    Introduction: Consistent with the significant of the stress issue in education, this study aimed to survey type of stressors and identifies the coping strategies used by diploma nursing students during clinical practices.

    Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the Kubang Kerian Nursing College, Kelantan which involved 346 respondents using simple random sampling method. The inclusion criteria were year one, two and three of nursing students who have clinical posting and voluntarily joining the study. Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Brief COPE inventory were utilised in the data collection. Higher mean score indicates higher degree of stress.

    Results: Clinical assignments and workload were the main stressor (mean = 3.19, SD = 1.09). Religion approach was the most coping strategy applied (mean = 3.30, SD = 0.71). Pearson's correlation coefficient test found that six domains of stressors during clinical practices (taking care of patients; clinical educators/instructors and ward staff; clinical assignments and workload; peers and nursing students from other college; lack of professional knowledge and skills and clinical environment) were statistically significant correlation with coping strategies, where P-value < 0.05.

    Conclusion: Clinical assignment was the main stressor among nursing students; therefore, successful activities should be promoted to help them in managing clinical assignment and enhancing knowledge in religion.

    Background: Concept mapping has been established as a learning strategy that encourages critical thinking and creativity among students, leading to the development of a concept mapping guideline designed to guide nurse educators in using this teaching strategy.

    Objectives: This paper illustrates the development of a guideline to build a concept mapping based-learning strategy. Called the Rusnani concept mapping (RCM) protocol guideline, it was adapted from the Mohd Afifi learning model (MoAFF) and the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) model, integrated with the Kemp model.

    Methods: This model uses the five phases of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The validity of the guideline was determined by using content and face validity and the Delphi technique. Content validity for this RCM guideline was established using expert review. This formula suggested that if the content validity is greater than 70%, it shows good content validity, and if it is less than 70%, the content validity is low and it is advisable to recheck the content according to the objective of the study.

    Results: The reliability of the RCM was 0.816, showing that the RCM guideline has high reliability and validity.

    Conclusion: It is practical and acceptable for nurse educators to apply RCM as an effective and innovative teaching method to enhance the academic performance of their nursing students.

    Fast dissolving microneedles (F-dMN) are quite a novel approach delivering specific drug molecules directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the first-pass effect. The present study reported an F-dMN patch to enhance systemic delivery of simvastatin in a patient-friendly manner. The F-dMN patch was developed using polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl alcohol and characterized using light microscopy, SEM, XRD, FTIR, mechanical strength, drug content (%), an ex-vivo penetration study, an ex-vivo drug release study, a skin irritation test, and a pharmacokinetics study. The optimized F-dMN patch exhibited excellent elongation of 35.17%, good tensile strength of 9.68  MPa, an appropriate moisture content of 5.65%, and good penetrability up to 560 µm. Moreover, it showed 93.4% of the drug content within the needles and 81.75% in-vitro release. Histopathological findings and a skin irritation study proved that the F-dMN patch was biocompatible and did not cause any sort of irritation on animal skin. Pharmacokinetic parameters of F-dMN patches were improved (Cmax 6.974 µg/ml, tmax 1 hr and AUC 19. 518 µg.h/ml) as compared to tablet Simva 20 mg solution (Cmax 2.485 µg/ml, tmax 1.4 hr and AUC 11.199 µg.h/ml), thus confirming bioavailability enhancement. Moreover, stability studies confirmed the stability of the developed F-dMN patch, as investigated by axial needle fracture force and drug content.

    Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors have emerged as promising nanoscale photocatalysts due to their excellent photosensitivity, chemical stability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. Enhancing the photocatalytic activity of metal oxide is critical in improving their efficiency in radical ion production upon optical exposure for various applications. Therefore, this review paper provides an in-depth analysis of the photocatalytic activity of nanostructured metal oxides, including the photocatalytic mechanism, factors affecting the photocatalytic efficiency, and approaches taken to boost the photocatalytic performance through structure or material modifications. This paper also highlights an overview of the recent applications and discusses the recent advancement of ZnO-based nanocomposite as a promising photocatalytic material for environmental remediation, energy conversion, and biomedical applications.

    Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is one of the microfluid-based techniques that can manipulate the red blood cells (RBC) for blood plasma separation, which is used in many medical screening/diagnosis applications. The tapered aluminium microelectrode array (TAMA) is fabricated for potential sensitivity enhancement of RBC manipulation in lateral and vertical directions. In this paper, the migration properties of dielectrophoretically manipulated RBC in TAMA platform are studied at different peak-to-peak voltage (Vpp) and duration supplied onto the microelectrodes. Positive DEP manipulation is conducted at 440 kHz with the RBC of 4.00 ± 0.2 µm average radius attracted to the higher electric field intensity regions, which are the microelectrodes. High percentage of RBC migration occurred at longer manipulation time and high electrode voltage. During DEP manipulation, the RBC are postulated to levitate upwards, experience the electro-orientation mechanism and form the pearl chains before migrating to the electrodes. The presence of external forces other than the dielectrophoretic force may also affect the migration response of RBC. The safe operating limit of 10 Vpp and manipulation duration of ≤50 s prevent RBC rupture while providing high migration percentage. It is crucial to define the safe working region for TAMA devices that manipulate small RBC volume (~10 µL).

    INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a known risk factor for diabetes mellitus (DM). The rising prevalence of GDM in the Asian population (11.7%) may explain the increasing incidence of DM in women. This study examined the prevalence of GDM, its associated factors and the foeto-maternal outcomes of women with GDM in Terengganu.

    METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and September 2019 using secondary data from antenatal records in 40 health clinics in Terengganu for 2018. All pregnant women aged 25 years and above with or without risk factors for GDM were included in the study. Those with pre-existing type 1 or 2 DM were excluded. A total of 270 respondents were included. The prevalence of GDM and its associated factors were determined using descriptive statistics followed by multiple logistic regression.

    RESULTS: The prevalence of GDM in Terengganu was 27.3% (n=72). Logistic regression analysis found that BMI at booking (adjusted OR=4.51, 95% CI 2.13-9.55, p<0.001), history of GDM (adjusted OR=5.31, 95% CI 2.17-12.99, p<0.001) and family history of DM (adjusted OR=4.24, 95% CI 2.23-8.05, p<0.001) were the significant associated risk factors. Of women with GDM, 17.7% (n=11) had postpartum pre-diabetes based on modified oral glucose tolerance at 6 weeks postpartum. Univariate analysis using chi-square tests showed a significant association of neonatal jaundice and hypoglycaemia with GDM.

    CONCLUSION: Because the prevalence of GDM in Terengganu is high, surveillance of GDM in highrisk pregnancies and effective glycaemic management should be emphasised to prevent adverse foeto-maternal outcomes.

    In this study, we present a comprehensive review of polymer-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) electromagnetic (EM) actuators and their implementation in the biomedical engineering field. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary on the latest development of electromagnetically driven microactuators for biomedical application that is focused on the movable structure development made of polymers. The discussion does not only focus on the polymeric material part itself, but also covers the basic mechanism of the mechanical actuation, the state of the art of the membrane development and its application. In this review, a clear description about the scheme used to drive the micro-actuators, the concept of mechanical deformation of the movable magnetic membrane and its interaction with actuator system are described in detail. Some comparisons are made to scrutinize the advantages and disadvantages of electromagnetic MEMS actuator performance. The previous studies and explanations on the technology used to fabricate the polymer-based membrane component of the electromagnetically driven microactuators system are presented. The study on the materials and the synthesis method implemented during the fabrication process for the development of the actuators are also briefly described in this review. Furthermore, potential applications of polymer-based MEMS EM actuators in the biomedical field are also described. It is concluded that much progress has been made in the material development of the actuator. The technology trend has moved from the use of bulk magnetic material to using magnetic polymer composites. The future benefits of these compact flexible material employments will offer a wide range of potential implementation of polymer composites in wearable and portable biomedical device applications.
