Immunoglobulin G, A and M levels were determined in paired maternal and cord sera of premature, full term and postmature newborns of urban dwelling Chinese, Indian, Malay and full term newborn of the forest dwelling Orang Asli (Malaysian aborigines). The mean serum IgC level in the full term Orang Asli newborns (1254±441 mg per 100 mil is comparable to that of the Indians (1211±282 mg per 100 ml) and Malays (1169±286 mg per 100 ml) but these levels are higher than those of the Chinese
newborns (1092±270 mg per 100 ml). Statistical analysis indicates a significant dependence of cord serum IgG level on maternal serum IgG level in the . Chinese, Indians and Malays. In addition, in Indians the cord serum IgG was significantly dependent at 5% level on the gestation age. The fetomaternal serum IgG level ratios at term were equal to or just less than one. The cord serum IgM levels of the Chinese, Indian, Malay and Orang Asli newborns at term were 11.6.±. 6.5, 12.5.±. 7.3, 10.9.±. 5.8 and
16.7±6.9 mg per 100 ml respectively. Statistical analysis showed absence of correlation between cord serum IgM level and birthweight, gestation age or maternal serum IgM level in Chinese and Malays. In Indians the cord sera IgM level showed a dependence on the birthweight. Immunoglobulin A was present in 34.6%, 40.5%, 31.6% and 62.5% of full term Chinese, Indian, Malay and Orang Asli newborns respectively. These observations are discussed in relation to the immunoglobulin levels observed in populations residing in temperate and other tropical regions.

Central corneal thickness plays a major role in the management of many types of glaucoma. Therefore, our aim is to determine the relationship between the severity of glaucoma measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and central corneal thickness (CCT) among normal tension and high tension glaucoma patients. This is an observational cross sectional study on 190 patients carried out in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). Three groups of patients were identified; 60 normal tension glaucoma (NTG), 61 primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and 69 control. Patients were identified based on the glaucomatous visual field changes and previous record of intraocular pressure before treatment. Visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements were recorded. Specular microscope was used to measure the CCT and the severity of glaucoma was evaluated objectively based on the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness using optical coherence tomography. Results showed NTG patients had significantly thinner cornea, 503.07±32.27µm compared to the control group, 517.45±31.74 µm (p=0.012).
However, there was no significant difference between the CCT of POAG and NTG groups (p=0.386).Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness was significantly different between the glaucoma and the control groups (p

The present work aimed to determine the best formulation of mixed drink made from red cabbage and roselle extracts. Six mixed drink formulations were prepared based on different ratios of red cabbage to roselle extracts: F1 (30:20); F2 (35:15), F3 (40:10); F4 (20:30); F5 (15:35) and F6 (25:25). Samples were prepared by pasteurising the mixed drinks with the pre-determined amount of ingredients at 90°C for 5 sec. The pH of roselle extract (2.06 ± 0.02) was found to be more acidic as compared to red cabbage extract (6.38 ± 0.03). This contributed to the low pH in mixed drink formulations (2.68-3.48). Total titratable acidity (TTA) (0.44-0.89% malic acid w/v) and total anthocyanin content (247.99-339.77 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/L) were shown to increase significantly with increasing roselle extract concentration. Similarly, total soluble solids (TSS) (12.23-12.83°brix) was found to increase significantly with higher ratio of red cabbage extract due to high TSS content (7.67 ± 0.08°brix) in the extract as compared to roselle extract (4.63 ± 0.09°brix). There were significant differences among all the samples in L*, a* and b* values. Mixed drink formulations that contained higher concentration of red cabbage extract were lighter and redder in colour. Significant differences were observed in sweetness, sourness, taste and overall acceptability of drinks, with F3 yielding the highest mean scores for all attributes. Mean score of sensory attributes of the mixed drinks were related to physicochemical properties. Mean scores of all sensory attributes had negative correlation with TTA. Sweetness mean score was positively correlated to the L* value, sourness mean score was positively correlated with pH, L* and a* values but negatively correlated with b* value, and colour mean score had positive correlation with a* value. Therefore, it can be concluded that panellists preferred less sour drinks, which were lighter and redder in colour.β-carotene onto the PKSAC in a model system but yielded the highest desorption efficiency.

A case of rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis is presented showing its aggressive nature and progression of disease. The typical clinical features, neuroimaging and histological findings are highlighted in this report. Amphotericin B and surgical debridement remain the mainstay of treatment. However, associated co-morbidities need to be addressed.

Acanthamoeba is an uncommon cause of keratitis but one of the most severe because of the prolonged and painful course of the disease and poor visual outcome. Although contact lens use is the principal risk factor, about 10% of cases occur following trauma and exposure to contaminated soil or water. Two cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis involving women contact lens wearers have previously been reported in Malaysia but this is the first time, a non contact lens related Acanthamoeba keratitis is reported. The case involved a 28 year old Indonesian male construction worker who had a trauma of the right eye during work. His eye was struck by sand and dust particles after which he quickly washed with water from an open tank at the construction site. He experienced pain, redness, glaring and blurring of vision of the right eye three days later. The diagnosis was missed at initial presentation but culture of the corneal scraping had proven Acanthamoeba as the aetiological agent. The history and clinical findings of this trauma related Acanthamoeba keratitis are briefly discussed.

This retrospective study investigated the role of antivascular endothelial growth factor agents (VEGF), ranibizumab, bevacizumab and pegaptanib sodium in patients with iris neovascularisation (INV), in which 9 eyes received intraocular injections for various ischaemic ocular conditions. Ocular sequelae included recurrence of rubeosis (n=2) and hyphaema (n=2). Systemic complication included one case of cerebrovascular accident. INV regressed in all cases from day one. INV recurrence occurred in 2 cases. The mean intraocular pressure of the study eyes decreased from 25.3 mmHg to 18.3 mmHg at one month. Five eyes are medication free. Visual acuity improved in 5 eyes. Four eyes achieved a Snellen visual acuity of 6/24 or better. We conclude that the use of intraocular anti-VEGF agents are safe and effective for inducing the regression of INV. Patients with multiple systemic risk factors should be counseled on stroke risk.

The purpose of this study was to compare the use of autologous fibrin to human amniotic membrane (HAM) as a scaffold in cultivating autologous conjunctiva for transplantation in treatment of conjunctival defect. An experimental study was performed using 18 adult New Zealand white strain rabbits which were divided into 3 groups. Each group consists of 6 rabbits. The conjunctiva on the temporal site was excised to create a conjunctival epithelial defect. The excised area in the Group 1 was transplanted with autologous conjunctiva cultivated on autologous fibrin; Group 2 was transplanted with autologous conjunctiva cultivated on HAM and Group 3 was left bare. The rabbits were followed up at regular intervals until 6 weeks. The mean period of complete conjunctival epithelization was 11.50 ± 8.22 days for the autologous fibrin group, 15.33 ± 11.80 days for the HAM group and 25.33 ± 5.32 days in the bare sclera group. The epithelization rate for the autologous fibrin group was faster compared to the other two groups. However all the results were not statistically significant (p value >0.05). There were no postoperative complications noted during the follow up. Autologous fibrin is comparable to HAM as a scaffold for cultivation of conjunctiva in the treatment of conjunctival defect.
