obtained and confirmed to be identical based on morphological characteristics. The representative isolate GX-2 was selected for further study on morphological and molecular characteristics. The colony of isolate GX-2 was about 4 cm in diameter on a PDA plate in 5 days, dark green with a granular surface, and irregular white edge. Conidia were hyaline, unicellular, oval, narrow at the end with a single apical appendage, and 8.2 to 13.8 × 3.7 to 7.2 µm (n = 50). Spermatia were hyaline, bacilliform with swollen ends, 3.8 to 8.9 × 1.3 to 1.9 µm (n = 50). Morphological characteristics of isolate GX-2 were consistent with the description of Phyllosticta capitalensis (Wikee et al. 2013). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) and actin (ACT) were amplified using primers ITS1/ITS4, EF-728F/EF-986R, Gpd1-LM/Gpd2-LM and ACT-512F/ACT-783R, respectively (Wikee et al. 2013). Sequences were deposited in GenBank with accession numbers OL505439 for ITS, OL539429 for ACT, OL539430 for tef1-α and OL539431 for GPDH. BLAST analysis in GenBank showed that these sequences were 99 to 100% similar to the corresponding ITS (MT649668), ACT (MN958710), tef1-α (MN958711) and GPDH (KU716077) sequences of P. capitalensis. Also, the phylogenetic tree based on genes of ITS, tef1-α, GPDH and ACT by the maximum likelihood method showed that isolate GX-2 clustered together with P. capitalensis. The pathogenicity tests were carried out on a healthy 3 year-old plant in the greenhouse with 80% relative humidity at 25 °C. Four sterilized leaves were wounded with a needle and inoculated with 20 μL spore suspension (1 × 106 spores/ml). Another four sterilized leaves were inoculated with 20 μL sterile water as a control. All plants were incubated in a chamber with 98% relative humidity at 25 ± 1°C. After 12 days, disease symptoms similar to the field were observed on leaves, whereas control plants remained healthy. P. capitalensis was successfully reisolated only from the inoculated leaves and identified based on morphological characters. P. capitalensis caused leaf spots on various host plants around the world (Wikee et al. 2013), including on tea plants in China (Cheng et al. 2019) and oil palm in Malaysia (Nasehi et al. 2020), but it has not been reported on I. difengpi. Thus, this is the first report of P. capitalensis causing leaf spot on I. difengpi. This study will provide an important reference for the control of the disease. The epidemiology of this disease should be investigated in further research.
The use of plastics has become deeply ingrained in our society, and there are no indications that its prevalence will decrease in the foreseeable future. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the global plastic waste disposal landscape, examining it through regional perspectives, various management technologies (dumping or landfilling, incineration, and reuse and recycling), and across different sectors including agriculture and food, textile, tourism, and healthcare. Notably, this study compiles the findings on life-cycle carbon footprints associated with various plastic waste management practices as documented in the literature. Employing the bio-circular-green economy model, we advocate for the adoption of streamlined and sustainable approaches to plastic management. Unique management measures are also discussed including the utilization of bioplastics combined with smart and efficient collection processes that facilitate recycling, industrial composting, or anaerobic digestion. Moreover, the integration of advanced recycling methods for conventional plastics with renewable energy, the establishment of plastic tax and credits, and the establishment of extended producer responsibility are reviewed. The success of these initiatives relies on collaboration and support from peers, industries, and consumers, ultimately contributing to informed decision-making and fostering sustainable practices in plastic waste management.
Some novel hydrazone derivatives 6a-o were synthesized from the key intermediate 4-Chloro-N-(2-hydrazinocarbonyl-phenyl)-benzamide 5 and characterized using IR, ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The inhibitory potential against two secretory phospholipase A₂ (sPLA₂), three protease enzymes and eleven bacterial strains were evaluated. The results revealed that all compounds showed preferential inhibition towards hGIIA isoform of sPLA₂ rather than DrG-IB with compounds 6l and 6e being the most active. The tested compounds exhibited excellent antiprotease activity against proteinase K and protease from Bacillus sp. with compound 6l being the most active against both enzymes. Furthermore, the maximum zones of inhibition against bacterial growth were exhibited by compounds; 6a, 6m, and 6o against P. aeruginosa; 6a, 6b, 6d, 6f, 6l, 6m, 6n, and 6o against Serratia; 6k against S. mutans; and compounds 6a, 6d, 6e, 6m, and 6n against E. feacalis. The docking simulations of hydrazones 6a-o with GIIA sPLA₂, proteinase K and hydrazones 6a-e with glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate transaminase were performed to obtain information regarding the mechanism of action.
The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140 fb^{-1} for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal yield is 2.2±0.7 times the standard model prediction, and agrees with the theoretical expectation within 1.9 standard deviations.
A combination of fifteen top quark mass measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 5 and 20 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The combination includes measurements in top quark pair events that exploit both the semileptonic and hadronic decays of the top quark, and a measurement using events enriched in single top quark production via the electroweak t channel. The combination accounts for the correlations between measurements and achieves an improvement in the total uncertainty of 31% relative to the most precise input measurement. The result is m_{t}=172.52±0.14(stat)±0.30(syst) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 0.33 GeV.
